8 What we ve achieved Megavar has been involved in many interesting projects that demonstrate our extensive experience in high voltage infrastructure. Cheriton Ave Substation Commissioning and Testing, Sydney Megavar provided testing and commissioning services to the Endeavour Energy Cheriton substation in Sydney for CLM Infrastructure (Zinfra). This significant project involved having the Megavar crew certified onto the Endeavour Energy Network as well as performing the testing and commissioning activity for the site. The project was delivered without incident and to the clients satisfaction. Kingston Sub Station Megavar worked with Alstom on the Kingston Sub Station up-grade for Transend Networks. This project delivered a new 33kV control building housing Siemens Switchgear, the existing line protection panels were replaced, SCADA integration of all equipment along with two new 110/33kV ABB transformers, 2 new station services transformers, New A and B solid bus along with a new bus coupler. Five new circuit breakers and two sets of voltage transformers were installed. The entire project was undertaken under brown field conditions and short return to service timeframes were adhered to at all times. This was a construct and commission project for Megavar and the benefits of this were highlighted as all milestones were met and the synergies between our testers and fitters ensured that there were no delays during the commissioning process. Knights Rd Megavar worked with Powercor Network Services to re-build the Knights Rd substation as part of the Southern security upgrade for Transend. Multiple substations have been involved during the works. Knights Rd being a brown field site, has involved some complex staging & planning in order to keep supply up to customers due to the strict return to service requirements and short outage timeframes. The Megavar team has been successfully working in challenging conditions throughout the winter. Creek Rd Megavar was awarded the 110kV bypass cable installation at Creek Rd by Powercor. This involved the installation of temporary 800mm2 110kV cables run on cable ladder through the existing in service switchyard. The commissioning of this cable allows for the existing redundant control building to be demolished allowing for the construction of the new GIS building. Gordon Power Station Megavar are working with Hydro Tasmania to deliver part of their statewide circuit breaker replacement program. 9 A52 was removed and replaced with a new 220kV ABB unit. Megavar also managed the civil component of this work providing Hydro Tasmania with one point of contact for the project delivery. George Town 110kV Substation / Aurora Energy Tamar Valley 110kV protection upgrade Megavar was employed by Jemena asset management to conduct design, test and commissioning services for two new 110kV transline protection panels. The panels included dual protection schemes integrating with both existing generator and site protection as well as the Transend Networksowned Georgetown substation via an optical path ground wire. The upgrade ran concurrently with primary and secondary testing and commissioning works which Megavar undertook for Transend at the remote end of the line. George Town Substation T2 and T3 200MVA Auto Transformer Testing and Commissioning Megavar was employed by Transend Networks services for testing and commissioning services relating to the installation of two 200MVA 220:110kV auto transformers at the Georgetown substation. Testing included site acceptance testing and integration of all newly installed primary and secondary equipment. Concurrently Megavar was employed directly by the supplier of the new auto transformers to conduct a full suite of site acceptance tests on their behalf relating to the transformers. Derby Substation Megavar was contracted to perform testing and commissioning works for the upgrade of the Derby substation, which included a new transmission line bay and an upgrade in capacity of the 110kV/22kV power transformer. We performed primary and secondary testing for all of the new equipment and protection systems, including integration into the existing substation infrastructure and the broader transmission networks. The project was established to provide a connection point for the new 200MW wind farm development in Tasmania s far North East, for which the testing scope was extended to include a new anti-islanding scheme and runback control mechanism, incorporating coordination of measurement and control across four different substations and the central network operations centre. Megavar worked alongside technicians and engineers from several companies to ensure that the complex nature of the scheme s design was implemented correctly and successfully. The wind farm commenced generating load into the transmission network in March Burnie Substation Megavar was engaged by Zinfra to perform isolation of existing equipment, Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing and integration with existing equipment, and commissioning associated with the 110kV system upgrade at Transend Networks Burnie substation. During FAT Megavar engineers performed secondary injection testing of new protection panels proving correct application of relay settings and operating characteristics, operation of logic as well as proving internal panel wiring had been installed correctly and two discreet protection and tripping circuits existed. SAT consisted of verification of current transformers and voltage transformer against nameplate values, confirming new dead tank circuit breakers operated within manufacturer s specifications and performing high voltage withstand testing to prove the equipment was suitable to be energised from the system. Commissioning of the new apparatus included service voltage and stability checks to ensure all equipment was operating correctly. Newton Pumps Megavar worked again with Zinfra under a similar arrangement to the Burnie substation 110kV upgrade to perform FAT, SAT and commissioning of the redeveloped Transend Networks Newton substation. In addition to testing and commissioning the 110kV transmission line bay apparatus Megavar engineers also tested and commissioned a new 110kV Bus Section, a 110kV / 22kV and 110kV / 11kV power transformers. Commissioning of the new 110kV / 22kV power transformer and associated protection devices was performed under quite demanding circumstances with only a 6 hour window permitted to perform all required checks and testing as the only connection to the 22kV system was the adjacent mine site who could not be off line any longer than this time frame. Megavar engineers were able to perform all commissioning works in this time frame and restore supply to the mine without delay. BHP Billiton Macedon Megavar was subcontracted to perform configuration of protection relay settings, application of settings and secondary injection testing of 5 gas turbine protection relays, 2 diesel generator protection relays and two feeder protection relays at BHP Billiton Petroleum Macedon gas plant. The generator protection relays were Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories SEL 700G and the feeder protection relays were SEL 751A. 11 to perform all works required within the specified time frame including resolution of several setting issues between the supplied settings documents and the parameters available within the relays. Aurora Energy Tamar Valley Megavar was engaged by Aurora Energy Tamar Valley to perform routine testing of their Mitsubishi Electric 177MW combined cycle gas turbine, 89MW Mitsubishi Electric 68MW steam turbine and all associated protection relays. Testing of the generators included stator insulation resistance and polarisation index, stator winding resistance, stator dielectric loss angle and tip up, rotor insulation resistance, rotor winding resistance and rotor winding impedance. It was originally planned for Megavar to perform EL-CID testing of both generators however a change in the outage schedule restricted the rotors from being removed and so testing has been postponed until the next major outage. APM Maryvale Generator Testing Megavar engineers worked during a 12 hour outage to perform electrical testing of two generator units at the APM Maryvale site. Generator testing included stator insulation resistance and polarisation index, stator winding resistance, stator dielectric loss angle and tip up, stator partial discharge, rotor insulation resistance, rotor winding resistance, rotor Winding impedance and recurrent surge oscillography (RSO) of the rotor. Hydro Tasmania Tarraleah Unit 4 Testing Megavar was engaged by Hydro Tasmania to perform routine testing of Tarraleah power station generator number 4. Testing applied to the generator was stator insulation resistance, stator polarisation index, stator dielectric loss angle and tip up, rotor insulation resistance, rotor winding resistance, rotor winding impedance and rotor pole drop testing. Megavar engineers were able to identify a number of small issues with the generator stator and rotor, however given the age of the machine and operating environment the client decided these were not significant enough to warrant further works at the time and the generator was returned to service. Mornington Substation Megavar was sub contracted by Powercor Networks Services to construct the new substation for Transend Network Services. This site is supplied via two 110kV transmission line bays connected to an A and B bus which supply two transformer bays which supply a 33kV Siemens switchboard consisting of two incomer panels, one bus coupler panel, two metering panels and eight feeders. Primary work included marking out and installation of foundation bolts, erection of all steel structures, assembly of side by side and end to end disconnectors, installation of circuit breakers, VT s, CT s, wiring and termination of all field cabling, fabrication and installation of solid A and B bus, connection of all equipment and steel structures to the earth grid, installation of overhead conductors, lightning protection and installation of operational earthing stations. Secondary work included installation and assembly of 33kV Siemens switchgear comprising of inter-panel wiring, station service transformers, DC systems, protection panels, fibre optic cabling and termination, installation of building earthing system and connection of all equipment to this earthing system. Ringwood Terminal Station Megavar has been actively involved in managing SP Ausnet s Ringwood terminal station line protection upgrade, including GE Multilin L90 relays and the first ever field installation of SEL s new 411L relay. The project includes review and rectification of design drawings, full management of ITP s and commissioning plans as well as coordination with network management for the purpose of lodgement of applications, outages and cut-over of the existing protection to the new protection. Very much a brown-field installation, the works have all been done while the station is on-line and on-load with cut-overs scheduled to occur on weekends. Once complete the existing scheme along with the associated cables and equipment will be decommissioned. Aurora Zone Substations Partial Discharge Testing Megavar has been employed as the preferred provider for the distribution authority in Tasmania to conduct online partial discharge monitoring services. Where areas of elevated PD are noted further offline and monitoring techniques are utilized to pinpoint the cause of the discharge. BHP Billiton Temco plant has contracted Megavar to replace the 22 kv cables at the Bell Bay plant involving 1000 meter runs of cable installed on overhead gantry. JB Swift, Longford Meats Megavar changed over a transformer and relocated another as part of a high voltage upgrade at the JB Swift Longford meatworks for SJ Electrics. Megavar conducted primary tests involving highpot of all HV s, VLF of 22kV cables and primary balance tests of the transformer. Newman Power Station Unit G404 Testing and Commissioning Megavar was engaged at short notice to perform testing and commissioning of a new 65MW Rolls Royce gas turbine generator and associated 11kV bus, 11kV:415V unit transformer, 11kV:66kV generator step up Transformer and associated protection relays. With only three weeks to completely test and commission a new 11kV generator, an 11kV bus, a unit transformer, a GSUT, and all associated protection, Megavar s make it happen philosophy saw a great outcome for this contract. Copper Mines Of Tasmania Megavar was engaged by Copper Mines Of Tasmania to perform testing and auditing of the high voltage substations earthing systems located on the surface of the mine site. The sites testing and auditing included the main 11kV incoming substation, the 11kV Ball Mill substation and the 11kV Prince Lyell substation. Given the age and the history of the site and very little data with regards to the earthing system Megavar first performed testing on site and gathered as much data as possible to aid with the modelling process. Following the testing Megavar modelled the entire mine site surface substation earthing system including the interconnections between substations and also those to Transend Networks Queenstown substation and the Lake Margaret power station. Using the MALT, MALZ, RESAP and FCDIST modules of the CDEGS software package Megavar was able to determine the apparent earthing system impedances, the fall of potential, earth grid voltage rise, step and touch potentials, soil resistivity and fault current distributions for each of the CMT substations. These modelled values were then compared to the measured values to assess the condition of the earthing systems. Railton/Emu Bay upgrade Alstom Megavar was engaged by Alstom Grid to perform testing and commissioning for the 110kV upgrade of the Burnie Emu Bay and the Emu Bay Ulverstone transmission lines. The Emu Bay substation 110kV installation was completely replaced with a new three breaker scheme with two incoming 110kV transmission lines and two 110:11kV transformers. Megavar technicians performed all primary testing of new equipment, all secondary testing of new protection relays and commissioning of the installation. Megavar also installed a new SCADA system at the Emu Bay substation including the development and implementation of a new local HMI. While this was only a small project relative to many others undertaken by Megavar it was a complex arrangement due to the ring feed arrangement of Transend Networks 110kV supply in the area. ETSA Utilities Megavar is providing specialist testing and commissioning resources to ETSA Utilities as they undertake a substantial upgrade of the South Australian electricity infrastructure. Adelaide City West Project A team of Megavar testers and commissioning engineers undertook finalisation work for Alstom Grid Australia on this substantial project.
