1 Merry Christmas! This time of year is so special. There really isn t any other time when nearly everyone is concentrating on having fun, on being good to one another, and even enjoying the reminiscing about all that has happened in the past year. There are always a few who would like to ruin it, so we still need to be careful with what we say, how we say it, that we don t become too selfish at this special time of giving etc. Just take a moment to appreciate what other people have done for you; what they are continually doing for you. You know, people complain that we are becoming more American, but there is one thing that the Americans have got right: they have a holiday based around Thanks Giving. If there was only one time of year when giving thanks was especially important then this is it. What have you got to be thankful for? Just clear the mind of any sarcasm that might naturally creep into the question, and take a moment to take stock: you are alive, when so many are dying in wars they did not choose, from starvation in countries that they could not help being born into, from torture because they expressed their beliefs in countries where such a thing was not allowed. You have your health yes we all have something wrong with us that we could complain about, but we are so much better off than many with horrible injuries. You have your family around you they may not be perfect, but then who is? You have friends, and those with few friends know true friends when they meet them. It is a source of great pride in the dojo that when someone asks for help there is always someone who is willing and able to help them, whether it be with their kata or with moving house, your dojo brothers and sisters are there for you. Advice in the dojo is free, you might not like it sometimes, but be assured that your seniors mean what they say from their own hard-earned experience. Over the past year there have been many events, nationally, world-wide, and in our homes, that give us cause to reflect. We grow stronger, we do what we can for those we can help, and when we make mistakes we admit to them and resolve to learn form them so that we will not make them again. Decide now, just for today, that you will not get angry with anyone. Just for today don t shout. Just for today imagine that someone else s opinion has value, and that you might not be the one who is in the right. Then, if you can, do the same tomorrow... New Students Welcome the following students who joined us during the past month. Welcome them to the group and help them the best you can. 599 Oakley James 600 Clare Potter 601 Abigail Lee 602 Mary Brock 603 Harriet Lee 604 Rebecca Ashwin 605 Daniel Callan 606 Annabel Callan 607 Jamie Callan 608 Amy Trott 609 Finn Moxon 610 Samantha Bailey 611 Ryan Mukford 612 Murray Hoggett 613 Zachary McGrath You have the whole of your training ahead of you, use it well, you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to! 2 Student of the Month The Special Lesson Sunday 18th December marks The Special Lesson, which some have come to know as The Karate Party. Now, make no mistake, you do need to bring your gi (unlike one lady who wore a velvet dress and then got caught up in the wheel-barrow races), this isn t a jelly and icecream party! However, it s not a hard basics and kumite type of lesson either. This lesson starts early and replaces the normal lessons for the day. There will be exercise, and there will be technique, and there will be some competition work, like Piggy Back Kumite, and Stop Sensei from Taking More Than 3 Steps (last year s record), and other very strange activities. and there is a price for entry. Yup, to get in you have to bring food and/or drink. So that once we have had our fun we can sit down together and eat and talk and generally just be glad that it s Christmas and we have each other as friends. We start at 1pm, and finish somewhere around 4 or 5. It s not the last lesson of the year, but it is a nice get together! Kickin Kids Korner Welcome to Kickin Kids, the mind-boggling, brain-teasing section of Kid s Zone. If you score: 9 or more, you are a Grandmaster; 7 or 8, a Master; 6, an Advanced Student; 5, an Intermediate Student; 4, a Beginner Student; 3, do 10 sit-ups; 2, do 10 push-ups; 1, do 10 sit-ups and 10 push-ups. Martial Arts CrossWord: Follow these directions. Use the clues to choose the right word that fits in the grid. Each word is worth 1 point. BONUS: Give yourself an additional one point (total 11 points) for completing the entire grid!! DOWN 1. Where many martial arts teams compete 3. Korean word for uniform 4. Korean word for training hall or school 6. Thai stick fighting 8. Martial arts can improve your level of Our instructors have submitted their suggestions, and we have awarded November s Student of the Month! We wanted to know who had performed well, learned well, improved generally and set a good example to others. This month we have selected Tegan Edwards who trains in Newton Abbot. Tegan works hard every lesson, whether asked to or not. Tegan can be found supporting just about every event that we put on, and she sets a positive role model and example for others. Well done, Tegan. Next month the instructors will pick a new Student of the Month. It could be you, if you are the one making a positive impression; so apply yourself to your art. Christmas Presents If you are dropping enough hints about Karate-type of Christmas Presents then please make sure that you leave enough time for us to get things in. Postage and delivery gets slower around Christmas. Thinking of a nice heavy-weight gi like the instructors wear? You could pay 108 for a Tokaido one or we can supply a Masters gi for 36. Karate books? The works of Master Funakoshi, master Nakayama, or even our own book on Bassai are all available. How about dvds? So far we have produced syllabus dvds for White Belt, Orange Belt, Red Belt, Yellow Belt, and Green Belt, and if we are very lucky we might have finished Purple Belt before Christmas. Something more advanced? Nijushiho/Niseishi Kata Comparison and OCI Southern Area 2003 are both available in our Seminar selection. We also have the Russell Stutely range at a new, reduced price to help with the Christmas budget. or how about kick shields, focus mitts, punch bags, etc. The list goes on and on. Down 1. 3 OCI Southern Area Convention The Attendees 2005 Each year we hold seminars together to share knowledge. A seminar isn t like a normal lesson. For one thing they are much longer. We honestly believe that you will get more than a month s worth of training from each seminar, and this one was no different. Saturday 5th November 2005 saw the beginning of a Dan grading in MAW Torquay. Sunday 6th November saw the end of the grading during a mammoth 5 hour seminar. The day began with Angela taking the warm-up, then Renshi Anthony Blades (6th Dan) took the class through Tekki Shodan and fired up the ability to perform the kata with dynamism. Kiba-dachi was introduced as a mobile platform and method of movement instead of a rigid, useless stance that most people think it is. Sensei Neil Ellison (4th dan) taught the Bagua Zhang 8 Mother Palms and made note of the historical link to Tekki and Naihanchi. His applications were based around the first simple movement of the kata, showing how the same idea can be applied inside, or outside of the attackers zone of influence. Gripping stuff! Unfortunately, Sensei Stuart Howe (4th Dan) could not be with us as he was in New Mexico, but Sensei John Burke (4th Dan) introduced the class to combative applications from Tekki, and linked them straight back to Bagua. Whilst all of this was going on Renshi and Sensei John conspired to randomly attack those who were attempting Dan grades in order to promote zanshin. Those taking the test were observed over the two days, and were privately given their awards with a de-briefing. We are very proud to announce that all the candidates impressed Renshi Blades. The grades awarded were: Angela Giesens Shodan Sam Halcro Shodan Andrew Walker Nidan James Smith Nidan Dave Floyd Sandan Mike Daniels Sandan Keikokai Yudansha Everyone should know that getting a black belt is the first step towards mastery, and the real learning begins there! Remember: The best compliment that you can pay your school and your instructor is to recommend them to a friend.

All Paignton classes are now held at Paignton Community College until a better venue can be found. When we moved from Victoria Square to Dartmouth Road we always expected to be moving on to a better site (more floor space, preferably in one open area); now, after three years, we were finally forced to admit that the building was not helping study or growth. It feels sad to be closing a full-time centre, but the building has not been conducive to good training. Please check the timetable changes, as the sessions at PCC are Tuesday and Thursday 5-6pm for Juniors and 6-8pm for Teens and Adults, and an Open Class is still available on Saturday morning from 10.30am until 12 noon. We expect students to make use of the longer lessons so that we can build a tremendous team spirit as we all train together. Totnes Times Change We ve begun our new timetable of lessons at Totnes Leisure Centre. The new lessons take place on Wednesday evenings 6-8pm and Saturday mornings 10am-12noon. This means that even our younger members should be able to train twice a week! All members should also realise that if they require more training they are welcome to attend appropriate lessons at Paignton, Newton Abbot, Torquay, or Totnes as well as their usual venue at no extra charge. Term Fees As a special offer, we would like to offer students the chance to pay for a term (4 months) or a year of tuition instead of the monthly system. This has several advantages: it shows your commitment to training (to yourself if no one else); it stops you from having to think about pay day and when to pay us; and, naturally, to make it easier for you we will apply a 10% discount to those who pay for a term and 25% to those who choose the annual option. To make the deal even more interesting, we will make any seminars or special lessons that Sensei John teaches FREE to those who take one of these options. Now, as prices have gone up over time, that means that you might not be paying the same as someone else in the dojo (the longer you have been around the less you are paying); so we will work out your price specifically for you. To find out how much your special deal is, call Kim on This offer is only open until the end of January 2006.

5 Grading The regular grading occurred on Sunday 27th November at Newton Abbot dojo. Assisting chief examiner Sensei John Burke was Sensei Mike Daniels, Sensei Dave Floyd, Sensei James Smith, Sensei Steve Bulley and Sensei Angela Giesens. The total list of successful candidates is: Joseph Trott 1st kyu Liam Trott 1st kyu Keith Croft 2nd kyu Dayle Cunningham 3rd kyu Taya Cotterill 4th kyu Lucy James 4th kyu Alice James 4th kyu Jasper James 4th kyu Kieran Hooper 5th kyu Karl Wreford 5th kyu Kenny Cheung 5th kyu Kerry Eldred 6th kyu Paul Wilson 6th kyu Natasha Cridge 7th kyu Melissa Cridge 7th kyu Nicola Gaines 7th kyu Kelvin Ho 7th kyu Vicci Hooper 7th kyu Henry May 7th kyu Conor Nettleton 7th kyu Sofie Newton 7th kyu Kyle Rusby 7th kyu Chris Stevens 7th kyu James Warren 7th kyu Cort Brailey 8th kyu Edward Thomas 8th kyu Jessica Beare 8th kyu Timmy Boyd 8th kyu Leon Rozelaar 8th kyu Callum Tucker 8th kyu Kerenza Flanery 8th kyu Hannah Russell 8th kyu Pete Millea 8th kyu Kirsty Heather 9th kyu Megan King 9th kyu Dave Marr 9th kyu Dale Tarr 9th kyu Steve Thomas 9th kyu Any students who has not graded in the last three months should be attempting to grade at the end of January. You need to work hard to make this happen. Training twice per week will clock up 26 lessons in three months. You should enjoy regular progress (and grades) if you do three months and hours of training. Check with your instructor as to what you need to work on to achieve your goals. BOOK YOUR PRIVATE LESSON EARLY and use it to get an assessment on your progress. Diary Dates Grading Examination The next grading examination should be a full one! There is no grading at the end of December, so the next one will be notified in the next newsletter for the end of January, along with all the exciting dates for 2006! This grading should feature all of you who haven t graded in the past three months or more. If you will be eligible then make sure you get enough training and advice to ensure your success! January 2006 All students who are attempting a belt promotion are expected to attend the lesson prior to the examination. SPECIAL DATES Sunday 18th December Christmas Party at Newton Abbot Dojo. Fun and games and silliness, food and drink, and our Annual Awards! Thursday 22nd December Last lesson before Christmas. Tuesday 3rd January 2006 First lesson of the New Year. The Awards The Special Lesson on Sunday 18th December sees a reward like no other! The instructors get together and judge who has had the biggest impact on their lives over the past year. Then we will award trophies in recognition of: Student of the Year Most Helpful Sempai Most Improved Student Most Dedicated Student Now, your efforts are appreciated through the year by awarding of grades etc., but these are about the whole effort, and not necessarily about how successful you have been. And remember, even if you have not been around a whole year yet, we will start making our observations for 2006 as soon as the New Year begins! Christmas Break Now, you know that with the large number of classes we offer there are very few occasions where there is no training available. However, we are just coming up on one of those times at Christmas we shut down for the period between Christmas and New Year to refresh and recharge and spend some precious time with our families. This year s break runs from to Friday 23rd December to Monday January 2nd. That means that the last lesson before Christmas will be on Thursday 22nd December and the first lesson of 2006 will be on Tuesday 3rd January. Please don t feel like you are missing out in December, you can always get extra training at other venues and times to your regular slots to make up any training deficit! As you pay for training in December as much as any other month you owe it to yourself to yourself to make sure that you get the most out of us this month!
