Pasadena Horse and Pony Association President s Letter J ANUARY EDITION W RITTEN BY: JENN N ALE D ISTRIBUTED BY: LISA B LAKENEY Inside this issue: Vice President s Letter 1 As we begin this New Year it is a time for reflection and growth in our professional, personal, and social life. From a social standpoint, how can we make the Pasadena Horse and Pony Association stronger and more united this year? How your elected Officers and Board of Directors better serve you and your families interests? PHPA Annual Club Meeting and Holiday 2014 Officers and Board of Directors 2 3 With a freshly voted in Board of Director and Officer slate, we will begin 2014 with a Calendar if Events. The 2014 Calendar of Events will be discussed and developed at the first BOD and Officer meeting of this new year, which will occur on the first Tuesday in February. I strongly urge members to think about what they would like to accomplish in all faucets of your life within this new year and those to come. In the beginning of each new year, the word RESOLUTION is frequently referred to. I prefer setting short-term and long-term goals. In Our Travels 4 Membership Report and Announcements January s Featured Member Calendar of Events and Classified Corral PHPA Picture Page Membership Form What are your goals this year? Maybe this will be the year that you start actively trail riding? Join the PHPA at a fun show? Grow friendships within your barn? Or perhaps your beginner child begins competing in the lead-line and walk classes at our shows? Lets step outside our comfort zones this year and CHALLENGE ourselves. This month I will begin several Facebook posts in the Pasadena Horse and Pony Association page. I will be asking members to share their goals and thoughts for this new year. Don t be shy. Let us hear what your thinking. I am sure your not the only thinking in that same direction. Your Horsey Friend, Jennifer Nale Vice President
PHPA Annual Club Meeting and Holiday Party Hosted by the Zuern household, our club gathered for a festive evening surrounded by friends. As tradition has it, Bob Zuern provided an excellent meal that was added to by the dishes members also brought. Personally, I always look forward to the pot roast style beef and juicy herb potatoes accompanied by rolls. Those in attendance brought a wonderful assortment of desserts that left friends coming back for more. With a warm fire going outside, the men in attendance slipped away for some fresh air, while the women stayed inside to talk. The room was filled with excitement as well chatted about our thoughts for this new year. Here and there one of us would slip away with horse treats in-hand to feed Bob s ponies outback. Well actually calling them ponies is a HUGE understatement. Bob s smallest is indeed a pony. A miniature horse to be exact who is accompanied by two very large Friesians. Soon we gathered in line to make our dinner plates. Starting with one plate, many of us were back at the buffet table for a second. I must say the dessert table definitely caught my eye. Following dinner the list of nominations for 2014 Officer and Board of Director seats was read aloud and voted upon. A complete list of our new Officers and Board of Directors is located on the opposite page. We rounded out the evening by partaking in an innocent game of Secret Santa. Janice Waltjen had participants pull a random number from a hat. Next, in numerical order members chose a wrapped gift. Janice Waltjen, who was number one went first followed by a dozen other members. Most members were innocent and did not utilize the stealing clause in the Secret Santa gift exchange. However, I found myself (Jenn Nale) a victim. Hehe. After a wonderful evening hosted by Bob Zuern, we all went home with full bellies and even bigger smiles! We would like to give a HUGE thanks to the Zuern household. Bob Zuern you are a dear friend to the Pasadena Horse and Pony Association. Page 2 Page 2

In our travels... In our travels this month, my family and I visited the Prince George s Equestrian Center. Thanks to the heads up made by Alice Dibben, on December 26th we enjoyed a meet-and-greet with a Budweiser Clydesdale. One of the head trainers answered questions and told us a great deal about Budweiser s breeding and training farms as well as there day-to-day operations. After getting a picture with Jack who is one of the Clydesdales on Budweiser s team, we watched various heavy-breeds perform in the ring. This was a nice family event hosted by the Maryland Horse Industry Board in Conjunction with Horse Pals and the Prince George s Equestrian Center. The Budweiser Horses are literally treated like royalty from the time they are conceived through each year and stage of life. To help put this in perspective...according to the head trainer all of their stables are heated. In a field of clover "In memory of Moses, purchased Nov. 8, 1989 for Alice's Grandson Aaron when he was one day old. Moses was about 3 years old. He died on Jan from complications that gray horses often get, but he lived a nice long life and had many friends and activities. He was dressed up for a lot of fun shows and parades, and was a Pony Club games super star for a super star rider, Tracey Bienemann. He stood still and was groomed by uncountable small children who loved him. How lucky to have the hay man bring this incredible animal to Sandhill Farm to be loved and cherished for a lifetime." -Alice Dibben
January Membership Report -Submitted by Alice Dibben and Lisa Blakeney Membership Renewals which became due on due January 1, 2014, are at an all time high this year (No one keeps count, it just seems that way) with 12 households and 31 members responding early. Just remember that May 10th is Horse Appreciation Day. The date is coming up quickly. If you would like to volunteer and lend a hand in the planning and execution of this large community event PLEASE come to our monthly Officers and Board of Director meetings. REMINDER: Our next meeting will be held Tuesday February 4th at 7pm at the Waltjen residence. 6 This month s featured Club Member... This month s featured PHPA member is Jackie Hessler Horses are beautiful animals I was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky which is horse country. As far back as I can remember I have always loved horses, dogs and cats. I love all animals. I worked on farms just to ride the horses. I never minded grooming or cleaning; it was all fun to me. Whatever the farm owners wanted me to do with the horses was fine with me. I was never lucky enough to have my own horse until I was 40 years old. My husband bought me my first horse named Vanilla; a beautiful white one, but at that time my husband never could have believed that we would end up with 5 horses! Yes he did ride too and his job is the hard work of getting hay and feed and keeping things in good working order. Having a favorite [horse] is hard to say for I have been lucky to have all wonderful and good horses and loved them all. At the age of 33 I found out that I had Lupus which for years took a lot out of me, but I came back and did well and that s where my horses have been my savior. I now have rheumatoid arthritis too which is crippling but I won t let it get me down. I still do work and ride as much as I can at 68 years old.
2014 Calendar of Events As our 2014 Officers and Board of Directors meet on the first Tuesday evening of February, they will plan out the club s calendar year. Within the next week or two, please contact an officer, director, or make a comment on the club s Facebook page with suggestions. We need YOUR input! What is it that you would like to do this year? Would you like the club to host a clinic? Group trail rides? Fun shows? Picnics? More specifically, provide suggestions on what days and times work best for your household to attend club activities. A goal of the club s this year is to get members more active in our activities. Please let us know what you would like to do this year. Classified Corral FOR LEASE: Nautique is a great mare for partial/half lease $ ! She is super sweet, bombproof, excellent ground manners and great with kids. I really can't put into words how wonderful this horse is, please come meet her! I would prefer an intermediate to advanced rider, but would consider a beginner. She is beginner safe. She'd also make a great family lease, she does fine with groups of people grooming and leading (even with a rider). She's very kid safe, and would make a great learning experience. Great stops with "whoa" and goes w/t/c. If you don't have tack or equipment, mine is available. Price is negotiable, and depends where she's being boarded. This is only a half lease, so your choice of 3-4 days a week. I'm flexible with location, but contact me soon because we're moving her to a new farm before March. Once we move her she stays. I'd prefer to keep her in Pasadena, but would also consider Bel Air/Churchville, Maryland. I've been looking at farms on the water, where you could enjoy riding along the beach and waterfront, riding arena is a must and lots of trails on the farm and local area. I'm happy to send videos and pictures. Please text/call or me if you're interested or have any questions, Thank you! Pictures of Nautique are featured to the right >>>>>>>> FOR HIRE: Landscaping and tree services available. *Tree Removal/pruning/planting *Yard clean-ups *Landscaping *Pond Construction *Bob Cat Services *Trenching and much more.
