WELCOME W elcome to the 39th edition of the annual Spring Desert 100 weekend. This event is being staged on the Wes King Ranch near Odessa, Washington. This is a working cattle ranch and as such, we must do our best to have as little impact as possible on this property. This is private property leased for the weekend from Wes King, owner of the ranch, to be used only for the weekend of April 4th and 5th. Only those signed up for an event may travel the grounds outside of the camping area. This property is not open for general play riding at any time. We all know how hard it is to find an area suitable for an event like the Desert 100. Please respect the wishes of the Stumpjumpers and Mr. King in regards to the property, so in future years we may have the possibility of continued use. Please stay on the marked course at all times. We would like to have as little impact on the land as possible. You may have questioned the Event Flyer in regards to bringing a clean motorcycle to the event. The reason is to mitigate the possibility of introducing unwanted weeds onto the property. I might point out that in Nevada a clean vehicle, whether bike or truck, is required because the BLM does not want plant seeds brought up from Arizona, California or Mexico introduced into their desert. As always, campfires are not allowed. Please clean up your camp and PIT area before leaving. The Stumpjumpers want you to have an enjoyable weekend, but please remember that we are guests here. Treat this property like it was your own front yard. You do not have to mow it, but leave it as you found it. Thank you and have a great time. LAND OWNERS RACE CHAIRMAN RACE CO-CHAIRMAN Wes King Loretta Weber Gary Schoessler James Brady Don Larson The Race Chairman, Jim Brady and Race Co-Chairman, Don Larson would like to acknowledge all of the hard work and time invested by the SJMC Members. It is the individual and team efforts put forth by our volunteers that make this event The Greatest Off-Road Event in the Northwest. FLATOUT APRIL 4TH & 5TH,

WHO ARE THE STUMPJUMPERS? We are a family oriented, off-road trail riding motorcycle club that loves to have fun. Promoting motorcycling and the safe use of motorcycles is one of our main goals. We were founded in 1967 and have one of the biggest driving forces in off road motorcycle events, in the Puget Sound area. We promote many of the most well known off road motorcycle events that enthusiasts look forward to each year. With the main purpose of the club to have fun, we also have club play days on a monthly basis. Each month one or more of our members put together an event exclusively for club members and friends. With fun in mind, these events range from trail rides, poker runs, camp outs, and occasionally a nice relaxing barbecue. Club Sponsored Events The World Famous Desert Since 1969 when this annual race began, the Desert 100, once known as Mattawa, has been the most prestigious off road race of the year. In additon to the race, the Desert 100 weekend features the following events: Family Poker Run - This is a fun event for the whole family and each year it gathers hundreds of riders just looking to have a fun ride and great time. Iron Man Poker Run - This is not for the faint at heart. Designed for the more advanced rider, this event is much longer and harder than our family poker run. Dual Sport Ride - We also put on a very fun ride for those who have dual sport bikes. People always look forward to these events knowing they are in for a fun day. Frost Bite Cross-Country Grand Prix - The White Knuckle of 2004 had such good feedback that the Frost Bite was created to please the appetite of those who loved the White Knuckle. Butt Stomper 24 Hour Off Road Challenge - To say this event is grueling is an understatement. This 24 hour race is the true test of both man and machine. Golden Spike Hare Scrambles - This is one of the most well known Hare Scrambles in the state. This event attracts some serious racers but most just come to have a very fun time. White Knuckle Cross-Country Grand Prix (formerly known as the Nasty Wench) - Another well known race that features some character. Our Three Main Points are: HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN! Monthly Club Meetings Even though our monthly meetings are restricted to adults only, it is a great way to get together and enjoy what every one of our members has to offer. This is where we plan and organize our club events, but we also have a lot of fun in doing so. When do we meet? We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM. Where do we meet? At the American Legion Hall in Mountlake Terrace th Avenue West. Are Visitors Welcome? Absolutely. If you are thinking of getting involved, please come to any of our meetings. COME JOIN THE CLUB If you are thinking of looking into a fun and friendly off road motorcycle club then you owe it to yourself to come and check us out. Every member of the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club are members for one reason, and that is to have fun. Monthly meetings are for adult only, however the monthly play days are for our families and friends of all ages. At the meetings, we plan activities for the whole family. Trail riding, having fun, our families and motorcycles are what we love the most, and not necessarily in that order. 16 DESERT LEGENDS 2009 by Tom Jesmer this article is not about a Desert Legend, but about a first experience participating in the Mattawa 100 Desert Race back in 1972 and getting hooked on dirt bikes. I bought my first real dirt bike during the early spring of 1972 from Sandy Smith at Lynwood Yamaha. It was a 125 MX 2 stroke. No headlights, no battery, not street legal, knobby tires and steel fenders. A true dirt bike. It was awesome. Shortly after I purchased the 125 MX Sandy invited me to go riding with him and 3 of his buddies so they could show me how to ride in the desert. I only remember one of their names, Dale. I was a novice and had never been riding east of the mountains. We arrived at the trail head parking area on the bank of the Columbia River just below the city of Mattawa early one Sunday morning. It was sunny, warm, beautiful, wide open country. I was primed with adrenaline and ready for my first ride in the desert. We geared up and headed for the sand dunes across the highway. Well, as luck would have it with a new bike, just as we were starting into the dunes, my bike started fouling the spark plug. I tried every trick I knew to get it to clean up with no luck. So my plan was to get to the top of the next dune where I could change the plug and I could watch my riding partners disappear over the hills without me. My luck held out and the bike made it to the top of the dune and I did not have to watch the other riders disappear over the hills as three of them had crashed off the back of the dune. The wind had blown the back side of the dune away and they had gone off the cliff side and crashed in a pile a good 20 feet below. Two of the three were Ok. The third had a good concussion and hidden under his sweat shirt a bad exhaust burn that we were not aware of. That s right, under his sweat shirt. No one had jerseys in those days. Riding pants were better known as jeans and everyone I knew wore combat boots as riding boots. Back to the story, after assessing the damages and replacing my plug we took the injured rider back to the parking area where we left him and went riding. Lesson #1. Always skirt dunes. Always keep sand in view as you arch your way across the dunes. I have never forgotten this rule. Lesson #2. Make sure your teachers are experts on the subject. On this adventure back in 72, I failed this rule. (No offense Sandy!) The second start to the ride turned out better than the first with no fouled plugs or crashes and we successfully made our way across the dunes and up Saddle Mountain. I was hooked on cross country riding. As we were loading up for the drive home Sandy suggested that I ride the upcoming Mattawa 100 Desert Race in a couple of weeks. He even gave me a few tips including, remember to clean your air filter really well. (More on this later). I decided on the spot to enter the desert race. After two weeks of anxiety my race prep consisted of cleaning my air cleaner because Sandy told me to and heading back to Mattawa with my brother Mike for my first experience of the Mattawa 100 weekend. Back in 72 there were less than 200 participants in the Saturday poker run and what seemed like thousands in the race. I would like to say we spent Saturday jetting and prepping my 125 for the race. The reality is that as stated earlier I was a novice. I rode around the poker run course and then parked the 125 saving my gas and energy for the race. I knew nothing about jetting or bike maintenance in general. Sandy had seized his 360 MX early in the day. So I spent the afternoon bench racing with the few people I knew out of the hundreds in the camping area. It was a beautiful warm day. Mike and I spent Saturday night in a four person tent in a wind storm freezing our butts off. Lesson #3 It gets very cold in the desert at night. I made a pact with myself. Don t go to the desert without a trailer or camper with a heater. I still live by this rule. Sunday morning was pandemonium and a pure adrenaline rush. I got dressed in my state of the art riding gear to race my new motorcycle. I was ready to go with basically no idea what I was doing or where I was going. I headed for the starting line for my first experience lining up with hundreds of riders 3 and 4 deep for the shotgun start of the race. The start was wild. Ten seconds into the race and there were literally bikes everywhere and dust so thick you couldn t even tell where bikes were coming from or where you were suppose to go. You just followed the cloud and did your best not to crash. This went on for miles as we made our way east on the desert floor. Lap 1 - About 15 miles out the bikes started getting spread out, and the dust was blowing away from the course. You could actually see the sage brush before you hit it. The race got better FLATOUT APRIL 4TH & 5TH,

as visibility improved. I reached the Saddle Mountain hill climb at the east end of the course. From the bottom of the hill you could not see the top, but you could see motorcycles everywhere on the hill and only a handful of them were moving. Carnage comes to mind. A 125 MX was probably not the best weapon for the hill, but I made it to the top without killing the engine. It involved about 10 minutes and a lot of very physical pushing the closer I got to the top. After reaching the ridge road at the top of the hill I fouled my first spark plug. No problem, I had spares. On my way again I was about half way through the first lap, the riding was fun and I was making good time. Then I fouled another plug about 5 miles from the finish line check point. At this point I was thinking that fouling plugs was a little odd as hard as I was running the 125. Even odder was the fact that the plug had grains of sand on the electrode. I made it to the check point, fueled up (bike and body) and stocked up on some extra plugs and took off on the second lap. Lap 2 Just after starting the second lap my bike got noticeably louder. I needed to stop and check it out and fortunately another fouled plug brought me to a stop. The seam on the expansion chamber was cracking along the top weld. The only thing I could do was change the plug and continue on. By the time I made it to the bottom of the Saddle Mountain hill on the second lap the expansion chamber had a foot long crack along the top seam, was extremely loud, and I had fouled another 2 plugs. The hill was in special condition from the 800 motorcycles that went up it on the first lap. The second time up the hill was a struggle. My bike was ear splitting loud, losing power and fouling plugs. Thirty minutes later and after pushing 50% of the hill I was exhausted. The last 25 miles was a breeze after conquering the hill for the second time. By the time I reached the finish line I had fouled 7 spark plugs. After the 5th plug fouled I had to push the bike to start it each time it died. I came across the finish line and was checked in by Bob Wells. I remember his mouth was flapping, but I could not hear anything he was saying. My ears were ringing so loud from the broken expansion chamber it was hours before I could hear what people were saying. I finished 7 th in class with a broken bike, out of spark plugs, exhausted and hooked on cross country racing. I joined the Stumpjumpers M/C in 1979 and have been to all but 2 of the Desert 100 races since then. Each year I look forward to seeing all of the competitors and their families enjoying the same anticipation, confusion, and satisfaction as they have their experiences conquering the desert as I did. Rule #4 I said I would get back to cleaning the air cleaner later. You probably thought I forgot. Rule #4 is when you don t know what you are doing ask one of the experts for how to help or advice. I have never known an off road rider that would not give advice, information or help when it centers on motorcycle maintenance or modifications. I did not ask for help and no one told me to oil my air filter. It was spotless clean. And 100 miles later, seven spark plugs, 1 bore job, 1 new piston and rings, 1 clean and OILED air cleaner and a weld job on the expansion chamber and I was ready to go again. Lesson learned! Please feel free to call me if you want advice on cleaning and prepping your air cleaner

Racing and Peanuts Let s start by saying I have gotten both a gold and a silver trophy from racing in the Desert 100 and I started racing when I was only six years old. I started riding motorcycles when I was four and now I m eight and going to be nine soon. My favorite part of the Desert 100 is all the soft fields you get to ride through, and you can just pin it! On my second year when I started the race, it wasn t a downhill. In one of my biggest crashes there was a 1-2 inch jump and when I went off of it, I hit a rock that was 6-7 inches big. It got my front wheel and I flipped forward and my bike landed on me and a Stump Jumper helped me get up and start my bike again. It didn t take so long to get my trophy at the end, but it took a long time for the family prize poker run. Around eight o clock that night I sat with some teenagers around a camp fire, my daddy was there too. I like peanuts, I don t like the inside I just like to suck the salt off the outside and spit the peanuts in the fire. But I got bored spitting them in the fire so I spit one at one of the teenagers. He wanted to eat it, but one of the other teenagers told him that I had already sucked on it. After my tenth try, I got my peanut in his cup. I kept trying until I got it in again. Then all the peanuts that I found I started throwing at the teenagers and then they started throwing them back. Until I got in trouble and then I had to go to bed. The boringest part of the whole trip was packing up and leaving and sitting in a truck for 2 ½ hours. I spent my time on the way home drinking Gatorade, and polishing my trophy with my finger and playing my Gameboy until I got a headache. I look forward to going to the Desert 100 Kids race every year with my Dad. This year my mom and sister are going to come and watch me race in the 9-12 year old class. I will get to ride on my new bike that is bigger, bouncier and faster. It is a blue bike. Jackson Decker FLATOUT APRIL 4TH & 5TH,

Growing Up In It is hard for me to explain in words all the memories I have of the Desert 100 (or Mattawa as it was originally named). It has been such a big part of my life and I have been attending this race since I was 5 years old. I am now 43 years old and I am still attending with my son, Jake. Every year I attend I think about memories of my childhood and I make new memories with my son. You can imagine the things I have seen, done & been a part of at this race. You can also imagine all the people I have known and met over the years. Some of them are like family to me and others have become life long friends. They re people that I only see at this race every year but I always look forward to seeing them again the next year. I cherish all these people & their friendships. When I began going to Mattawa, I would watch my dad, Cliff Kemp, and his best friend, Kenny Lee, race. I remember how they looked when they were done racing. They had dirt and dust all over their faces and they looked exhausted, but they always had smiles on their faces when they finished. My Mom, Sue Kemp, and Kenny s wife, Char Lee, would always be there to hand them a beer at the finish line. I remember the old bikes they rode and I can not believe they actually raced 100 miles on them! FLATOUT APRIL 4TH & 5TH, My sister, Becky Kemp, started racing when she was about 9 years old. Becky won the Powder Puff class many times. Back then there were very few girls riding motorcycles and there were even fewer racing them. My sister, Tammi & Jodi Sessions and Kristi Henderickson were some of the gals that raced back then. I remember a story about a time Becky was racing Mattawa and she ran out of gas a couple miles from the finish. She saw a guy that was broke down, so she pushed her bike up to him. She asked him if she could have his gas. He said she could, so she tried siphoning it out. That did not work so well because she just ended up swallowing a bunch of gas. She finally ended up tipping the guys bike over enough to pour some gas in her gas cap. She would take that and dump it in her gas tank. She did that until she had enough gas to finish. Believe it or not, after all that, she still won her class. She was only 13 years old at the time. I was not into racing back then. I liked my ballet & dance classes! But when I was about 13 years old, my Dad talked me into racing. He put me on Kenny s YZ250 with a big desert tank on it. I could not touch the ground, so he held the bike up until I took off. I remember asking him where to go. He said, just follow the pink ribbon. I took off and pretty much spent the whole time looking right over my front fender for that pink ribbon! I crashed at the bottom of a hill and it took me forever to find a rock to stand on so I could start the bike. I came in to the finish line and everyone looked rather relieved to

The Dirt see me. I guess it took me a really long time to finish and I am sure I finished in last place. I was not very worried about finishing well; I just wanted to finish to get off that bike! Well, things have changed a lot since then. Once I reached my early 20 s, I decided I wanted to race motorcycles and seriously put some effort into it. My friend, Darin Wolfe, started taking me riding with him on the weekends. We would meet up with his riding buddies, John Frederick, Rich Binckley, Scott VanBargen, Jonah Street and a bunch of other guys. I am sure they were not all that thrilled when I started showing up to go riding with them. They did not cut me any slack, I had to keep up. It made me a good rider and I got faster and faster. I raced this event for many years after that. I have more 2nd & 3rd place finishes at this race than you can believe. I came in 2nd one year behind the leader by 30 seconds! I have competed in the Womens class (they finally changed the name from the Powder Puff to the Womens class!) against some pretty amazing gals, like Tammi Sessions, Denise Burnside, Jessica Johnson, Angie Turner, Tia Flynn, Amanda Binckley & Katy Smutz, to name a few. I have also raced in the Team class with Denise Burnside as my teammate. I finally won the Womens class the 1st time when I was 38 years old! I thank the Lord and my friend, Eric Larson, for getting me through that race safely and helping me to win. I came in 2nd the next year then won again the year after that when I was 40! I am proof that perseverance pays off! The 1st time I won I was in disbelief! When Debbie Tonsgard told me I was the 1st woman in, I started crying so hard, one of my contacts fell out! After I composed myself and parked my bike, someone said I had a front flat tire. I knew then why about half way through the race I felt like something was wrong with my bike. My front end kept washing out on me! I came in 49 th overall on the 1st lap that year and about 15 minutes ahead of 2 nd place in my class. I must have been on a mission. I still look back and can not believe how well I did and that I finally accomplished my goal, and I have done it twice now! I can tell my Dad that I know where to go and how to follow the pink ribbon now (okay Howard Larson, no comments please)! There are so many people that have helped and encouraged me all these years. I do not think I would have ever accomplished this goal without them. I can not name them all but I want to at least be sure to thank Darin Wolfe, Jessica Johnson, Jeff Dahners, Tony Tonsgard and Skooks Pong. I also appreciate Phil Douglas at AfterShocks in Palo Alto, CA and his excellent suspension work on my bikes! I also want to thank the Stumpjumpers and all the members that put in so much time and effort to pull off this incredible event! Tom Jesmer s voice will forever be imbedded in my memory. I will never forget hearing him at FLATOUT APRIL 4TH & 5TH,

Dust in her eyes, dust in her nose, vroom, vroom, vroom, there she goes!!! 6:00am over the loud speaker telling us sign up was open. And Jerry Allens blue suburban is something I know many people will always remember! Following that old blue suburban out to the start was a race in itself! Just ask Phil Stevens it s not nice to pick on a girl! My son Jake and my nephews Nate & Jack race the kids race every year. Jake is now riding a Honda CRF250 and he will have to race the 15 and under class in the big race this year. I hope he has as much fun as I have had racing. I know he will have many good memories. I want to thank him for all his patience and support while I have raced. I know it is hard to explain to your friends that your Mom races motorcycles. My Dad told me that when Jake was about 3 years old, he was watching motocross on TV with him and he asked Jake if he was going to do that some day. Jake said, No Poppee, that s only for girls! I know he doesn t think that way anymore! Recently, my sister and I were talking about going to the race when we were younger. We remember our family packed in our motor home with the bike trailer on the back and the drive over the mountain to the race. Once we got there we worked the gate and handed out programs all day and late into the night. The sight of looking down R road and seeing a steady stream of headlights for miles was an amazing experience. We loved our matching Honda XR75s and we rode the heck out of them! We talked about how cute our little sisters Tracy (Kemp) Strash and Heidi Lee looked riding around camp on their Honda 50s and in their matching gear. There were years that very unusual and sometimes scary things happened at the race. There have been times when I have had friends or a family members taken to the hospital, sometimes by ambulance or helicopter. I do not like to think about those times, but unfortunately, when you are in a sport like this, things like that happen. By the Grace of God, everyone is okay now. And I am sure many people remember the year it snowed and the year of the fire on Saddle Mountain. There are also some fun things that happened like the time the club put up a big screen at night for all the attendees and played a film of the race from the year before. There were people sitting on top of trailers, in lawn chairs, they were everywhere! I look forward to many more years of memories from this race and hopefully, a few more wins? I hope everyone has a wonderful time this year and goes home with many special memories of your own. Keep the rubber side down and God Bless, Darcy Kemp #9 FLATOUT APRIL 4TH & 5TH,

My Desert 100 Story By Mike Rudolph Mike loads his XR250R for travel from Anchorage, Alaska to the Desert 100. This race has made me do some crazy stuff. There is no logical explanation for some of my decisions made in relation to this event that often makes others shake their heads in disbelief. It all started for me in 1985 when the Mattawa 100 resurfaced in a new location and renamed to the Desert 100. It was my first race and it happened to be on my 15 th birthday. I remember straddling the front wheel on the starting line waiting for the race to start, feeling my knees shake and my gut boil with the excited anticipation of racing through the desert. That race would hook me and shape me into the nut I am today. The Desert 100 became the one big event that no matter what I was doing, I would do everything I could to attend. Even when my time in the U.S. Coast Guard had me traveling all over the world, I still made every attempt to ride. In 89 I borrowed my mom s XR250R and had one of the best races of my life. Then I drove all night back to my station on the Oregon Coast so I could make our roll call the next morning. In 90 I had just rebuilt my XR200R and was aiming to win the 4-Stroke class (yeah right). I rode like a banshee, but crashed 20 miles into the race spraining both wrists and bruising my knee and thigh. My helmet visor was all bashed up, my handle bars bent and clutch lever busted. I limped into the pits at mile 50 wanting to quit, but my dad tells me, If you quit now, you won t get your Desert 100 Finisher T-Shirt! That was enough motivation for me to press on and finish the second lap which was the toughest ride I ve ever had to complete. I got tired of borrowing my mom s bike and decided to buy a desert sled and keep it at my dad s house just for the Desert 100. So, in 93 I arrived on scene with a new XR600R. Too bad I teamraced that year, because at the end of the first lap, I was in the top 25. My partner was a slow old guy and his DR350 never seemed to get out of 3 rd gear. Mike s truck on location. Probably the best year was 1995 for the 25 th Anniversary Desert 100. The Stumpjumpers had a very special guest in attendance that I had the pleasure to meet and talk with. The legendary Malcolm Smith. Not to mention it was the first year my dad qualified for the 50+ class and earned a huge 3 rd place trophy and I had a top-ten finish in the 4-stroke class. Then in 97 my brother-in-law was needing a bike to race that year. So I agreed to haul my XR250R from Anchorage to the Desert 100 so he could have a bike. The drive was 2400 miles and took just 3 days. I was lucky enough to be awarded the Who drove the furthest prize that year and earned a $25 gas certificate from the Vantage gas station. Since then I ve had many more Desert 100 experiences. They are always a great time. It is certainly the biggest event I attend and to which all other races are measured against. Ride on! 28 My name is Chuck Cubine I m 40 years old and I am NOT a professional motorcycle racer. I have been riding off-road for 7 or 8 years and rode with the Stumpjumpers motorcycle club for three of those years. I was a sweep rider for the Dessert 100 in Vantage and then again in Odessa. I had never raced in the Dessert 100 but decided it was something I had to try. My first attempt was 2006 and it didn t go anywhere near as planned. My bike failed to start at the start line and 650 other racers were in front of me before I ever got going. I did get past a few of them to finish 82nd over all and 12th in my class which was a respectable result, given the circumstances. In 2007 I decided to try again. I had not been training at all and was concerned about going full tilt for 100 miles. I get tired after 60 or 70 and start making mistakes and that is dangerous at the desert speeds. I decided it would be better to only go 50 miles so I recruited my good friend and racer Scott Weber to ride the team race with me. In the team race you use one bike and the first rider does 50 miles and then hands the bike off to rider #2 who rides the second 50 miles. Scott agreed to do the first loop because he s faster than me and because I begged and pleaded with him. The first loop is far more important than the second. You have to get ahead of the pack and stretch out a good lead on the first lap if you want to have any chance of doing well. Scott did his part and got a good start. There were over 800 racers and they all start at the same time. It is an amazing thing to see. They blow air horns and the racers run to their bikes, start them up and head out across about a mile wide field to a set of poles where there is a giant smoke bomb burning to guide you in. Once between the poles you are in the course and under way. It s important to get across that first mile quickly so you don t get behind 800 other racers that you ll have to work all day picking off to get up to the front. I was waiting at the pits for Scott to arrive. I was sure he would be in the top and I would then have the monumental task of not loosing the great position that he would be handing off to me. The leaders (a group of five) went by at about the 80 minute mark (you figure out the speed average). Then 5-6 minutes later other fast guys started passing through, getting gas and fresh water and back on the course. I waited... and waited...and waited. When the top fifty had gone by I began to worry. Then here came Scott pointing at his flat front tire. He was in 60th overall, not bad for having gone 30 MILES on the flat, to still be ahead of 700 plus racers. So, then began the 40 minute pit stop. We changed the tube only to find out that in our haste we had pinched the new tube and flatted it too. We started over and finally got the bike ready to go. Now, real pros would have a second front wheel ready for a quick swap but second front wheels cost 500 bucks (and let s face it, we are not real pros). I finally get on the bike and all the other pits around us are cheering me on having seen what we have been going through for the last 40 minutes. I rev the motor on the bike and move into position for take-off and with crowd cheering full FLATOUT APRIL 4TH & 5TH, My Biggest Get Off by Chuck Cubine on...i stall the motor (did I mention we re not pros). After a quick restart and now zero cheering, I hit the course. Now we are in about 400th overall, so I m thinking that I ll just go easy and put in my 50 miles. I ll go at a good clip and I ll have some fun picking off the slow guys. Then after about three miles I started getting some arm pump and settled down to get into a groove. I came to the once famous river crossing (now a bridge) and then got stuck in a single track trail behind some struggling young racers, so I got time to regroup. When I got out of the single track and into the main part of the course on that side of the river I picked it up a notch and started picking off racers (keep in mind that most of them are on their second lap and I m on my first). I went through the first check point and then put about ten miles behind me. I then came up on a pack (in motorcycle terms I guess it would be a gang) of six racers and started the passing. Every time the trail widened or there was an alternate lane I jumped at the opportunity to get by another racer. The front guy in this gang did not want to give up his spot. Now, I know I m going to get around him, and I know I m going faster than him (otherwise I would not have caught up to him) but he made me wait. At last there was a field crossing. Now at a field crossing the course is as wide as the field, so if you are willing, you can go real, real, real fast across the field and pass people. So, I move to the right and roll on the throttle and click into 6th gear. At about mid RPM on my bike (Scott s Husqvarna 450) the other guy gives in to me and I pop back over into the lane ahead of him and I m not eating any more dust, yeah! Then at the end of the field there was a short uphill onto a plateau and on the plateau was rock city. Now I m still at full speed cause the uphill was only feet and I m focused and making sure I m avoiding the larger rocks but then there was a quick bobble of the front end and the handlebars quickly lock about 60 degrees to the left and I am slammed to the ground at 60 plus MPH. I don t know how many flips or how far I went or any of that. I m sure it was spectacularly gruesome. FULL-LINE INDUSTRIAL SUPPLIER FREE DAILY JOB-SITE DELIVERY! 29 Well I was unconscious after that little thump on the head, chest, side, leg, thigh, shoulder, neck, etc...and so I lay there on the course. Some of the guys I had just passed saw me and the next check point was only a mile down the course so they reported rider down and someone from the check came back to me. When the check point person (Brian Gjernes) got to me I was just coming to. He says, Are you OK? I was dazed but said yeah, I think so. He asked if I could get up and I proved that I could. Then he got the bike up and started (now with twisted handlebars, a new front flat, side panel hanging off, etc...sorry Scott) and asked me if I thought I could ride and I said yes. Now, I had no idea that I had been unconscious, in fact at this point I thought that it was the day before and Scott and I were out during the poker run (as we had been the day before) dialing in our bikes and swapping back and forth trying to decide who s bike we would use for the race. So, here I am following Brian back to the check and thinking where did Scott go? When we arrived at the check I asked Brian if he had seen Scott and he said yeah about two hours ago. Now I m confused and Brian keeps asking me if I m sure I m OK. He took me over to his truck and said you better take off your helmet and get a look at yourself. I took off the helmet and saw that I had definitely done some damage. As I was sitting there at the check I began to realize that it wasn t Saturday and that this was a race check, not a poker run check. Over the next 45 minutes or so things slowly came back to me and I realized I had had the biggest get-off that I have had so far in my motorcycling career. Brian told me he would take the bike and myself back to camp in his truck after the race but I found out the other check was just across the hill and I could ride the road back to camp from there and stubborn me did just that. The folks back at the pits were concerned by now that I hadn t returned and even more concerned to see me pull in from the wrong direction. Needless to say, we didn t wait around for trophies this year. I went to the doctor the next morning and he confirmed that I had indeed been in a motorcycle crash. Nothing a little Viacadin and a day of rest wouldn t cure. I thank God for protecting me. Also, thanks to Scott for racing with me, Thanks to Don and Ryan for being the pit crew and thanks to Brian Gjernes and the other racer for getting me off the course. See you next year!! 33 APPROACHING A DOWNED RIDER BY DR. TARLOW COURTESY REPRINT GRANTED BY DIRT RIDER MAGAZINE Trackside medicine is intended to provide a general medical guideline and is not intended to replace the clinical judgment of a doctor or take the place of a medical doctor s diagnostic or treatment recommendations. We will always err on the conservative side for safety purposes. MOTOCROSS. I ve been involved in just about every sport, and unfortunately, motocross ranks high as an injury-ridden sport. On any given day, you can see someone sprawled out on the track like a cheap yard sale. Stopping trackside and providing medical assistance to a downed rider is what any responsible rider would do. When I ve taken a dirt sample, it s nice to know that some guy cares enough to stop and check on me, even if it is just to tell me to get up and stop blocking the track. It would be great to be able to teach you advanced trauma life support or CPR protocol from trackside medicine, but with my writing skills and your limited reading time, it isn t going to happen in this article. The real truth is we all should know CPR. Nothing can compare with the feeling of helping to save someone s life. CPR online courses such as, can certify you for free and in less time than it takes to put on a new set of tires, with far less sweat and profanity. For the purpose of this article, we will assume that the downed rider is conscious, possibly alert, oriented and breathing. So what should we do when stopping to help a downed rider? First, always remember that you should never move the rider until his condition has been sufficiently assessed and always send for medical backup. We can all attest that after hitting the ground we are not always aware of our surroundings or all our injuries. Pain from one injury (broken wrist or ankle) can mask the severity of other more important injuries (spinal cord compromise). We must always assess other potentially serious injuries before focusing on the obvious or less serious injuries. Head, neck, back and chest injuries (breathing difficulty) are the first to evaluate once you have determined that CPR is not required. If the rider isn t alert, determine whether he is having difficulty breathing. If he is, implement CPR training. If the rider is alert, ask him if he is having any problems breathing. If not, obtain the rider s full name and whom he s with; make sure to remember this information in case he passes out. Determine if he is alert and oriented to the time, place and situation. If he is disoriented, assume a worst- case scenario and that he has a head injury and may be unaware of the full extent of his injuries. Ask where his pain is. Less critical, but painful, injuries may distract from potentially serious injuries to the head, back or neck. Ask if he is experiencing any numbness or tingling of the arms and legs (reflects a potential spinal cord injury). If yes, assume neck or back injury and minimize any movement and get an EMT. If there is no numbness or tingling of the extremities, you can rule out a neck or back injury by lightly feeling over the entire spine from the neck to the lowest part of the back for any tenderness. If any tenderness is present, then assume possible fracture and get an EMT. If there is no tenderness over the entire spine and no numbness or tingling of the arms or legs, then it is probably safe to focus on obvious injuries. Evaluate the rider s body systematically from head to toe. You have already ruled out breathing difficulty, cervical spine and back injury and level of consciousness. Now, evaluate quickly for any major lacerations and apply pressure if the rider is bleeding (this may include a protruding bone fracture). Next, assess chest wall tenderness for rib fractures along with abdominal pain from blunt trauma such as smashing in to a handlebar. Abdominal pain may be the result of a liver or spleen laceration, which is potentially life-threatening. Don t write it off when a rider complains of abdominal pain. At this point, the rider is stable, and we can focus on major joints such as shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles for any fractures. Remember, triage involves evaluating the possibly life-threatening and most serious injuries first. Triage of the downed rider must be done quickly and efficiently. Don t focus all your attention on the obvious minor injury (it s the injuries you can t see that can kill you) be systematic. FIVE THINGS TO REMEMBER 1. CPR: (airway, breathing, circulation): They say breathing is important. 2. BRAIN FUNCTION: Helps determine level of crisis and if the patient can provide any help with diagnosis. 3. SPINAL CORD: Potentially devastating injury, don t make a bad situation worse by moving the rider. 4. BLUNT TRAUMA: Internal injuries, mild to moderate abdominal pain can be a life-threatening sign. 5. FRACTURES: If it looks funny, it s probably broken; if the bone is sticking out, it s a no-brainer.
