All About Lynxes Solitary and stealthy, lynxes are agile and skilled hunters. Lynxes have beautiful thick fur and can be found in the northern forests of North America, Europe, and Asia. Lynxes can be identified by the black tufts of fur on their ears, their short tails, and their long legs. Did You Know? Like housecats, lynxes make a lot of sounds: mews, yowls, spits, and hisses. They can even purr! Lynxes have large, furry paws that help give them traction and act like natural snowshoes! Facts & Figures There are four lynx species found throughout the world. Lynxes tails only grow to about 4-8 inches in length. Scientists estimate that less than 300 Iberian lynxes remain in the wild. 3 4

Distribution and range Lynxes live in remote forests of the Northern Hemisphere. EURASIAN LYNX Eurasian lynxes live from Scandinavia to eastern Russia. CANADA LYNX Canada lynxes live throughout Canada in habitats where snowshoe hare live. BOBCAT Bobcats can be found in most areas in the United States. IBERIAN LYNX This endangered lynx species can only be found in Spain. 5 6

Habitat and Diet Lynxes are solitary cats, which means they mostly live on their own. They call the northern forests of North America, Europe, and Asia home, and some even live in scrubland and deserts! Lynxes are stalk-and-ambush hunters. Their main food sources are rabbits and hares, but they also hunt pigs, deer, beavers, rodents, and birds. DISCOVERY BADGE Forest Felines Lynxes live in forests of all kinds. Imagine what it would be like to live in a forest and draw a picture of your forest home. 7 8

Anatomy From the black tufts of fur at the end of their ears to their short, bobbed tails, lynxes have lots of physical traits that make them easily identifiable. Many lynxes live in snowy areas, and their long legs and wide paws help them maneuver through their habitat. Lynxes also have amazing eyesight, and their name is even thought to have come from a Greek word that means bright. TUFTED EARS BRIGHT EYES BOBBED TAIL DISCOVERY BADGE Awesome Abilities Lynxes have many abilities that make them amazing. Make a list of things you are good at and make a goal to learn a new skill. 9 LONG LEGS (bg ASSETS) 10

Experiment Lynxes have excellent hearing, and the tufts on their ears help enhance their hearing to help them hunt! Questions to Ask 1. What did you notice about the sound as you tapped the hanger? 2. How did the sound change once you put your fingers in your ears? 3. Do you think the string acts like lynxes tufts of fur?
