weekend of April 6-8 2018. Springtime events in Virginia always run the risk of some unpredictable weather and this year was no exception!

Winter returned to Virginia International Raceway in the afternoon with temperatures falling and a wind kicking in from the north.

VDCA Wild Hare Run Virginia International Raceway April 6-8, 2018 story and photos by Bill Stoler The 16th Annual VDCA Wild Hare Run took place at the Virginia International Raceway during the weekend of April Springtime events in Virginia always run the risk of some unpredictable weather and this year was no exception! Friday s weather was very spring-like with temperatures climbing to around 70 degrees. Saturday morning greeted the racers with a light drizzle. Winter returned to Virginia International Raceway in the afternoon with temperatures falling and a wind kicking in from the north. Snow fell overnight, but Sunday weather would recover quickly and blue skies returned and along with it some great feature races. VIR is an ideal location for the spring event and it brings together racers from the north and south regions. The racing snowbirds are returning #86 Mark Wheatley, 1962 Triumph TR4. home from the south and the racers from the northeast (looking to jump-start spring) come together at VIR for this annual event. This event is hosted by the VDCA and is supported by VRG, including the thrilling open-wheel VRG Royale Racing Formula Ford Challenge Series. The weekend is also joined by the BMW Car Club of America with a racing event and school and the paddock is filled with a variety of racing machines. VDCA was started in 2000 in an effort to return to the roots of the sport. The VDCA kicked off their first year with an event at Kershaw s Carolina Motorsport Park. Today, the VDCA is a nonprofit club operated by member volunteers with a purpose of preserving, enjoying and racing reasonably period-authentic sports and racing cars from prewar racers through the golden eras of the fifties and sixties through the 1980 s. The annual event became The Wild Hare Run in 2002 when the VDCA event at VIR fell on Easter weekend. On Friday, the qualifying and practice sessions were held under blue skies and pleasant temperatures. The mandatory VDCA drivers meeting was held just prior to lunchtime on Friday. Race Director Mike Jackson welcomed the racers to the event, instructing everyone to enjoy the weekend and have fun. Qualifying resumed in the afternoon. The main event would be last event of the day. It s the infamous Australian style pursuit race known as the Wild Hare Run. The Wild Hare Run is essentially a handicap race that allows each car to compete for the overall win regardless of the class. #161 Henry Costanzo, 1973 Datsun 240Z; #38 George Wright, 1972 Datsun 240Z. Registration closes for the event earlier in the day, to allow the mathematical wizards (Mike Jackson and Doug Meis) ample time to crunch the numbers (qualifying times) and come up with the complex algorithm that will determine the starting order and most importantly, the duration of the Wild Hare Run! The racing cars are released at specified intervals based on qualifying times, starting with the slowest car first and the fastest car last. After the final car is released, the race directors/official scorers head to the scoring tower to keep track of this unusual race, featuring cars from all nine race groups. Theoretically, this should result in all the cars finishing at the same time! That is, if every driver ran his/her qualifying time and lost no time passing cars. This year s winner was Susan Patterson in her beautiful blue Cobra. At the Saturday night VDCA dinner, Susan was awarded the traditional Wild Hare Run trophy, an oversize stuffed Easter Bunny!

Clarke donated a special Bunny s Butt trophy for the second-place finisher, and that went to Roy Crowninshield who drove a 1980 Crossle 40F Club Ford in the Wild Hare Run.

Equally rare is to have a huge group of cars cross the finish line at the same time. This year s winner was Susan Patterson in her beautiful blue Cobra. For a number of years, and additional accolade has been created and awarded by Bob Clarke. Clarke donated a special Bunny s Butt trophy for the second-place finisher, and that went to Roy Crowninshield who drove a 1980 Crossle 40F Club Ford in the Wild Hare Run. The end of the Wild Hare Run may have marked the end of Friday s on-track activity, but off-track parties were just getting started. In the Royale Formula Ford Challenge Series area of the paddock, the RFFCS paddock party with great food and beverages including a chili cook-off contest. A variety of raffle prizes are awarded from series sponsors, including Hoosier Tires and RaceQuip. Over at the VIR Motorsport Technology park, in what has become a WHR weekend tradition, Dave and Robyn Handy throw open the doors to SASCO racing with an open house and welcome party. 40 May 2018 Victory Lane Visitors to the shop were treated to plenty of great food and beverages. It s a great opportunity to get up close and personal with racing cars in various stage of restoration and maintenance and see the kind of work that SASCO offers. The shop also has an impressive display of historic posters and photos, which captured the attention of many at the wellattended event. ROYALE FF CHALLENGE SERIES: Saturday morning qualifying sessions got underway in windy, wet conditions with temperatures falling. #4 Shawn Bullard, 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV; #43 Hank Giffin, 1959 Elva Courier. The first race of the day was a race for Formula Fords and saw a limited number of the openwheel Fords venturing out on the wet track with some gusty winds. Overcoming the less than ideal conditions and capturing the win in a 1981 Crossle 45F was Scott Nettleship. The runner-up finisher, Michael Humme in a 1979 Crossle 35F. The 1979 Lola T540 piloted by Robert Zatz finished third. Race #2 for the RFFCS on Saturday was also captured by Nettelship in his well-prepared Crossle, but this time it was David Allison finishing runner up in his beautiful 1969 Alexis Mk 14. Mike Spence finished third in his 1972 Crossle 20F during another wet session. The feature race for the RFFCS took place at noon on Sunday and Mother Nature finally cooperated with clear skies and abundant sunshine. Scott Fairchild and Leon Hodges- Austin led the 24-car field to the green flag with Scott Fairchild taking the lead. Fairchild would take the win rather easily in his 1978 Zink Z-10, including the RFFCS winner s wreath for Club Fords. The battle would be waged for the second spot between Austin and John Gaither. Austin was driving the beautiful 1972 Crossle 20F owned by Bernard Bradpiece and battled back and forth with Gaither until lap 5, going off-course at the left hook. Gaither would go on to finish in the runner-up spot in his PRS RH-01. Austin would recover and finish fifth. Tomas LaCosta in the 1969 Titan Mk 5 rounded out the podium with a third-place finish overall and captured the RFFCS wreath for Historic Fords. The winner of the RFFCS wreath for Formula Fords was Bob Albert in his 1988 Chevron B Scott Nettleship received #128 Shea Brown, 1974 Fiat 128 CS; #49 David Conrad, 1959 MGA Roadster; #425 John Vann, 1959 Turner Mk 1. the Wild Hare RFFCS Field Champion Award. Nettleship started in the eighth spot, fell back to 21st and battled back to finish eighth in his 1981 Crossle 45F. The final race for the Fords was captured by John Gaither followed by runner-up Scott Nettleship and finishing third was Thomas Fraelich. GROUP 1: Shea Brown took the Group 1 win on Saturday in his 1974 Fiat 128CS under very wet conditions. Tim Slater finished second in a 1965 Triumph Spitfire, followed by John Vann in the High-Performance Heroes 1959 Turner Sports Mk 1. Sunday s race was captured by Larry Smith in his 1962 MG Midget over John Jones in a 1967 Austin Healy. Finishing third was Any Russell in his 1972 MG Midget. The highest finishing Formula Vee was Michael Ennis in his 1969 Lynx B, finishing eighth overall. GROUP 2/5/7: Roger Cassin led all the way in the Saturday afternoon race during what may have been the high water mark of the inclement weekend weather! Roger acquired

his 1988 Swift DB2 recently and did a fine job acclimating himself to the S2000 during the weekend.

Most of the race was run under double yellow and Mark Coombs took the win in his 1990 Lola T90. The S2000 s got another chance to race with the Group 2-5-7 contest later in the afternoon.

GROUP 6/8: On Saturday, with a light rain falling and a very wet track, Paul Netterstom took the win in his 1961 Lotus Super 7 over the 2nd-place finisher, Ray #181 Scott Curry, 1976 Datsun 280Z; #4

3 his 1988 Swift DB2 recently and did a fine job acclimating himself to the S2000 during the weekend. Sunday s S2000 race got off to a bad start with several cars getting collected in turn 1 on the first lap. Most of the race was run under double yellow and Mark Coombs took the win in his 1990 Lola T90. The S2000 s got another chance to race with the Group contest later in the afternoon. In that race it was Henry Payne IV taking the win over his son, Henry Payne V and Davis Jones finishing third. GROUP 6/8: On Saturday, with a light rain falling and a very wet track, Paul Netterstom took the win in his 1961 Lotus Super 7 over the 2nd-place finisher, Ray #181 Scott Curry, 1976 Datsun 280Z; #4 Shawn Bullard, 1974 Alfa Romeo GTV. #94 Brian MacEachern, 1959 Austin Healey Bugeye. Korman in his BMW 325E. Joe Liles was the 3rd-place finisher in a BMW Sunday s race was run under blue skies and Dennis Moser took the win in his amazing fireengine red 1964 Pontiac GTO. Lee Buckner was runner up in his Old Skool Racing 1968 Ford Mustang. Les Gonda finished third in his MGB GT V8. GROUP 3: Saturday s Group 3 race was run under wet conditions and Dave Edsinger in his 1966 Yenko Stinger Coupe made his way around a wet VIR circuit to take the win over Tony Drews in his 1963 Triumph TR4. Craig Seifert finished third in his 1966 MGB. Sunday s race win was captured by Joey Bojalad in his historic 1960 Elva Mk VI over the Porsche 356 Roadster driven by Michael Zubko. Finishing third was the Triumph TR4 driven by Tony Drews. VDCA ENDURO: The VDCA Enduro featured a full field of 60 cars. Luckily it was run under blue skies on Sunday! Obviously, there was plenty of action and in the end, it was a trio of Lola T90 s leading the way. Mark Coombs captured the win followed by runner-up Henry Payne IV and Samuel Payne rounding out the podium in third. The 2018 edition of the VDCA Wild Hare Run is in the books. Despite the weather challenges, it was a good, safe racing weekend. Good times with a bunch of great people. Vintage racing is so much more than the cars. It s all about the people and the resulting camaraderie. Preserving the racing cars of the past, exhibiting these cars on track, and attracting the racing enthusiasts of tomorrow. VDCA and VRG appear to have found that right balance. A big thanks to the clubs, the participants, volunteers, and staff at VIR for putting on this great event. See you next year! 5 Royale FF Series Kicks Off at VIR story by Bernard Bradpiece, Storm Field, and Andrew Stein photos by Bill Stoler Despite a weather forecast that called for the possibility of snow yes, that s right, snow (in southern Virginia in April!) an event record 35 entries signed up for the opening round of the 2018 Royale Formula Ford Challenge Series. Five of those entries were brand new to the RFFCS group, which in its third season now stands as the largest single-class vintage race group in the eastern US. Maybe none of us believed the forecast or maybe everyone was just so excited to see each other and compare mechanical improvements, polish old skills and hopefully develop new ones. Clear, cool conditions greeted drivers on Friday morning as they made their way #10 Thomas Fraelich, 1979 Crossle CF. through the uphill esses and down the long, fast back straightaway. A brown haze wafted behind as a winter s worth of driving rust started working its way off both cars and drivers. In a few occasions that rust haze might have obscured the vision of drivers or fouled the tires, resulting in a few harmless spins. With the first session under their belts and with warmer temperatures creating better track conditions in the afternoon, driving prowess returned. Scott Fairchild in his 1978 Zink Z10 led the field as he would do all weekend, with Leon Hodges-Austin, driving Bernard Bradpiece s 1972 Crossle 20 and Doug Meis in a Lola T340 hot on his heels. Unfortunately for the always quick Meis, a bearing failure that spread like a virus, took out all his gears. Joe Griffen is always entertaining at the pointy end of the pack in his 1981 Crossle 45, but he ended up getting sidelined with a fractured stub axle and spent the rest of the weekend helping fix other peoples cars. Others, like #27 Doug Meis, 1974 Lola T340; #151 John Gaither, PRS RH-01. Paul Buttrose struggled with distributor and carburetion woes (fixed by Scott and Dave Fairchild) and the considerable challenges of the track but most all returned for the Sunday feature race. With the weather holding cool, but dry on Friday evening, the RFFCS party had a special Blue-Grey Chili Challenge. The Blue side offered up four versions and the Grey three styles. The win went to the Grey side, with Hank Giffin s Scarlett s Revenge white chicken chili edging out the Blue s beef and pork (no bean) Philly Chili. So, in the spirit of he who gives gas, gets gas Royale s Chris Shoemaker awarded 5 gallons of race fuel to Chili Champ Giffin. Saturday was as predicted a miserable, rainy day, with temperatures dropping steadily and into the low 30s by late afternoon with a raw wind blowing. Only four were brave enough to take to the track for the first race, with Scott Nettleship s 1981 Crossle 45F taking a win over Michael Hummel s F. One of the intrepid and possibly coldblooded racers, David Allison, was grateful for the rain lowering speeds about 25% when a drive donut failed in the high-speed turn 10. Thanks to gusty winds, Robert Zatz commented that he was working just as hard trying to drive his Lola on the straight as he was in the corners. Sunday dawned with bright blue skies and sub-freezing temperatures, but by noon the temperature had recovered to what felt like a balmy 45 degrees. The 24 surviving cars rolled around to take the green for the RFFCS feature race with Scott Fairchild jumping into an unchallenged lead to take 1st overall. Behind him, Leon Austin and John Gaither in a PRS RH-01 went at it for 2nd before Leon got behind with the steering on lap 5 and went off roading to the black flag station. Tom LaCosta ran to third in his unusual and fast 1969 Titan Mk5 taking the Historic Ford award and with panache as he coasted over the line out of gas (his crew chief Dolf said that was planned). Fourth was hard fought, finally going to Michael Hummel s Crossle 35F over Chris Forrer s 1978 Tiga by 7/10s of a second. Tom Fraelich prevailed in a fierce 4-way battle for 9th, with 9th to 12th separated by 0.6 seconds. The entire mid pack from 12th to 18th was changing places multiple times every lap. It was great to see everyone jumping out of their cars for the post race pictures laughing and teasing each other over their individual moments in the race. Scott Nettleship took home the coveted Field Champion award given to the driver who best typifies the spirit of the race weekend.
