Linda and I knew that God had called us to be members of the Team RFC family when we traveled to Phoenix in February of I received my marching orders that weekend from Jim Jack. He directed me to be the series chaplain for the Southern Drag Boat Association (SDBA). The SDBA season opener was May 16-17, Linda and I realized very quickly that our family had grown a lot when we held hands and prayed with drag boat racers on the ramp at Cameron Park that weekend in Waco, Texas. Our family grew even larger in April of 1999 when I was assigned the task of leading the South Central Region for Team RFC. We attended bracket races, car shows and NHRA Divisional races in Region Four. Our family was growing by leaps and bounds. Linda and I would load up our 1991 Winnebago Chieftain and set out from Oklahoma City on a mission from God, fulfilling the Great Commission : Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. This is a scripture that we focused on time and again as we faced various challenges with our new family and their exciting exploits. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me Ken Owen expanded my duties even further in October of 1999 when he assigned me to be the lead chaplain at the 12th Annual AutoZone Nationals in Memphis, TN. I wasn t sure if I was ready for this significant increase of responsibility that Ken put on me that day. I proclaimed, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil 4:13) and boldly went forth on that cold and blustery weekend to fulfill His calling. I served at many NHRA national events for Ken until January 1, 2005 when I succeeded Ken as the NHRA National Events Series Chaplain and also became the President of Team RFC. Our family grew larger and larger with each new assignment. Our family, as large as it is, is not without challenges. We have officiated and attended many funerals. We have prayed in emergency rooms all over America. And we have made and received phone calls that have broken our hearts. Would we change one minute of sharing God s Love, Grace and Mercy? NO! God has called us to His ministry, Team RFC, the same as He has called hundreds of other chaplains since its inception 46 years ago. Team RFC is prayed up and prepared to Go forth whenever we are called; and that is often. We have 370 volunteer chaplains currently serving throughout America and in foreign lands. God continues to provide for all of the needs of this ministry through our faithful friends and partners - just like you. You are with us at every chapel service, accident scene, baptism, and memorial service. Thank you for helping send Team RFC volunteers into our mission field the world of motorsports. Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!

2 Tommy Grimes Nitro Harley Man The unassuming clean-cut man puts in his weekly time at T & L Automotive in North Carolina. A repair shop he has owned for twenty six years. He s been married for eighteen years to wife Stephanie, who has a twenty year old son Jamie, and they have two boys Tyler and Logan. At least two times a week, Tommy and Stephanie grab the two younger boys and go speed skating on rollerblades as a family. The boys like to challenge dad to see who is the fastest on the quarter mile track. Tommy says, The boys also like to argue who gets to say the prayer before meals in the Grimes household. And at times there are stereo prayers from the two boys. Twenty weekends a year, Tommy hops on a plane and flies to a drag strip somewhere in the USA. He arrives at the track and finds the Ray Price transporter located in the pits. Next, the un-tattooed Tommy, a non-looking Harley rider dons his leathers and helmet, gloves and flak jacket and climbs aboard the Ray Price owned and sponsored nitrobreathing Harley Davidson motorcycle. This forty something man, Tommy Grimes happens to be the NHRA record holder on a Top Fuel Harley at 6.16 seconds and 236 mph. He s also posted an unofficial run of 247 mph, but the run didn t count as a record because the front wheel was off the ground as he sped through the timing traps at that incredible speed on one wheel. Early in life, Tommy grew up in a Christian home, and received Christ as his Lord and Savior around the age of seven or eight while attending a Christian youth camp. Birthday Challenge Are you celebrating a birthday this year? Of course you are! So, we want to make sure and wish you a Happy Birthday! Birthdays are special for all of us. It is something everybody has in common - we all have a birthday! Last year Jim Jack issued the first Team RFC Birthday Challenge. He took the challenge and donated $67 in celebration of his 67th birthday ($1.00 for every year). Jim encouraged others to join him in the Birthday Challenge. Our President, Larry Smiley, also accepted the Birthday Challenge. He also made a $25 donation to honor Jim Jack on his birthday. Larry called this the Team RFC Chaplain Challenge. Our challenge to you is to accept the Birthday Challenge when your next birthday rolls around. Then challenge as many friends as you can to accept the Team RFC Birthday Challenge and Chaplain Challenge...hopefully on a yearly basis. By doing so, we can spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to more people. Join in the fun and support an organization that really cares for you! To accept the Birthday Challenge, go to At the age of sixteen, Tommy started racing his mother s car at the local drag strip and in 1995 he started racing street motorcycles. From 1996 through 2005 he raced in the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle class. He had wins in Pro Stock Motorcycle in the AMRA and Pro Star associations. And then with what he says, A lack of brains, I started riding a Top Fuel Harley. Ray Price is my sponsor and owner of the Top Fuel Harley, and Jeremy Hoy is our crew chief. When asked about preparing himself to ride a nitro Harley at over 230 mph, and what he thinks about it, Tommy says, If I have to think about it, I wouldn t climb on anything that you have to wear a bullet proof vest to ride, and the rider cannot sit on the bike when it is being started either! I say a personal prayer, and then seek out prayers from RFC chaplains, knowing God is going to look after me. Once I climb on the motorcycle, all I think about is doing the burnout and making it from point A to B. As the bike slows down in the shutoff area, I thank God for a safe run. In July 2015 while racing at the NHRA National event in Sonoma, CA, Ron Gledhill was racing along side of me and as we crossed the finish line, he lost control of his bike and ran into the back of my bike. A split second before that moment, I felt the hand of God unknowingly push me down and Ron rode up over my back. Both bikes were damaged and neither of us could compete at that race. The worst part about the whole accident thing was having to call home and tell Stephanie what happened. She wanted to see me to make sure I was alright, and she wasn t okay until I got back home and she could see me in person. It was a miracle neither of us was injured. When riding at 235 mph, it s not if but when a crash is going to happen. It s very comforting praying with a RFC chaplain, and I am thankful to all of them. In my leathers with my helmet on, it s an unexplainable warm continued on pg 7 Connect To Team RFC Have you seen Team RFC s website recently? 3 This Page Sponsored By Richland Seattle Lewiston Gary Heidt - Hot Rod Guy Hot rodding as my automotive hobby started at a very young age. Building model cars and racing slot cars, and winning championships were a lot of fun when I was young. Then I moved on to building gokarts. I wanted to buy a mini-bike, but my dad suggested I buy a small motorcycle so I could actually ride it on the street legally. That led me all the way to my 21st birthday, building and riding motorcycles, even two Harley choppers. I was never a biker, and got tired of being looked at as one, so I sold the last bike and bought a partially finished T-Bucket hot rod. I got the T-Bucket built and running in about two years, and drove it for a summer. The sun beating down on you really does a number without a top, so I sold it and bought a stock Model A Ford and built a hot rod out of it. I had it running in a year, but not painted, then drove it for two years including a trip to California and back. I sold it to a friend and bought another friend s `33 Ford coupe in I still have that car, and have driven it every year except two. When I finished the 33 in 1985 my friend asked me what I was going to do now. He suggested I start making suspension kits for the hot rod industry. The rest, as they say, is history, as Heidt s Hot Rod Shop took off like a rocket. The industry was apparently ready and waiting for the type of suspension products I designed, so the company grew by leaps and bounds. I started in my garage at home, and ended up twenty two years later in a 25,000 sq. ft. building, with forty three employees. The business was built on integrity and honesty in all our transactions, either with vendors or customers. All these years as I grew up I knew there was a God. I was raised as a Catholic when I was younger, but never understood or thought I needed Jesus. Then in 1988 I met Kathy (who is now my wife), she bought me a Bible and I started reading it. Kathy was a believer, and encouraged me along the way. In 1999 I accepted Jesus as my Savior, and really began to live for Him. I asked my advertising guy to insert the Christian Fish into all my magazine ads, of which there were many. He told me it was a bad idea, as people will be offended and not buy my products. I told him I did not agree, and sure enough, when the next round of ads came out we had people calling us and thanking us for making such a great statement! The business was truly blessed by God and has been a great opportunity to witness for Jesus. I like to tell about the time I was embezzled by our bookkeeper she got probably over 250K, over a few year period but we never missed paying a bill or payroll. God always provided. The best blessing was actually at the SEMA show. I was inducted into the Hot Rod Industry Alliance Hall of Fame at the Awards Banquet. When I went up onto the stage, I mentioned how Art Morrison and others had given thanks to their shop and employees for their success, but I had to give thanks to another for mine. I thanked Jesus Christ; my Lord and Savior for my success, and about a third of the audience stood up and applauded. It was the best moment of my business career. What a great opportunity the Lord gave me to praise Him that night. I sold the business in I still go to shows around the country driving either my 1933 Ford Coupe, or my freshly built 1932 Ford Roadster. It is amazing how you can build a car so easily when you are retired. But what I really enjoy now at the shows is witnessing for Jesus, as many people know my walk. I take every opportunity to share His Word with others, as God has given me many opportunities to share. It is easier than you think, if you just trust God for the words. I enjoy life and the opportunities the Lord has now given me. I hope and pray they continue. page 3

6 Bennie The Wizard Osborn 2 Time NHRA Top Fuel Champion Eddie Baugher was fortunate enough to sit down with Bennie The Wizard Osborn. He was the first driver to ever win back-to-back world championships in the NHRA. His first win came in 1967 in Tulsa, OK, against Don The Snake Prudhomme. His second championship was accomplished by defeating John The Zookeeper Mulligan. Bennie is a champion in every sense of the word. He was a champion on the track and continues to be a champion in life. Eddie Baugher: How did you get started in drag racing? Bennie: I was a very fast driver up and down the highways. And the first thing I knew, I didn t have a driver s license. It was bad because when I got married I didn t have a driver s license. I always liked to drag race. So I quit drag racing on the streets and started going to the strips that were sanctioned. I built me a little roadster and it would run roughly 100 mph, in about 13 or 14 seconds. It had a little 283 Chevy in it, and at that time I worked for Chevrolet, so that worked out real well for me. But that is how I got started in drag racing, and that way I could keep a driver s license. EB: What year was that? Bennie: Just before Columbus came over No, No (chuckling). It was in The first little car I made, the roadster, we took it out to the Tulsa North Airport on a rope. We drug it out there behind a car. First day I got out there they wouldn t let me run it. I didn t know anything about lock washers, cotter keys and all that kind of stuff. It didn t pass tech. The Toppers Car Club worked with the Tulsa Timing Association and they did the tech work on the car, and I didn t pass. My objective to go out and drag race was because there was this guy named (Bob) Creitz, and he was a killer. And boy, I mean his car was fast! And I said, I am going to beat that guy. The first day I was able to drag race out there Creitz beat me. My car was about 85 inches long. It was very short, it wanted to make u-turns all the time, and it wasn t fast. But it was fun. That week I brought the car home and cut the frame in two I think I put eighteen inches in it. Two weeks later I took it out there and I beat him (Creitz) the second time I took it out there. So that s how I got started drag racing. I finally got a trailer and pulled it to Oklahoma City and raced Mar Car (owned by Bud Carson). It (the track) was at the Oklahoma City Fair Grounds. We run just right beside the railroad tracks. Bud s son Shane Carson wound up racing sprint cars and was very successful at that. Bud Carson is gone, but when you get to be as old as I am, most everybody is gone. All of your good friends keep checking out on you, but you have got to remember that we all are going to do the same thing. So don t let it bother you. We are all gonna do this it s a hundred percent. If you get to thinking that you are really important, well you double your fist up real tight and put it in a bucket of water. And then you pull your fist out and you look at the hole that s how important all of us are. We re not important at all. We are only important to ourselves. And like the Bible says, our life is but a vapor and pretty soon it s gone. So we do the best we can do. Life is short you better enjoy it. That is why God gave us all knowledge and this beautiful country for us to enjoy not abuse, but to enjoy. We should enjoy it. And we should enjoy it with everybody. But a lot of people are selfish and they don t do that. And it s a shame, because if you don t forgive your neighbor, God can t forgive you. You need to remember some of the Golden Rule. EB: Thinking of that, share a little bit about when you came to faith in Christ, and how that influenced your racing and how you do business. Bennie: I was baptized in my grandfather s pond when I was about 10 years old. I was a country boy, so I knew what I wanted to do. I won t tell you I did that all the time. The best thing that can be said about anybody is they treated people how they liked to be treated; that they were honest and sincere. The principles of the scriptures are tremendous. So many people just bump over them and pick out the part they like and that other stuff can go to thunder. You can t go to the Bible and just pick out what you want and let the rest of it go. It s all there for us. So, you need to read it and pay attention to what it says. The only thing in life that matters is what you do for God, because our life is very short. Now some of us have gotten real old, but it is short at best. EB: You are a two-time, top fuel, world champion (1967 & 1968). What was it like the first time you won? Bennie: It was the biggest thrill of my life at that time in my racing career because here I am, just a local boy. There were so many people who helped me. None of us are an island. I have said this before, whoever is successful, there s a reason but there s also a reason that hardly ever gets mentioned God has helped us along. He helps us every day and He is there all the time. I hate to hear people say that old so and so has a bad sickness and all we can do is pray. My story is this, you should pray to begin with. God is not the last resort. He should be first in our lives and we should treat everybody like He does. He loves everybody; He is fair with everybody; He is honest if He says something He will do it, and we need to do the same. We ll never be perfect, but we can strive towards that. Heeding The Call Team RFC often receives requests for staff to cover local tracks, races, and car shows. Sometimes we don t have staff available to meet these requests. If you, or someone you know, would like to explore a possible call to be volunteer field staff for Team RFC, please contact a regional director, or call Eddie Baugher at work or cell , or send us an at TeamRFC@TeamRFC.org. 7 Tommy Grimes continued and fuzzy feeling I get praying prior to making a run down the quarter mile drag strip. When I have some spare time, I also ride my 2008 soft tail custom Harley on the street. I own and built myself a 1929 Ford Model A rat rod. I also like to build street rods, and it s a lot more fun building one with someone else s money. [Editor s Note: The world of drag racing lost one of its most iconic figures with the passing of Ray Price, on December 16, A native of North Carolina, he is best known for his many successes in motorcycle drag racing with the IHRA and NHRA, among others. He was an inductee in the American Motorcycle Association Hall of Fame, the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, the N.C. Drag Racing Hall of Fame, and the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame. Price, who owned Harley-Davidson and Triumph motorcycle dealerships in his hometown of Raleigh, was also actively involved with the defending and two-time NHRA Harley-Davidson Top Fuel championship-winning Ray Price Motorsports Racing Team. Ray was a North Carolina icon with a huge heart, an unwavering passion for sharing his love of motorcycling, and a dedication to philanthropy and community service. He is survived by his wife, Jean, his daughter, Robin, and grandchildren Rebecca and Jordan Richardson.] Bob & Lori Scott Sprinting For Jesus Our SRS Motorsports Team involvement with RFC started many years ago, and we feel extremely grateful to have been a small part of the Team RFC family. Our racing began in the late 1970 s and continued through the 2014 sprint car season. In 1998, while campaigning a USAC pavement sprint car, we stepped up our commitment to RFC and became acutely aware of, and grateful to, the Lord for all the blessings He had sent our way. The RFC connection provided us with the opportunity to share our love for the Lord and minister in such an easy way to fans and race participants alike. We used bright red RFC embossed balloons, passed out after the races to the children, to open conversations about the blessings of the Lord. Blessings come in so many ways, not just race wins and championships and we found that passing out the balloons blessed us by doing so. It was amazing to see the pits filled with a sea of red balloons and to have the opportunity to talk with so many people about RFC and all they do to support racers and fans. Team RFC chaplains, Dave Sweet and Jim Sheppard have been an integral part of our lives and our RFC experience. Dave was our pastor in Paradise, California for about 25 years and remains a close friend. Jim has provided support to us, our team and our drivers for the years since we moved to Washington and he helped us dedicate our 2014 championship to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 2015 we decided to take a break from fulltime racing after the 2014 season provided us with a 410 sprint car championship and a win at the prestigious Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway in Alger, WA. As we write this, we have not formulated any future plans but will always be supporters of Team RFC and its commitment to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. God bless Team RFC for all you do and have done for our sport! Gifts-In-Kind Update Team RFC continues to be the recipient of gifts-in-kind from many wonderful supporters. Gifts-in-kind can include vehicles, computers, office equipment, frequent flier miles and buddy passes, and prizes for raffles and drawings.
