We create our magazine in-house and it is printed on paper that has been produced using pulp from sustainable forestry, ensuring it is kind to the environment while keeping costs to a minimum. We hope you enjoy hearing about the work your support makes possible, and if you ever have any questions or suggestions we would love you to write to us or nataliematthews-graves@ worldhorsewelfare.org Welcome from the Chief Executive 2014 has been another pivotal year for our campaigning work. Fly-grazing in the UK is a scourge that causes untold equine suffering and blights so many people s lives. Thanks in no small part to your support our campaign against fly-grazing, in conjunction with other animal welfare and countryside organisations, received a significant boost this autumn that you can read about from page 10. There is also plenty to report on our European campaigning front (see page 16). This summer we hosted The 7th International Colloquium on Working Equids, quite possibly the biggest event that we have ever organised. Thanks to our team at the charity, ably supported by an outstanding group of volunteers, the week was a huge success. We were especially pleased to welcome more than 150 welfare and veterinary experts from 27 different countries. This conference proved to be the perfect platform in rallying everyone in the field to work together with human development organisations, universities and governments (see page 14). As Winter looms, we are even more aware of the stocking levels at our farms. With the support of nearly 200 new rehomers, we have had one of the most successful years for our rehoming scheme ever. Tragically the reality is that thousands of horses remain at risk in Britain, but it is heartening to have a bit more confidence that we will have the space this Winter to help those animals that are in most desperate need. Our front cover star, Major, is certainly a worthy winner of the title Rehomed Horse of the Year for Rehomer Janis story shows just how worthwhile our work is, and how important you all are to us as rehomers and supporters read their story from page 4. 3 A 'Major' achievement World Horse Welfare Bowmore Major Islay Mist is our Rehomed Horse of the Year 2014 With thousands of horses across the country still at risk of needing rescuing by welfare charities, rehoming remains a vital part of our work. What better way to show just how rewarding rehoming a horse or pony from a charity can be than by running our second-ever competition to find our Rehomed Horse of the Year? Once again, we had a wonderful array of entries and would like to say a huge thank you to each and every one of you who got in touch to tell us why your rehomed horse or pony should be our Rehomed Horse of the Year The stories you told us ranged from those that tugged at the heartstrings to those that made us laugh helplessly and we loved them all. As with last year's competition, it was incredibly difficult to choose our winner rest assured we found it very hard to pick just one story from all the fantastic entries we received. However, we had to choose a winner and this year it is grey Highland gelding World Horse Welfare Bowmore Major Islay Mist, known as Major to his friends and rehomed by Janis Clark in For Janis, the road to a perfect partnership has not been easy. After suffering heartbreak with her first two horses, Janis had resolved never to have another. However, Major changed her mind when she visited Belwade Farm in Spring 2006 after walking over to stand with her as she looked round the farm. After going home, Janis couldn't stop thinking about Major and says: I couldn t get him out of my head he was just lovely." She phoned the farm to offer Major a home and so their partnership began. "Rehoming from World Horse Welfare was so easy everyone at the farm was so helpful. It's great to know that if ever you need it, friendly, expert help is only a phone call away." Here is the entry which persuaded us that Janis' beloved Major deserved to be Rehomed Horse of the Year 2014 Major's story I lost my first pony to grass sickness and the second to colic after breaking his pedal bone. Both experiences were so painful, I made up my mind never to have another horse again. Then, in Easter 2006, on a visit to Belwade Farm, I saw Major, standing in a large field of assorted horses. Something clicked and my resolve was broken. Two months later, he came home with me, where he has been a major part of my life since then and will continue to be so forever. Major came over to me in the field and stayed with me we just clicked. Handsome, honest, generous, gentle, friendly, forgiving, Major is a wonderful ambassador for World Horse Welfare. His easy-going temperament shatters the myth that rescue horses have problems. He gives confidence to those who are nervous and is fun for those who are not! He does not have a bad bone in his body and is loved by everyone who knows him. His talents extend to the literary where he has written his own blog since 2008 attracting more than 100 followers from over the world: Major is a wonderful ambassador, proving just how much horses from a charity can give. Major has also helped raise money for other charities too. In June 2013, he was specially chosen to carry 90-year-old Neva MacDonald Haig on her sponsored ride for the launch of H.E.A.R.T (Highland Equine and Riding Therapy). He participated in the worldwide non-stop riding lesson to raise money for the RDA (Riding for the Disabled) in September He always wears a purple and a red poppy on Remembrance Day to commemorate all the horses and humans who have died in wars. I try to make his life interesting! We are lucky to live in a very beautiful part of Scotland on the shores of Loch Ness, so we have many hacks through breathtaking scenery. Major likes nothing better than being in the water, especially on a hot day. Major has tasted success in the show world though he is very modest about his achievements. In August 2009, he was Working Pony Champion at the Black Isle Show. Then in September 2010, he was Reserve Overall Champion at the North of Scotland Highland Pony Show. He doesn t always look so clean and tidy though, and in fact he seizes every opportunity to cover himself in mud! REHOMING Major has turned his hoof to many things since being rehomed by Janis. They enjoy hacking through the spectacular scenery around the centre where he is kept and even paddling in Loch Ness. Major has raised money for a variety of charities, including carrying 90-year-old Neva MacDonald Haig, who personally requested him due to his famously gentle and generous nature, on her sponsored ride for the launch of Highland Equine and Riding Therapy. Major is a great friend to people of all ages, stages and abilities and has even attained literary prowess by starting his own blog ( Janis comments that: Major's greatest achievement is who he is as a person. He is so well loved, reliable and totally irreplaceable. He s one of us, one of the crowd. Janis is keen to show others that rehoming a horse from World Horse Welfare is incredibly worthwhile, saying that: Some people shy away from rehoming from a charity, thinking you will get a problem horse, but horses are what you make them with plenty of time and love they can give you so much. "I entered the competition to show people that you don't get a horse with problems when you rehome from a charity their horses can give you so much." Major is a laid-back character, who takes this characteristic to the extreme. On occasions members of the public have reported that a horse is lying dead in the outside school, as Major enjoys a snooze. Sometimes, it is hard to persuade him that other horses would like to use the school, with the result that some just work round him while he sleeps on. His greatest achievement is who he is as a person. Everyone knows and loves Major. These are just some examples of Major s life with me. He has put his hoof to many other things: Le Trec, in-hand work and dressage to name but a few. Even if he could never be ridden again, it would not matter to me. He is now 15 and I am 60. He is a part of my family and one of my best friends and my wish is that we will grow very old together! Janis, Major's rehomer We hope you enjoyed reading Major's story as much as we did and would like to encourage all our rehomers to enter their World Horse Welfare horse or pony again next year, even if you didn't win this time. We really did struggle to pick a winner and would love to be able to recognise you all. REHOMING 4 Has Major's story inspired you to rehome?......find out more at: 5

Equine weight discussed The dangerous implications for overweight horses The Animal Health Trust (AHT) has recently discovered that equine weight problems are on the up and that there are connections between weight and many more chronic conditions than just laminitis. Hyperlipemia, which could lead to cardiovascular disease; osteochondrosis, which causes the bones to rot due to lack of blood supply; and Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID, also known as Cushing s Disease) are all linked to excess weight. Research has suggested that when a horse is very overweight it is just as great a concern, if not more so, as being underweight. World Horse Welfare s Deputy Head of UK Support, Sam Chubbock, states: A previously overweight horse will need to be carefully managed for the rest of its life. This is due to the high likelihood of reoccurrence as well as the risk of associated health problems. Research conducted by the AHT revealed that although competition horses are less inclined to carry exess weight due to the nature of their work, leisure horses are in fact twice as likely and unridden horses three times more likely to develop weight problems than the competing animal. Ria on arrival into our care dangerously overweight and at risk of laminitis A previously overweight horse will need to be carefully managed for the rest of its life. Bursary researches Equine Grass Sickness Thanks to your support, we have been able to grant bursaries for vital research across the UK and overseas. Donations have been used to investigate the causes of Equine Grass Sickness (EGS) and its extremely high mortality rate, which stands at 75-85%. EGS comes in three distinct forms: acute, subacute and chronic. Invariably, acute and subacute sufferers will die or have to be euthanized within 72 hours, and although chronic cases can sometimes be returned to health with intensive and constant care, many of these horses also do not recover. First incidences emerged in Scotland in 1907 and have become increasingly common ever since. In October 2012 a pilot vaccine was developed by AHT and a trial is expected to launch shortly. Bethan Mackenzie, studying at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh, has been researching the possible link between EGS and grazing containing large quantities of spores produced by the fungus Fusarium. Bethan undertook research by testing grass samples in both affected fields and geographically close control fields in the UK. In each field, 20 samples of grass were taken from a range of carefully selected and consistent areas. 1.0g of grass was taken from each of the 20 samples and, in association with the Food Environment Research Agency, tested microscopically for presence of Fusarium. Results confirmed in all but one of the samples that Fusarium was present in a far higher quantity in the affected fields, revealing a likely connection between EGS and the presence of the fungus. We thank Bethan for her invaluable research, and hope this offers new windows of opportunity for further testing. Equine Grass Sickness sufferer There are ways and means to ensure feeding is done in the right way to prevent over-eating: owners should consider the breed of their horse - pony breeds and cob types are more susceptible to weight gain due to their inherent ability to survive in harsh conditions. It should be assessed whether a horse needs to be on lush grass, or whether he would be better on restricted grazing. Investing in hay nets with smaller holes can ensure a horse is not rushing and tempting you to refill his net. Owners should determine whether their horse needs to have a hard feed many do not need it and receive adequate nutrition through a supplement or mineral lick. If a horse or pony needs a hard feed, a specialists can advise what low calorie, sugar- or fat-free options are available and about the quantity he needs guidance is always available. Ria after our care We welcome change in approach Racing world cracks down on use of anabolic steroids In June World Horse Welfare welcomed the more rigorous zero-tolerance approach to steroid abuse announced by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), and encouraged robust enforcement of the new rules. The new regulations include 14-month bans on racing for any horse that tests positive for anabolic steroids and will begin restrictions on foreign runners. World Horse Welfare fully supports a zero-tolerance doping policy in racing to protect the welfare, safety and health of racehorses, said Roly. We congratulate the British Horseracing Authority for once again leading the world in its anti-doping protocols. We hope this more robust policy will encourage other federations to harmonise towards ever higher standards around the globe to help better protect racehorse welfare. This announcement does provide an opportunity to reflect on whether this is a truly zero-tolerance policy. The punishment has to fit the crime and we believe there must be severe penalties for keepers or owners in breach of this rule to serve as a robust deterrent. 5 Owner who caused unimaginable suffering is banned from keeping equines A woman has been banned from keeping equines for three years after providing inadequate care to a two-month-old foal, named Star. The foal was wearing a headcollar that had been left unadjusted for an extended period of time, leading it to embed itself into his nose and poll area. The embedding was so extreme that flesh had begun to grow over parts of the headcollar, and it had caused damage to his nasal cavity and skull. World Horse Welfare s Field Officer for the region, Nick White, attended the scene alongside the RSPCA and a veterinary surgeon from the Royal Veterinary College and the foal was quickly removed and signed over to World Horse Welfare. Ms Pascale Musk of Hertfordshire, after pleading guilty to charges of animal cruelty, was sentenced this Summer. At the beginning of the year Ms Musk had pleaded not guilty to the charges under section four of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, however, on August 4th, she changed her plea to guilty. At Watford Magistrates Court Ms Musk received a three-year ban from owning or keeping equines, was ordered to undertake 100 hours of unpaid community service work - to be served within 12 months - and made to pay 500 in costs and a 60 victim surcharge. World Horse Welfare high flyers Despite the horrendous condition of some of our horses when they arrive, there is nearly always unseen and hidden potential waiting to be uncovered by our grooms and rehomers. Some go on to become reliable companions, hacking horses or versatile riding club types. Some have worked for the police or turned their hoof to therapy for the disabled. There are also a few who go on to perform on some of the biggest equine stages, both in the UK and beyond. World Horse Welfare Islay competes at the biggest equestrian games in the world Islay discovered a talent for vaulting after being rehomed by Liz Mackay, competing in several championships for Great Britain since 2006 and most notably winning an event in Moorsele this year with a score of in the individual female category with vaulter Lesley Campbell. Now 19 years old and an impressive 17.3hh, he qualified for this year's World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Normandy when he was spotted by Canadian vaulting duo, sisters Jeanine and Angelique Van der Sluijs. They had qualified but were unable to bring their own horse. They approached Liz and Islay, competed at the CHIO in Aachen in June and decided Islay was the horse they wanted to take them to WEG. They went on to put in an impressive performance, finishing 11th in the Pas-de-Deux section of the competition. Liz is quick to praise both Islay and all who worked with him there: The atmosphere was amazing and quite electric. It was a big stage and we had to work on trust and past experience of knowing each other a partnership built up over the 12 years he has been with me. His Canadian vaulters had also built up a special relationship of trust with him and he had confidence in his whole team. I was also lucky to have a brilliant competition groom in Helen Rogerson and an extra pair of hands from Charlie Turner. Keep your eye out for more news on Star over the coming months. Fines of over 2000 and community service for owners who neglected horses. A Mr Rob Shufflebotham of Furmston Place, in Leek, and a Mr Shaun Edgecox of Leek Road, in Endon, have been fined a combined total of over 4000 for failing to meet the needs of horses for charges that relate to offences under the Animal Welfare Act. The horses, two of whom were heavily pregnant, were being kept in unsuitable conditions alongside cattle. World Horse Welfare Field Officer Rachel Andrews explains: These horses were being kept in a very large steel framed barn along with a herd of cows. The conditions under foot were extremely dirty and covered in cattle and horse manure. The ventilation was very poor and there was little light. There was also a lot of dangerous farm equipment around and a number of hazards so it was completely unsuitable for all of the animals, but predominantly for those due to One of the pregnant mares seized from the give birth. Whilst there was grazing outside it was not clear how much turn-out the Staffordshire case, pictured shortly after horses were getting, but judging by their body condition they were not being fed a giving birth. suitable diet during the winter months, especially the pregnant mares who were very underweight for horses who were in foal. Both owners pleaded guilty to the charges at an earlier hearing. Mr Shufflebotham was fined 2,000 with a victim surcharge of 60 and Mr Edgecox 2,393, also with a victim surcharge of 60. Additionally, they were ordered to undertake unpaid community service 240 hours were ordered for both men. The two most severely affected horses, Amara and Artic Splash of Inspiration (Splash), along with others from the site, were taken for rehabilitation to Penny Farm, our Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Blackpool, Lancashire. Splash has already found a new home and Amara was available for rehoming at the time of going to print. Jade and Rocky display impressive skills at Blair Castle World Horse Welfare Little Rock (Rocky) came to us in 2001 and was quickly rehomed from Penny Farm, Blackpool, by the Sturrock family. Rocky has excelled in the jumping and showing arenas, recently qualifying for The BHS Working Hunter Finals. He attended this final at the Blair Castle International Horse Trials and County Fair where he finished 4th in the Stewarts Building Working Hunter Championship amongst other horses from tough qualifiers around the country. Impressively, Rocky and Jade went on to win the Fingask Castle Style Jumping Championship. Jade tells us that: He had an amazing time and loved showing off in front of the crowds. It is fantastic to hear that our rehomed horses are enjoying life to the full and being such wonderful advocates for the World Horse Welfare Rehoming Scheme. Four rehomed horses and ponies wow the crowds at Burghley In September, a small team of four World Horse Welfare horses and ponies were lucky enough to get the chance to perform in the Burghley arena. This was thanks to dedicated rehomer Anne Howard, who approached the committee about showcasing rehomed horses. The team in the ring consisted of Anne s own daughter Olivia on Lanesfield Lyrical, Jan Willis on Wilma and two of our own grooms: Amy Gedge on Sinbad and Briony Gilks with Norfolk Swing. All four looked beautiful and performed wonderfully. Anne tells us that: The four horses who took part really earned the right to be there. The event offered me the chance to show off the variety of horses that you can rehome. The girls were presented with Burghley rosettes, and there was a sincere sense of achievement not only for the girls, but for the horses themselves too. 6 Stopping the Scourge Charities and rural organisations join forces to help stop fly-grazing A major milestone in our campaign for tougher laws against fly-grazing was reached on 3rd September when Defra Minister Lord de Mauley said legislation was a distinct possibility. The Minister made the comments during a oneday inquiry on horse welfare and fly-grazing by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee (Efracom) which scrutinizes Defra policy. At the inquiry, our own Roly Owers gave compelling evidence of the need for better laws, alongside colleagues from the RSPCA and the British Horse Society, in addition to rural organisations, local government and representatives of Gypsies and Travellers. In advance of Efracom - and an expected parliamentary debate on a proposed Control of Horses (England) Bill on October 24th - a World Horse Welfare-led coalition of welfare charities and countryside organisations (including the Countryside Alliance, CLA, National Farmers Union, RSPCA, Blue Cross, British Horse Society, Redwings Horse Sanctuary and HorseWorld) launched our joint report on the impacts of fly-grazing on horses and humans, entitled 'Stop the Scourge: Time to address unlawful fly-grazing in England'. The report, and its accompanying map of fly-grazing hot spots in England and dossier of case studies, was the result of summer-long collaboration and evidence-gathering which showed that fly-grazing has increased in England since autumn last year, with 3,000-4,000 horses now estimated to be grazing on land without the owner s or occupier s permission (in November last year the estimate was 2,000-3,000). The coalition strongly suspects that the introduction of a Control of Horses (Wales) Act early this year has pushed the problem over the border. Fly-grazing and the horse crisis Although by no means comprehensively responsible for Britain s horse crisis which has put thousands of horses at risk of abandonment or neglect, fly-grazing is a significant factor in creating more welfare problems (16% of World Horse Welfare s record intake of horses in 2013 were fly-grazing). But what is less visible is the impact of fly-grazing on people who own, live near or use the land on which the horses are left. Rural communities are, in some cases, at real risk due to loose horses that may eat or destroy local crops and produce, cause obstruction and even injure members of the public. Landowners are often threatened or intimidated by the owners if they try to remove the horses from their land, and the legal process of removing them is costly and needlessly long-winded. Earlier evidence given at Efracom made it clear that action needs to be taken to tackle this growing issue. Roly, alongside the BHS and RSPCA highlighted that fly-grazers can currently avoid having to take responsibility for their animals due to inadequacies of legislation and difficulty tracing owners. The current equine identification system (horse passports) is faulty and impossible to enforce after the closure of the UK s only central equine database in However, even better identification laws (which will come into force in see News in Pictures) will need strict enforcement and time to bed in properly, making it a long-term not a short-term answer, according to Roly. Fly-grazing is a practice frequently associated with Gypsy and Traveller communities. However, in his evidence Roly stressed that there were also a number of other groups involved, including dealers, unregistered breeders and unlicensed rescue operations. Joseph G Jones, spokesman from the Gypsy Council and other Gyspsy and Traveller representatives discussed the problems that these communities face, commenting on the lack of grazing available to them, the lack of demand for their horses in the economic climate and a lack of education. "Fly-grazing is too easy to get away with. There must be a deterrent." Roly Owers Act before 24th October If you are reading this before 24th October there is still time to make a significant difference before the second reading. Write to your local MP through our latest action even a small contribution makes a huge difference in the move to end fly-grazing. To contribute, please visit: worldhorsewelfare.org/flygrazingaction The evidence gathered at Efracom should paint a compelling picture for the need for government to introduce better laws. Please ask your MP to support Julian Sturdy MP's Private Members' Bill for a Control of Horses (England) Act. "Legislation is a distinct possibility." Defra Minister Lord de Mauley Risk to horses and the public WELFARE The risk to the public was later addressed, drawing attention to the increased disease risk of fly-grazing horses mixing with other horses and livestock. MPs were also asked to consider that there have been two human fatalities caused by collisions of vehicles with fly-grazed horses in England so far, with a far higher number of accidents and injuries. A Suffolk coroner, speaking in relation to one of these fatal accidents, said that future deaths would occur unless action was taken. WELFARE 10 11

International updates Costa Rica: Building the trust of the indigenous population World Horse Welfare began a programme in the south of Costa Rica at the start of The programme aims to improve the welfare of the horses by offering training opportunities and support in horse care to the indigenous people living within the Guaymi Reserve. The team in Costa Rica, consisting of a programme coordinator, farrier and vet, have been visiting the six communities within the programme's reach on a monthly basis and have generated increasing interest from the local Ngobe/Guaymi people. However, when first attempting to engage the native people, they were met with some scepticism. Tiffany Morse, World Horse Welfare s Programme Coordinator, explains: "When we first started entering the Guaymi reservation to help them with their horses, we drew crowds of wide-eyed on-lookers, dressed in their colourful traditional wear and trotting their horses at their side. You can tell neither owner nor horse had seen anything like us outsiders before doing something for them in the reserve. One of the leaders came to me and said that there would have been even more horses that day to receive our services, but that many people in the reserve could not believe someone from the outside was really going to show up. In the end, all who attended were very grateful and showed much interest, eventually coming out of their shells to share and learn." The team regularly provide support and training to the horse owners who are responsible for 294 horses. These training workshops focus on a variety of issues such as grooming and foot care, parasite control and wound management. Tiffany continues that: Many of the problems that the horses suffer from in the reserve are related to their hooves, so we decided that the first important tool that we would use to promote better welfare would be a hoof pick. Every single horse owner that registered onto our welfare programme was given a personal demonstration and advice on how to hold up their horse's foot and clean it out. We explained the importance of doing this daily and made sure the horse owners felt confident in practicing their new skill. We will continue to teach the horse owners these basic but essential techniques, and encourage horse owners to incorporate this type of care into their daily routine." Community-based programme in Choluteca World Horse Welfare has now been working in Choluteca, Honduras, for over a year. There have been many successes to date: the training and qualification of a group of farriers; the training and qualification of a group of saddlers to create and fit a whole new, more comfortable, harness system; the development of community-based advisors who are located throughout the 19 communities that are currently being reached; and the inclusion of 805 cart horses that directly receive help within the programme. One of the programme's biggest achievements is the development of the children s programme that has begun throughout the small community schools in Choluteca. The education department has kindly given permission to World Horse Welfare to enter schools and work directly with the children. With collaboration from a local school teacher, a story was turned into a pantomime which leads children through the story of a Cholutecan cart horse that has health problems. These problems start to improve only after being attended to by a farrier, a saddler and a veterinary surgeon, highlighting the importance of equine service providers to the younger generation. The children were fascinated and engaged with the pantomime. This was displayed when, at the end of the act, questions were asked and children who displayed that they had learnt from the act earned a prize. The responses showed a marked improvement of their understanding of equine health. The pantomime continues to be used throughout the community schools. Each month visits take place at different schools in Choluteca. So far over 300 children have listened to the story of how the family's cart horse needed attention. We hope that by creating a connection between the child and their family's horse that they will want to keep their own equine healthy, perpetuating good welfare in the future. Changing attitudes in Mexico INTERNATIONAL What is the relationship between lameness and back pain in working horses? There is none, according to traditional belief in Mexico until now. Caroline Abbott, a fifthyear veterinary student at the University of Nottingham, undertook a four-week excursion to Mexico in March 2014 and has recently reported her findings on lameness in working equids and whether this is related to back pain caused by ill-fitting equipment. Welfare assessment in Mexico currently follows a five-fingered approach: Communication, body condition, wounds/skin, lameness/ musculoskeletal, and disease. Injury and lesions caused by tack and harness currently fall into the wounds/skin category and therefore lameness caused by this can be overlooked. Furthermore, although the English definition of lameness is any deviation to the gait and movement of the horse, the Spanish use the word Cojera, translated as uneven motion due to leg injury. This can lead to connections between equipment and lameness being overlooked or not considered. Caroline s research focussed around recent developments in equine research that state stiffness in the thoracolumbar region can decrease ease of motion in carpal, tarsal and stifle joints. Collection of information was through individual animal assessment: 27 equids showing a degree of lameness were assessed, of which 21 were horses and six were donkeys. The animals had a variety of jobs, though the majority included carrying large quantities of water, wood, milk and scrap materials. These horses were examined for lesions, foot balance, quality of shoeing and conformation and were given flexion tests. Of the 27 animals, 22 had wounds over their back and 19 displayed reactions indicative of back pain. Although other problems found in the equids make it hard to be definitive, Caroline s research does indeed show a connection between inappropriate equipment and lameness, allowing World Horse Welfare to challenge long-held views in Mexico and aid local owners in the care of their equines. The long-term aim of the investigation is to find ways to prevent lameness and its results have helped to develop new ways to educate horse and donkey owners in Mexico. We congratulate and thank Caroline for her investigation into such a pressing issue. INTERNATIONAL

7th International Colloquium triggers change Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal explored the importance of governing bodies in the welfare of working equids. The 7th International Colloquium on Working Equids brought together more than 150 delegates from 27 countries, 20 speakers, two princesses, and expert representatives all under the same roof for an intense and inspirational three days of collaboration on how to better improve the lives of the world s 100 million working horses, donkeys and mules. "Governments do have a very important part to play." HRH The Princess Royal Working equids are too often invisible in communities and their key role ignored in too many livelihood systems. The role of livestock like cattle or goats is immediately accepted by the outside world as key to people s survival. But the equid does not even register. This Colloquium will aim to determine why working equids are invisible, and set out the reality of working equids contribution to people and how we demonstrate it. We also must examine how much more these equids could contribute if their welfare improved and the role the veterinary profession can play, as well as what we can do now to encourage this change. Roly Owers What is the role of veterinary science? A number of presentations outlined how equine disease was being treated and prevented, while the role of the vet was highlighted as one communities would listen to and respect. "If working horses disappeared, the world economy would collapse." Professor Derek Knottenbelt OBE Her Royal Highness Princess Haya What role do working equids play in human livelihoods and how well is this currently recognised? Delegates learned how, whether it is donkeys aiding the survival of babies, mules carrying metals to provide the income that feeds whole families or horses carrying children to school so they can get an education, international communities could not live without their vital working equids. The challenge will be how to use what we know to convince other organisations who do not consider the working equid at all. "We need to be proactive and not passive: We need to get equids onto other people s agendas getting them there is the tricky bit in my experience." Joy Pritchard, The Brooke Does a holistic approach to achieving better welfare for working equids produce better outcomes? Her Royal Highness Princess Haya delivered a passionate speech on World Horse Welfare s work overseas and the likelihood of development and aid organisations to work with equine charities. "I really think you are on to something: I do think people are willing to listen." HRH Princess Haya, FEI President Practical workshops The final day of the Colloquium saw all of the delegates travel to Glenda Spooner Farm in Somerset for practical workshops on farriery, body condition, disease, the lives of horses in the UK and much more. Delegates from Africa, to the USA, to Pakistan were surprised that the UK had equine welfare problems and learned that all over the world, the welfare of horses, donkeys and mules could be transformed further by working together. INTERNATIONAL As charities like World Horse Welfare aim to broaden their international programmes to engage the whole community to help educate and change attitudes and behaviours, speakers at the Colloquium showed that this approach can change the lives of working equids more thoroughly and sustainably. "Animal welfare is coming to be recognised as highly relevant to economic development: The welfare of humans and the welfare of animals are closely linked." Tom Morrison, Devec "We need to work together far more collaboratively to be able to create a body of evidence so we can go and sell the role of working equids to governments and humanitarian agencies and I think we have made a really good start." Roly Owers INTERNATIONAL 14 15

The Equine Welfare Project Setting the policy agenda for equines all over Europe How many horses, ponies, donkeys and mules are there in Europe? What are their most pressing welfare challenges? What laws protect equines in the European Union and are these working? Thetford ride a true pleasure On August 3rd 2014 over 80 horses and riders joined us in the private forest land at Cranwich, near Thetford. Glorious sunshine was with us all day and riders enjoyed routes of 6 and 12 miles through some stunning forest scenery, on leafy tracks and through open heathland. Several rehomed horses made appearances, displaying both their new found happiness and their diversity as riding horses. Over 1,750 was raised, which will be put towards vital rescue and rehabilitation work throughout the UK. These are just some of the questions World Horse Welfare hopes to answer in a landmark report we are producing in conjunction with lobbying consortium Eurogroup for Animals this year. The research, launched at an experts' meeting convened in May, was requested by the European Commission to help them assess how a possible Animal Welfare Framework Law might impact on horses and the welfare challenges equine policy might need to address over the next decade. The report is due to be published this autumn and a conference considering the results is expected to be held in early The aim is to provide equines with the individual legislation required to recognise their needs. Our own Public Affairs Officer Hannah Tabram states: "Horses, ponies, donkeys and mules are uniquely versatile animals perhaps the most versatile animals that humans live and work with so they need unique consideration and protection under the law." "Thank you for a fantastic day it was lovely and we all enjoyed it so much." CAMPAIGNS Despite the fact that 70% of the world s equine events reportedly take place across Europe, and that equines are used for sport, leisure and work across the Member States, there is currently no specific European legislation in place whatsoever to protect equines on the continent. They are classed as livestock and information about the size and scale of the equine sector is currently very vague, although we do believe that the number of equines continues to grow. Roly summarises the issue by suggesting that, at this moment in time, "Across Europe we see equines falling in between the cracks of laws designed to protect livestock or companion animals. We now have an excellent opportunity to identify where the gaps are." The report will include recommendations to improve the lives of equines all over Europe, addressing issues such as identification, education on keeping and training, transport and more effective law and enforcement. The overall result could be one that would enable legislation, guidance and educational efforts to go "hand-in-hand" and potentially raise the quality of life offered to Europe's equines. Research has now begun on the project. Watch the experts' meeting at: "Thank you so much for organising such a wonderful ride. Really enjoyed it and will be definitely interested in others in the future." World Horse Welfare holds annual pleasure rides and we would love to welcome you along with us. Take a look at for up to date information, or please contact Fran on or francesplume@worldhorsewelfare.org We are looking to hold new pleasure rides close to our Rescue and Rehoming Centres, starting with our Glenda Spooner Farm at Somerton in Somerset. Keep an eye out for more information on this proposed new event for the charity in the near future. FUNDRAISING WELFARE

To see upcoming events and to find out more about visiting your nearest Rescue and Rehoming Centre go to cute Shetland foal known as International Liam! FARMS The pony agility winners: The Penny Farm Princesses in action Penny Farm Blackpool, Lancashire. Open every Wednesday, weekend and Bank Holiday from 11am to 4pm. Penny Farm's Open Day on Saturday 6th September took the form of a medieval fair and was once again very well-supported. Attractions on the day included a spectacular jousting display by the superb Atkinson Action Horses team always sure to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Other displays included beautiful birds of prey and skilful archery, whilst younger visitors were kept entertained by fairground rides. A 'Made in Lancashire' food and craft area offered showgoers the chance to browse a selection of local specialities. A very special pony agility display featured two teams of our very own ponies: The Penny Farm Princesses versus the Penny Farm Dragons! Both teams were well supported by the audience, with the Princesses victorious on the day. At the time of going to print, Penny Farm were getting ready to host another Horseman's Sunday event on Sunday 28th September. The event features a service, led by Canon Godfrey Hirst, at 12.30pm, which will be preceded by a range of turnout classes including in-hand, lead-rein, 14.2hh and under and 14.3hh and over. Penny Farm have a Halloween Spooktacular on Wednesday 29th October, so do come and join us for some family-friendly Halloween fun. Other upcoming events include the Christmas Fair on 7th December. Delegates learning about the impact poorly-fitting harnesses can have Find our farm on Facebook! Belwade Farm The Atkinson horses and riders thrilled the audience again work before meeting our horses and ponies just a short walk away. The new isolation unit will make it easier and safer for us to process multiple-horse cases coming in, meaning that we should be able to help more horses and ponies in need. The team at Glenda Spooner Farm are in need of more volunteers, especially those who will be able to help in the new Visitor Centre once it is up and running, so if you may be able to help out do get in touch by ing clairesalter@worldhorsewelfare.org or phoning Glenda Spooner Farm played a significant part in The 7th International Colloquium on Working Equids by hosting a hugely successful practical day on Thursday 3rd July (read more about the Colloquium on pp ). Delegates travelled from Royal Holloway University, London, to the farm for a series of practical workshops on topics including foot care, head-comfort and handling, body condition, disease, saddlery and harness-making, owner interaction, and the lives of horses in the UK. During the course of the day, Liam, our Director of International, even got to meet his namesake: a very Some of the fabulous medieval outfits on the day Penny Farm Glenda Spooner Farm Hall Farm Glenda Spooner Farm Somerton, Somerset. Open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2pm until 4pm. The initial phase of the building work at Glenda Spooner Farm has been completed, resulting in a very smart isolation unit and new crew yards. The crew yards are situated just up the hill from where the new Visitor Centre will be sited, so once the next phase of building is completed visitors will be able to explore the Visitor Centre and learn about our Barney at Glenda Spooner Farm. Liam meets Liam! Belwade Farm Aboyne, Aberdeenshire. Open all year Wednesday to Sunday, from 11am to 4pm. Belwade Farm welcomed back one of their great (in both size and renown!) characters earlier in the year: World Horse Welfare Baron has finally retired from Pollok Park after many years of sterling service. Baron is enjoying life back at Belwade and is having fun hacking out with fellow Clydesdale Digger. As you can see, the two also like to relax in the field together (picture right). The renowned café in the Visitor Centre continues to go from strength to strength and now holds "steak and seafood" nights on the first Friday of each month, which are proving very popular. If you would like to go along to a "steak and seafood" night, please phone to book your space or find out more. At the time of going to print, Belwade Farm were preparing for their annual charity clay shoot on Sunday 21st September this year. The clay shoot is a fun day out for people of ages and is a great fundraising event, which grows each year. The clay shoot offers a range of classes, a raffle and a barbecue on the day, plus cash prizes for the winners. Keep an eye on our website to find out more about other upcoming events at Belwade Farm in the run-up to Christmas. Hall Farm Snetterton, Norfolk. Find our farm on Facebook! Open all year on Wednesdays, weekends and Bank Holidays, from 10am to 4pm. Hall Farm's Summer Extravaganza Fundraising Fun Day on 10th August had the misfortune to coincide with the arrival of Hurricane Bertha and yet it still managed to be a triumph over adversity, with plenty of Dunkirk spirit in evidence, which was very fitting given the wartime theme of the day. Despite the extreme weather, an impressive number of stalwart spectators turned out to come and support the day and we were hugely grateful to them for doing so. Though a number of the main arena acts unfortunately had to be cancelled in the interests of safety, the Hall Farm grooms were still able to put on their own very special show, which was extremely popular with the audience. The display featured a number of Hall Farm's horses and ponies ranging from those currently undergoing rehabilitation to those ready to find new homes. The team drew some very clever and poignant parallels with recognised organisations and groups from the wartime comparing the youngsters at Hall Farm to the evacuees during the war and members of the farm team to the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. There was even a World Horse Welfare equivalent of the Home Guard a sight not to be missed! The tombola and tack stall were both very popular on the day, with showgoers able to grab themselves some great bargains from the tack stall. Upcoming events at Hall Farm include a Tim Stockdale lecture demo on the 5th November contact Maxine for more details and to book your place by ing maxinelangley@ worldhorsewelfare.org or call Hall Farm's Christmas carol service will be held on Monday 8th December. Find our farm on Facebook! Baron and Digger enjoying a rest in the field together The Hall Farm team put on a great display, exhibiting true war-time spirit to ensure that the show did go on despite the terrible weather World Horse Welfare Yogi (lead) taking part in the scurry driving FARMS

FUNDRAISING Polo Day is a resounding success Kauto Star wows supporters at Guards Polo Club World Horse Welfare supporters gathered at Guards Polo Club in Windsor in early July to create a day to remember. Guests were lucky enough to meet dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kauto Star, now retrained in dressage with Laura Collett and appearing at our special fundraising event by kind permission of owner Clive Smith. Kauto looked magnificent and enjoyed the attention of our supporters as Clive explained to guests how his champion has made his sporting transition. Horse and Country TV s Jenny Rudall interviewed one of our Field Officers Emma Swadlo about the challenges and rewards of her front-line rescue work here in the UK. Following an enjoyable lunch auctioneer Russ Williams guided the bidding over some fantastic auction lots, which included a private box at Olympia, a luxury holiday to attend the Dubai World Cup and chances to join the charity s challenge ride of a lifetime in Colorado this year. The entertainment wasn t too bad on the polo pitch either, with a thrilling semi-final of the 12-goal Phoenician Cup on The Queen's Ground. The winning team, Mad Dogs, eventually went on to be overall winners of the tournament. Raffle tickets were sold by a wonderful group of volunteers and over 30,000 was raised on the day to support the charity s vital work helping horses in need. For more information on supporting the charity and our events programme, please contact Lucie Stangl by ing LucieStangl@worldhorsewelfare.org or calling We extend our sincere thanks to the many kind sponsors who supported the day and those who donated to the raffle and auction: Alltech Ltd., ARC, Ascot Flowers, Bottlegreen, Dodson & Horrell, Goodwood Racecourse, Guards Polo Club, Hatch Mansfield, Horse & Hound, HPower, Jane Holderness-Roddam, Jen Townshend, La Martina, Lingfield Park, MacIntosh Foundation, Meydan Racecourse, Mick Duff, Mulberry, Premier Printers, Sicon, Square Circle Designs, Sydney Arms Racing Club, Tamarind Collection and World Wine Agencies. Touching memories of loved ones work handin-hand with donations Although only launched at the end of May, our online Tribute Funds have already raised almost 500. Creating a Tribute Fund is free to everyone and will give you and your family and friends a special place to use however you wish sharing photographs and memories about the one you have lost, as well as remembering birthdays and anniversaries. Our own Dawn Witney fondly describes how the fund for her father has helped her and her family: "My sister and brother have both donated and left messages and we love the fact that there is now somewhere to remember Dad he wanted to be cremated and have his ashes scattered in the woods where he played as a child in Watford, Hertfordshire, and we none of us live near there now." Find out more about Tribute Funds and see examples here: tributegiving.worldhorsewelfare.org Another way to celebrate the life of a loved one is by sponsoring one of our Tribute Gifts. You can choose to sponsor one of the many beautiful trees which provide shelter for recovering horses in the paddocks at one of our four UK Rescue and Rehoming centres, a bench or a planting of bulbs or a wildflower sowing. Whether you decide to create a Tribute Fund or to sponsor one of our Tribute Gifts, your donations will pay for critical veterinary care and rehabilitation work needed by the many horses that arrive at our four Rescue and Rehoming centres in the UK. If you would like more information about sponsoring a Tribute Gift please contact Dawn Witney on or dawnwitney@worldhorsewelfare.org Leaving your horse in the hands of those who care Have you ever thought about what will happen to your horse when you re not around anymore? Somerset resident, Chrissie Jones has taken the charity s advice and made plans for her horses now by securing them a safe place to go to when she is no longer around to care for them. Chrissie stresses though, that for her to have the luxury of security, supporters need to give something back. I have decided to leave Duke and George, my two traditional cobs, to World Horse Welfare when I am no longer around. I have lots of family, but it doesn t matter how much family you have around you, if they are not horsey then they won t know how to look after equines properly or maybe they won t even want to. I want the best for my horses and knowing that they will just be going up the road to one of the charity s four Rescue and Rehoming centres, Glenda Spooner Farm, when I am gone, is very reassuring to me. Of course I often donate to the charity in my own way and will continue to do so; the safety net that World Horse Welfare has provided me with for my horses is a massive commitment on the charity s behalf. I will continue to commit to World Horse Welfare and donate all I can to the charity because the peace of mind that I have gained knowing that my horses will be left to people I trust is something that every horse owner should have." Without voluntary donations though, the charity would not be able to give horses the care that it does. Leaving a gift in a Will, whether it is cash or commodities, is a way to help horses even when you are not here anymore. For more information about leaving your horse in the hands of those who care please contact: Dawn on or dawnwitney@worldhorsewelfare.org FUNDRAISING

Supporters in action Thank you! Our supporters not only provide the kind donations that allow us to continue our work, you also inspire us! Here are just a few photos sorry we're not able to feature you all. We love to hear about your fundraising efforts, innovative ways you are spreading the word about our campaigns, or how you are getting on with your rehomed World Horse Welfare horse or pony. Send your fundraising news to jenniefewell@worldhorsewelfare.org and your horse updates to rehoming@worldhorsewelfare.org Please remember to send your photo in as large a format as possible, as many files are simpy too small to feature here thank you! Julie Evans (second left) with Jade Booton, Field Officer Jeff Herrington and his wife Mary at the Hoof It Ball at Tregenna Castle Hotel. Julie raised 400 from this event, now in its fifth year. Wimbledon Village Stables had a great time at their quiz night, raising 400. Jan Bradshaw and her horse Lottie undertook a pilgrimage from Norfolk to Cornwall and so far have raised 462. The picture shows our Field Officer Jeff Herrington meeting them in Devon. A fashion show organised by our Scottish Committees raised 890. Sue Cross and John Atherton took part in the British 10k London Run, raising almost 600. Challenge Rides Photo courtesy of Lesley Roberts. Duck herding was one of many fun activities at the Glasgow Vet School Rodeo raising money for seven charities, including an amazing 3,000 for World Horse Welfare. Ruby Hall raised 598 doing a one-mile sponsored swim. Evie Sheppard-Todd raised 20 doing a sponsored run with her friends. As you read this our two 2014 Challenge Rides are taking place in very different parts of the world providing radically different experiences for the participants. The unique Battlefield Centenary Tour is winding its way along part of the retreat from Mons, remembering the sacrifice and importance of the horse in this most important WW1 commemorative year, visiting sites of notable cavalry actions, poignant cemeteries and museums along the route. Over in Colorado, in the heart of the USA, our other intrepid group are learning to be cowboys on a real working ranch, herding cattle, mending fences, and riding the range all after they have done their early morning chores! We are immensely grateful to all our Challenge Riders, who between them will not only carry the World Horse Welfare flag but will also raise many thousands of pounds through their amazing efforts. In 2015 we will be off to the Moolmanshoek Valley in South Africa riding FEI endurance Arabs through herds of indigenous game, up high into the mountains and across the rolling veldt of this beautiful part of the world. To find out more about this trip take a look at for up to date information, or please contact Fran on e: francesplume@worldhorsewelfare.org. SUPPORTERS Helen Cowie and friends raised 100 at their Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Students from the North Highland College raised 387 at their puissance and jumping derby day event. Finally, a big thank you to all our wonderful runners who have taken part in the Virgin Money London Marathon, the British London 10K Run and the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon in If riding is not your thing but you feel inspired to take on a running challenge in 2015, we have spaces in these events and would love to welcome you along as one of our team members.
