First, let me say that I purchased a [competitor s] press a while back and have had nothing but problems. These are not huge problems, but a problem is a problem is a problem. Huh, it is at the factory as I write this letter. Honestly, I have spent a bunch of money on that press: dies, shellplates and other items and I am over it. I was so frustrated I decided to break down and get a Dillon. Over the years of reloading I have always used singlestage presses. Here lately, I have been needing to upgrade to a progressive. I have always been told, Get a Dillon, spend the money, you won t regret it. Well, you work with what you have, money wise and you buy what you can afford. Bunk! After the headaches, downtime and sheer frustration, the additional cost for a Dillon is chicken feed. I am an old welder/fabricator/machinist and I know QUALITY when I see it. The 550B is Top Notch. The parts all fit together great. It is a tight machine and very, very smooth. The handle and linkage are tight and fit together well. Overall, I am very impressed with the machine. I was not disappointed. Ruger ( has brought back their.22 Charger pistol in both takedown and one-piece configurations. Both feature a standard A2-style grip that can be changed for your favorite MSR grip. Ruger was also showing a new.22 Bearcat with sights that are now fully adjustable. This slick little kit gun is available in stainless or blue. Ruger s GP100 Match Champion, introduced last year, is now available with an adjustable rear sight. For the firearms fashionistas, there was a new 22/45 Lite, with a cutaway Electric Blue barrel and upper, with a top rail in addition to adjustable sights and, of course, the barrel was threaded. European American Armory ( was showing a polymer Witness 1911, a very handsomely done iteration of the classic design, with an ambi safety and an accessory rail. Over at the SIG Sauer booth ( I spotted their new P220 10mm pistol, available in both stainless and Nitron finishes. With an 8-round magazine, this is one very serious piece of heavy ordnance for hunting or self-defense. At one point, I stopped back at the Dillon booth, and Mark Pixler told me, You definitely want to get over to the Kingston Armory booth

Needless to say, I moved out smartly and, sure enough, there were some beautifully crafted replications of these classics, with carefully disguised Ruger 10/22 actions and 10-round rotary magazines. I m told that these recreations are just a bit lighter than the originals, but not noticeably so. I m a sucker for.22s, and the budget will suffer! Speaking of classics, MKS Supply ( was showing exact recreations of the WWII Inland M1 and M1A1.30 caliber Carbines. These are beautifully made and even reproduce the original production s cartouche marks in the wood. They were also showing a 1911A1 Government Model, authentic right down to the lanyard loop and brown-checkered plastic grip panels. In the wheelgun spectrum, I spotted a very pretty Damascus-pattern Baron Custom-decorated.22 Magnum at the North American Arms booth ( And, great news for the budget-minded you can now own Korth s ( new 9mm Para Sky Marshall revolver for right around $1,000, far less than previous Korth offerings. Dan Wesson, which is now owned by CZ ( is actually making a revolver, the Model 715 stainless.357 Magnum, once again. For you Tavor owners out there, the IWI booth ( was displaying some very handsomely appointed tactical nylon cases, with Molle pouches for extra mags, handguns, 9mm conversion kit, etc. The cases come in Continued on Page 36

44 44 CLASSIC FIREARMS: The Ruger.4 By John Marshall The.44 Magnum cartridge, when fired in a light carbine, is a marvelous short-range game-getter. It s especially effective on deer, black bear, feral hogs and the javelina of the Southwest. However, as I can personally attest, firing a light lever action or single shot rifle in that caliber will leave you with a bruised shoulder that you ll feel for weeks. Way back in 1960, however, Bill Ruger, working closely with famed designer Harry Sefried, found the solution: a.44 Magnum self-loader in which the action absorbed much of the recoil, making it more comfortable to fire and offering quick follow-up shots. Weighing in at 5 pounds and 12 ounces, it was handy to pack and quick to bring into action. Although most folks today are not aware of it, this was only the first of two distinct models that had quite different actions. The first model [top photo] was introduced in this manner: America s newest game rifle Proven on the plains of Africa, the RUGER Deerstalker carbine is a technological breakthrough for the benefit of American sportsmen proven not only on Whitetails in North America, but on Leopard, Hyena, Wart Hog, Topi and many other species in Africa developed to provide the sportsman with the best possible rifle for hunting deer and other medium-sized game in brush country. Bill Ruger did indeed personally test this gun on a variety of African game, including killing a leopard with one shot at 100 yards. Accounts and photos were extensively used in Ruger advertising. The carbine measured 36-3/4 overall. The 18-1/4 barrel (later lengthened to 18-1/2 ) had 12 rifling grooves with a 1 turn in 38 twist. The receiver was machined from chrome-molybdenum steel. The tubular magazine held four rounds, and was filled through an opening in the bottom of the receiver, just forward of the trigger guard. It used a short-stroke piston to drive an internal slide that rotated the bolt to unlock the breech from the receiver. The bolt remained open after the last shot was fired, and could be released with a latch ahead of the trigger guard. There was a cross-bolt safety in front of the trigger that locked both the sear and the internal hammer. Lyman front and rear sights were standard, and the top of the receiver was drilled and tapped to accept Weavertype scope mounts. The standard carbine stock was oil-finished American walnut. International (full length) and Sporter style stocks were offered as options. Both of these had sling swivels and pistol grip caps, and were checkered at the wrist and forend. Retail prices in the 1960 catalog were $108 for the standard, $118 for the sporter, and $128 for the international model. The guns themselves began to be distributed in September It s worth noting that a virtual lookalike clone of this carbine in.22 Long Rifle caliber was offered in 1964, the Ruger 10/22 carbine, which continues in Ruger s lineup to this day. The initial name Deerstalker was not used on the carbine for long. It seems that the Ithaca Gun Company had a Deerslayer shotgun, and according to Ruger, to avoid any hard feelings, we changed our rifle s name to simply the Ruger 44 Carbine. The carbine proved to be nearly indestructible, built like a tank in the tradition of most Ruger guns. Two samples were sent to the H.P. White Laboratory in Maryland to see what it would take to blow them up. Even with a full case of fast-burning Bullseye powder, generating over 100,000 pounds per square inch of pressure, the guns held together, although a ring in the chamber was generated. One caution had to be observed in the use of the guns; only jacketed bullets were recommend-

45 4 Magnum Semiauto Carbines 45 These interesting rifles have now become classics for which a modern-day equivalent does not currently exist. ed. Shaved lead from lead bullets would foul the gas port, leading to malfunctions that would be very difficult to remedy. This first Ruger carbine was made through 1985, with a production total of over 250,000. A final 25th anniversary model was made, with a Ruger phoenix medal in the stock. The gun was finally dropped from the Ruger lineup due to increased production costs. This left a gap in the autoloading.44 niche for 15 years, when in 2000, the company launched the second version [bottom photo] of the genre, the Deerfield.44 Magnum semiauto carbine. Capitalizing on its experience with the successful Mini carbines, Ruger decided to apply the strong and simple M1 carbine-style action to work with the.44 Magnum cartridge. Adapting the action of the Mini-14 to.44 Magnum was simple enough, but inasmuch as the.44 is a rimmed cartridge, a box-magazine feed system was out of the question. The rims would catch on each other as they moved upward and forward in a conventional box magazine. The answer was right there in front of them the rotary magazine of the 10/22 carbine (itself based on the Savage Model 99 rifle) was made specifically to deal with rimmed cartridge feeding. The decision was made to craft a similar four-shot rotary mag in.44 Magnum. This was done. It was discovered that two problems existed with the action. First, the exposed operating rod s movement could be restricted with the support hand on the forend. This problem was solved with a black polymer covering shield which also serves as a top handguard. A Ruger crest is molded into it. Secondly, because the M1-type action ejects empty cartridges upward, a scope mounted over the action would be hit repeatedly by the ejected brass. The solution here was a leather scope protector which was provided with each rifle. It could be fitted around the scope turrets to protect them from the impact of the brass. This was a bit less than elegant, but it worked with most scopes. The action does not lock back after the last round is fired, but a pin in the bolt handle like that on the military M1 carbine can be pushed down when the bolt is retracted to keep it there. A crossbolt safety nearly identical to the original is utilized. The Deerfield 99/44 carbine resembles the original carbine in general configuration, but measures a full 37 inches, just 1/4 longer. The stock, no longer having to conceal a tubular magazine, is somewhat slimmer. The standard carbine configuration includes front and rear quick-release sling swivel mounts. A folding aperture rear sight mounted closer to the eye on the rear of the receiver is provided, and can be removed when a scope is mounted. As with the original carbine, optional International and Sporter stock configurations were available. This newer gun weighs 6 pounds and 3 ounces, a bit heavier than the original. It has an 18-1/2 barrel with a 1:20 twist, and six-groove rifling versus the old 12-groove type. Ruger scope rings and one magazine were included with each rifle when new, and the introductory retail list price was $649. This carbine proved to be quite accurate, with one-inch 50-yard three-shot groups being common with most ammunition. Within 100 yards, like its predecessor, it s a very handy and effective medium game dropper. This gun could have had an alter ego as an effective defense carbine if a high-capacity magazine had ever been designed for it, perhaps similar to the current Ruger BX-25.22LR mag that works so well in the 10/22 carbine. Sadly, that possibility was never explored, and with lackluster sales, the Deerfield 99/44 passed into history in Production figures are sketchy, but it appears that roughly over 18,000 of these guns were manufactured. Today, both Ruger.44 Magnum autoloading carbines are experiencing resurging demand on the collector market, and with those who would find them ideal for hunting in the brush. They are becoming a challenge to find, as their owners tend to hang onto them. As new in-the-box examples have become quite pricey lately when rarely found. These interesting rifles have now become classics for which a modern-day equivalent does not currently exist. D P

48 Kenda Lenseigne Irony in Motion By Robin Taylor, Photo by Douglas Smith, WYSIWIG Photography All the shooting sports have unusual athletes. Call them champions, or even stars. Among stars you find greats that do more than win. They change the sport. Kenda Lenseigne grew beyond star status some time ago, becoming part of the cultural bedrock of mounted shooting. In the course of winning multiple titles on the national and world stage, Kenda transformed the guns, the gear, even the saddles used by the current generation of riders and shooters. If you d have asked me 16 years ago if I thought I could make a career out of this I wouldn t have said yes, says Kenda. Who would have known you could do something you love so much and make a living at it? Today Kenda is both making a living and living a message of responsible firearm use that opens doors worldwide. As a trainer, shooter, rider, and ambassador for the shooting sports, there is a lot to be said for Kenda Lenseigne. She s had an amazing impact on the mounted shooting world, says Ken Amorosano, former publisher of Western Shooting Horse, and current publisher of Cowgirl and True West. She became a role model for hundreds of girls that wanted to be just like her, and she s never let them down. I caught up with Kenda at her New River, Arizona, home, freshly returned from an American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) night event in Scottsdale (the Sun Circuit Championship). Like most people, I d always assumed that mounted shooting was primarily regulated by SASS the major governing body for cowboy-style events. Not true! Mounted shooters and SASS ground shooters have very different needs, and when Kenda got started shooting in 1998, the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) had just branched out from SASS. Since then, the two organizations have followed different roads. The most visible difference being CMSA s decision to eliminate SASS long-standing costume requirements. Changing the required dress code changed everything, says Kenda. That one decision opened up the sport to the broader equestrian sports world, says Kenda. The result was a modern rodeo event akin to barrel racing with guns. Later this year Kenda will make her fourth trip to France to serve as an ambassador/trainer for the growing community of western shooting enthusiasts there.

49 European mounted fans are overcoming arduous gun control requirements using capand-ball revolvers if they have to in order to shoot from horseback. Some European riders are bringing their dream to learn all there is to know about the mounted shooting and cowboy lifestyle all the way to the United States to compete. With the AQHA now recognizing mounted shooting as an official event, mounted shooting s future appears very bright. New Sport = New Gear Back in the late 1990s, Kenda and her fellow riders had no gear that really worked for mounted shooting. Some things could be adapted (barrel racing saddles, for example), but most of the gun stuff was just wrong. Imagine trying to re-holster a SAA one-handed using a period-correct slim jim holster at full gallop. It s not quite like threading a needle, but you get the idea. We had people wearing their rigs in between stages, with water bottles stuffed in their holsters to get them to stay open, says Kenda. And I was one of them! Problem became opportunity when Kenda met Safariland s Scott Carnahan at NRA s Bianchi Cup in Colombia, Missouri. The holster innovations that practical shooters like Carnahan take for granted low-cut fronts for faster draws, laminated holster materials, adjustable draw tension all that was unknown to the mounted community. Carnahan connected Kenda with his design staff, and the Bianchi Cowboy line has offered Kenda Lenseigne signature holsters ever since. Kenda s line takes advantage of the technology that Safariland is known for, but holds the standard of a traditional look and feel. Its like an old model car with a new engine. The same story applies to handguns. When you look at the products I ve been involved in helping develop, people essentially are benefiting from my decade of learning the hard way, laughed Kenda. As Kenda explained, it s difficult to shoot a standard Peacemaker well right out of the box due to the stiff hammer action. Competitive shooters immediately lighten the hammers. When I first started in the sport, I had heard about the legendary Bob Munden being the go-to gunsmith, so I sent him my guns. When I got them back, $300 per gun later, I had hair triggers which is absolutely NOT what you want for mounted. Once Kenda found the right gunsmiths, her mounted guns began to evolve. The original hammer spur on the old Peacemaker tends to open your grip when you re shooting one-handed, Kenda explained. So, we took that hammer spur and made it lower and wider for quicker access. Today Uberti firearms offers the Kenda Lenseigne signature line as a package racegun for mounted shooting. They sell well to mounted 49 shooters, and to ground shooters that compete in SASS events. Back in the (Circle Y) Saddle Certain brands have become household words among horse people in the United States. One of the largest is Circle Y Saddles. In January of 09 Circle Y contacted me to design a saddle for them, saying, We want to be the first in the industry that builds a saddle specifically for your sport. Kenda was shocked. What an honor! This is the saddle brand that practically EVERYBODY grew up riding, or at least wanting to ride. Basically, if you own a horse, you know Circle Y. Kenda had ridden many different disciplines over the years, so she had a lot to say. They sent out their designer to visit with me, and we sat down with a yellow pad. We sketched out what I thought would be a good design for the sport: a forward-tilted horn to allow clearance for your gun leather, free moving stirrups, and a deep seat to hold you in while in motion. A contract to ride for Circle Y developed, and things got very serious. They hand-delivered the prototype to one of the CMSA majors in Arizona. They put it on my horse, did a photo shoot, then gave me the option to ride it in the upcoming event, or ride my regular saddle. As any sponsored competitor knows, running brand-new gear at an important match invites disaster. If it works, you re a hero. If it fails, you damage yourself and the brand. It s a high-stakes hero or zero gamble. I warmed up my horse in the saddle for about 45 minutes, liked it, and decided the time was right to believe in my design and go for it. Kenda set the world record on her first pass, and her saddle design went hero instantly. The design was a hit from day one, we ve only made some minor changes since then. Different grades of leather, etc, she says. Not every project has worked out so well, but as she ll tell you You can t excel unless you fail a time or two and learn from your experiences. The Life Kenda s life involves many pieces. She describes herself as horse-heavy at the moment with six of her own quarter horses in varying stages of training, plus several more that she s training for customers. As you might imagine, training a horse to deal with a gunshot fired near its head isn t easy and would-be competitive riders are more than willing to pay her for her help. Kenda s involved with every piece of the puzzle, firing.22 blanks from horseback on her home range, and taking horses to the Ben Avery complex to shoot the louder.45s. In an internet age, Kenda s an irony in motion. She s competing, training, traveling the world, designing, and doing media appearances all because of her skill with a horse and a gun. D P

The name Ken Hackathorn needs no introduction to those heavily involved in the firearms training community, either as instructors or students. A former Green Beret and current cop, he s also been one of our most well-known and wellrespected firearms trainers for the past 30 years. Recently he commented in an online article, Of the vast number of people that carry guns for self defense, only a very small number are competent with them I am often asked to provide a skill check or test for those that take their combat marksmanship seriously I offer the following Wizard Drill. It is very simple, requires only five rounds of ammo, and can be shot on any range that allows work from the holster. Okay, you show me a drill put forth by a wellknown instructor to be considered competent with the concealed carry handgun; I ll show you a drill I had to try. Thus I reposed to the range with my everyday carry gun and carry gear. The gun was a Gen-3 Glock 17, mildly customized; the holster was a straight drop Blade-Tech Standard Belt Holster; ammo was Winchester 127-gr. SXT +P+; the concealing garment was a Concealed Carry Clothiers Double Action vest. Hackathorn s Wizard Drill uses a single USPSA or IDPA target with a 4 circle centered in the target s head. The handgun must be carried concealed; ammo is what you normally carry. There are four strings to the Wizard Drill, the first three take one round each, the last one takes two, for a total of five rounds. Allowable time for each of the four strings is a putative 2.5 seconds per, but in actuality it s 2.7 seconds. Hackathorn suggests setting the par time on your timer at 2.5 seconds, but he actually allows up to 2.7 seconds to complete each string since that is about the length of the buzzer on most timers. If pocket carrying, you may start with your hand on the gun in the pocket. Otherwise, hands begin hanging normally at sides, off the gun. When you re done, you should have three hits in the head and two in the body. Any miss of the entire target is an automatic fail. You can drop two points and still pass the test, any more than that is also a fail. Hits inside the 4 head circle or cutting the line are considered down zero points, outside the circle but inside the head perforation is down one point per. For the body shots, whether you re using the IDPA or USPSA target, you score it like an IDPA target, i.e. a hit in the target s highest scoring area, either the IDPA -0 circle or USPSA A-zone is down zero points, a hit in the IDPA center mass -1 zone or USPSA target s C-zone is down one point, a hit in the IDPA peripheral hits -3 zone or USPSA target s D-zone is down three points. In other words, anything outside the C- zone/-1 zone, you automatically fail. There is no Major/Minor scoring; every hit counts the same no matter what caliber inflicted it. Okay, let me dispel the suspense. Did I pass the Wizard Drill? Yes, I did. However, it was not the slam-dunk I thought it would be. It actually took me three tries to get it. The first run, I stopped partway through because I missed a head shot. Second run, my times were good but I dropped three points. Third time was the charm, made the times and only dropped two points. Here are the four strings of the Wizard Drill, and the times I posted on my passing run: String 1: Start at three (3) yards. On signal, draw and fire one (1) head shot master hand only. My time: 1.94 seconds. String 2: Five (5) yards. On signal, draw and fire one (1) head shot. On this string, and every other string until the end of the test, you may place both

Thomas first pass of the Wizard Drill on the USPSA target would have been a fail if he d been using an IDPA target, turning his down two into a down four. This pass, dropping only one point off possible, would still have been down only one point even on an IDPA target. The third head shot is hiding inside the line of the head circle at about five o clock. hands on the gun. My time: 1.99 seconds. String 3: Seven (7) yards. On signal, draw and fire one (1) head shot. My time: 1.91 seconds. String 4: Ten (10) yards. Draw and fire two (2) body shots. My time: 2.52 seconds. You will find in this article a photo of my resulting target. Am I happy with my performance on this run? I am not. I used a USPSA target because that was the only clean target I had on hand. If I d been using an IDPA target, one of my body shots, and quite possibly both, would have been outside the -0 circle, which would have given me four points down and a fail. When I showed up at the range, to be brutally honest, it had been about a month and a half since I had been able to live fire, and during that time frame I also sloughed off on my dry fire. It showed in a serious anticipation-of-recoil issue that pulled shots low. Also, even though we technically get a max of 2.70 seconds to complete each string, I really didn t like that it took me over 2.50 seconds for the 10-yard work. Well, there was no way my ego could handle that. It might be (barely) worth mentioning that, after passing the Wizard Drill the first time, I did some bench rest shooting and found that the sights on the gun needed to be adjusted seriously to the right. And, and, the sun was in my eyes (on the indoor range). And if you don t like those excuses I have others! The pieces of white tape tell the tale (check out the second target photo), it took me some practice to turn in a run I could live with. And Winchester 127-gr. SXT +P+ doesn t just grow on trees, you know. Talk about motivation to get it right in fairly short order; pulling the trigger on your dwindling store of that stuff will do it. Pass was not good enough. Pass if this was an IDPA target was good enough. My good enough run showed times of 2.15, 2.16, 2.03 and 2.57 seconds, and only dropped one point and that would have been only one point even if I d been shooting on an IDPA target. I m still not thrilled about my time on String 4, but at least my accuracy wasn t completely wretched. I found it very interesting that I was consistently faster at seven yards than I was at five. You d think it would be the other way around. The only way I can explain this is that I simply do so much of my shooting practice at seven yards. So I guess that, according to the results of the Wizard Drill, I am indeed competent to carry a gun for self-defense. Though I did pass the Wizard Drill in short order, the truth is this test would be pretty brutal for most people. Also I will say, there is something to be said for carrying a real gun like my Glock 17. As Hackathorn commented, Don t be surprised to find that those little 2 Airweight.38 Special revolvers and pocket.380 autos are nearly impossible to pass this drill with. In police work we call this a clue. I have never really bought into the argument, which you see repeated over and over again in so many gun articles when talking about the bitty shootin irons, For the vast majority of selfdefense encounters, this gun s [teeny sights, crappy trigger pulls, wimpy cartridge, low capacity, two-finger grip surface] should be perfectly adequate. It s like people think their selfdefense emergency is going to somehow magically build itself around the gun they re carrying. I ve always figured the self-defense emergency will be whatever it is, and if I m not carrying enough gun to deal with the problem, well, that s too bad for me. That s why you ll never see me carrying one of the tiny.38s/.380s as my only gun, and my primary carry gun tends to be a bit larger than most folks. Duane s website is Self-Defense-Handguns.com. D P

By Brian Dervin Dillon, Ph.D. George Armstrong Custer ( ) owned several Remington Rolling Block rifles in different calibers. His favorite was the buffalo gun he took on his Yellowstone expedition of Custer appears with this rifle in several photos, in some alongside his Indian scouts, in others with game he killed with it (Figure 1). This Rolling Block is thought by most scholars to have been with him at the Little Bighorn when he was killed. Arguments about the precise spot where Custer fell have, for decades, depended upon the archaeological presence or absence of fired casings from this rifle, for these were unlike the smaller, standard issue, carbine rounds fired by his troopers. The Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapahoe won the battle on June 25, 1876, but had already lost the larger war: their on the hoof food supply was fast disappearing to swarms of buffalo hunters. On that day Custer s Rolling Block rifle became an Indian trophy. Its whereabouts have been unknown for the past 140 years. Our own Remington Rolling Block buffalo gun (Figure 2) occupied a place of honor up on the wall above the dining table, alongside other rifles and carbines, some older, some younger. Grandpa Dillon, a U.S. Army mustang, avid gun collector and teetotaler, bought the monster from the Gold Dust Saloon in Sausalito, California, in January 1920, shortly before prohibition forced its closure. For many years the rifle resided over the bar of that saloon. Its neighbor was a Spencer Carbine also brought home to the Dillon house (Blue Press No. 273). Both were potent reminders of the historical forces that had moved our forbears westwards across the American continent. The Gold Dust Saloon was just outside the Fort Baker military reservation, and catered to offduty soldiers. Grandpa Dillon was familiar with it from many visits as Sergeant of the Guard, beginning in 1902, while removing obstreperous, inebriated, enlisted patrons. How the old rifle came to be there remains a mystery. Over a 30-year period more than a million Remington Rolling Blocks were made in just about every caliber under the sun. More of these singleshot rifles were shipped to Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America than were ever sold at home. Although they could be had in as fancy a grade as any customer desired, at many times the

79 the Buffalo Gun 79 cost of the basic rifle, most guns sold both domestically and abroad were plain Jane, no-frills versions. Remington began chambering its rifles in the Government centerfire cartridge for the Army and Navy as early as The Dillon family gun, an octagon-barreled variant with fixed rear sight and very low serial number, was one of the first offered to civilians in By 1872, the company was advertising a round-barreled variant as its Government Buffalo Rifle capitalizing on the popularity of the earlier version. The Dillon family rolling block is a very early Model No.1 with straight bar extractor, and faint 50 caliber marking stamped on its barrel s underside. After a few years of use as a buffalo gun in the early 1870s, it passed into the possession of a Plains Indian. At some point, its new owner s horse rolled over, snapping the Remington s stock in half just behind its receiver. The gun was repaired, Plains Indian fashion, with strips cut from tin cans with a hunting knife, hammered on with small brads. Afterwards the stock was tightly wrapped with a single, very long, green buffalo rawhide thong and soaked in water, forcing it to contract, tightening and hardening it like iron. The premier buffalo gun just before the Civil War was the Sharps, beautifully made and supremely accurate. A percussion breech-loader employing a linen cartridge, it was much faster to reload than any contemporary muzzle-loader. And, if you ran out of its special cartridges, in a pinch you could still roll your own, wrapping homemade rounds with newspaper. During the Civil War tens of thousands of.52 caliber Sharps carbines, but many fewer rifles, were used by Union troops. Most of the Sharps in the hands of buffalo hunters immediately after the Civil War were these same.52 percussion guns, now sold as Army surplus. Meanwhile, the.50 Government had become the first U.S. Army centerfire rifle cartridge, rendering the larger caliber muzzle-loaders used by both sides during the Civil War obsolete. The Union experiment with rimfires a couple thousand.44 Henrys, but more than 80,000 big-bore Spencers, both rifles and carbines, as well as a few old percussion Sharps carbines re-chambered for metallic cartridges had convinced the ordnance department that the finicky, low-powered rimfires had to be superseded by centerfire cartridge guns. As more of the longer-range and more reliable singleshot centerfires were produced, the old rimfire repeaters were phased out, although some special troops (Indian scouts) still carried them. The first all-new, post-civil War, civilian Sharps was the Model 1869, also the earliest purposely designed for metallic cartridges. These were offered in several calibers, the most popular the tried and true Government A few months later, Remington chambered its No.1 Rolling Block Rifle for the same round, standard in the U.S. Army-issue Springfield Trapdoors for the preceding four years. So, by 1870 three different single-shot breechloaders (Springfield, Sharps and Remington) were chambered for the same Government round. Of the three, the Remington Rolling Block became the most common buffalo gun. It was simple, easy to make, and inexpensive to buy. By comparison, the Model 1869 Sharps was produced in much smaller numbers and was costly. Foreign governments and journeyman market hunters alike found it too expensive and bought the Remington instead. The Rolling Block was joined, after 1873, by large numbers of Army surplus Springfield Trapdoors, made obsolete by the new, round. From the mid-1870s onwards, as the herds dwindled, these surplus Springfields became the poor man s buffalo gun. In 1874, the Sharps concern was reorganized, relocated, and renamed the Sharps Rifle Company. It then brought out its most famous rifle, the Model 1874, still in small numbers compared to the many thousands of Remingtons produced. The Sharps cartridge appeared in 1872, an obvious attempt to outdo the.50-70, now six years old. But few guns were chambered for the until the new model Sharps became available two years later. The used a 2-1/2 inch casing, compared to the shorter, 1-3/4 inch case of the The later Sharps and rounds used the same case, simply increasing the charge while lightening the bullet. These were the rounds frequently identified by modern writers as fired in Big Fifty Buffalo Guns despite the fact that very few were ever actually used for buffalo hunting. Even as these fancy rifles began to appear in Wild West shows east of the Mississippi, they remained too costly for most workaday buffalo hunters on the plains. The Sharps.50-90, or -110 cartridges were hard to find, and pro-

80 80 hibitively expensive to shoot, so it was the earliest buffalo cartridge, the Government, that killed the greatest number of woolies out on the Plains. Only a few behemoths went down to the exotic, Johnny-come-lately, Big Fifty Sharps rounds. Using the costly 1874 Sharps rifles with their rare and expensive ammunition at long-distance shooting competitions in New Jersey did not make them buffalo guns. Nor were those much later rifles, chambered for exotic, long-range cartridges towards the end of the 1880s buffalo guns either, for these appeared only after the great herds had already been wiped out. The Sharps, instead, became the favorite of well-heeled competitive shooters back East, only infrequently fired by such greenhorns during short-term junkets out west. For every Philadelphia rube that stuck a hundred-dollar Sharps target rifle out the window of a slow-moving train, 50 to 100 professional buffalo hunters were each taking down hundreds of the big animals, day after day, with ten-dollar surplus Springfields, or newer, twenty-five-dollar, Remingtons. The more pedestrian, and earlier, Sharps Model buffalo gun shot the same cheap, plentiful, ammo as the Remingtons and Springfields, yet market hunters could buy three brandnew rolling blocks for the price of a single Sharps, or, once the Army surplus guns became available, up to ten used Springfields for what the new Sharps cost. They did exactly that. More importantly, the thousands of rounds of obsolete government surplus ammo fired every day, day after day, by professional buffalo hunters only cost pennies compared to the expensive, dedicated, big 50 Sharps rounds expended only occasionally by wealthy sportsmen. The last buffalo hunters on the plains were the also the first, the American Indians. No reservation Indian could have afforded expensive big fifty Sharps ammunition, but rounds were cheap, plentiful, and still available long after they had been made obsolete by the Fifty years after Grandpa Dillon s buffalo gun became a Plains Indian rifle, Bannerman s was still selling Army surplus Government ammunition for $2.50 per 100 rounds or $25.00 per thousand. In 1927 they still came in the original U.S. Army surplus wooden cases of 1,000 rounds. The ancient ammunition remained in stock as late as More than half a century ago, in my California grammar school, we studied American history. The old buffalo gun had a hard life, to judge by the battering on its muzzle. still on gold prospecting in places locally familiar to us kids. When it came time for third grade show and tell, most boys brought in autographed baseballs, and mumbled something incomprehensible about batting averages. No baseballs for me; I lugged Grandpa Dillon s.50 Caliber Remington Rolling Block buffalo gun to class instead. I talked for twenty minutes about the westward movement of the 19th century, buffalo hunting on the Plains, and the Transcontinental Railroad. My 1870 buffalo gun was visible proof of the story I was spinning. I told the class that by the early 1880s the buffalo, numbering millions before the Civil War, had been almost completely wiped out. I explained that hunting the great northern and southern herds to the brink of extinction was no accident, but by the 1870s was strategic American military policy to end the long, drawn-out, Indian Wars. If the Plains tribes were starved out, they would have to stop fighting. My show and tell episode ended with George A. Custer dead at the Little Bighorn in 1876, killed beside his own Remington Rolling Block, just like the one I was holding. His rifle, again just like mine, then became an Indian gun. My buffalo gun was the ice-breaker. I later took other guns to school for show and tell, as props for subsequent lectures on the Civil War, the California Gold Rush, and so forth and so on. These became so routine that other kids sometimes asked, What, no gun today? when I showed up on the playground without one. Long ago and far away, as an 8-year old, I took guns to school for show and tell. The guns carried into the classroom were universally recognized as historically important, icons of our shared experience way out west. The old Dillon family buffalo gun first went to school in It has continued to do so, off and on, ever since. It has appeared repeatedly as a teaching tool in my college-level American History, American Indian Ethnology and Historical Archaeology lectures. I have had the privilege, on several occasions over the past 40 years, of showing it to American Indians descended from warriors who fought at the Little Bighorn. The rifle, with its buffalo hunting and Custer connection, never fails to spark a reaction. My Indian friends always tell me that Custer had it coming, then, when they heft the old rifle, some say if only we had had something like this long before Custer came along. The old.50-caliber Remington Rolling Block also takes center stage in my NRA Reloading classes, then is put away long before any live ammunition gets made. So, for more than 50 years, the family buffalo gun has been going to school for show and tell. It always steals the show. D P
