1 OFFICAL JUNIOR KICKS MANUAL Student: Instructor: Date: Kicks Martial Arts
2 Welcome to 4 Kicks Martial Arts 4 Kicks Martial Arts (4KMA) is an organization developed to teach martial arts to the community at an affordable cost. The goal of 4KMA is to offer classes through community education programs, recreation centers, and other community-based locations. 4 Kicks Martial Arts is associated with the All American Society of Karate, which has been teaching martial arts in Texas for more than 30 years with schools in Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston. The founder of 4KMA has been training in martial arts since Kicks Martial Arts teaches American karate, an evolving system with new ideas and fresh approaches to the art, sport, and self-defense aspects of karate. The 4KMA program is divided into Lil Kicks (ages 3-4), Junior Kicks (ages 5-12), and Adult Kicks (ages 13+), all of which focus on basic techniques, sparring, and self-defense. Many of the adults in our program are parents of children who are students in our Jr Kicks program, which makes for a wonderful bonding experience between parent and child. Classes run on a 9-12 week schedule and meet one night a week, with the opportunity for students to participate in tournaments and advance through belt tests. 4 Kicks Martial Arts also offers additional camps and seminars to keep furthering the student s education in martial arts. Tournaments, belt tests, ninja camps, and martial arts shows are some of the special optional events offered throughout the year. We have a tournament once per session (four times a year). Our tournaments are Winners Tournaments where every competitor earns an award, which helps develop self-esteem and confidence in their efforts and working towards their personal best. We ask that all parents emphasize to their child that winning is not as important as good sportsmanship and trying his or her best. We aim to teach all of our students to Leave it all on the mat, which means to give it all they have, their best personal efforts not measured by others. Tournaments are not a requirement for class participation, but are required to advance in rank. Belt Tests are also optional but, like tournaments, belt tests are required for rank advancement. Belt Tests take place towards the end of each session (usually 2 weeks after tournament). To be nominated (eligible) for belt test, the student must have the minimum class hours, tournament requirements, displayed a good attitude at home/school/karate class. Nominations for belt test, based on those prerequisites, are made by the instructor and are awarded to eligible students a week after each tournament.
3 One of the most important criteria for a nomination to belt test, is having a good attitude. At 4 Kicks Martial Arts, we strive to teach kids the importance of a good attitude in everything they do. Attitude Charts are distributed at the beginning of each session and are to be filled out by the parent. And the child is responsible for bringing it to every class to have signed by their instructor. The goal of the Attitude Chart is to form and strengthen the partnership between parent, child, and instructor and instill in the child a sense of accountability for all their choices and be rewarded for having a good attitude. In addition, 4KMA invites any student who wishes to take their training to the next level to join Team 4 Kicks. Members of Team 4 Kicks receive more specialized training in sparring, kata, and weapons. Team 4 Kicks builds comradery between classmates and provides an opportunity to compete on a higher level at outside tournaments in North Carolina and around the country. BEFORE CLASS BEGINS/ BEFORE BOW-IN: Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled class time to allow plenty of time for your child to use the restroom, tie on their belt, remove their socks and shoes, and put complete uniform on. (*Please note: your child will not receive hour credit toward their belt test if they are late to class) DURING CLASS: Younger siblings may quietly watch the class seated safely away from the training areas. While we understand parents natural desire to help their child, we do ask parents to please not come onto the training floor during class, but after class welcome any questions/concerns or tips on how to help your child practice. Please take all cell phone calls outside. For everyone s safety, students may not wear jewelry or chew gum in class. Students may not run, horseplay during (or before or after) class. So that everyone can hear the instructor, students may not talk in line during class. Students must always address instructors as Mr, Sir, Ms, Ma am, Coach as appropriate. AFTER CLASS: Students please help clean up the classroom and be sure to collect your belongings. Get your Junior Manuals and Attitude Charts and make one line with your classmates so that instructor can sign off on your attendance and attitude chart. Students must bow out when leaving the class room.and always remember to Leave It All On The Mat!
