1 WINTER 2019 Prep Cycle Welcome to the Winter 2019 Black Belt Preparation Cycle! This program is going to be an experience for you with new challenges, training opportunities and mental, as well as physical landmarks that you have yet to be faced with at Ripple Effect Martial Arts. Mr. Hunter will be the Prep Cycle Director/Coordinator for the Winter The Wade family and Ms. Schnur will be leading your Fort Collins High-Brown Belt and Conditional prep cycle groups respectively, any questions you should have over the duration of the program should be directed to them and can be sent by to We are excited to take this journey with you and we look forward to helping you achieve an even greater level of success. This season requires intense dedication on your behalf and it is critical to remember that ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING. Black Belt is more than a physical achievement. Your instructors at Ripple Effect Martial Arts expect that you begin to embody the overall attitude and embrace the character attributes that we recite in the Black Belt Creed. Ultimately, our goal is to see you become strong leaders in the community and lead your life with integrity and perseverance. Make sure that you read this entire manual so that you thoroughly understand the expectations of your Black Belt instructors and the criteria by which you will be evaluated in April. Prep Cycle is intended to prepare you for the Spring Black Belt test, improve your martial arts technique, raise your level of performance, and strengthen your Black Belt character. Participation in Prep Cycle does not guarantee your next rank; if you exhibit a poor attitude, negative behavior, or do not give your best effort throughout prep cycle, you will not test and you may be asked to leave the program. If your attitude or behavior results in early dismissal from class or training between now and the Spring Black Belt test, you will be asked to wait until the next round of prep cycle to test. If, at any time, the instructors feel that a student is not ready for the Black Belt Test, we will postpone their test date as they address the needed skills to succeed in achieving their Black Belt goals. Your instructors are ALWAYS watching you and evaluating your performance. Do not give us a reason to dismiss you. Conditional Black Belts - White you have already completed your High Brown Belt prep cycle, it is expected that you continue a rigorous training schedule until you receive your Certified Black Belt. Your prep cycle will be an abbreviated version of the High Brown Belt prep cycle and it is expected that you fulfill the requirements outlined below before the Spring Black Belt Test. The calendar of Prep Cycle practices includes which practices are required for Conditional Black Belts. Prep Cycle Entrance Exam - All High Brown Belt and Conditional Black Belts are required to attend and pass the Prep Cycle Entrance Exam. The Entrance Exam will be Saturday January 5, 2019 at 2:30pm in Johnstown. There is NO makeup Exam. Prep Cycle Training Sessions The first Prep Cycle Training Session will take place on January 12, 2019 at 2:30pm in Johnstown. Weekly trainings will be divided into Conditioning/Physical Training and Curriculum. We will once again be utilizing a curriculum log called a Ticket to the Immersion. We will explain more about this ticket at your first practice. In essence, you must have each item on the ticket signed off in order to be eligible to test in April. Your Black Belt Instructors will test you for ticket items in Prep Cycle practice.

2 The conditioning portion of the class will be difficult. Come prepared with running gear and warm weather cloths, as a portion of the training will be outdoors. Parents, you are more than welcome to join your children for the outdoor runs. You will be provided with daily exercises to do at home, details must be logged in your Prep Cycle Notebook. We will make every effort to start practice and end practice on-time, however there may be times when we must stay late or come in early to meet our training objectives. We may even have to schedule additional days of training. This will be done at the instructor's discretion and your full cooperation and support are expected. The High Brown Belts are responsible for cleaning the school at the end of practices. This tradition reinforces humility, diligence, integrity, teamwork and pride in our school. The cleaning activities will start at the end of the scheduled practice time (ex. for practices ending at 5:30pm, cleaning will start at 5:30 pm) and students will be dismissed when all cleaning has been completed. Please note that the group will become more efficient at cleaning over time. Attendance Expectations - Both High Brown Belts and Conditional Black Belts may have no more than 5 excused absences to be eligible to test in April. It is encouraged to complete more than the required training hours. Absences will be considered unexcused if a student fails to contact the prep cycle coordinators within 24 hours of practice or if they arrive more than 5 minutes late to practice. If you have more than 2 unexcused absences, you will be excused from the Black Belt Preparation Cycle and moved to the next testing cycle. Prep Cycle candidates must attend at least one belt rank class per week and SWAT at least twice a week. You must keep track of belt rank classes and SWAT classes attended during prep cycle in your Prep Cycle Notebook. Prep cycle training sessions are not intended to be a substitution for your regular classes and your leadership in the school is expected. If you do not meet these requirements, you will not be allowed to test. 15 Commitments of conscious leadership - All prep cycle students will be required to read 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership and answer the questions assigned in your notebooks. Specific sections will be assigned per week and will be discussed as a group during training sessions. Prep Cycle Notebook - All prep cycle students are required to maintain a prep cycle notebook which must be brought to every training session. At a minimum, the following information needs to be contained in the prep cycle notebook: 1. Log of Prep Cycle training sessions attended 2. Log of belt rank classes attended (dates) 3. Log of SWAT classes attended (dates, class) 4. Prep Cycle Homework (dates, times and details of homework) 5. HERO project details Black Belt Essay and Leadership Project

3 High Brown Belts are required to submit an essay describing What Black Belt Means to Me. Plan to discuss trials you have overcome in your Black Belt journey, the lessons you have learned in this process and how you intend you apply what you ve learned in the future. Essays should be typed and formatted to be 750 words. Due by the prep cycle entrance exam on Saturday January 5 th, Conditional Black Belts are required to complete a leadership project and prepare a 3-5-minute slide presentation to be presented at the Black Belt Test in April. Leadership projects should reflect the practical application of the leadership skills gained through one s training at Ripple Effect Martial Arts. Community Service projects completed within the last year are eligible but must be well-documented and show an impact in the community. Submit your project for approval by a Black Belt Instructor. Slides due by Monday April 22, HERO project - All Prep Cycle students will be required to complete a servant leader project. The purpose of the HERO project is to direct candidates during their SWAT time in the school and further develop leadership skills. Candidates will identify one student in the school that may need additional help to pass their March belt test; this student will need to be a Purple belt or higher. A student should be selected no later than February stripe week, please inform your coordinator who you will be working with. Prep Cycle students are responsible for identifying a student and approaching the students family and set up a convenient time to review and practice their belt rank curriculum. It is recommended that you approach a student in one of the classes you regularly SWAT and plan to meet with him/her before or after class. Work with HERO s done outside of regular classes must be arranged with the front desk to ensure there is adequate space on the mat/back room. Details of your HERO project (practice times, struggles and challenges, and your HERO student s progress) are to be included in your Prep Cycle Notebook. Expectations of Teamwork - One of the goals we, as a Black Belt staff have of this Preparation Cycle is that you learn to work as a team. This chain will only be as strong as its weakest link. Work hard. Do your best and plan to help each other on this journey. Your team leaders Will Ferry (Longmont) and both Chico Pennington and Rebecca Clark in (Fort Collins) were selected by the Black Belt instructors for their exceptional attitude and encouragement at the Spring Black Belt test. They will work with the Wade Family and Mr. Hunter to coordinate and delegate large projects and tasks including cleaning the school. Equipment - Plan to bring all training equipment with you to EVERY class be ready for anything. If any piece of equipment is missing, you will be counted absent. 1. Uniform: REMA t-shirt, belt and pants. Full uniform (Black Belt Club or Leadership top, pants, and belt) is required for Entrance Exam and Mid Cycle Tests. 2. Running clothes: Considering the summer weather, dress accordingly. Bring running shoes (no clogs or converse-type shoes). 3. ALL Weapons: Bo staff, Nunchakus, Kali sticks, Kamas 4.
