Many beginning handloaders without a bullet lubricator-sizer have simply dipped the bullets in melted lubricant and then trimmed the excess with a cake-cutter, a modified cartridge case, in this instance, an 8mm case with the head cut off for the.30 caliber bullets. The bullets were then either sized with a tool such as the Lyman tong tool die or, as in the case of these Ohaus bullets casting,309, they were simply shot as cast. Transparency by Rick Jamison. I N THE LAST ISSUE we mentioned the formation of "The National Coalition to Ban Handguns," a Washington, D.C., organization which has been described as a "Gun Control Common Cause," sponsored by the United Methodist Church. Not unexpectedly, we received a flurry of letters and phone calls from church members who wanted to know if the report was correct; if so, they planned to protest to their church boards. Dr. John Corbett, Director of Church-Government Relations of the United Methodist Church is organizing the "coalition;" he functions under the Board of Church and society, one of four Methodist Church boards. His office address is 00 Maryland Avenue N.E., Washington, D.C., Dr. Corbett, with whom I had a lengthy, cordial phone conversation, said that the Board of Church and Society is, at present, one of about 25 national organizations which are members of the coalition. He said it includes "almost all the major church agencies, plus teachers' organizations, social workers' organizations, and some labor groups." The total membership represented by these organizations is "some 50 million," he said. I refrained from mentioning that by no means all of the members of those groups, certainly not all Methodists, favor a prohibition upon privately owned handguns. Dr. Corbett said that the coalition "is growing; not every day, but growing," and that the plans are to eventually secure private funding and hire a staff, but right now he is the only "staff." He readily acknowledged that his salary is paid by the United Methodist Church. The authority for his involvement comes under "a policy of the General Conference of 972," he said. At that meeting, which is held every four years, Methodist Church leaders from across the nation approved a resolution calling for the prohibition of privately owned handguns. However, Dr. Corbett said, no action had been taken upon that resolution until recently. During our conversation, which the State Department would have described as "friendly but frank," we covered most of the arguments for and against handgun prohibition - and I believe that some of my objections were points he had never considered, but I certainly doubt that I changed his mind on anything. Our closing remarks pretty well summed up the conversation: " agree, Neal, that handguns may have had a place in recreation, and possibly even self-protection, but the time has come when we must sacrifice handguns for the common good." To which I replied, "Jack, you don't have a handgun, while I do, so I'm the one that you plan to force to make the sacrifice. But in an hour's conversation you haven't presented any evidence to show that my sacrifice is going to achieve the desired result." And that's the way we left it, although in a follow-up letter I told him that just as Congress is prohibited from making any law concerning the establishment of religion, I feel it's improper for religion to attempt to make any law. Tax-exempt organizations are prohibited from lobbying, although they may inform their members of legislation, or present the members' views to Congress. But it seems to me that using tax-free church funds to form an organization outside the Methodist Church, or any other church, in order to influence legislation is possibly a violation of the tax laws and certainly an infringement of the Constitutional barriers between church and state. Yet support by various denominations is apparent in numerous organizations such as the National Coalition to Ban Handguns, including the Washington-based National Council to Control Handguns, the Chiacgo-based Committee For Handgun Control, the Los Angeles-based Coalition For Handgun Control, ad infinitum. Are your contributions supporting these groups? - Neal Knox 0 HANDLOADER Magazine
4 New Powders in the By DON ROBERTS A GUN WRITER S career isn t complete unless, at one time or another, he pens a tribute to the much-neglected 6 gauge. The normal approach is smother the reader with pattern and payload figures to prove that (A) on a pellet-count basis, the 6 can do anything the popular 20 can; and that (B) with short magnum loads, it isn t more than 5-7 yards behind the standardchambered 2 bore. As a conclusion, the writer normally argues that a 6 gauge loaded with the proper ammunition is indeed a versatile smoothbore, entirely capable of handling virtually all modern wing-gunning chores, and his final paragraph is generally a tear-jerker lamenting the 6 s apparent slide to oblivion. It s all true, but stay away from this well-covered ground. The hunter who wants to continue using his pet 6 as an all-around gun is being forced into reloading, due to the makers of commercial ammo dropping specialty items - such as the brush load - and retailers no longer stocking complete assortments of those loadings which are available. But due to the limited components which are available, the 6 gauge handloader doesn t have it nearly so easy as stuffers of the 2 and 20. The W29932 and W29934 Power Pistons are the only one-piece 6 gauge wads, although Remington has recently made a change in nomenclature. The old W29932, which has a long cushioning section and is used for light payloads in low basewad cases, is now known as the R-6; the W29934, with its shorter cushioning section and more spacious shotcup, is now designated the SP-6. The only other ways one can guard against bore scrub in the 6 is to use Federal s 6SC00 shotcup or Alcan s Kwik-Sert plastic wrapper atop filler wads. For gas seals, it s the Alcan PGS plastic disc or nitro cards of.35 or.200-inch. And in my humble opinion, it s tough to find a better filler wad than Winchester s moulded fiber objects. The 6 gauge scene is also o,ne of the few places where reloaders will need size 57 primers. Remington-Peters hulls drawn to 6-gauge persuasion still take them. The two remaining spark plugs of this diameter are Remington s 57 and the CCI 57. Both are good items, although the CCI 57 seems to be a mite more potent when one reviews comparative pressure/velocity data. Too, the fact that Remington s 57* has an open flash hole while the CCI 57 has a lacquer seal forces me to repeat an oft-mentioned warning: don t use the 57* with spherical powders, because the kernels can roll into the battery cup and create a high pressure in that confined space. This generally won t blow up anything, but it does unseat the primer cap which, in turn, can tumble out and jam the action. With sphericals in R-P 6-gauge plastics, then, CCI 57 s get the nod. Despite being neglected by both makers of commercial ammo and reloading components, however, the 6 gauge still has a loyal following - and deservedly so! It s a fine gun. Moreover, the current scene isn t all bland and bleak for those who reload 6-gauge fodder, because the new powders which have come along recently should breathe some life into this spirited performer. One of these propellants is Bruce Hodgdon s Trap-00, a relatively dense spherical with a burning rate sandwiched betwixt Red Dot on the faster side and W-W 452AA on the slower when used in the 6. In my analysis, Trap-00 seems best fitted to payloads of ounce or less, and its most efficient performance (based on a pressure/velocity ratio) comes with 7/8-ounce plinker reloads, which are a specialty item not available in commercial form. And although some might snicker at cutting a 6 gauge to 20-gauge proportions, a snappy 7/8-ouncer from the 6 is quite effective on woodcock, bobwhite, and hand-tossed clays or regulation skeet. Equally important, in these days of high lead prices an ultra-light load is a money saver when any amount of practice shooting is done! The appended load table will kt selected data for 7/8-ouncers plus heavier loads using the newer propellants, but I d like to elaborate on one such 7/8-ouncer that has given me excellent results on close-in quail with NO. 8% and The 6-gauge shotsheli, center, is capable of handling the same 4-ounce shot charge as is the 3-inch 20 gauge, left, and is the equal of the old 4-ounce payload maximum in the high-velocity loading of the standard-length 2. HANDLOADER Magazine
5 Old 6 Hodgdon s spherical Trap-I00 has a burning speed between Red Dot and 452AA. It is best suited to 7/8-ounce and I-ounce loads in the 6 gauge. 9 shot. This was rolled into W-W compression-formed hulls plugged with W-W 209 primers. The Dowder charge was 7.O/Trap-00 beneath W299i2 Power Pistons and the above-mentioned all current and component 7/8-ounce shot load. According to Hodgdon data, said shotshell does,200 combinations. fps and 0,700.u.p. in once-fired hulls But 7.0/Trap-00 and 7/8-ounce of from a 28-inch tube. If that pressure No. 8% or 9 shot held extremely snug figure sounds somewhat high to the Patterns through my 6 gauge. I did average handloader, he must remember notice that hulls fired 2-5 times threw that (A) industry standards are based on slightly tighter patterns than once-fired an,000.u.p. maximum, and (B) that cases did, but that wasn t a detriment to pressures tend to soften as cases wear my shooting on small targets at ranges of and the crimp weakens because of yards. It might suggest, however, repeated workings. Of course, such that handloaders who like to play all the ballistic deterioration isn t common to angles might roll their ultra-light fodder just this recipe ; it s a fact of life with in crisp, once-fired cases when after optimum pattern diameter from Skeet and Improved Cylinder barrels, and then utilize worn tubes for tight strings in Modified and Full choke guns. Mav-June 975 A -ounce shot charge is standard in the 6 s light game load, and Trap-00 serves here also along with a pair of other ball powders: Winchester 452AA and 473AA. As stated earlier, fast-burning Trap-00 does not offer the best pressure/velocity ratio for this payload heft, but it is serviceable. For example, 7.O/Trap-00 in the R-P Shurshot plastic case with CCI 57 primer, a W29932 Power Piston, and ounce of fine shot averages roughly,80 fps and 0,600.u.p. That s adequate speed for any upland or clay-target job, but Hodgdon pressure data hints broadly that Trap-00 can t produce velocities any higher without pushing pressures beyond maximum recommendations. Winchester s 452AA ball, which is just slightly slower burning than Trap-00, is in the same boat. It runs maximum This long-range load worked well in Roberts 6 gauge. It s composed of a Federal plastic game case, Alcan 220 primer, 34.0 grains of HS-7 spherical and a wad column consisting of two.35-inch cards and a 3/8-inch filler. The shot charge is 8 ounces of No. 4 s with grains of corn meal. pressures before topping,200 fps (see accompanying load tables). For more velocity in the 6 gauge s -ouncer, Winchester s 473AA might well be the answer. This was formerly known as AA20S, but has been modified for better ignition and cleaner burning. It is significantly slower burning than either Trap-00 or 452AA, having been developed primarily for use in the narrow-tubed 20 gauge. I got an average muzzle velocity of,233 fps from a 28-inch barrel after clocking 0 shots assembled in once-fired W-W C-F hulls with 2.5/473AA, a W29932 Piston, and W-W 209 primers under an ounce of 7% S. Winchester data, derived from once-fired hulls, lists this load at only 8,800.u.p. A venturesome handloader can easily drop another half grain into this one for added velocity and still-safe pressures. However, the pressure level is for a W-W 209 primer only, and the stronger Federal 209 could send the basic charge of 29473AA to maximum or near maximum heights. Thus, don t deviate from the basic powder charge if a primer more powerful than the W-W 209 is being substituted. (As a rule of thumb, the Federal 209 and Alcan 220 Max-Fire are the ones which may produce higher chamber pressures than the W-W 209. Most other primers are equal to or somewhat milder than the Winchester 209.) The U8-ounce payload was, for many years, the heaviest obtainable for the 6 gauge, and it was a dandy! I always had excellent luck at the patterning board with it, and most 6 s seemed to handle it very well. My uncle used to wipe my eyes with his Full-choked 6 using highvelocity loads of /8 ounces. Two powders of recent times fit the /8-ounce charge: Winchester s improved 540 and Hercules Blue Dot. Once known as 540MS. Winchester s current 3
6 batch bf 540 has dropped the MS label to indicate some changes. Like the abovementioned 473AA, 540 has been modified for easier ignition and cleaner burning. It is a relatively dense, slow-burning powder. At one time, it was thought that magnum primers were necessary for proper ignition with these propellants, but Winchester says that s not necessary since they revamped the line. Ball 540 offers experimentally bent hunters a chance to manipulate the powder charge beneath /8-ouncers through a 2 to 2%-grain range without sacrificing effective velocity or running into pressure problems. One can start with 26.0/540 in W-W compressionformed hulls using the W-W 209 primer and W29932 Power Piston for velocities of,50-,65 fps, and, sticking with those components, work up to 28.5/540 for,275-,290 fps. Chamber pressures for those respective extremes are about 8,500 and 0,300.u.p. Why would anyone want to juggle his powder charge between 26.0 and 28.5 grains of 540? One reason is pattern. By starting at 26.0/540 and working upward by /2-grain increments, a reloader learns which powder charge produces the best patterns through his pet 6. All it takes is a short afternoon at the patterning board. Another reason is to retain velocity. For as I said above, ballistics deteriorate as cases wear and crimps weaken - and 6 gauge cases are so hard to get that each has to be used as many times as possible. Thus, in old tubes, the handloader might wish to use a full , while sticking As handloaders know, the 6 gauge is not blessed by a wide variety of plastic components to help long-range patterning; sometimes the Remington Power Piston must be compressed to fit maximum and magnum loads. This can cause a cocking of the wad, which some may not like. According to Roberts, the W29934 is the best bet for 8 and ll4-ounce loads, even though some data recommends the W with, say, 27.5/540 with strong, once-fired hulls. Once a tube takes 5-6 reloads, I frankly think it can take a charge of 29.0/540/ /8 without jumping pressures above 0,500 l.u.p., although I have no lab data to prove that. I base my statement on comparative chronograph figures I have collected, those figures showing that oft-fired hulls using 29.0/540/ /8 run slightly lower than speeds from once-fired tubes hosting only 28.5/540/ /8. And since muzzle velocity is a product of pressure, the lower MV from worn cases with 29.0/540 indicates an accompanying lower pressure. Using copper-plated shot, those loads I have tested with /540 all shot extremely well with /8 ounces through Full choke 6 s, and it appears to be a good waterfowl load. ignited by the mild Remington 57* primer; thus, it is a good choice for 8- ouncers in R-P plastic hulls which, as stated above, still use 57-sized primers. Hercules Blue Dot has similar With /8 of shot and the in the l6 as does 540 and W29934 power Piston, Hercules data Hodgdon s HS-6. However, it does not make 30.0/Blue Dot a universal have the same burning speed, being recommendation for Federal, W-W, and lower than and faster than HS2 R-P plastic hulls in once-fired condition. according to pressure/velocity data. all hulls, pressures run below 0,ooO double-based (nitrocellulose and nitrogly-.u.p. by I.u.P., which is an cerin) flake-type fuel, Blue Dot is easily Power Pistons are the only -piece wads for the 6 gauge. The W29932, with its longer cushioning section, is for loads with light charges of fine shot, while the W29934, with a shorter cushioning section and bigger cup is for heavier charges of coarse pellets. The loaded shells are a W-W compression-formed tube with 27.5/540 and the W29932 Power Piston behind 8 ounces of Lubaloy No. 5 s, left, and a Federal plastic game case using 30.0 grains of Blue Dot, a W29934 Power Piston, and 8 ounces of Black 3 s. interestingly uniform performance. Velocity, in all cases, is said to be about,260 fps. Shaving the powder charge by one or two grains to manipulate pattern should still leave enough gusto for most scattergun work, especially with coarse shot like 4 s. Blue Dot is bulkier than 540, and I ve found that 30.O/BD plus a Power Piston and /8 ounces of shot make a tight fit in once-fired hulls of R-P and W-W persuasion. This demands some squeezing of the wad s cushioning section, a practice that has been known to cock the wad, especially in W-W C-F hulls which have a thickening taper toward the base. For those who hate to compress plastic -piece wads to obtain load fit, Federal hulls are the way to go. Being spacious, they host said assembly better and leave approximately 3/32 to 7/6-inch of space for an adequate 6-gauge crimp. Used with the powerful Federal 209 primer, 30.O/BD snaps off right smartly even in cold weather. Again, I like Blue Dot with copper-plated shot if I m after optimum density from a Full choke. (In passing, I might mention that the wad columns listed herein are those 32 HANDLOADER Magazine

However, I question the use of Power Piston W29932 with Since no -piece wad would fit this payloads of /8 ounces, as some sources loading technique, I went to the elderly suggest, and where this item doesn t fit nitro card/filler stack. The bedding agent, in this However, velocities with W29934 replaccase corn meal, made up the difference. ing W29932 run the same basic averages Essentially, the total charge was with virtually the same spreads. And since the two wads aren t all that different, the pressure differences appear insofar as pressure is concerned. When talking in terms of maximum loads (0,500 l.u.p.), both manuals carry virtually the same charge weights and only minor variations in nominal velocities. But to avoid being called a reckless practitioner of the art, still recommend that handloaders consult the manuals before jumping to any conclusions. The recipes listed in my load tables patterned reasonably well last summer, matching or just topping the densities of commercial /4-ouncers. However, they did nothing spectacular, and percentages of 65 percent were about maximum efficiency with black shot and No. 4 s through the Full choke. This was right in line with something I have almost always found - that short magnum loadings aren t really good performers through each and every standard-chambered shotgun. Apparently, barrels that have been reamed to pattern with the old maximum shot charges of and 8 ounces can t quite hack it with baby magnums. Indeed, it wasn t until I got creative that some long-range clusters appeared. First of all, I remembered getting better patterns from the 2 gauge when short maggies were cut from /2 ounces to 3/8 ounces. So dropped 3.0 grains of HS-7 into a compression-formed W-W hull, seated a W29934 PP, and ran in 3/6 ounces of No. 4 s. Primed by a W-W 209, this concoction averaged 73 percent for five patterns, which is somewhat better efficiency than percent with the bulkier /4-ouncers - and the 3/6-ounce load actually puts more pellets in the pattern. Then I worked up another cutie, basing it on the bedded pellets concept. I merely wanted to see what the old 6 May-June 975 comprised of /8 ounces of black lead 4 s and grains of corn meal for a nominal M-ounce package. Case jumped the charge to 34.O/HS-7. This gave a velocity of roughly,200 fps over my chronograph, and pressure signs seemed no different than those shot without the corn meal bedding. But patterns were something else! Individual clusters ran 80-8 percent on some sheets, while nothing tallied below 73.5 percent. The average over 5 shots at 40 yards was 78.3 percent, and every sheet showed a very high center density apropos to long-range wing-gunning. Thus the /8-ounce load was printing more pellets in the 30-inch circle than either of the heavier shot charges. The scene isn t altogether bleak for fanciers of the versatile 6 bore. By handloading, a man can keep his pet 6 popping with specialized loads for every hunting and shooting job, and the recently introduced and/or improved powders aren t going to hurt things one bit. Indeed, they may help keep the sweet sixteen going for many years to come! 0 6-Gauge Short Magnum Data Shot, Pressure Ounces Primer PowderlCharge Wad Column [Velocity] Federal plastic 4 W-W HS-6.35 card + 0,000.u.p. game 2 filler (,75 fps) Federal plastic I4 W-W IHS-7 W29934 PP 0,400.u.p. game (,269 fps) Remington SP 4 CCI HS-7 W29934 PP 0,500 t.u.p.
