2 THE GRADE SYLLABUS OF WADO-RYU KARATE Mukyu 9 th Kyu 8 th Kyu 7 th Kyu 6 th Kyu 5 th Kyu 4 th Kyu 3 rd Kyu 2 nd Kyu 1 st Kyu NOTES FOR STUDENTS ANTICIPATING A GRADING Before the grading date, be prepared: 1. All applicants for gradings must wear a clean white Gi. 2. Mon (Badge/s) must be worn on the left side of the Gi. 3. Ensure you have read and understood the Club Rules. 4. Ensure you have an up-to-date Licence. 5. Ensure you have correct grade registration prior to grading. 6. And probably most important, make sure you 'know' what you need to know for your grading. Best etiquette must be observed at all times. Ensure you pay your respects to the examiner/s in the correct way (always bowing, etc.). Always sit in the crossed legged position, during the 'rest' period between techniques, in the Shimoza area, or allocated rest area, of the Dojo. When called for any aspect of the grading, bow when entering the Dojo-floor. Before the practical aspect of the grading commences, you will be required to kneel before the Examiner/s desk. From here you will be asked to recite the Dojo-kun (Japanese & English) and remove your Obi from your waist and fold it in front of you. Upon a further command, you will retie the Obi correctly around your waist. You will then wait for further instructions. These rules are mottos, the spirit of which serious Students of the Martial Arts should try to follow if they wish to gain the maximum from their training. The rules are like our English saying "Service, not Self", "Deeds, not Words" or "Be Prepared" and exemplify an attitude and a dedication to a way of life. REISETSU O MAMORI (STICK TO THE RULES) In the Dojo, good etiquette must be observed by following the rules. SHINGI O OMANJI (A STUDENT MUST HAVE LOYALTY TO HIS INSTRUCTOR). This is the most important thing in Martial Arts. JOJITSU NI OBEREZU (TEACHERS AND STUDENTS ARE NOT ALL ONE) Outside the Dojo, you can be friendly with your SENSEI, but you must never take advantage of this friendship inside the Dojo - he is your Sensei. SHINKERUNI NI TESSEYO (BE SERIOUS IN YOUR EFFORTS) No turning up late to train, no flippancy chattering, smoking, eating, chewing gum or drinking in the Dojo. Concentrate solely on what you come to do - KARATE, and train hard in everything you do. Visitors, as well as Students, MUST respect the DOJO KUN

3 S.E.M.K.A 9 th KYU Red Belt Students must first show the Instructor that he can tie his OBI (belt) correctly, and to perform the normal starting and finishing bow, which is as follows; Commands on this grading will be given first in Japanese then in English. 12 SELF DEFENCE MODULES TRY TO INCLUDE AS MANY MODULES AS POSSIBLE DURING YOU SELF DEFENCE

13 MODULES 3 NEVER FORGET THE OBVIOUS 1. Avoid walking alone whenever possible. 2. Avoid unlit areas after dark. 3. Avoid short cuts after dark. 4. Always be aware of the immediate environment. 5. Walk facing traffic on busy streets whenever possible. 6. Be aware of potential hiding spots for attackers i.e doorways, walls, and bushes. 7. If followed by another car or pedestrian be alert. 8. Do not walk alone under medication, drunk or in an intense emotional state. 9. Avoid people and places that make you feel uneasy. 10. Yell for help if confronted (Never shout rape - shout FIRE, people love a good fire!) 11. Acquaint and assist children with safety practices. 12. Carry small loads at a time. 13. Keep personal belongings in or near your possession at all times. 14. Remember attackers are often known by the victims (80%) - Be vigilant of everyone. 15. If being mugged hand over your possessions - they are replaceable Your life is not. 16. Be alert when using automatic cash machines. Always check the front of the machine for add-ons. 17. Keep your keys in hand and ready as you approach your car or home and keep alert of being followed. 18. Do not assume that lighted areas or daytime inherently means a lesser possibility of attack. 19. Always let someone know your route home, time of arrival, destination, the people you will be with. 20. A mobile phone is a is very useful to carry at all times. 21. If you should be follow into your driveway, stay in your car with the doors locked. Sound the horn to get the attention of neighbours or to scare the other driver off. 22. Always make sure that the car is locked, and have the keys ready when returning to the car. 23. When parking at night, select a place that will be well lilt when returning to the car. 24. If a car approaches you and you feel threatened shout and run in the direction opposite to the car. 25. Be observant of things around you. If someone is following you, go to the nearest house or store. 26. If on a bus or train if you feel uneasy with other passengers MOVE if possible sit near the driver. 27. Do that wear any item that can be grab or used to control you. 28. Do not wear personal stereo earphones that will stop you hearing someone approaching you. 29. Do not go up to a car if the driver ask a Question keep a way from the car door. 30. If some one stops to talk keep a safe distance. 31. Do not take food or drink from anyone(could be drugged) 32. If you see or sense problems on your way, change route or go to the other side of the road and prepare to run or defend yourself 33. Never leave your car unlocked, even for the few minutes it may take you to return a video, buy milk and so forth. Attackers have been known to lie in wait for such an opportunity. 34. Never get into a car even if someone is pointing a knife or a handgun at you from inside. Just start to run away from the car screaming at the same time. It's much more likely that he will drive away to find an easier target than attacking or killing you. But if you get into the car, he has a much better opportunity to drive to a quiet place and start to abuse you and later maybe kill you. 35. Never pull your car over from a quiet road even if someone drives alongside your car pointing at the tyres etc. Always continue driving to a well-lit and crowded area before exiting your car. The problem might be a bluff and the driver wants you to stop at the side of the road to "help" you without a reason. DO NOT LOOK OR ACT LIKE A VICTIM

14 Top 10 Children's Personal Safety Tips 1. Never wander off alone. Always ask your parents first before going off anywhere or with anyone. 2. Always travel with a friend when going to and from school, it's a lot safer and makes the trip a lot more fun. Use main roads and avoid short cuts and isolated places. 3. Always be wary of public toilets. Children should never play near public toilets or go into them alone without a supervising older person. 4. When out and about always arrange to have a meeting place in case you get lost. 5. If anyone asks you to go with them, no matter what they promise or offer, whether you know them or not, DO NOT GO!! You must say "NO!" Only your parents can give you permission. 6. Have a secret family password that you must hear if an unexpected lift arrives or a message is sent, then you know for sure it is ok. 7. Adults who need help or directions should not approach children they should ask another adult. Always keep a safe distance so if anyone makes you feel unsafe you can walk or run quickly away. Tell your parents, a teacher, a policeman or go to a safety house or shop and explain. Ask your parents where the nearest safe places are. 8. If someone holds you and won't let you go or tries to force you to go with them then yell, scream and shout "NO! and/or Help me!" making as much NOISE as you can to attract help. Also throw your bag or whatever you can and scatter your belongings everywhere. This may distract the person holding you so you may escape. 9. Your body belongs to nobody but you. If anyone touches you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable or in a way that you think is wrong then say "No!" If you are told to keep it a secret, or offered a gift not to tell, say "No!" You must always tell, no matter what. 10. If you ever have a problem or feel unsafe, then keep talking about it, until someone helps you.
