2008 In Review Well, 2008 was our first full season at our exciting new hunting concession in the beautiful Telegraph Creek area of British Columbia.

When we were researching the area, we were told by numerous people that it was a great area for producing top quality trophies. Well they certainly were right!

2 2008 In Review Well, 2008 was our first full season at our exciting new hunting concession in the beautiful Telegraph Creek area of British Columbia. I can honestly say that for everyone involved, we were very impressed and excited about how the season went. When we were researching the area, we were told by numerous people that it was a great area for producing top quality trophies. Well they certainly were right! Record book grizzly, mountain goats and moose were taken. The sheep hunting was exceptional and the caribou hunting was far better than anywhere we have ever hunted in the past. It is truly an area that will produce better than average trophyquality animals for all species available. As great a hunting season as it was, it was not without its challenges. Given the fact it was our first year in a new area and that we did not have any guides or crew that had worked in the area before, I feel we did remarkably well. What saved the day was the experienced, top-notch crew that we did have. Most of our staff has been with us for many years now. It was kind of a daunting challenge, but our capable guys rose to the occasion, stepped up to the plate and in my opinion hit a home run. One can only get really excited thinking of what can be done once we really learn the area and start to tap its awesome potential. So for the serious trophy hunter seeking a record book animal, or a hunter wanting a good mixed bag hunt with possible opportunities at better than average trophies, this area must be given serious consideration. Along with our 35 years experience in the guiding and outfitting industry, an awesome crew that is second to none, plus a phenomenal trophy-producing area, we can safely say your chances of success are an almost certainty. We welcome you to join us exploring approximately 7,000 square miles of largely untouched pristine wilderness. Yes, we had a great season, but we feel it can only get better. Come and let the beauty of this wild land leave footprints on your heart. God Bless, Greg & Fay Williams Spring Bear Hunts Our season began in early May with a spring grizzly bear hunt. Gerry Raker from Michigan was back, this time looking for one of those monster salmon-eating bears that the area is noted for. We traveled over 100 miles down the Stikine in our new 20-foot river boat, stopping to scout sandbars for tracks, exploring its various tributaries and camping along the way. Things were slow for the first few days, only spotting a couple of black bears so we moved camp thirty miles to try a different drainage. This proved to be a good move. One evening while out checking a dry creek bed for tracks, we rounded a corner onto a beaver pond and about 125 yards away a grizzly bear was lying on the bank. We were contemplating his size when another large grizzly appeared! The two bears stood nose to nose growling and hissing and then the intruding bear disappeared into the alders as quickly as it had appeared. By now we had decided that this bear had a massive head and that it was the bear that we wanted. Although he turned out to be an old, skinny bear, his coat was beautiful, prime and thick. His skull green scored at 25 placing him fairly high in the Boone and Crockett Record Book. Now we had some time to spend fishing which proved to be equally successful. Later in May another repeat hunter, Bob Oates, also from Michigan, came looking for a black bear. Bob, Greg, and Dustin Peacock, our head sheep guide, flew into an area where we had seen numerous trophy quality black bear the previous spring. This year, however, the bear seemed to be less visible. Then, while stirring up supper late one evening, we watched a good-sized black bear about a mile away. He was wandering toward us with his nose in the air following the scent of our good cooking. When he was within about 500 yards from camp, Dustin and Bob put a short stalk on him, putting to an end his thoughts of raiding our delicious evening meal. As with the grizzly, this bear also had a great hide and was a very good trophy. We are thankful for a successful spring bear season and glad that we had the opportunity to explore some remote areas of our new hunting territory. Sheep Hunts Sheep season began on August 1st with Bob Foulkrod and his film crew returning for a third time.

On day one, Dustin Peacock, our head guide, was able to put Bob onto a group of rams.

A few days later, after moving camp, he also took a 91/2 billy goat.

On our second sheep hunt beginning the middle of August, we had two hunters join us for their own mountain top experiences: Wayne Pressgrove, a

It was a bit of a disappointing year for our sheep guides: only three days of sheep hunting for three beautiful sheep!

3 Sheep Hunts Sheep season began on August 1st with Bob Foulkrod and his film crew returning for a third time. Bob had a score to settle with a stone ram that had eluded him in On day one, Dustin Peacock, our head guide, was able to put Bob onto a group of rams. Bob was able to redeem himself, making a great shot to harvest a beautiful 37, ten-year-old ram, capturing all the action on film. A few days later, after moving camp, he also took a 91/2 billy goat. His camera crew was able to capture this on film as well, making the whole hunt a great success for everyone. On our second sheep hunt beginning the middle of August, we had two hunters join us for their own mountain top experiences: Wayne Pressgrove, a repeat hunter from Alabama, and Frank Stathos from California, on his first hunt with us. Frank headed out with Dustin and wrangler Lane Giesbrecht. Wayne, with our son Blake as guide and Dustin Goertz wrangling, departed in another direction. Both hunters harvested their sheep the first day they hunted. It was a bit of a disappointing year for our sheep guides: only three days of sheep hunting for three beautiful sheep! Maybe they ll get a chance to harvest some of the superior rams they kept spotting throughout the year.both Frank Stathos and Wayne Pressgrove followed up their successful sheep hunt by taking a couple of exceptional billy goats. So all in all, the 2008 sheep hunts were not only great successes, but a lot of fun for all. We are grateful to Dustin Peacock, Blake Williams, Lane Giesbrecht, and Dustin Goertz for their hard work and professional ability to ensure not only the hunter s safety and success, but also their overall enjoyment of the whole experience! 4 Antlered Game & Goat Hunts Early August began with guide outfitter Abe Dougan from southern B.C. bringing a couple of clients. Tim Metcalf of Louisiana and Bob Schermer from Missouri came to hunt goats with us here at Golden Bear Outfitting. They were dropped off at a high lake by floatplane and began their backpack hunt from there. Very early into the hunt, they encountered a bachelor group of nine billies. A successful stalk was planned and implemented. Bob, hunting with a rifle, shot first, harvesting an eleven inch billy goat that officially measured 53 6/8 Boone and Crocket inches! Meanwhile Tim, an archer, was already in absolutely the right position at the right time, ably taking a billy that has been officially recognized as the NEW number one goat for the Pope and Young record book, scoring 54 2/8 inches, a full 1 2/8 inches larger than the previous record!!! What an awesome way to begin our first official season in our new area. Our next group was repeat hunters Wayne Marcho and son-in-law Luke Bergey from Pennsylvania, together with two of their friends Brian Priest and Denny Showalter. Goats were first on their list and all four had positive results with trophy goats. Wayne also harvested a really old bull moose. Brian took his goat early in his hunt so, being an avid fisherman, he spent the remainder of his time fishing at our incredibly beautiful Tatsamenie Lake camp. He reports catching plentiful Lake Trout, Rainbows, and the occasional Salmon. Each one of this Pennsylvania group had such a great time and were very impressed with the new area. Due to last minute cancellations, the second hunt was a bit quieter. Mike Simeone from New Jersey came looking for a moose and a goat, while Tony Potis of Pennsylvania arrived a few days later after a large grizzly. After four days of high country, leaving a lucky billy behind, Mike decided to change pace to chase a moose. Greg flew Mike to a high lake that looked like it had great possibilities. Despite numerous cows and smaller bulls, those amazing big guys managed to keep themselves hidden until the next hunt. Consequently, Mike will be dreaming of majestic moose antlers until 2010 when he plans to return for more fun and maybe just a bit of revenge. Meanwhile Tony Potis was busy chasing grizzly with head guide Dustin Peacock. Although they didn t quite find the bruin Bob Schermer 53 6/8 B & C Record Book Goat Tim Metcalf 54 2/8 P & Y New World Record Goat Tony was looking for, they were able to observe several. Tony was very excited to get great, heart-pumping video footage of a seven-foot boar who was fishing for salmon only 25 yards away from them! What a way to get charged up to complete his quest in 2009!

The four musketeer Vollers Group consisted of Tom and Rob Vollers, Mike Leondi and Tom Gesuale all of New Jersey.

Although they worked hard, it was such a great time of retreat, rest, and relaxation. They flew for home with discussions in the air of when they would return.

It doesn t matter how big or small, Bullwinkle would be fine. As luck would have it a can t pass it up caribou presented itself to Mary early in the hunt.

5 Antlered Game & Goat Hunts The third hunt kept us hopping with six hunt-hungry gents. Joseph Tanner Jr. with his son, eighteen-year-old Joseph III, from New Mexico came looking for mountain goat and a moose. What a special memory for the Tanners when, with Blake W. and Lane G., they were able to harvest two billies side-byside on the mountain. The celebrating continued when Joseph III took a beautiful near record book moose! Joseph II and Joseph III will never forget the great time they had together with Golden Bear Outfitting in 2008! I think I heard something about Joseph I needing a hunt, too? The four musketeer Vollers Group consisted of Tom and Rob Vollers, Mike Leondi and Tom Gesuale all of New Jersey. While totally enjoying the experience of horseback out-camp hunting, they each harvested great Canadian moose trophies. Tom Vollers also collected a dandy Mountain Caribou. Our final hunt of the season saw Mary Clarke, with her husband Mike, from Colorado on the quest of Mary s long time dream to harvest a Canadian moose. It doesn t matter how big or small, Bullwinkle would be fine. As luck would have it a can t pass it up caribou presented itself to Mary early in the hunt. Guide Dustin had to talk her into taking the caribou - she was so focused on that moose. She was glad she did in the end, because Mary s sharp shot took down an awesome 60 Boone and Crocket monster moose! How to bring a big smile to a great gal s face! Congratulations Mary! (watch the magazines for Mary s upcoming story.) Also on this hunt, we had the pleasure of hosting Roscoe Blaisdell of New Hampshire who was hunting for goat, caribou, and moose. Well, two out of three is not bad. Roscoe, and his guide Ian, were able to find a respectable billy goat and a mountain caribou. We re looking forward to Roscoe s return when he ll be able to fill that moose-spot in his trophy room. Joseph Tanner Jr. Moose This concluded our first season at Golden Bear Outfitting.
