Born out of the Motocross scene of the 1970's, GT Bicycles has a history of introducing innovative products to assist you on your journey. GT Bicycles pioneered the first Cromoly BMX frame in Throughout the 80's and early 90's landmark Freestyle, Dirt Jump and Flatland BMX frames were released. This internally geared bike is a huge leap forward in bicycle technology. Whether you are an extreme riding fiend or tech junkie the IT-1 is sure to impress. Extra Toppings: Easton EA70 MonkeyBar, Vice stem IT-1's revolutionary design eliminates the constraints presented by the typical bicycle drive train and its effects on suspension performance. The concept of using an internally mounted multi-speed transmission resulted in the freedom to locate the gear changing mechanism so as to optimise not only center of gravity but also to minimise pedal feedback. A primary benefit of the IT-1 is that the transmission mass is housed in the center of the frame allowing a reduction in the un-sprung weight of the rear wheel. Un-sprung weight is the mass on the bike that is directly connected to the wheels and swingarm and not isolated through the suspension. By decreasing this mass, it allows the suspension to respond quicker to changes in the terrain. How Does it Work? Instead of the typical rear freewheel cogs and rear derailleur, The IT-1 uses a gear changing mechanism (The Nexus hub) housed internally above the bottom bracket. The crank turns the primary drive train that is connected directly to the primary cog on the Nexus hub. Planetary cogs inside the Nexus hub facilitate the ability to select one of eight gears via the shifter mounted on the handlebars. The Nexus hub then drives a secondary cog which in turn drives the rear wheel via a secondary drive chain. Why is the IT1 revolutionary? No rear derailleur to damage, adjust or wear out. Much lower un-sprung rear wheel weight because there is no cassette (rear cogs) and rear derailleur. Much stronger rear wheel configuration, no dishing (The back wheel is symmetrical since there is no cassette). Superior pedaling performance due to the configuration of the drive chain. Instantaneous, anytime shifting with the Nexus hub function.
