1 Exhaust Notes photo by Kris Martison Nebraska Region SCCA August 2018 Steering Column Steve Ducharme Regional Executive The 2018 SCCA Championship season is upon us. It begins with the R&S/SPS Midwest Divisional Solo Championship in Lincoln from August 3 to 5. Over 100 competitors were registered a week in advance and it looks like the event will exceed 140 entries. The National Solo Championships, also in Lincoln, begin with the Tire Rack ProSolo Finale August 30 to September 2nd, followed by the Tire Rack Solo Nationals from September 3 to 7. The Club Racing Championships, called the Runoffs, will be held at Sonoma Raceway from October 13 to 21. The DirtFish RallyCross National Championships will be held in Indianola, IA, from October 12 to 14. You will find more information about these events at nrscca.com, midiv.org, and scca.com. Club leaders have been discussing new ways to attract new members. We have had an active presence on Facebook now for several years, and recently added a New Member Committee Chair position. Matthew has decided to step down from this job. Replacing him is Tony Mitera, who will be communicating with first-time competitors and new members, and generally seeing that newcomers have a good experience and are introduced to more experienced members who can welcome them and how them the ropes. Along the same lines, board member Chris Harrison suggested that we do come radio advertising for Solo events. We worked with Lincoln sports radio station KNTK The Ticket. The board voted to extend the free entry offer for the rest of 2018 to newcomers competing in Solo and RallyCross events. Please tell your friends! As many of you know, I have been a Miata owner and driver for over 25 years, and have competed in Solo and ProSolo since joining SCCA ten years ago. Now the Miata wasn t the first affordable sports car I am sure you can name many of its predecessors. I recently had the pleasure of driving one of the first sports cars built for the masses. No it is not a Mazda, or a Triumph, or an MG, but a Ford! Ford built 15 million Model T cars from 1909 to 1927, an number exceeded only by the Volkswagen Beetle, and some of them could be called sports versions. This July, I joined nine other drivers for the Model T Driving Experience, sponsored by the Museum American Speed at Speedway Motors in Lincoln. We had a morning of history, driving instruction, followed by an afternoon driving the Museums collection of three Model Ts. I got to drive three different cars, an elegant town car, a grand tourer named Moly, and a 1914 speedster, which I think qualifies as the world s first affordable sports car. The have two more Experiences scheduled for this year, on August 18th and September 22nd. 3 Nebraska Regional Meetings Membership meetings are held as the need arises and will be announced in the newsletter or by postcard, and on the NRSCCA web site ( Board of Governors meetings are held on the last Thursday of the month at Denny s at I-80 exit 432. 4 Profile: Tony Mitera How s it going, my name is Tony Mitera and I ve recently begun to serve as the New Member Chair. I ve been participating in autocross for two years now, first in my steadfast 08 Mazda 6 and now in my stupidly fun 17 Focus ST. From my first event I knew this was something I was going to be doing for a while and I threw myself deeply into learning what it was all about. I remember what it was like for my first day out on the tarmac, and how helpful it was to have people guide me through my first event. I ve enjoyed repaying that hospitality by helping novices learn the ropes and watch them conquer their first day. I work in IT as a career, because solving logic puzzles as a living is oddly satisfying. My beautiful spouse Rhi is a fantastic mom for our daughter Ellie, who at nearly three years old can name multiple car manufacturers and flips through Sports Car magazine. She ll be who she wants to be, but I would not be surprised if she takes an interest in motorsport in some form. In my spare time I play a lot of video games and used to moonlight freelance video game critic. If you see me on-site, and especially if you could use some assistance, give me a holler! Back to the Future for Club Racing The upcoming Club Race at RPM on Saturday, Septempber 22 and Sunday, September 23 will be Back to the Future, a reunion of the DMVR and the NRSCCA. NRSCCA Club Racing Chair Kevin Kopecky wants our drivers to know that we are trying to work together with the DMVR and we need your help! We need volunteers to come out to race/work the event! (Supps will be out along with registration on Motorsportsreg very soon!) Let s go racing!
