Here's the latest dope on Spectra lines for Combat from Larry Wilks. This post was copied off Stunt Hangar. For 75MPH Speed Limit Combat you would use SPECTRA, POWER PRO, 100LB TEST, HI-VIS YELLOW, MADE IN THE USA. For 1/2A Combat use SPECTRA, POWER PRO, 30LB TEST, HI-VIS YELLOW, MADE IN THE USA. DO NOT buy anything made in CHINA. DO NOT use any other brand. Hi-Vis Yellow so you can see you lines on the ground. Make sure the contest allows the use of Specta Lines. We, on the East Coast, have been using this type of line for Speed Limit combat for more than 5 years. There is a very specific knot that we use. I will attach a visual picture of how to type this knot. Here is a link to Spectra Line 100 lb on Ebay. It shows the the box you would be looking for. DO NOT buy the line that say 25% lighter. Larry Wilks More good advice from Phil Cartier, also taken off Stunt Hangar. It's pretty important to stick with name brands and either Spectra or Dyneema (Europe). It's also called ultra high molecular weight gel spun polyethylene. It's a pretty fussy process because the temperature of the plastic is highly critical. The polyethylene is extruded through a very small die and stretched rapidly while it cools. The process makes the long chains of the polyethylene (high molecular weight means long, unbranched molecules, some 400,000 atoms long) line up very tightly packed and all forced very close to each other. The individual strands are gathered into bundles of several hundred fibers and the bundles are braided into the line. The result is a cable as strong and resistant to stretching as high strength steel, but only 1/7th the weight. Depending on how it's braided it may be slightly draggier than steel lines. On the plus side, besides being easy to tie to an exact length it won't tangle itself up, kink, or fatigue and break from vibration, or get damaged by a Big Foot tripping over your lines. Since it's made entirely of polyethylene, which melts at 275 F, the line shouldn't be exposed to temperatures much over 150degF, certainly not higher than degrees. When the strand gets too hot the molecules can lose their straight line orientation and get more loosely packed losing most of their strength. For similar reasons it's easy to make mistakes in manufacturing that give the same result- a stretchy, low strength strand that's useless for flying models. You won't know a low cost knock off will work until you get it home and test it with a pull tester. If a 60 ft. line stretches more than in with a 25lb. pull test it's too stretchy and is not the right material. Fly until you've had so much fun you fall over. Phil Cartier

Dallas Fall Finale 2016 Bill Bischoff This was one of the best contests I have ever been a part of. It had everything. Great weather-check! Great turnout-check! Great competitioncheck! We had light winds and temperatures in the 70's. We had people from Texas, Kansas, Georgia, Charlie Johnson came in from California, and Paul Gibeault and Les Akre even came down from Alberta Canada! We had five events with five different winners. We literally finshed up at sunset. It was a beautiful thing. We ran the events in order of most to least demanding for the pilots. This, coupled with the mild weather, allowed the busy pilots to make it through the entire day. Quickie Rat was first, with six entries. Paul Gibeault was top qualifier, followed closely by Bill Lee and Les Akre. Since Les and Paul (the Les Paul team for you guitar players) were working together and both made the finals, Bill Bischoff stepped in to fly for Les, and Mike Greb pitted for Paul. Les took the checkered flag with a 6:13. Super slow rat was next with six entries. The Les Paul team flew Bill Bischoff's spare model, powered by Les Akre's Brodak 25. In one heat, the Lee airplane got together with the Barnes airplane. One ran out of fuel just as the other was taking off, and they both tried to occupy the same airspace. We all know how that works out! Bill Bischoff had a clean race to record a 5:14 for the win. Twelve contestants entered Sportsman Goodyear. Paul Gibeault borrowed an airplane and engine from Bill Bischoff, and showed his good manners by letting Bill beat him by a second. Charlie Johnson pitted for his former California cohort Allen Deveuve. Les Akre had a Norvel BigMig 15 powered Stinger that started well and was plenty fast. Unfortunately, Les had to pull out of the final when the Norvel's connecting rod galled on the crank pin. Mike Greb gave Bill Lee a good run for his money, but Bill prevailed with an excellent 8:13. The four Fox/ Goldberg contestants elected to just fly the 140 lap finals. Patrick Hempel won with a sub-10 minute time. The Barnes entry hadn't made their last pitstop by the end of 140 laps, and had to make 18 extra laps. Otherwise, their time would have obviously been much better. Dale retired at his last pit stop, and Melvin was a no-start. Mouse had nine entries, and some close racing. Unfortunately, we had a bit of an incident in the final. I was flying for Melvin, and we were on the ground pitting. Paul was flying for Les, and came in for a pit. Even though Melvin's wingtip was down and the lines were on the ground, Paul snagged on our lines. As event director, my judgement was that no one was at fault, and I simply let the race continue. Reviewing the rules later, I found that Les and Melvin should have been given a refly. This was my mistake, and I apologize to Les and Melvin. I hope it didn't tarnish the overall experience for either of them. And now, the gory details... There's more! There was also some speed and a few carrier flights. If people (including me) weren't so used up from racing on Saturday, there would have been more carrier flights on Sunday. Perhaps we need to think about changing this. In speed, Paul Gibeault's Formula 40 suffered a pushrod failure. The airplane hit the ground at a shallow angle, and broke off the rear of the fuselage including the tail. The rest of the model continued to fly a couple more level laps before finally hitting the ground. Paul actually seemed more concerned about finding his wheel than losing his model. 10 A message from National Control Line Racing President Bill Bischoff Hello, everyone. I am Bill Bischoff, the new President of NCLRA. The very first thing I must do is thank outgoing President Melvin Schuette for his service over the last four years. I'm sure there were some people who thought that by now the NCLRA would be dead and buried, and CL Racing at the NATS would only be a memory. Gee, not true, is it? For that I say thank you, Melvin. I'll bet you are probably wondering what my plans are as President of the NCLRA. Well, pull up a chair, and I'll tell you. My goal is simple enough: Make CL Racing grow. Notice I did not say to make the NCLRA grow. The NCLRA should exist to promote racing, not itself. Not that growth would be bad for NCLRA, it just shouldn't be the main objective. I think the best place to look for more racers is within the CL ranks. I'll bet there are current competitors as well as sport flyers who might like to try racing if they just knew a little more about it. This is where the NCLRA comes in. I would like to see the NCLRA web site be the Google of CL racing information. And I would like everyone to have full access. To make the NCLRA more accessible to everyone, we have already voted to make the membership FREE. To join, all you need to do is send an saying you'd like to join. As a member you will get the newsletter ed to you every other month, and you will get voting privileges in NCLRA matters. If you don't wish to join, you will still be able to view ALL issues of the newsletter on the web site, including the most recent issues. The only thing that will cost money will be a paper copy of the newsletter, which will be $10.00 per year. In addition, I will be working with our webmaster Bill Lee to have an easy to use member photo gallery, and to update and improve the plans and tech topic sections. I have already opened an NCLRA page in the Vendor's Corner section of Stunt Hangar to allow us to have a way to answer questions in a timely manner. It may take some time for these changes to be fully implemented and sorted out, so bear with us. I will also look for ways to increase NCLRA's visibility. I will ask Brodak Manufacturing to put a CL racing info page in the front of their catalog, and to include a racing handout in or with their racing kits. I will ask other special interest groups if they would like to swap ad space in their newsletters for ad space in our newsletter. Until next time...wish me luck! Bill's comments appeared in the August issue of the NCLRA Newsletter. -Ed

Paul Gibeault had the faster model and needed a bit of leverage to get by Bill Bischoff during a Quickie Rat heat at the Grand Finale in Dallas. Charles Barnes will soon get a double ruffle as both Gibeault and Bischoff whiz by. Big and tall helps, especially in Quickie Rat. Engines are mostly K&B 40's and limited to a.292 venturi and 10% nitro but fly in the low 100mph range. Oh, where's Paul?

Melvin Schuette makes a quick pitstop in Super Slow Rat. A hot glove is not permitted in the class, so a two-man pit crew saves time. The Brodak 25 is the most popular engine. Mike Greb is an excellent pilot and very quick pitman. Mike has an interesting technique where he puts the clip on the engine but doesn't actually hold the model. The clip flies off as the model takes off. The rest of us don't have the nerve to try it.

Check out the line spacing on the handles. Narrow spacing gives less sensitivity which is good for a racing class like AMA Mouse. Chuck Barnes refuels his Mouse. Of course his fuel contains 10% more nitro than yours. Paul Gibeault, Patrick Hempel, Steve Perkins, and Les Akre. Dave Layman holds his Hartfart Fast Jet. Two line Sport Jets run around 150mph, Fast Jets near 190mph using Monoline.

Spring Fling at the Barnstormers flying field near Johannesburg, South Africa. Wide variety of models including Combat, Racing, and Aerobatics. The field is at 5134 foot elevation. Jeff Dawson from San Antonio, Texas (3rd), Jeff Rein (Organizer), Don Jensen from Pomona, California (2nd), Ron Colombo from Dearborn, Michigan (1 st), and Mel Lyne from British Columbia (4th). This was the 38th running of the famed Bladder Grabber. Ron has won the Bladder Grabber three times as well as three wins in Fast Combat at the AMA Nationals. Everyone flies seven preliminary rounds then the top four go to a semi and final round. Ron had to fight his way through extra fly off matches to make the top four where he won both his semi match and the final with Don Jensen. Don had a 8-1 record and was second. 20 Here's a link to Henning Forbech's site: In the above picture you see Henning's Super Silencer that really makes a difference. This is a single chamber muffler 150mm by 34mm using the old rules 8m exit. Without a muffler the noise generated was 100.2dB(A) and with the muffler it was cut to 81.5dB(A). That's a 18.7dB reduction which is huge. You'll see a number of tests including one muffler that slips over your standard silencer and cuts noise to 79.0dB(A). On Henning's site you'll find everything from shutoffs to tests of four blade props. There's enough to keep you busy reading for a couple nights. Below is a pitbox that holds both your F2d models, better than getting trampled on the ground.
