4 DISTRICT NEWS District 5: Jim Nikodem The big news is the schedule for It's another action-packed season for A lot of quality races in District 5. Here is what we have: Kansas City 424/426 race now on April This has been moved up a week, so check your calendar. Held in Lees Summit Missouri and very close to hotels and restaurants. The next weekend, but Friday Saturday May 5-6 (because those were the popular days last year) is the Muncie spring thaw Pylon practice. The poles will be up and there will be experienced racers on hand to help those new to racing. This event is mostly oriented to mentoring new racers, so we encourage experienced racers to help out someone new. This sanctioned practice is also open to anyone who wants to get warmed up for the season or test fly a new airplane. Feedback in the form of hard copy lap times is available. This practice was set up by Tom Melsheimer as a way to generate more interest in racing. A great idea. Thanks, Tom! Muncie Spring race May Cincinnati race June 3-4 Bloomington IL race June NATS July July15 EF1 July July July warbird Baldwin MI Aug 5-6. Put on by Scott Farnsworth last year in October. Held at the Baldwin airport, this is a great place to race with wide open spaces and a very long runway. Scott did a great job last year as his first time being CD and race organizer. Muncie Aug Bloomington IL September 9-10 Many Minnesota 426 races TBD. For dates check the NMPRA web site, under supporting clubs, check the District 5 schedule page. One day races and almost all 426 races. District 5 The Phoenix Winterfest race was well attended by District 5. Making the trip were Tim Lampe, Scott Farnsworth, Tony Seymour, Duane Hulen, Scott Causey, Tim Sparks, and Jim Nikodem. A much bigger representation than normal! Unusual weather, but a great place to race. Well worth the trip. Best of luck to everyone for a great season. Jim Nikodem 22v 4

5 DISTRICT NEWS District 6: Peter Tani Hello all, More good timing! This past weekend was the 2017 annual business meeting for the group of us who race here out of the Northeast in district 6 in Connecticut. Many, many thank you s to all who quietly toil behind the scenes to retain this meeting venue in Avon CT that is fairly centrally located for our local membership. Many thank you s to all who were able to attend including several past racers and race officials that still have great passion and took the time to stay in touch and meet with us. It was good to see you all again. It is during this meeting that any required or desired additions and modifications to our racing procedures and/or racing rules brought by the AMA are discussed and formalized. In general, this keeps the peace for the following race season with future issues and solutions saved for the following year. The 2017 NEPRO leadership slate remained unaltered. Thank you all for your continued work. President Buddy Beaudoin presided over our meeting. He created a new position Director of Competition with the hope of relieving the contest director of some of his work as they are usually directly involved in racing themselves. Buddy did not foresee the role of the new position as an overseer but rather that of a peace maker with the goal of bringing more consistency to our races. Local AMA pylon contest board member and fellow district 6 NMPRA member Lloyd Burnham spoke on a number of 2017 AMA rulings that will affect racing this coming season. Namely, that composite tails will be allowed in AMA 424 competition. Also that if a race heat is re-flown, any pilot who was on the starting line is eligible for the re-fly even if he initially received a zero. In addition, a pilot receiving both a light and a cut while rounding pylon one would be entitled to a re-fly. Lloyd spoke of continued progress being made by our national group for a worker-less racing system. This included a lock-out that would prohibit the occurrence of both a light and a cut. Lloyd noted that we all have benefited from the fact that improvements are a worldwide pylon racing need and that some of this work has been prefunded. Lloyd spoke in some small detail regarding the cost and practical day to day use of a future workerless system transponder. Buddy spoke on a few safety and procedure issues. Namely, the importance of having a caller remain with the pilot until the race s conclusion and until all the craft are on the ground, noting that it is the caller s responsibly to be the eyes and ears of his teammate while he is busy landing. Buddy noted that it is okay to retrieve your plane before everyone lands, however, only when both the pilot and caller agree that it is safe to do so. As before, the starter can overrule your decision. Buddy stressed that common sense and safety should prevail. In the area of district 6 with which I am most familiar, we use the Arizona pylon racing association (APRA) race procedures. This allows for a combined matrix where both standard and expert pilots compete head to head with our experts flying ten laps to our standard pilots nine. In 2016, we had a standard pilot win the year-end standard championship two years in a row. Congratulations to Ola Nordell. There is not a member who doesn t know that you gave it your all in your victory. You broke out into expert in the last possible moments of our 2016 Date: Event Venue 4/30/2017 Ellington Early Spring Sunday 424, /04/2017 Salem Spring Saturday EF-1 06/05/2017 Salem Spring Sunday 424, /25/2017 Ellington Late Spring Sunday 424, /05/2017 Ellington Two-Day Saturday 424, /06/2017 Ellington Two-Day Sunday 424, /10/2017 Wintonbury Saturday 424, EF-1 09/24/2017 Salem Fall Saturday 424, 426 District 6 season and qualified to race in our expert class in You go! A discussion regarding this practice resulted in our standard championship racing procedures being appended on January 24, 2017 to expressly allow a standard pilot to receive a standard championship for multiple year provided they do not break out into our expert class with three sub-1:20 times. Most important was the formal announcement and presentation of our 2017 racing schedule which appeared on our website on January 3, 2017 with no changes to date. Here is a link: Please join us if you are able. Some thought and preparation has gone into this year s schedule with effort spent to avoid other national racing events. May is a very busy month so we will get started April 30, Please come join us always, but especially for our signature event, the Ellington Two-Day Race. As always there will be a free picnic on Saturday. I understand we may already have a few planning to travel to make the date; please mark your calendars. Thanks to all in advance. 6 DISTRICT NEWS District 7: Scotty Smithwick Well, I am pleased to report the SEMPRA transition is complete and settling nicely! The lights worked great at Tangerine with only one needed repair. God Bless Tom Scott! Scotty and Maureen learned the two race computer programs, and with the completion of their first race as CD in March, they will be pretty much On Board :-) SEMPRA, however, is very much in financial difficulty, so a word from our Treasurer: Hello Everyone I am Maureen, Scotty Smithwick s wife and caller. I am also the Treasurer of SEMPRA. Somehow I volunteered for this wonderful position in the world of model pylon racing. I am honored to be able to be a part of such a longrunning organization. And, from what I have been told, SEMPRA has done much for the world of Pylon Racing. Clearly, the financials of SEMPRA currently do not support the organization. We are truly In The Hole as they say. Regardless, Scotty & I will keep the lights on the field and the race fueled & flourishing as best we can. That said, we can sure use your help! Scotty and I would like to invite y all to join our modest membership, become part of SEMPRA so it can flourish once again and give all new and current racers the memories we have. Speaking of NEW Members," don t miss Scotty s updates of Joshua, Dean Stone s grandson :-) The fee for membership is $25 and with that you will get a Mulberry discount of $5 on one event per day. You can find the application form below and the address to send your dues is there also. While we are having great winter Florida weather, we are not racing because everyone is recovering from Santa Claus and getting ready for Phoenix! Back in the 90 s we left California for Arizona, and without question, Az in the winter is THE ONLY place to be - Gorgeous Sunsets :-) Our next SEMPRA race is scheduled for March 25 & 26 at Mulberry! Yours Truly just received his CD license, the race sanction is granted, redesigned trophies are ordered, lights are working, pylon flags are new, fuel is in hand, so all that remains is - Lunch! Is anyone up for Saturday Publix Subs w/ fresh bread, Boars Head meat and cheese, then KFC on Sunday, with ride home left overs - your thoughts? We are going to try to run all three classes! However, due to SEMPRA s poor financial status, I have requested & required that a minimum of pilots pre-register with paid entry fees to me no later than February 24. According to the AMA trophy person, I can still order 424 trophies and get them on time, given I have the money as of the 24th of February :-) Our normal April Ft. Lauderdale race has suffered scheduling conflicts and is currently trying to be moved to August! In addition, the race will be a two-day QM-40 Race! So hopefully, after Julian we get to head to Ft. Lauderdale and see how the really fast equipment holds up to a two day-errrrr! :-) :-) Now for the MOST important part of this column, Our newest arrival to Pylon Racing - In Training Mr. Joshua Helms! As most of you know, Joshua is Dean s grandson and at Tangerine, Joshua received a Quik-V6 kit - God Bless Rocket! And then a brand new Evolution NX46 happened to appear under the Christmas tree - Now, what are the chances of that? Needless to say, Grampa has been busy squeezing in flight lessons in-between endless winter storms! Since Tangerine, Grampa dusted off a Sig Cadet Sr., put a new plug in a Saito 65, charged up the batteries, and off to Old Julian they went! District 7 I just love this heart-warming stuff :-) :-) Like all of us flight instructors of old, Dean is using the Arms Around The Student method, and, I might add - quite successfully! As of the last flight, Grampa took off and just handed over the transmitter! While Josh is flying big left hand circles around the field, Grampa is taking pictures :-) See Grampa s Shadow :-) :-) :-) The one thing I have always so loved about kids is that regardless of the task, once they commit, they have no fear and Without Pause just know that they can do it. With proper support (our job:-), they just go off & Do It - So Cool! Until next time, good luck in Phoenix. Be safe & God bless! Scotty & Maureen 6
