3 Anglo-Russian Briefing Erzherzog Ludwig von Hapsburg-Lothringen A Franco-German offensive against Berlin is anticipated to commence within one week. It is clear that troop and equipment concentrations are being accumulated in the vicinity of Magdeburg. In order to disrupt this concentration you are ordered to cut the main post road between Leipzig and Magdeburg, and to engage and eliminate any troops found on or near the post road. You have at your immediate disposal an Austrian brigade, supported by a reinforced Austrian Light brigade and a reinforced Russian Jager brigade. This force is supported by elements of the reserve corps, composed of a brigade of Russian Grenadiers [approximately 2,000 men] and a Kurassier brigade [approximately 800 men]. The cavalry have been sent north, and it is believed that they have already established themselves upon the post road although this is unconfirmed. Should your attack on the post road be compromised your line of retreat shall be upon your original axis of arrival.

5 Carnage&GloryII Napoleonic Battle Scenario Fictional Battle of Magdeburg, August 2, 1813: After Action Report Marshal de l Empire Michel Ney defeats Erzherzog Ludwig von Hapsburg- Lothringen Ney had been tasked with holding open the post road between Leipzig and Magdeburg, to ensure that vital supplies be transported northward to Magdeburg in advance of Napoleon s intended drive on Berlin. During the morning, his troops had rested, but in the early afternoon, signs of enemy activity became apparent, as Austrian Uhlans probed the highroad towards the post road. Ney ordered GD Solignac to divide his command, sending GB Gratien with six battalions of French infantry to the north to Michel Ney hold the extreme left flank of the position, and the most vulnerable area of the post road, whilst GM Rechburg, took the Bavarian contingent to the right covering the small hamlet to the east of the post road and the woods slightly to the north of the hamlet. Meanwhile, GD Leval was ordered to deploy his forces in the center, defending the approaches to the hamlet at the intersection of the highroad and post road, which Ney assumed would be the focus of the allied attack. Ludwig divided his forces into three distinct columns, on the left, the Russians commanded by GM Prinz zu Siberia, was tasked to clear the wood, and seize the hamlet just in advance of the post road; in the center GM von Berenburg with the Grenzers and Hungarians was ordered to assault the hamlet straddling the post road. Iinitially, GM Mayer was to support von Berenburg, but the movement of the French towards the Austrian right, forced this command to move to counter this threat and adopt a more defensive posture protecting the flank of the intended assault on the center. The opening shot came from an Austrian battery in the center, inflicting minor casualties amongst the Franfurt battalion of GB Grandjean s brigade. On the southern side of the field, Bavarians and Russians rushed forward to occupy the small hamlet, and woods. A Russian Jager regiment took possession of the woods, whilst a Bavarian battalion of the Ysenburg Regiment gained possession of the hamlet. The Russians immediately launched a successful attack on the hamlet, one battalion being thrown Erzherzog Lud wig back with a second battalion forcibly entering the buildings closest to the post road. A sanguinary fight ensued, which ultimately resulted in the overthrow of the Bavarian defenders, after the Russians fed a third battalion into the combat. To the south of the hamlet, a supporting group of Austrian Uhlans were caught flatfooted by a force of Bavarian Dragoons, who successfully overthrew the Uhlans, even following a damaging volley from carbines fired from the saddle. In the wood line, the Jagers had advanced to the western most portion, and were met by Bavarian and Baden battalions of GB Rechburg and GB Porbeck s brigades. One Russian battalion sallied from the woods in an attempt to overthrow the Baden troops, but was met with disciplined volleys, which sent the Russians running back to the safety of the wood line. A Bavarian battery was able to give some supportive fire against the Jagers on the wood line, which had the effect of causing the Jagers to advance toward the edge of wood, where they came under close range musket fire from the Bavarian and Baden infantry, and which Fictional Battle of Magdeburg, August 2, 1813

6 Carnage&GloryII Napoleonic Battle Scenario ultimately resulted in their collapse. At which point the Bavarian and Baden Battalions advanced to the edge of the wood to occupy the hedge line, gaining the protection of the cover without venturing into the woods themselves. In the center, the Austrians gun line continued to pound the Frankfurt, Baden and Hesse- Darmstadt troops, eventually twenty-four cannon, including a Russian Light Battery, were concentrated against the Franco-German center in preparation for the anticipated Austrian attack. As the Russian battery joined the gun line, GB von Porbeck concerned by the threat to the center ordered the 2.Nassau regiment to counterattack the protective allied skirmish line, formed by an exposed battalion of Grenzer deployed directly in advance of the Russian gun position. The Grenzer offered a rolling fire, and then ran for safety behind the guns, but they had advanced too far, and were caught by the Nassau battalion, before reaching the safety of the guns and lost a number of men. With the Grenzer threat eliminated the Nassauer s now bravely charged forward, against the Russian guns. Leading the attack, GM von Porbeck was thrown from his horse as the Russian artillery decimated the over-extended Nassau battalion. Von Porbeck quickly remounted in time to see the countercharge of the supporting Austrian Uhlans, who had been formed in support of the Russian guns. In the ensuing mayhem, the Nassau battalion lost their standard, and von Porbeck lost his second mount, within as many minutes, and was captured. On the northern side of the field, the French regiments had adopted open order to better negotiate the difficult terrain of the two watercourses and surrounding swampy meadows that crossed the post road. However, once through this terrain, they quickly deployed to line, and advanced towards the Austrians regiments of GM Mayer. All was going well for GB Gratien, when his attention was drawn to the north along the post road. As over a rise cantered what appeared to be a brigade of Austrian Kurassier, and which were now bearing down directly upon his exposed flank. Two battalions were quickly thrown into square, but a third, with no time to react, was caught in line by four squadrons of Kurassier. All seemed lost for the French, but they calmly awaited the Kurassier and unleashed devastating volleys at point blank range, which threw the attacking Austrians into disarray resulting in their retirement, and effective removal from the engagement. On the southern side of the field, the Bavarian Dragoons observed a battalion of the Perm Infantry regiment in a supporting line to the east of the small hamlet, now occupied by a Russian battalion. They charged, and the gallant Russians, with no time to form square, and with poor fire discipline, were ridden over by the Bavarians who took a standard in the process. Shortly thereafter, and on their third attempt, and clearly inspired by the success of their cavalry, the Bavarian infantry to the west of the hamlet surged forward against the Russian defenders. The Russians, exhausted and shocked by the sight of the Perm Infantry battalions loss, were manfully thrown out of the hamlet and poured eastward. In the center, GD Leval suffered a minor wound whilst addressing the Frankfurt battalion that was taking substantial casualties from the combined attention of the Austro-Russian gun line. Then out of the smoke hurtled two squadrons of Austrian Kurassiers, these crashed into the Frankfurt battalion, who broke seeking shelter behind a battalion of newly arrived Regiment de Marine infantry. This French battalion, calmly awaited the Kurassier, and unleashed a devastating volley that stopped the Kurassier in their tracks. In effect the Austrian attack in the center was unable to press any advantage the artillery had gained, as first on Grenzer, then a Hungarian battalion had been sent into the woods, in support of the Russian Jagers. Then the second Grenzer battalion was redirected to the north to supplement GM Mayer s command. To the south, the battered command of GM Prinz zu Siberia was overjoyed to receive the reinforcement of the Grenadier brigade of Ob Kozaczkoffski. 7 Carnage&GloryII Napoleonic Battle Scenario Jager in open order, the Pavlovski Grenadier regiment drove straight for the Bavarian artillery that had caused so much damage to the Jagers within the wood, whilst the Ekaterinoslav regiment charged toward the hamlet. In an attempt to bolster the defense of the Bavarian artillery, Ney had ridden over to the battery only moments before the Pavlovski battalions crashed into sight. The battery held and loosed off double canister into the charging grenadiers, but their impetus was too great, and in the ensuing melee around the guns, Ney suffered a minor back wound from a bayonet thrust from a Pavlovski grenadier. The battery with insufficient gun teams, left five of six cannon abandoned, and the remaining crew ran for cover, carrying the wounded Ney with them, to a supporting Bavarian battalion. At the hamlet the Bavarians were able to resist the assault of the Ekaterinoslav Grenadiers and they were bundled unceremoniously to the east away from their prime objective of the post road. At this point Erzherzog Ludwig needed to take stock. With his assault on the center ineffective, his resistance on the right, being threatened by French reinforcements, including battalions of regiment de Marine, Cuirassiers and artillery. The only point of advantage lay in the area of the hamlet on the south of the field, but this held little merit toward the strategic goal of cutting the post road. He therefore concluded that his best decision would be to retire eastward. As a consequence of this decision, Ney was successful in holding open the post road, and as the Austrians and Russians retired, the column of wagons carrying the supplies for Napoleon s intended assault on Berlin from Magdeburg, trundled northward unmolested. The Franco Germans had lost eight percent of their strength, 1,346 men, including 468 prisoners, including five cannon, one standard and GM von Porbeck, whilst the Austro- Russians had lost thirteen percent, 2,200 men, including 677 prisoners, and one standard. The exploits of the Bavarian battery Wagner which had ultimately saved Ney from imminent capture by the Pavlovski Grenadiers, earned them great personal praise and the reward of numerous Legion d Honneur amongst it s decimated ranks.
