Following Kimi Raikkonen s 2013 Australian GP win, Lotus floundered for the remainder of the year. Mercedes has remained coy about its advantage over the field in the wake of the biggest technical and sporting regulation changes in grand prix history. Nico Rosberg had 24.5s in his pocket crossing the finish line in Melbourne. His team-mate Lewis Hamilton had suffered a troublesome cylinder in his W05, forcing his early retirement. Mercedes were clearly the fastest cars around Albert Park with a decisive margin over the field. The Brackley squad has decisive race pace and will go into the Malaysian GP as pronounced favourites. The pre-season test form stacked up at the season opening race although Red Bull, second over the line with Daniel Ricciardo before being disqualified over a fuel flow irregularly, had turned around its alarmingly low lead-up form. Both McLaren and Williams backed up their promise with the former seeing rookie Kevin Magnussen recover from a potentially disastrous start to finish second on adjusted positions following a stunning debut. Williams has prodigious pace as seen by Valtteri Bottas screaming through the pack to ultimately earn a top five finish although he was realistically on for a podium had ROUND MALAYSIAN 02 GRAND START TIME PRIX RACE DATE: CIRCUIT LENGTH: 5.543KM CIRCUIT MARCH NAME: SEPANG CIRCUIT 28-30, 2014 RACE DISTANCE: KM NUMBER OF LAPS: 30 SCUDERIA TORO ROSSO Timing Speed Braking Sector Kmh T3 Sector CATERHAM Lateral Time 3 F1 TEAM 38.6 G-force Gear :35.1 Lap Time 32 MARUSSIA F1 TEAM 34 RECENT CHAMPIONS 37 TV TIMES Tom Howard Multimedia Journalist, Speedcafe.com COVER STORY it not been for a brush with the concrete. 5 Round 2 - Malaysian Grand Prix I Cover Story 5 Ricciardo Redemption Can Australia s new sporting hero fight back? I n a cruel twist of fate, Daniel Ricciardo s Australian Grand Prix elation turned to deflation in a matter of hours after a fuel flow infringement robbed him of a second place finish. The race will forever be tarnished with disappointment for the West Australian but in time the 24-year-old will remember the moment as his full blown arrival into Formula 1 s top tier. This weekend s battle at Sepang will provide yet further insight into Ricciardo s skills and mindset as he prepares to respond to his Melbourne disappointment and deal with new found expectations. His performance at Albert Park will no doubt have ruffled feathers around the paddock none more so than his four-time world champion team-mate Sebastian Vettel. Ricciardo has shown he is worthy of not only his place at Red Bull but his new found position at the front end of the grid. The question now is, can he maintain a position at the front and regularly contend for podiums and victories? Although visibly disappointed following the AGP disqualification, Riccardo s smiley persona has created an aura that suggests he will just take this on the chin and move on. If his performance at Albert Park was anything to go by we can expect yet more fireworks from Australia s newest sporting hero in Malaysia. Obviously we still don t have the pace of the Mercedes and we can make a lot of progress from here, he said after the AGP. I ve got to continue this now but the team has to be pleased with what they re seeing at the moment.
6 6 Round 2 - Malaysian Grand Prix I Cover Story F1 s Next Generation Ricciardo s rise to prominence appears to be the start of a changing of the guard in F1, which was further highlighted by the stunning debut of McLaren s Kevin Magnussen. The 21-year-old Dane coped with the pressures of racing in a world championship winning team with ease, as he powered to a third place finish on the road. The result was later upgraded to a second as a result of Ricciardo s disqualification. Not only did Magnussen master the tricky new 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 F1 car, he also overshadowed his illustrious 2009 world champion team-mate Jenson Button. Magnussen showcased all the hallmarks of a potential F1 superstar in Australia with his debut performance among the best the sport has witnessed. His performance in Melbourne saw him join a club of just 16 drivers who have stood on the podium on their F1 debut. The feat has only previously been achieved on four occasions since Also the last F1 debutant to begin their career at McLaren also finished on the podium at the maiden attempt and then went on to win the world championship in their second year. After such a breakout debut, expectations will begin to mount on Magnussen s shoulders. Team boss Ron Dennis has already said his new driver has the potential to win the world championship. Following such praise, it will be interesting to see how he copes when the action continues at Sepang. Podium finishers on F1 Debut Giuseppe Farina - Alfa Romeo - 1st (British Grand Prix) Alberto Ascari - Ferrari - 2nd (Monaco Grand Prix) Dorino Serafini - Ferrari - 2nd (Italian Grand Prix) Reg Parnell - Alfa Romeo - 3rd (British Grad Prix) Peter Whitehead - Privateer Ferrari - 3rd (French Grand Prix) Luigi Fagioli - Alfa Romeo - 2nd (British Grand Prix) Jean Behra - Gordini - 3rd (Swiss Grand Prix) Karl Kling - Mercedes - 2nd (French Grand Prix) Cesare Perdisa - Maserati - 3rd (Monaco Grand Prix) Masten Gregory - Scuderia Centro Sud - 3rd (Monaco Grand Prix) Giancarlo Baghetti - FISA - 1st (French Grand Prix) Reine Wisell - Lotus - 3rd (US Grand Prix) Mark Donohue - Penske - 3rd (Canadian Grand Prix) Jacques Villeneuve - Williams - 2nd (Australian Grand Prix) Lewis Hamilton - McLaren - 3rd (Australian Grand Prix) Kevin Magnussen - McLaren - 2nd (Australian Grand Prix) Magnussen is just one of a new wave of drivers emerging through the ranks. Toro Rosso s new Russian rookie Danill Kvyat could be the next star to burst onto the scene from Red Bull s burgeoning talent pool. The 19-year-old became the youngest driver to score a point in the championship s history after finishing ninth on debut at Melbourne. He also follows in the footsteps of Sebastian Vettel, who scored a point on his debut for Sauber in The decision to award the relatively inexperienced teenager a seat at Toro Rosso over Antonio Felix Da Costa appears to have been a masterstroke. But only time will tell if Kvyat can maintain his impressive start. Aided by a strong Williams, Valtteri Bottas could also become a permanent fixture at the sharp end of the grid this season, following his fifth position at Albert Park. The Finn has been on the books at the Grove-based team since 2010 where he has gained plenty of F1 mileage. With a season already under his belt, Bottas could easily be the next new face to secure a podium finish. Malaysia to turn up the heat The tropical heat of Malaysia is likely to cause teams another headache as they continue to battle with the reliability of the new 2014 F1 machines. Malaysia s unique climate of extreme humidity is set to test teams cooling systems to limit with the pace setting Mercedes team admitting changes will be made to their cars. Although the team romped to victory in Melbourne with Rosberg, reliability remains a concern after Lewis Hamilton s early mechanical retirement at Albert Park. Malaysia will be more difficult [than Melbourne], Mercedes chairman Nikki Lauda told RTL.
7 Round 2 - Malaysian Grand Prix I Cover Story 7 In Sepang actually we are starting from scratch because of the high humidity and temperature I doubt that it will be below 35 C. In such circumstances, effective cooling of the Power Unit would indeed be a problem. We will have to make changes to the car to resolve the issue. Data from the Australian Grand Prix suggests the Mercedes is approximately a second quicker than its rivals at this stage, leaving the rest of the grid with plenty of work to do. McLaren, who bagged two podiums last time out, will have updates to its MP4-29 cars for Button and Magnussen as they bid to close the gap to Mercedes. Rivals Ferrari openly admitted that despite Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen finishing in the points two weeks ago, the performance from the team was unacceptable. The F14 T has proved to be one of the more reliable cars on the grid, which could come to the fore on Sunday. Team boss Stefano Domenicali has called for a reaction in Malaysia, but it remains to be seen if his drivers have the machinery to answer the request. Meanwhile, Red Bull, who surprised everybody with their Australian GP pace, believe they are not in a position to beat Mercedes this weekend. The world champion team has struggled the most with cooling in pre-season, a problem which could easily resurface in the race. The gap is significant, said Horner. The Mercedes is definitely extremely quick and I should think they were driving to a pace (in the AGP) rather than being stretched. They ve probably got more up their sleeve so we ve got quite a lot of work to do. FLASHBACK What was encouraging is that compared to the rest of the field, we exceeded our expectations. To be racing McLarens and Ferraris and beating them, after the pre-season that we had by the 20th lap we were into new territory in terms of distance completed by the car. While Horner has written off Red Bull s chances in a straight fight with Mercedes, Williams are yet to show their hand with the team and lead driver Felipe Massa believes they can challenge. Everything is possible now and looking how we are compared to the others, I would say Mercedes is for the moment too quick compared to us, said Massa But I think maybe after Mercedes, everything is open and maybe we can be there. Malaysian Grand Prix 2012 Twelve months ago in Sepang all the talk was about team orders and that infamous Multi 21 call. Sebastian Vettel won the race but the victory was shrouded in controversy as the Red Bull team instructed the German not to pass his team-mate Mark Webber, who had held a comfortable lead and would seemingly take the win. However, Vettel ignored the order from team principal Christian Horner and subsequently passed Webber and went on to claim the victory to the dismay of his team-mate. Team orders were also in use further back in the race when a frustrated Nico Rosberg, who was clearly faster than his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton, was told to halt his charge and settle for fourth position behind the Brit. Will Sepang deliver another chapter in team orders, only time will tell...

10 10 Round 2 - Malaysian Grand Prix I Driver Insight DRIVER INSIGHT Jenson Button As Formula 1 welcomes in the new era of 1.6 litre turbocharged engines and energy recovery systems, McLaren s Jenson Button offers Speedcafe an insight into the new challenges F1 drivers face. It is a surprise to me just how different the new 2014 cars are to drive. For us when we are driving, the cars don t sound as good. It doesn t sound as good as the V8s or the V10s (but) there are quite interesting sounds going on, spinning up at stupid revs and, when you are on and off power, there are swishing noises from the turbo. Its quite interesting to drive. There is so much power at your disposal the whole time. There is soo much torque. I have never driven a racing car with torque before so it is new to most of the paddock. It is the torque that allows us to go through corners in second gear or fourth. Sometimes the higher gear works for you. It just depends on your driving style and the way you apply the throttle pedal, because whenever you put your foot on the pedal, you have torque immediately. As a result, its quite tough to feel wheel spin because you are not sure if its wheel
11 Round 2 - Malaysian Grand Prix I Driver Insight 11 spin or if the engine is going up through the revs. Its very tricky. Its less forgiving in terms of gears for corners because you have so much torque. Although with that much torque if you spin up the tyres you have overheated them. You have to be so careful all the time and you are never sure how much power you can use. Even on brand new super soft tyres you are never sure quite how far you can go on the throttle pedal. Most of the time when you were in the V8 cars on super soft tyres you could feather the throttle before planting your foot. Now you are feathering it all the way up through the gears and another issue now is you can spin the wheels in fourth gear.

Of the six main components of the PU, the ICE will be under the most pressure in Sepang. In the past, the humidity has made Sepang a little bit easier on engines since power comes down as the water content in the air increases. With a turbo engine, however, the air intake is controlled at all times regardless of ambient conditions, so those two long straights will really start to hurt. The two long straights of over 1km each give plenty of opportunity for the MGU-H to be recharged. The heavy braking points of the hairpin (Turn 15), first corner complex and the mid to low speed corners in the third sector should allow the MGU-K to recover energy to feed back into the battery. One of the hardest of the year for the Power Unit due to the long straights. The high air temperature is usually a concern as we have to choose the correct cooling level. The high chance of rain could also make the cars difficult to control due to the increased torque and lack of grip so the focus will be on good driveability without too much wheelspin.

16 16 Round 2 - Malaysian Grand Prix I Bagman and Entry List The Bagman says... Nico Rosberg s domination of the Australian Grand Prix has confirmed in no uncertain terms that Mercedes are the team to beat. Performances at Albert Park suggest the Mercedes is roughly a second a lap faster than the rest of the field on race runs. This is reflected in the odds for the Malaysian Grand Prix with both Lewis Hamilton and team-mate Rosberg firm favourites to take out the victory. In terms of speed, Mercedes has an advantage but reliability issues continue to provide a stumbling block for the team. Hamilton s early retirement from the season opener was confirmation that the W05 is far from being a championship winner. Ready to capitalise on Mercedes fragility are Williams. The team proved at Albert Park that they are next in line in terms of out right pace. Felipe Massa was unlucky to be taken out of the race at turn one two weeks ago, so expect the Brazilian to be on a charge along with his Finnish team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Arguably the biggest surprise and leap in terms of performance came from Red Bull Racing. The team had previously struggled for pace and reliability in pre-season testing, but in the hands of Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo, the RB10 has caught up with the rest of the paddock. Ricciardo showed he had the pace to hold off McLaren and Ferrari but reliability issues remain a concern as Vettel found out. Fundamentally the team have built a fast car but it will be interesting to see how long it takes for the team to unlock its potential. McLaren has made a strong start virtue of their two podium finishes in Australia and it would be hard to bet against them featuring in the mix at Sepang. In Kevin Magnussen the team appear to have unearthed a future star and alongside the experienced Jenson Button, McLaren could be a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, Ferrari were unhappy with their fourth and seventh place finishes for Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen in Australia. The Scuderia will be desperate to close the gap to the front runners in Malaysia, so expect the Prancing Horse to do everything in their power to move up the grid Formula 1 World Championship Entry List # Driver Team Chassis Engine 1 Sebastian VETTEL (DEU) Infiniti Red Bull Racing RB10 Renault 3 Daniel RICCIARDO (AUS) Infiniti Red Bull Racing RB10 Renault 44 Lewis HAMILTON (GBR) Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team W05 Mercedes 6 Nico ROSBERG (DEU) Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team W05 Mercedes 14 Fernando ALONSO (ESP) Scuderia Ferrari F14T Ferrari 7 Kimi RAIKKONEN (FIN) Scuderia Ferrari F14T Ferrari 8 Romain GROSJEAN (FRA) Lotus F1 Team E22 Renault 13 Pastor MALDONADO (VEN) Lotus F1 Team E22 Renault 22 Jenson BUTTON (GBR McLaren Mercedes MP4-29 Mercedes 20 Kevin MAGNUSSEN (DEN) McLaren Mercedes MP4-29 Mercedes 27 Nico HULKENBERG (DEU) Sahara Force India F1 Team VJM07 Mercedes 11 Sergio PEREZ (MEX) Sahara Force India F1 Team VJM07 Mercedes 99 Adrian SUTIL (DEU) Sauber F1 Team C33 Ferrari 21 Esteban GUTIERREZ (MEX) Sauber F1 Team C33 Ferrari 25 Jean-Eric VERGNE (FRA) Scuderia Toro Rosso STR9 Renault 26 Danill KVYAT (RUS) Scuderia Toro Rosso STR9 Renault 19 Felipe MASSA (BRA) Williams Martini Racing FW36 Mercedes 77 Valtteri BOTTAS (FIN) Williams Martini Racing FW36 Mercedes 17 Jules BIANCHI (FRA) Marussia F1 Team MR03 Ferrari 4 Max CHILTON (GBR) Marussia F1 Team MR03 Ferrari 9 Marcus ERICSSON (SWE) Caterham F1 Team CT05 Renault 10 Kamui KOBAYASHI (JPN) Caterham F1 Team CT05 Renault
