2 Stances The heart of any movement is the stance, because your position and balance dictates your ability to perform the desired strike or kick, or to evade your opponent s actions. One of the keys to success as a Martial Artist is balance, the ability to deliver strikes or kicks in a controlled manner that minimizes your vulnerability to your opponent. The Stances required for Promotion to Purple Belt are: 1. Right foot out, Hands at elbow Position 2. Fighting Stance 3. Fighting Cat Stance 1. Right foot out, Hands at elbow Position Start in Front Position Bow (Keeping your head up and your eyes focused forward) Return to Front Position Right foot steps out into a Horse Stance as your Hands come to Elbow Position. Quickly execute Double Overhead Cross Block (Right hand on top, both hands over your head) Hands return to Elbow Position as you 2. Fighting Stance, Hands on Guard Stand in your Horse Stance, hands at Elbow Position Jump up Land with your right foot back 2 / 3 foot lengths behind your left foot (Weight is evenly distributed between both feet) Hands on Guard in front of your body Left Hand about chin height Right Hand about belt height Eyes are focused forward Jump Switch. 3. Fighting Cat Stance Stand in your Fighting Stance, Hands on Guard Draw your right foot back to about one foot length in front of your left foot Foot rests lightly, flat on the ground Weight is on your back foot Hands on Guard Eyes are focused forward Jump Switch.

3 Strikes Strikes use the hands to strike to your opponent s body. The strikes required for Purple Belt are simple to learn, but remember to ask your Instructor should you have any difficulty in understanding any of your strikes. As a beginner you will start all your Hand Strikes from the Hands at Elbow Position. This helps you to control the natural tendency to use your arms to balance your body. REMEMBER to NEVER fully extend your arms. This could lead to hyper extending your elbows. The strikes required for Promotion to Purple Belt are: 1. Reverse Hammer 2. Knife Hand 3. Chicken Wrist 4. Back Elbow 1. Reverse Hammer to the Groin Start in a Horse Stance, Hands at Elbow Position Chamber your right, closed fist up to your left ear Lower your body into a low Horse Stance as you Slide your right hand down the left side of your body Rotate your Hammer Fist to point upwards Strike with your Hammer Fist to your opponent s groin (Keep your strike centre of your body) Switch LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT. 2. Knife Hand to the Side of the Neck Start in a Horse Stance, Hands at Elbow Position Chamber your right open hand up next to your right ear (Keep your elbow held high) Circle your strike horizontally towards your opponent s neck (Keep your palm facing up as you extend your hand out) Strike with the Knife your hand between your little finger and your wrist Switch LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT. 3. Chicken Wrist to the Chin Start in a Horse Stance, Hands at Elbow Position Drop your right hand down towards your knee Bring your right hand up keep your fingers pointing down (Fold your wrist in half as much as you can) Strike with your wrist to your opponent s chin Switch LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT.

4 4. Back Elbow to the Ribs Start in a Horse Stance, Hands at Elbow Position Look over your right shoulder Chamber your right hand up to your left ear. Extend your elbow backwards towards your opponent s Ribs Be sure to bring your elbow close to your ribs Strike with the area just above your elbow joint Switch LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT. Kicks Kicks are much more powerful than punches as they usually have the full weight of the body behind them. They can be delivered from longer distances and also offer more protection for the Martial Artist while defending against an opponent. The kicks required for Promotion to Purple Belt are: 1. Reverse Crescent 2. Rising Knee 1. Reverse Crescent Kick to the Ribs Start in a Horse Stance, Hands at Elbow Position Chamber your right knee into a Crane Stance, pointing to 10:30 Extend your right foot out to the target as you circle your leg across your body (Your right leg forms an arc as you execute your kick from left to right) Strike with the side of your right foot (Keep your toes up and pointing away from your opponent s body) Re-chamber your knee into a Crane Stance on the other side of your opponent s body, pointing to 1:30 Replace your foot onto ground in it s original Horse Stance position Switch LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT. 2. Rising Knee to the Head Start in a Horse Stance, Hands at Elbow Position Circle both your arms delivering double Palm Heels to the Head Grab your opponent s Head Pull the head down as you bring your right Knee up (Strike with the muscle just above your knee) Switch LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT.
