1 Biographies 2018 Bowker Lectures Professor Robert Bowker PhD, Neurobiology, University of Pennsylvania, 1979 VMD, Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, 1973 BS, Biology/Chemistry, Springfield College, 1969 Professor Bowker is head of the Hoof Laboratory Research Team based at Michigan State University and a principle lecturer at the Australian College of Equine Podiotherapy. Professor Bowker concentrates on equine foot function at a cellular level, demonstrating the relationship between internal and external hoof structures in both health and disease. He also discusses the effects of diet, exercise and dental hygiene. In his lectures he relates musculoskeletal and fascial systems of the entire horse. His research interests focus on navicular syndrome, laminitis and upper body changes in the anatomy in terms of how our husbandry practices and their contributions affect these issues. Sharon May-Davis PhD c/s, M. App. Sc., B. App. Sc., ACHM., EBW., EMR. Affiliation: University of New England; Keith and Dorothy MacKay Scholarship; RTS Australian Government Scholarship. Sharon has been around horses in one form or another since she was 3, now some 55 years later she has travelled the World reporting on anatomic anomalies, primitive traits and rehabilitation. Initially starting from a Thoroughbred and riding background, Sharon has worked with horses at a competitive level since she was 14. Now she lectures worldwide on controversial topics such as the Congenital Malformations of C6, C7 and the 1 st Sternal Rib, The Dilemma of the Absent Lamellae and Primitive Preservation. Her drive and passion has seen many scientific papers published in recognised journals as either the sole author, lead author or 2 nd author. At present, Sharon has been collecting and publishing data on Primitive Horses in an effort to understand modern equine anatomy and how best to manage its structures for performance and longevity.

2 Dr Helen M S Davies BAgSci(hons). MAgrSc. BVSc. PhD. Associate Professor in Veterinary Anatomy, The University of Melbourne. Leader of the Functional Anatomy and Biomechanics research group in the Department of Veterinary Biosciences. Helen is a veterinarian, teacher, research scientist and rider who has been teaching riding, training and re-training horses since She is the author and co-author of several book chapters (in Equine Podiatry 2007, and Equine Laminitis 2017), many research papers concerning the anatomy and function of the equine hoof, and most recently co- author of a text book on the fascial anatomy of the equine forelimb (2018). The primary aim of her research is to improve our understanding of functional anatomy by developing practical and simple non-invasive methods of measuring or assessing responses to specific exercise or other management procedures. These measurement methods may then be used to assist in developing and directing interventions to optimise function and help to avoid the accumulation of damage as well as promoting healing of pre-existing damage. Kirsty Swinton Dip HBM EEBW EDO student Kirsty Swinton is an equine musculoskeletal therapist based in Gisborne in the Macedon Ranges of Victoria Australia. Kirsty has been running her business Equine Dynamics since the beginning of 2010, and this has evolved over the years into a business offering a very unique range of modalities. As Kirsty often says, it s not just massage! Kirsty started her educational journey in 2008, when an injury to her own horse led her to study with Equinology. This awakened a passion that has almost become an obsession, and has led Kirsty to study from many different industry leaders, most recently in the USA studying Equine Osteopathy at the Vluggen Institute. Kirsty s training and experience includes Equine Osteopathy, Advanced Sports Massage, Myofascial Release, Saddle Fitting and Shoeing Dynamics, Kinesiology and Biomechanical taping techniques, Biomechanics, Conformation, Lameness and Gait Abnormalities, Anatomy and Dissections, Rehabilitation, Photonic (cold laser) and Microcurrent Therapy, and Vet Nursing.

3 Dr Nerida Richards B Rur. Sc (Hon1) PhD RAnNutr Nerida graduated from the University of New England with a degree in Rural Science in 1999 and a PhD in Equine Nutrition in Nerida is a registered animal nutritionist (equine) with the Nutrition Society of Australia. Nerida founded Equilize Horse Nutrition in 2003 and has been working as a consulting equine nutritionist ever since, providing high level technical support to feed and supplement companies in Australia and abroad. The last 15 years has seen Nerida work with more than 30 companies, focussing on product development, education, research and on-farm support. Nerida also developed and commercialised the FeedXL ration balancing software that is used extensively by horse owners here in Australia as well as the USA, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, the Middle East and South-East Asia. A true country girl at heart, Nerida has always had a love of horses, a passion for agriculture and a zeal for and natural understanding of nutrition. In her typical style of combining credible science with practical knowledge and a bunch of props she stole from her kids, Nerida shares her knowledge in a way that is easy to understand and simple to put into practice to improve the health and performance of your own horses. Jane Clothier Jane Clothier first started learning equine bodywork some 16 years ago in the UK, before moving to Australia in With a growing bodywork practice on the north coast of NSW, she soon began creating, presenting and coordinating workshops. In 2012, she created a blog website, with the intention of using articles on topics such as neck threadworms and saddle fit issues as a resource for her local clients. Surprisingly, this took off, and today thehorsesback.com enjoys a wide international audience of over 500k readers in 200 territories. Always driven by curiosity, Jane then commenced postgraduate study to explore something she had noticed in her work, namely that there seemed to be something a bit different about some horses that had been born prematurely. She is now in her final year of a PhD at the University of New England, based at CSIRO in Armidale, NSW, and has recently started to publish results. Meanwhile, she continues to practice bodywork, benefitting from the unique interplay between the clinical presentations of her equine clients and her current research outcomes.

Dip. in Animal Biomechanical Medicine, enabling her to apply her osteopathic skills to animals. She has performed and attended numerous equine dissections over the past nine years to gain a deeper understanding of the interrelationship between the structure and function of the horse. Heidi Richardson B.App Sci (MIT) Heidi has competed in Pony Club, Show Jumping, Eventing, Barrel Racing and Endurance, and now enjoys helping her father with his small but successful harness racing team. Eventually Heidi s love of horses well-being led her to search out a career in Equine Rehabilitation. Along the way she completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Medical Imaging Technology, and she s somewhat obsessed with X-rays and Ultrasounds of horses and, in particular, tendon injuries and treatments. A certificate in Equine Shiatsu massage and attendances at various veterinary conferences add to her growing knowledge base. Heidi is open minded and practical, and loves to get involved in the science and research of Laser Phototherapy. An Equine Laser Therapist first and foremost, her advice is based on 20 years of using Laser Phototherapy with horses and dogs, having worked in the UK, Australia and NZ.
