1 History How the times change. It used to be the norm for students of Karate to all train together in a sports hall or church hall. It s how I started and if you ask any of the Black Belts who have joined us from outside (Dave, Mike, Steve x2, Richard, etc) they will tell you stories of freezing floors and running around the streets barefoot, sparring and practicing sweeps without any matting and worse. There were exercise that we used to do that are now considered dangerous to your health. The science in our exercise has increased incredibly in recent years, so that we now recognize what is good for the body and what isn t. There might be the odd mishap, but in general your training is safe. Sometimes, we older practitioners long for the old days, though. Not because we relish the thought of constant injury, but because of the spirit in the dojo at that time. We didn t whinge when our instructors said press-ups on your fingertips. We didn t complain when we sat in kibadachi for extended periods, and when the pain got so much that one of our fellows passed out form trying so hard we just looked up to them as setting a great example of stretching your limits. Now, that s not actually a good way to learn, and I wouldn't think of returning to those days and that training, because what we have in it s place is an excellent substitute. We have meaning to what we do; we have applications that work; we have the whole of our art coming together so that we realize that our kata is self defence, our basics are exercise, our sparring is a drill. We see our art holistically as something that builds us up. Nowadays there are children in the dojo; in the old days any children present just had to get on with it like anyone else. Striking someone to see if they could take a shot was usual; now it s called child abuse. But what CAN we learn from those old practices? They weren t completely useless, were they? No, everything that makes up an experience for us helps to make us stronger teaches us how to cope. What we learn form those old practices is the dojo spirit. That feeling that in class you will push yourself as far as you can. That feeling that you will conquer your self-limitations. Do that one more press-up that you want to. Keep your stance for a second more than is comfortable. Face training partners who won t take it easy on you so that you get a good lesson rather than an easy time. Our Black Belts earn their position, and are due huge respect for that. They also help out the earlier grades as much as they can. Our family oriented dojo are friendly places to be where we can have the best of all worlds. The dojo spirit hand in hand with modern teaching methodology. The message, then, is not get spoiled by having mats to train on in some places and racks of equipment. Training is training, no matter where and no matter when. We won t have you running bare foot through the streets, but we do expect you to try hard at everything you do. That s harder to keep up on the 500th time of doing Kihon kata that it is when you are first learning it. There is no room for complacency, there is none of us so excellent that we can t do better; even at the things which we already know. Show us your spirit. See you in the dojo. New Students Welcome the following students who joined us during the past month. Welcome them to the group and help them the best you can. 644 Lucy Disbury 645 Darren Millea 646 Sherridan Gliddon 647 Sacha Howes 648 Jessica Beirne 649 Hannah Gower 650 Chris Ashwin 651 Paige Smart 652 Georgia Dudley 653 Emily Dudley 654 Ryan Aggett 655 Ben Hunt 656 Joshua Gilbert-Bufton 657 Jake Williams 658 Allannah Clark 659 Lucia Ferrara & a warm welcome back to Lucy Black and Kalum Stanek. You have the whole of your training ahead of you, use it well, you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to! QUOTE OF THE MONTH You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him. - James D Miles OPENING UP A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES Volume 7 Issue 3 March 2006

2 Torquay changes. We had a major problem with our Torquay venue this month, which has led to us moving our classes to a different place. The new venue is The Fitness Suite St Cuthbert Mayne School Trumlands Road Torquay The suite has mirrors, but is a slightly odd shape with a textured floor. When no-one else is in there we get to use the huge hall! Classes are now on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Because there are less opportunities to train in Torquay we have increased the lesson time to make up for it. Juniors and teens will train in the Under 16s Open Class from pm. And Adults will train form pm. These changes started on Tuesday 21st February We trust you will make the most out of these training times and you are still welcome to train at Totnes Pavilions, Paignton venues, or the Newton Abbot site. Paignton Additions Our Paignton classes are so busy that we have added an extra lesson at Paignton Community College on Thursday evenings. This Open class will take place from 6-8pm, beginning on Thursday 23rd February. Newton Abbot Additions As reported last month, Juniors and teens at Newton Abbot have another lesson available to them. Starting on Wednesday 1st March there will be an Open class for all grades under 16 between 5.30 and 7pm at the Newton Abbot dojo! If this proves popular we will split it at a later date into age specific classes, but initially we hope that students will spread out their training a little more to make for slightly less cramped classes! The other addition is a new kind of lesson! Straight after the Open class we will be featuring a new Team class. The Team in question are those people who would like to train towards taking part in sparring competitions, kata competitions, and putting together set pieces for demonstrations at fetes etc. This class isn t for everyone. It requires a commitment above and beyond just training, as the Team will be the ones to represent the whole club! pm, Wednesday evenings. Bring a buddy day. What a great day Buddy Day was. Thanks to all those who supported the event. Hopefully you got something out of training with your friends. We re really interested to know whether you thought it was a good idea. Why not post your thoughts on the members forum. Black Belt preparation There is another Dan grading coming up on Sunday 21st May It might seem a long way off, but there is still a lot of preparation to be done for the candidates for Black Belt. You need to have your Thesis ready. The subject has finally been set: Junior members The Meaning of Karate-do ; Adult members The Essence of Keiko. Physically you have to be ready. Make sure that you know all the things you have to know, make sure that the exam itself isn t going to kill you by keeping your fitness levels high. We re going to have a Mock grading for all the brown belts on Sunday 5th March during the pm lesson, so even if you usually train somewhere else, make sure you are at that one! That s ALL brown and Black Belts. All of you. You have plenty of time to save up the fees; please remember that they have to be in a full week before the test. Seminar The recent Bo seminar was taken up only by the select few. We covered staff basics, sparring, the Shushi-nokon kata, and even modern day application. If you missed out, then I m sorry, because we don t know when the next one of these will be. There just aren t enough hours in the day to hold regular weaponry classes. Those of you who are interested in weaponry are reminded that Iaido (the Way of Drawing the Sword) is now on a Sunday before the Karate class. There is still time, just, to register for our Introduction to PP seminar. For a mind-blowing heavy duty seminar on the science of Pressure Points and how they work, you need to be at Newton Abbot dojo on Saturday 4th March 2006 at 2pm. We ll be feeding you the theory and very careful practice (you might need a note pad). The class costs 5, and you need to be a green belt or above to attend.

The back stance is 2 shoulder-widths long, but the heels are located on the same line. The centre of your weight must be loser to the back knee than the front knee. The classical ratio given is 70:30% in favour of the rear leg. The back foot is aimed at 90 degrees to the front knee. This also tells us that the back knee is at 90 degrees to the front knee. For your safety, you must ensure that the knees are aimed in the same direction as the feet. The back knee is over the toes and the front knee is capable of going over the toes without unnecessary twisting. There is often discussion over whether the hips are at Shomen or Hanmi. The answer is that they are twisted around as far as possible, as long as the knees are not twisted. Very flexible people will be able to turn their body at 90 degrees to their front foot, most will settle for a relaxed hip position in order to concentrate on the knees. We consider back-stance to be a suitable delivery system for backward/pulling power. The key here is that it is a system, not a posture. It must be related as a process rather than a frozen position. In making front stance, it is the making that is important. Common Errors. Weight central bad kiba dachi. Feet at strange angles. Knees facing different directions to the toes. Stance too short. Stance not deep enough. It is usual to see unnecessary movements added, like turning the front foot out before stepping. There is no need to bounce upwards as you step, but rather accelerate the hips in a forward direction by sinking/collapsing the front knee a little. Moving. The prime difference between stepping with a front stance and stepping with a back stance is that the knees begin facing in different directions with the latter. This leads us to concentrate less on the feet (- they must pull together and then step apart) and more on what we must do with the hips. There must be a practiced whip of the hip through the central position, so that rather than stepping we feel like we are throwing the hip in order to make the next posture in any given sequence. As the step finishes, if it is another back stance that we make then we must concentrate on throwing the front foot forward as rotate the base foot and use a momentary tension to prevent the knee form wobbling. Application. Remember that back stance is for stability in pulling. Pulling can be done in a number of directions, and just because the practice of the movement is linear that does not mean that the pull will be directly backwards. Principles. Give a little to get a little. Cover the centre, The waveform. Heavy Hand. Angle, Direction, and Intensity.
