LESSON 1 Origin of Foot-drill and Regimentation Why do we learn Foot-drill? Why is it Important in Red Cross? Origins of Foot-Drill Foot-Drill first originated from the military. It enables a commander to move his unit from one place to another in an orderly manner and to instil discipline, obedience and precision in response to orders. Troops who are orderly display a sense of discipline and strength in contrast to troops who march in a disorderly manner. Discipline is the soul of the army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success to the weak, and esteem to all. - George Washington Today, Foot-Drill is used to inculcate discipline, esprit-de-corps and in parades. In schools, members of uniformed groups usually fall in to form a squad, and in larger numbers, contingents. During parades, Foot-Drill is a way to showcase discipline as well as drill standards. In essence, the aims of drills are as follow: To establish a form of discipline in all uniformed group members; To train uniformed group members in their reaction to a word of command, especially in times of emergency; To encourage members from the same uniformed group to think and act in the same way; To facilitate the running of a large organization when members are able to respond promptly and obediently to orders. Through the practice and execution of drills, the values of teamwork, precision and discipline are inculcated in members of the uniformed groups. 3

Paying of Compliments How do you pay compliment Assume the position of SEDIA or ATTENTION, without the banging of boots, when the senior rank comes within speaking distance. This is followed by a simple greeting like Good Morning / Afternoon / Evening, Sir / Madam. There is no need to shout. When a junior rank is about to walk pass a more senior rank, he or she will greet accordingly and continue walking. There is no need to stop. The senior rank is expected to acknowledge this greeting in return. In public places where there is no Red Cross function going on or/and when in public transport e.g. Mass Rapid Transit, Light Rapid Transit, buses, etc., the junior rank is required to greet a senior rank accordingly without the need to come to attention or salute. Greetings are to be carried out softly so as to not annoy the public. Sometimes, an acknowledgement by the nodding of heads or smiling is good enough. Saluting This compliment is given by any member of the Red Cross Youth to a Commissioned Officer or any person of distinguished position e.g. School Principal, Singapore Red Cross (SRC) Council Member, Senior Government Official, school s Parade or Ceremony Guest-of-Honour (GOH), Senior Officers from other Uniformed Groups, etc. The salute can only be executed by a junior rank when he or she is dressed in Full Red Cross Youth uniform with his or her head dress put on regardless of the Commissioned Red Cross Youth Officer s attire. The Commissioned Officer will then salute back as an acknowledgement. Only when the Commissioned Officer cut down their hand, then only can the junior rank personal cut down their salute. Asst. Youth Officer (AYO) Asst. Volunteer Officer (AVO) Youth Officer (YO) Volunteer Officer (VO) Senior Youth Officer (SYO) Senior Volunteer Officer (SVO) Asst. Divisional Officer (ADO) Divisional Officer (DO) Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) Director 4

In Groups In a classroom setting, the class NCO-in-charge will shout Class, Keep Still. The cadets, while remaining seated, will sit up straight and keep still. The NCO-in-charge will assume the ATTENTION position without banging of boots, turn to face the senior rank and greet accordingly. After the senior rank has left or given the order to carry on, the NCO-in-charge will tell the class Class, At Ease and continue with the lesson or briefing. When cadets are gathered in an informal group (especially during pre-training, training breaks or post training periods), the first cadet to notice any NCO or officer approaching should call out to the other cadets Cadets, Keep Still. The nearest cadet will extend his or her greetings accordingly on behalf of the group and salute if necessary. In a Squad In a squad, the squad commander will bring the squad to execute the SEDIA position. Thereafter, the commander will give the command, SEKUAD, DIAM. The squad commander will then turn to face the senior rank, assume the SEDIA position and greet accordingly. How to do Reporting: **Reporting** 1) The squad commander will bring the squad to execute the SEDIA position. 2) Thereafter, the commander will give the command, SEKUAD, DIAM. 3) The squad commander will then make a turn and march towards the person he/she is reporting to. 4) The Squad Commander will Halt and greet the personal. 5) Squad Commander will take a step forward and with the banging of the boots 6) Squad commander will start reporting (eg. Total Strength, present strength, absence) 7) After reporting, the squad commander will ask for any further instruction before seeking the permission to carry on. 8) Squad commander will take a step back with the banging of the boots and thank the personal. 9) Squad commander will march back to the squad and give the command SEKUAD, SENANG DIRI 10) Lastly, the squad commander will turn to the front and execute the SENANG DIRI position. 5

Other Uniformed Youth Organizations Generally, there is no need to pay compliments to senior ranks from the other uniformed groups. However, returning of compliments is basic courtesy. Discretion should be exercised with regards to paying of compliments (salutes) to very senior ranking officers, especially if they are in their respective uniforms. This would be an exhibition of our courtesy and respect. The Boys Brigade In Singapore The Girls Brigade, Singapore Singapore Girl Guides Association Saint John Ambulance Brigade, Singapore National Cadet Corps National Civil Defence Cadet Corps National Police Cadets Corps The Singapore Scout Association 6

Paying of Compliments to Flags and Anthems The following are examples of situations whereby the protocol on paying of compliments to Flags and Anthems is applicable: (1) Raising / Lowering of State Flag (2) Singing of National Anthem (3) Raising / Lowering of Red Cross Flag (4) Singing of Red Cross Song When dressed in Mufti, all members are to stand in the ATTENTION position for the duration of the anthem or song unless the order is executed by a command. When dressed in full Red Cross Youth uniform, all Commissioned Officers and contingent commanders in a parade are to salute for the duration of the anthem or song unless the order is executed by a command. The rest of the cadets and Volunteer Instructors are to keep still in ATTENTION position. All members should face the direction of the State Flag or Red Cross Flag when paying compliments. It is not required to salute to School Flags and Other Uniformed Youth Organizations Flags or Colours but proper respect must be given to them accordingly, i.e. standing at ATTENTION position and facing them as they pass by. Key Ideas Discipline is an important core value in uniformed groups. Through the use of a hierarchical structure, it facilitates the process of instilling discipline and uniformity in the group when required. Paying of compliments to a more senior ranked individual is a form of courtesy and basic respect that a junior should show. 7
