2 SU HA RI SU HA RI is a saying in Martial Arts. It is not clear where or when it originated. q SU means to obey, observe, follow, etc. Therefore the teachings (spiritual and technical) of predecessors should be followed faithfully. ~~ HA means to 'break'. After mastering these teachings thoroughly, develop them even further. ~ Rl means to separate from, part from, etc. Create new superior things quite apart from the two previous stages 'SU' and 'HA'. ~ This doctrine is not only applicable to Martial Arts but to all arts. However, it is not possible to achieve all this in five or even ten years. You may need the inherent ability. Even then you need devoted training for many years. This may be a virtually impossible task to achieve in modern times. Finally 'SU HA RI' does not mean obeying blindly, breaking away for personal gains, or creating different things for the sake of it just to please yourself or your students. Loyalty is one of the most important aspects of Martial Arts.
3 GRADING IN WADO-RYU KARATE The promotion structure in Wado-Ryu Karate is similar to that in most other martial arts, being divided into two catagories. These are the KYU grades and the DAN grades. Kyu grades are student grades rising from the lowest 10th Kyu to 1st Kyu. These grades are denoted by various coloured belts. Dan grades, denoted by a black belt, progress from 1st Dan upwards. This structure is to assist in evaluating the ability and progress of a student. It also creates an incentive to learning. The challenge of Karate is an intense personal one. Basically it is a question of whether the student has the determination for the diligent practice required to improve. the amount of time it takes to becom e proficient varies and is largely dependent upon dedication to training. There are no shortcuts in Wado-Ryu Karate and remember your instructor cannot do it all for you. Throughout your Karate training you will meet some frustrating periods when nothing seems to go right. When this happens you must persevere, like everything in life that is worth achieving it does not come easily. Gradings are invariably nervous times and therefore they will be a test of your mental approach as well as your technical ability. 10TH KYU The studentwill be expectedto performthefollowing: 1.
