This month, we ve got results from a few state championships: Michigan, Virginia and Washington, plus the Canadian Championship results. I ll delay publication of next month s edition so as to include the results of the 2002 Nationals. One big change from past issues is that I ve been instructed by AAFTA to stop sending copies to subscribers whose subscriptions have expired. We are going to try to go to a twice-yearly renewal process, which will make it easier for us at AAFTA to manage subscriptions and also make it easier for subscribers by adopting some kind of renewal notice. The details will be discussed and finalized at the Nationals, and I ll explain the new policies and procedures here. Until then, check the mailing label of your last issue to find your expiration date. Sorry to have to cut folks off, but with nearly half of our subscriber list past their expiration date, drastic measures have to be taken. Good luck to everyone at the Nationals; travel safely, and enjoy the match. Wish I was joining you! Shoot straight and enjoy the issue. 5 WESTERN WAYNE COUNTY CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION September 19, 2002 Ken Reeves 2002 Michigan State Championship Even though the weather forecast called for clearing skies, mother nature proved to be as challenging as the course for WWCCA s 2002 state championship match. While the course was more difficult than our normal monthly venue, the drizzle that dampened our bodies, did little to dampen the spirit of the 18 shooters who attended this match. Seasoned competitors from Indiana, and Tennessee joined the Michigan group to compete for our state championship 80 shot match. An early lunch break had everyone inside to get dried off, and fill their tummies with bratwurst, corn on the cob, potato salad, chips and cookies. After lunch, the rain stopped, but dark skies kept us wondering what else mother nature had in store for us. As it turned out, she held off additional rain, but the darkness made the targets very difficult to see and range find. We also had the pleasure of a visit from long time friend Lou Vankoevering, who was unable to compete due to health problems, but did manage to get in a lot of shooting, with his 35mm camera and his many stories of days gone by. He should have some great photos to share, thanks Lou!! Some very impressive scores were recorded, of particular interest was that of Dan Kleiner with a score of 72 out of a possible 80 with his TX-200!! Our open class champion is Eric Moe. PCP class champion is Phil Herman. Spring gun class champion is Dan Kleiner. These competitors are the 2002 Michigan state champions. Our congratulations to all of them!! 6 BAGA - Badgerland AirGun Association Field Target Match August 17, 2002 Another great day at BAGA for our monthly match. The temps hovered in the 80 s and, thanks to our draught, there were no bugs to be found anywhere. The wooded course did offer some relief from the sun and heat and the shade was appreciated by all. Of course, some of the lanes still caused beads of sweat to appear, but that wasn t due to the heat, but rather from a few of the challenging shots. The final course preparations were made prior to match start and we shot the Back Course, for a total of 52 shots. The match scores again represent the diversity of our shooters as well as the improvement of many new shooters. Congratulations to Allen Zasadny for his win. Again congrats to Brandon Carrol for another First Place win in the Piston class, again with his R-1. We continue to see Terry Peterson doing well in the Chair Class and we have had other interest by medically challenged shooters who have yet to join Terry in this specialized class. Once we have a couple more shooters in this class, we will award them on the local level as well. Awards were presented at the conclusion of the event and as usual we enjoyed snacks and drinks provided by Ron Weber. Thanks again to all the members for their help and donations. Our next match will be the Badgerland Regionals to be held on Saturday/Sunday, September 14-15, Congratulations to all winners. 7 BLUEGRASS AIRGUN CLUB NEWS Greetings from Wilmore, Kentucky. This is the new home of the Bluegrass Airgun Club. We are now a Division of the Bluegrass Sportsmens League located on 1400 acres atop the Kentucky River palisades. Our area consists of several acres with a 200 year old dry laid stone wall between open fields for our zero range and deep woods for serious FT competition. The zero range has four FT lanes (including a stander) with three targets each, in a small clump of woods right next to the open part. It is here that many of our monthly shoots occur because of its convenience. If there is a good turnout or if we have out of town guests, we select the best of the 25 woods lanes we maintain and have some truly challenging matches. Many have asked if we plan a regional shoot this year, and the answer is no as construction work and deer season collide with no time between. As of today (27 Aug) we have the ¼ mile road to the range graded and spread with #2s. The 60 covered firing range has been graded and four corner posts set. But there is still too much to be done. Next season is a certainty pig roast and all. Below are the results of our August shoot consisting of 20 shots The sky was threatening all day and really opened up as we were taking our last shots. Fortunately we had eaten our usual fare of venison (Robert is cleaning out his refrigerator) and potato salad and beans supplied by Shela Warhorse before the deluge. 16 Butch Lykins JW-65Mk. 8 Canadian Championships - August 10 & 11, 2002 Waterloo Field Target Club Written by Tim MacSweyn There was plenty of sunshine on a couple of fairly typical August days in Southern Ontario. The temperature ranged from the mid to upper 80s and the wind increased with the heat. We had an even dozen shooters show up for the match, including 3 American shooters who fit in quickly and very well. We headed out to the lanes at 11:00 Am on Saturday and many shooters were shooting clean or very close to it. The Red Course on Saturday was the easier of the two days. The scores showed this, as Billy shot clean on the day, Brian and Dennis dropped one and a total of 6 shooters dropped 4 or less. There was one windy lane out in a field that accounted for many of the missed shots. The hit percent on the day was over 85%. After the Red Course on Saturday, we stuffed ourselves with Pizza and then headed to the Range for our Buffalo hunt. The target was a silhouette of a Buffalo and we were shown the Plexiglas scoring mask before we shot. We had to remember where the 10 spot of about 1 diameter was and try to put the pellets in that spot. The best five of 8 shots counted. The wind was variable and very unpredictable. It could blow your shot left or right, up or down. Mike Ferrara shot a 47/50 in the first round of 3 shooters to set a very high standard. George Harde with his TX tied him, but Brian nipped him by one point to win the Buffalo Hunt. He took home a Combro Chronograph in a wood box that was custom made by Hans Bormann. On Sunday it did not take long on the White to see it was going to be a tougher day. There were small kill zones at close range, small KZs at medium range and full KZs at long range on windy lanes. The hit percentage fell to just under 75%. The wind, the small kill zones and mental errors affected everyone, but they affected Brian the least. He made very few mental errors and played the wind well. He dropped only 4 shots on the day to come up with an impressive two-day total of 113/118 to win the match. He chose the cannon that Hans made by hand out of brass. This was an impressive prize and the smile on Brian s face showed it. Dennis dropped only 5 on the day, the last one was his own.25 KZ target, to drop him out of a tie with Brian. He finished in second with a 112/118 and chose a Hans-made brass and wood TX200 that was mounted on a plaque. Billy had some trouble with some of the targets and dropped 7 on the day to finish with a 111/118 to take third and one of Hans custom made flip-up/flip down targets. The remainder of the shooters went up in order to choose their prize and all came away with something for their efforts. George Hamilton donated some prizes to the table and many thanks to him for his prizes and for his promotion of our Championships in US over the last few years. This was one of the most closely contested championship matches we have had. The American shooters added a new dimension to the match and gave George Hamilton some company from home. There were quite a few lanes where the terrain dictated a sitting shot and the leaning shots from the standing position proved more difficult than many expected. I didn t shoot as well as I wanted to, but came away with the satisfaction that I had participated in a great match, enjoyed good company and made some new friends. I can t ask for more than that. We also had a bit of a challenge for our setup, apparently the Range master had just got back from vacation, and had mistakenly double booked our space with a police qualifying falling plate course, reducing our space down somewhat - but on the brighter side, we still managed to set up a thirty two shot course, and there was very little walking from one lane to the next! The odd thing that happened at the match was the shoot-off for open class. Peter wasn t very keen on getting his gear back out shoot it, so Ron offered to take his place, as he had shot the same score (but in Spring class!) Scott said ok, and they both took two shots at the fifty-one yard target, both missed in the first time around, but Ron hit it once in the second attempt, thereby awarding Peter with first place in open class! New shooter Mike had a shoot-off against George using the same target for spring gun class, interestingly enough, both using 6-18 Bushnell scopes, both got the second highest score of the day, oh and George used his.22! 14 2002 Washington State Championships Hello everyone, This was the second year that our club has hosted the Washington State Championships and it almost doubled in size over last year. We all are very excited about this. I was elated to hear (and see on the forum) so many wonderful comments about our club, facility, and members. These comments keep our spirits up and gives us our 'pay' for the hours of work that goes into running a match.we are all still talking about Dee the Chef Shuster, who put on a great teryaki chicken BBQ. Well worth the price of admission. I would like to give thanks to all the competitors that shot in our match. We had three shooters from California (Alan Otsuka, Bob Winer and Scott Winslow) one from Oregon (Ray Geren) one from the dry half of our state (Dottie Berry) as well as Joe Korick from the bottom of our state. In addition to these shooters we had a nice group of more local people some of whom were first time shooters that had such a great time that they are going to return as regulars to our club. So a big group hug and thank you to all of the people that attended our match. The breakdown was as follows... 15 AA Field Target Match August 17, 2002 Back with a vengeance! by Kevin Allen The hard work behind us, it was time to get back down to knocking over some critters. The pine bark beetles that plagued our range are now a thing of the past and the wrath of the clear cutting operation to get rid of them was wholesale devastation of the trees and landscape where we shoot. Only one thing left to do in a situation like that. Grab your work boots and bring a shovel! The new chipper has made piles of sawdust amongst the downed trees and scrub. We are finding plenty of new places to hide our targets and the matches are underway once again. Ken Hughes has been on fire! We re shooting in the wind again, and it s showing off his prowess to it s best degree. While all of us seems to be settling in Ken is ready and raring to go showing us how it s done. Great work Ken! The smiles were on everyone s faces welcoming back friends and neighbors like Robert Crocker and Roz Sumpter. Dave Simpson made it out and brought a new friend, Eddie Faulkner, that we hope to be seeing much more of in the near future. We hope to welcome back more of our neighbors in the coming months as things gear up for the Nationals in October. If you have been wanting to try us out or are an old face that has been absent recently, come on out! We d love to have you. +++ Open Class Score Name Rifle Optics Pellet 1st 41 Ken Hughes Air Arms NJR-100 Short 2nd 37 Kevin Allen Air Arms NJR-100 Long Weaver T36 36x Nightforce FT 36x JSB Exact 8.4gr JSB Exact 8.4gr 2nd 37 Tommy Garland Air Arms Pro Target Burris 8-32x Premier 10.5gr 4th 36 Doug Vinson Air Arms Pro Target Ti Nightforce 8-40x Premier 10.5gr 5th 33 Robert Crocker Daystate CR-X Nightforce FT 36x Premier 10.5gr 6th 25 Dave Simpson Steyr ZM LG100 Leupold 18-34x Premier 10.5gr 7th 17 Eddie Faulkner Daystate Huntsman MKII Burris 8-32x Premier 10.5gr Piston Class Score Name Rifle Optics Pellet 1st 21 Roz Sumpter Whiscomb LW50 Burris 8-32x Premier 7.9gr 2nd 17 Joel Hansel Air Arms TX-200SR Burris 8-32x Premier 7.9gr International Class Score Name Rifle Optics Pellet 1st 41 Ken Hughes Air Arms NJR-100 Short 2nd 37 Kevin Allen Air Arms NJR-100 Long Weaver T36 36x Nightforce FT 36x JSB Exact 8.4gr JSB Exact 8.4gr September
