How to become a karate Master. Or even Grand Master. Well, the legitimate way is to study, heart and soul, for many, many (at least 40-50) years and receive the accolade from other acknowledged long-term experts in Karate. Not counting, however, those from your own group, Ryu or organization. Indeed such people do exist; not many, and certainly not those with Master written in red or gold lettering on their belt! Still, this is the 21 st Century, so let s see how we can go about attaining this illustrious rank these days. First of all, you do need a little basic skill or knowledge. Not too much, just enough to impress those whom you are about to fleece - whoops, sorry, I mean teach. Just learn a few basic moves and some Japanese terminology, and you re good to go. Remember the old adage: There s one born every minute and fortify your determination with the knowledge that: Bullshit baffles brains! Having mastered these essential concepts, by far the easiest way to achieve your desired status is to search the web, books and magazines that feature articles by those Masters you wish to emulate. You will easily find them, simply search for the most outrageous and ludicrous claims such as: Destroy your enemies without physically touching them! - Learn the mysteries of the ancients warriors and master the Touch of Death! You get the idea. But by all means eschew any site or program that insists upon years of physically hard, repetitive and demanding training! Capitalize on what these world leaders have proven time and time again, that there s no shortage of wouldbees and wannabees who are more than eager to set aside their critical faculties and considered judgment in favor of reliance on smoke and Why Kissaki-kai? 2 Volume 13 issue 8 Page 2 mirrors; who will be driven by unreasoned faith rather than evidence and belief instead of reason. At this stage, you will have to do a little gentle reading about that mysterious force which will become the mainstay of your claims to masterhood. Yes Ki or Chi. Just learn that everything you teach as a master will be beyond any refutation, because this force by its nature invisible, undetectable, un-measurable, unrecordable, insubstantial (you get the point) is also impossible to be proven nonexistent! So you can t lose! Wonderful. Whatever claims you make are at one level (and here I suggest you learn a few phrases like: Planes of existence At quantum level Life force... Meridians Destructive cycle The Destructive Cycle etc. ) simply undeniable because no-one can easily prove a negative; especially one which is invisible, undetectable, un-measurable and so on. Now, if you don t want to wait while you build up your own reputation and why should you? Just contact one of these inestimable charlatans (sorry Gentlemen ) and offer to arrange a seminar for them. This works even better if you can arrange a visit by someone based in another country! Why? I hear you ask. What will this benefit me? Well, without a doubt, especially if the seminar you arrange is successful and the visiting Grand Master makes a fist-full of dollars and in the process gets photos and write-ups in the local press and martial arts magazines, it won t be long before you are being asked to consider joining whichever group of which this person is the titular head. What is more even though you know absolutely nothing about this particular style, and even though you have never met this person more than, at most, on a handful of occasions, he will certainly, with his advanced knowledge, have formed the opinion that you need an immediate upgrading in rank! Even if he s never met you before, he will mysteriously know enough about you to elevate you to a rank far beyond that which could be achieved by mere mortals in regular training. Now you are almost there. All that is left for you to do is to buy a gi jacket any color but white, and cover it with patches! Yes it is a given that the more patches you have, the more expert you must be! Get a big one all across the back and you are there! The final step is to learn a few easy physical knock-outs don t worry, you won t have to fight anyone - they will stand still and let you hit them! Now in order to sound mystical and be the possessor of arcane knowledge, just learn to recite a simple mantra: Fire melts metal, metal cuts wood, woods breaks up earth, earth soaks up water, and water puts out fire! It doesn t mean anything, this Destructive Cycle (a great phrase to remember) was never even heard of in the original martial arts, and is a modern construction. But! It sounds impressive! Finally, learn how to rush into seemingly urgent activity at the slightest sign that your unobstructed, undefended blow might have dizzied the unfortunate recipient. Jump forward and cross his legs (don t worry if he has a leg or hip injury or is otherwise unable to achieve this position for any reason) because this is a magical recovery position completely unknown to science or medicine, who would - boringly insist upon basically lying him down and leaving him alone to recover. Add a few extras for dramatic effect slap him on the back of the neck, pull on the ends of his fingers it will all look so impressive to those acolytes who so want to believe.. Oh yes Do have a few excuses readily to hand if anyone calls your bluff as to why this particular technique just didn t work. It s not your fault, he just didn t believe! Or: Perhaps his big toe was pointing upward. Or again: He probably had his tongue touching the roof of his mouth! Or you can quote any of the well-known antidotes to vampire bites Oh sorry to no-touch knock-outs. Now the final touch, and this is excellent and easy because you will not be alone in your desire to be recognized as a Master. What you do is set up a Grand Master s Convention, hire a good restaurant and sell tickets to an annual dinner (charge a good fee) and give out awards for Master Grand Master and Master of the known Universe (for increasing amounts, naturally) and send photos and a write-up to local newspapers, martial arts magazines, and the Facebook! OK You re there. That s it! The rest relies upon just how much BS you are prepared to shovel. The world of those who need to believe is yours go forth. Vince Morris

3 Page 3 Eastbourne Seminar Feedback I had always been intrigued by Vince Morris' approach to karate and self defence, having seen him feature in a Tekki Shodan video in the early 1990s. Having been back training in 'traditional karate' for 18 months after a lengthy absence, I jumped at the chance to train with Vince when I heard he was making a fleeting visit to the UK. I approached the seminars with some trepidation but I need not have worried. Vince was amazingly supportive and eager to impart his wisdom on effective kata bunkai. And what an eye-opener it was. The man is a treasure trove of information which he dispenses with good humour. The kata come to life as Vince reveals the depth of technique hidden with them. The man's enthusiasm is contagious. Slacking is not an option and Vince keeps everyone up to the mark when energy levels dip. Trust me, his eyes are everywhere. Vince, ably assisted by senior instructor Don Came, frequently came to my aid during the intensive, and occasionally painful, four hour workout. Not used to this 'close up and personal' form of karate, I certainly struggled. But there were some exhilarating moments when I thought 'Yes, I could make that work for me." Newcomers will be astonished by this 'stripped down' karate. There is little ceremony and not a ritual gedan-barai downward block in sight in Kissaki-Kai Karate-Do. But the karate is brutally effective and harks back to its origins when it was practised behind closed doors in Okinawa. A thoroughly satisfying experience, I would recommend Vince Morris's karate to anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge and open the door to another way. ~ Anon Shotokan Black Belt.
