Recognized world-wide International Dojo 08 A short report on the seminar sensei Vince Morris gave in Wigan, UK, hosted by Steve Lowe of the Tai- No-Sen Kissaki-Kai Dojo. Of course, it was as fun as it was practical but then I expect nothing less from sensei Morris. We covered a range of similar movements from different kata, exploring how they can be applied to a variety of attacks. The theme of the seminar was looking at Kata as boxes containing tools for defense, and how un-necessary it is to collect large numbers of toolboxes, instead of learning how to properly make use of the tools each box contains! Some of the afternoon participants others. So, it was fantastic to have so many different styles and groups there and have the possibility to spread the message of practical karate. The diverse make-up of the attendees led me to reflect on the principles of Kissaki and the Rules of Combat that underpin the method. I am always thrilled and frustrated, and I use those words deliberately, when the applications for movements I've been making for decades are revealed. Frustrated because I feel that I've been wasting all that time training without a true sense of what I've been doing or, worse still, having been told needed to use them. So, frustrated but also thrilled, because I love this art, as we all do, and it's

2 Volume 13 issue 7 Page 2 energizing to have the veil pulled back and the true combative purpose of the movements revealed. Of course, there are many political, social and psychological barriers to changing teaching and practice methods. So, it's never going to be easy to make wholesale changes. But surely the change is worth it? If you're going to teach people - to take their money - you at least need to be honest with them, and yourself, and make it clear that what you teach is sport karate and that it has only a limited benefit in a non-dojo situation. Of course, if you're still reading this far, it's likely that you've already made that change or you've been lucky enough to start your martial life in a Kissaki dojo. We're lucky, all of us, to be able to train with a group of likeminded individuals. Think of that every time you put on your dogi!" Jon Sloan 3rdDan

3 Page 3 Eastbourne Seminar Feedback I had always been intrigued by Vince Morris' approach to karate and self defence, having seen him feature in a Tekki Shodan video in the early 1990s. Having been back training in 'traditional karate' for 18 months after a lengthy absence, I jumped at the chance to train with Vince when I heard he was making a fleeting visit to the UK. I approached the seminars with some trepidation but I need not have worried. Vince was amazingly supportive and eager to impart his wisdom on effective kata bunkai. And what an eye-opener it was. The man is a treasure trove of information which he dispenses with good humour. The kata come to life as Vince reveals the depth of technique hidden with them. The man's enthusiasm is contagious. Slacking is not an option and Vince keeps everyone up to the mark when energy levels dip. Trust me, his eyes are everywhere. Vince, ably assisted by senior instructor Don Came, frequently came to my aid during the intensive, and occasionally painful, four hour workout. Not used to this 'close up and personal' form of karate, I certainly struggled. But there were some exhilarating moments when I thought 'Yes, I could make that work for me." Newcomers will be astonished by this 'stripped down' karate. There is little ceremony and not a ritual gedan-barai downward block in sight in Kissaki-Kai Karate-Do. But the karate is brutally effective and harks back to its origins when it was practised behind closed doors in Okinawa. A thoroughly satisfying experience, I would recommend Vince Morris's karate to anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge and open the door to another way. ~ Anon Shotokan Black Belt. In that article sensei recounted the story of a young Kissaki-Kai shodan who had suffered terrible injuries in a car crash. His future in karate looked to be at an end, as he was confined to a wheelchair and could only stumble a few difficult steps. Now, by exercising tremendous willpower, and with the support of his family and his karate instructors, Brian and Dave (Middlesborough) Jason has made magnificent progress. He still does not have 100% mobility, but he is a shining example of what courage and tenacity can accomplish! He is a real her, and an inspiration to us all who complain of our own person trials and tribulations! It was am. The first rush of commuter traffic was over, but the taxis were still coming and going, weaving their way between the cyclists, pedestrians and kamikaze scooter drivers who had been lured out by the glorious weather. Small groups of backpacking teenage tourists huddled over street maps and a small congregation of street dwellers in the grimy little alley opposite the station taxi ranks, eased their aching joints beneath their rags, grateful for the gentle warmth. Spurning the acrid tobacco fumes of the platform waiting room, Marcello smiled fondly down at his lovely wife. How beautiful she was, he thought, her ashblonde hair tumbling and dancing in the warm breeze as she bent over the pushchair to fussily adjust little Giorgio s brightly coloured woollen jacket. The sun beamed down, and even here on the railway station platform the air was thick with all the scents of early summer. Marcello s heart surged with joy as he looked at the chortling, gurgling infant, all wide eyes and clutching fists as the smiling face of his mother filled his universe. How could he be happier? A gorgeous wife, a fine strong baby boy, an interview for a new job, and all under balmy, Michelangelo blue skies! His spirits danced! The train stood waiting; the mail and parcels had been loaded and most of the passengers had climbed aboard and claimed their seats. Almost the last ones remaining on the platform, impulsively he pulled his startled wife fiercely to him, smelling the warmbread musky smell of all young mothers intermingled with the slightest hint of perfume, smothering her giggled protests with urgent lips. She had made a special effort, he knew, to send him off in high spirits. This job was important to him, to them, to all three of them. A last hug and a lingering embrace, then he was aboard, leaning through an open window as the chortling infant was lifted up for a final kiss. With an iron screech of wheels and a sudden lurch, the train began to pull away. It was 10.24am. Adrienne held the baby high, waving Giorgio s tiny arm in farewell. It was 10.25am. A blinding flashing fireball of an explosion ripped horrendously through the station. A shattering roar, almost incomprehensible in its intensity, battered and dazed the senses, hammering eardrums into a shocking silence. To Marcello on the train, it was as if time had ceased to flow. In a slow-motion nightmare he watched helplessly as the expanding eruption cut down his wife and baby, hurling them around in a swirling, bodysmashing maelstrom of bricks, dust and debris. The train had stopped, and time had stopped. The rictus of Marcello s tormented scream was frozen on his face. Almost before his stunned brain could even register the deaths of his family, a jagged splinter of glass punched savagely into his left eye. Not a large splinter really, no more than 10 centimetres long, but big enough to tear away the optic nerve and slice deep into the frontal portion of his brain. Death was instantaneous. Marcello never even felt it. Neither did he see the crumpled remains of the pushchair, nor his wife s broken and bloody arm, sticking up from the dusthazed debris of the fallen platform canopy that had killed her and his son in the same fatal instant. Outside the station the traffic was frozen into shocked immobility. For heartbeats the only sound to permeate the unnatural silence was the unnerving shriek of a jammed train whistle. Then, like starting a video from pause, sound and movement returned. The street came to life. The silence was now torn with the panic-stricken screams of the injured and maimed. Maps fluttered and bicycles clattered to the ground and lay forgotten; doors of abandoned cars gaped open as horrified passers-by ran to help. All except one, that is...
