The Master Camp, run in cooperation with Valentino Rossi s VR46 Riders Academy, features a week of rider training and education held at Rossi s Motor Ranch and Misano World Circuit. KTM North America has an Ten Years Ago... The 2008 crop of Japanese literbikes dominated the cover of the June 2008 issue of Roadracing World, as the bikes squared off for that year's 1000cc shootout. In this case, the winner was clear: "The Honda CBR1000RR is so much better than the competition that it would have still won no matter what track we went to or what tires we ran, under any conditions, anyplace, anytime," testers concluded. Mat Oxley profiled the machines Kenny Roberts was assembling into a museum. Included were racebikes significant to Roberts' career, including Roberts' title-winning 1980 Yamaha OW48 500cc GP racer and his son Kenny Lee Roberts' Championship-winning 2000 Suzuki RGV500. Alex Gobert showed off his huge, 6,000-square-foot, four-bedroom home in the suburbs of Sydney, Australia. It was the largest home ever featured in Cribs. Kellie Sands outlined the all-female track day club she'd created in Canada, and Misti Hurst detailed her first race at Daytona, the AMA 600cc Supersport event; she finished 41st. Benny Solis Jr. tested his new Moriwaki MD250H and found it to be similar to his Honda RS125 GP racebike, except it was "way harder" to get similar lap times out of the four-stroke racer. American Kenny Noyes crushed the competition in the Suzuki GSX-R European Cup Series at Valencia. The series featured equally-prepped GSX- R750s, and riders drew numbers to determine which machine they would be issued for the race. Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo took MotoGP wins at Jerez and Estoril. Mat Mladin won the AMA Pro Superbike race at Barber Motorsports Park, and Lorenzo Lanzi and Noriyuki Haga were victorious in World Superbike races at Valencia. Robert Jensen dominated the Michelin WERA National Challenge Series event at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway, and Mike Sullivan won the WMRRA Open Superbike race on a Saturday at Pacific Raceway that was hit by sleet, rain, hail, and snow. Perhaps the single most eagle-eyed reader ever to peruse Roadracing World wrote in, noting that Josh Hayes' helmet depicted in the April Lidz column was painted with a hurricane rotating in the wrong direction. "And All This Time, We Thought It Was Helmet 'Art'," the letter's headline read. RW 12 Roadracing World, June 2018

3 nounced that it will field a full-factory, in-house team in the 2019 American Flat Track (AFT) Singles Championship under the banner Red Bull KTM. The team will use 450 SX-F Factory Edition motorcycles and will be led by former KTM factory Superbike racer and Brand Ambassador Chris Fillmore, who has taken on the new role of Flat Track and Road Racing Team Manager. In its release, KTM hinted that it is also considering entering its new 790 Duke in the AFT Twins class. Defending Champion Jared Mees was the first rider to the checkered flag at the weather-delayed second round of the American Flat Track (AFT) Twins Championship, at Dixie Speedway, in Woodstock, Georgia. But after an independent lab compared a standard Dunlop spec tire against four different tires collected from four different competitors at the race, AFT officials disqualified Mees for using a chemically altered rear tire. A statement from AFT said Mees tire contained several chemicals known to be used in motorsports to alter tire compounds, thereby enhancing performance. These include: Hexanedioic acid bis(ethylhexyl) ester, Dodecanoic acid, and 1,3-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, bis(2-ethylhexyl) ester. The tires from other riders were found to be legal. Mees forfeited his victory, purse and points, and was placed on probation for 12 months. Kenny Coolbeth, Jr., who had finished second to Mees, was awarded the race win, giving him the points lead. Coolbeth s rear tire was also tested following the race in Georgia and was found to be in compliance with the rules. Brandon Price won the AFT Singles race at Dixie Speedway on a Honda CRF450R. Mees earned some redemption when he rode his Indian Scout FTR750 to victory in the Texas Half-Mile at Texas Motor Speedway and recaptured the Championship points lead. Morgen Mischler took his career-first Pro dirt track win in the AFT Singles race at Texas. Track Happenings Utah Motorsports Campus, the motorsports facility formerly known as Miller Motorsports Park, has once again been put up for sale by its owner, Tooele County (Utah). The county is now accepting bids to purchase Utah Motorsports Campus until July 2, 2018, and officials say that the county will announce a winning bidder if there is one within 30 days of that date. The sale could then close within 30 days of the winning bid being accepted, meaning the sale could close by September. X-Games Skateboard Gold Medalist Elliott Sloan, seen at left shooting video just before Hawk's ride begins, also took a two-seat ride. With bein Sports cameras rolling all around the track, Hawk did three laps with Ulrich, reaching 160 mph on the long back straightaway. After the ride, Hawk said, That was the best rollercoaster [ride] ever! Nothing compares to that. That was one of the most unbelievable experiences I ve ever had. Everything else is going to be boring today. Hawk also told Ulrich a retired Pro Superbike racer who was a Tony Hawk fan when he was a kid Man, you re good! For more, see page 74. RW RVP 25 Used in the world of Moto 2&3 and WSBK, this fork comes equipped with Öhlins brand new FKR damping system. The fork features machined fork bottoms for reduced weight, increased high speed stability and cornering. The internals use Öhlins spring pressurized system that offers quick, easy maintenance and setting changes. The new damping system design delivers a more consistent performance curve to increase grip, stability and bump absorption to improve lap times. With the TTX Technology and a new designed 8mm piston shaft, we reduced pressure build-up and created a faster damping response. This gives a linear style to the damping characteristics which creates more tuning options so the rider can find the ideal setting for the type of track. ÖHLINS RVP 25 RACING FORK IS NOW AVAILABLE! 5 QUICK LOOK: Ducati SuperSport S Quick Long Ride: A Ducati You Can Live With All Day, Every Day By David Swarts Back in the day, I remember reading magazine reviews of Ducatis in which the testers raved about the Italian motorcycles performance and complained about their lack of comfort and practicality for everyday street riding. After I joined Roadracing World and started testing Ducatis for myself, I quickly learned that everything I had read about Ducatis was true. But that was Ducati s niche, building exotic-looking and exotic-sounding sportbikes that put performance and styling well ahead of street riding comfort, or so it would seem. But Ducati has been maturing and expanding, just like its market. The Italian manufacturer now has enough resources and demand for its products that it can branch out and create new motorcycles that appeal to different tastes and missions, including the Multistrada, the Diavel, and the Scrambler. And for those who have craved a Ducati sportbike with performance on the racetrack and exquisite Italian styling along with enough comfort and versatility to be an everyday ride, I give you the Ducati SuperSport S. The heart of the SuperSport is The Ducati SuperSport S with optional Ducati saddlebags. It s designed to perform well on twisty roads and racetracks, yet remain comfortable enough for long trips. A quick, 718-mile highway run, followed by another 300 street miles to and from a photo shoot plus a track day at Chuckwalla proved the concept. an iconic, 90-degree V-Twin powerplant a Testastretta 11 engine displacing 937cc with a bore and stroke of 94.0 mm x 67.5 mm and a compression ratio of 12.6:1. The 11 indicates that there is 11 of overlap in the opening of the two 35.5 mm intake valves and the two 28.8 mm exhaust valves in each cylinder head. Compared to the previous Testastretta Evoluzione engine, which had 41 of valve overlap, the newer engine design improves combustion, reduces hydrocarbon emissions, and increases fuel efficiency. The trademark Ducati Desmodromic valve actuation system is still used in the 937cc Testastretta 11, as is a Ride-by-Wire (RbW) throttle system and electronic fuel injection. The SuperSport s engine is tuned for low-to-midrange power and is claimed to produce 113 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 70 lbs.-ft. of peak torque at 6,500 rpm with 80% of that peak torque available as low as 3,000 rpm. On the Dynojet Model 250i dynamometer at Attack Tuning Center ( , Performance.com), our test unit produced horsepower at 9,000 rpm and lbs.-ft. of torque at 7,500 rpm, measured at the rear wheel. The SuperSport s V-Twin en gine serves as a fully-stressed member of the chassis. Its cylinders are the mounting points for the tubular-steel, trellis-style front subframe that locates the steering head; a steel rear subframe bolts to the rear cylinder, and the die-cast single-sided aluminum swingarm pivots in the engine cases. The standard SuperSport model comes with inverted 43 mm Marzocchi forks and a Sachs rear shock, both adjustable, and the SuperSport S is fitted with inverted 48 mm Öhlins forks with TiN-coated sliders and an Öhlins rear shock, both fully-adjustable. The SuperSport S also comes with a Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) system that allows clutchless upshifts and clutchless downshifts, but DQS can be fitted to the standard machine as an extra-cost option. Both versions of the Super- Sport are fitted with the same aluminum alloy wheels (3.50 x 17.0-inch front and 5.50 x inch rear), the same Pirelli Rosso Corsa II sport radials, the same 245 mm (9.6-inch) rear brake disc and a two-piston Brembo caliper, and the same front brake system dual 320 mm (12.6-inch) discs, dual radial-mount Brembo M4-32 monoblock calipers, and a Brembo PR18/19 master cylinder. An adjustable Bosch Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) comes standard on both SuperSport models. Claimed wheelbase is 58.2 inches (1,478 mm), rake is 24, trail is 91 mm (3.6 inches) and measured weight with the 4.2-gallon (15.9-liter) fuel tank full is 465 pounds (211 kg). Both versions of the Super- Sport come with adjustable Ducati Traction Control (DTC), and three Ducati Riding Modes (Sport, Touring and Urban). The Riding Modes can be changed on the fly, but the settings for the DTC and ABS systems can only be changed when the motorcycle is stopped. Custom ized DTC and ABS settings can also be saved by owners. When the opportunity to test a SuperSport S came up there was just one little hiccup: The bike was located at Ducati North America s 18 Roadracing World, June 2018

(Below) A Supersport S on a twisty road. new headquarters in Northern California, and Roadracing World is located hundreds of miles away in Southern California. Then the idea was hatched: I would fly up to Ducati, pick up the SuperSport S, and then ride it back to Southern California. And since I was already in the neighborhood, liberally speaking, I decided to ride the SuperSport S north to a MotoAmerica team test at Thunderhill before heading south toward home. And I would do all of this riding in one day and night in February on a Ducati. In total, over the course of about 18 hours, I covered 718 miles on Interstate highways in about 10 hours of riding time on the Ducati. And instead of riding straight to the nearest chiropractor and grabbing a bottle of Advil at the end, I swear that I could have kept going if I needed to. I have often casually written in tests that a bike has had enough comfort to ride all day, but this time I did ride the bike all day. And while I ve done several 150- mile rides that required lots of standing on the pegs, leg stretches and butt shifting, I found the engine smoothness, wind protection, ergonomics, and seat on the Ducati SuperSport S to be so close to perfect that I didn t have to make adjustments to my position for comfort while covering the 150 miles between each fill-up. Sometimes I didn t even get off the bike when I was refueling (because it was warmer to stay on the bike!) and then simply kept going. The genuine accessory luggage Ducati provided for my trip (side cases and a small tank bag) increased the practicality of the SuperSport S; the bags were easy to use, lock, remove, and replace all without making the machine too wide to split lanes. The mirrors, however, were all but useless at highway speeds due to vibration that didn t seem to affect any other part of the motorcycle. The LCD dashboard was large enough that it was easy to read, but the method of adjusting modes and settings could have been more intuitive. And lastly, it was nearly impossible to find neutral while the engine was running. After returning to SoCal, I also took the Ducati out for some sporty rides, and the same bike that carried me in comfort on the highway for hours at a time, also ripped up my favorite twisty roads with bravado. The torquey V-Twin responded to my throttle inputs seamlessly and gave me all the smooth acceleration I could ask for; the suspension provided me with terrific feel for the Pirellis gripping the asphalt; the steering afforded me surgical precision; the Brembo brakes had the right amount of feedback with all the power I needed on the street; and the DQS worked as advertised, except for the aforementioned problem finding neutral. We then took the luggage off the Ducati and without changing anything else asked Racing Editor Chris Ulrich to ride the SuperSport S at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, at speed. I rode the first session with the bike in Sport mode and with ABS at 2 and TC at 3, explained Ulrich. It was a bit sluggish in terms of the engine. The TC intervention took too much power out. It had tons of torque right off the bottom. It accelerated pretty well. But I felt the TC was taking too much power out when it wasn t really necessary. The same thing with the ABS. It took away some of the outright performance on the racetrack that I like, personally. The ABS went into panic mode early, decreased brake pressure, and made me push deep into corners. Chassis-wise, the rear was a little soft with the standard setting. When I would get aggressive I would get to the apex and find myself pushing wide, and I had a hard time finishing the corners. After the initial session, I turned the ABS off, turned the TC down to 1, added one full turn of preload to the shock and it was much better. I could use much more aggression turning in. It helped me place the motorcycle where I wanted. Without the ABS on I could stop the bike the way I wanted to, and with the TC turned down the engine was much more responsive. It didn t take as much power away right off the bottom and it allowed me to spin the rear tire out of the corner and still keep driving forward. The throttle response was very good. The transmission and quick shifter performed as I expected it to, which was flawless. If you try to get your first downshift too early it won t let you. I suspect it s the ECU keeping the rider from over-revving the engine. As I increased the pace, I felt the chassis had some flex to it, which you expect from a steel trellis chassis, but it had great feedback from the front. It lacked some outright drive grip. I could get the rear tire moving fairly early, but that could be a factor of the street tire and the quick pace, which is something this motorcycle is definitely capable of. It s definitely a Ducati. For its purpose and for what it is, it s not bad around the track. It has decent ground clearance. The riding position is good. I felt Roadracing World, June

7 Ducati Supersport S Rear-Wheel Horsepower & Torque Ducati Superstock S + + MAX POWER: bhp MAX TORQUE: lbs.-ft Power (bhp) Torque (lbs.-ft.) Engine Speed (RPM x 1000) comfortable right away. It s a really fun motorcycle. If it was a little stiffer and had a few more horsepower it would be even better, but it s still really fun. With production deadlines and racing schedules like they are, it s sometimes difficult to find the time to put a bike through such a wide-ranging evaluation as this one. But in hindsight, it was absolutely the right thing to do in order to get a true sample of the SuperSport S. If you want something that has more impressive numbers or goes faster on the racetrack, Ducati makes a bike like that. If you want a machine to take on an adventure that might include some unpaved roads, Ducati makes a bike for that, too. But if you want a bike that can carve through traffic to work every day, rip up the pavement on your favorite twisty road or at a track day, look exotic and sexy at a bike night, and haul you and some luggage on a 718-mile overnight excursion on the highway, Ducati makes the 2018 SuperSport S. 9 (Above, Left) Alex Dumas (23) won Junior Cup Race One on a KTM, with Ashton Yates (22) second on a Kawasaki and Sean Ungvarsky (48) third on a KTM. Yates ran away in Race Two on Sunday. (Above, Right) Travis Wyman (24) beat Andrew Lee (14) and Tim Bemisderfer (511) in Stock 1000 at Road Atlanta. (Below, Left) Chris Parrish (128) beat Jason Madama and Curtis Murray in the Twins Cup race. Photos by Brian J. Nelson. Lee led the first two laps on his RiderzLaw-sponsored Kawasaki ZX-10R and finished second. Tim Bemisderfer, the 2014 ASRA Superstock National Champion, pressured Lee to the end and finished third on his Big un Motorsports Suzuki GSX-R1000. MOTO- AMERICA INSIDE INFO The Attack Performance/ Herrin Compound Racing race hauler and Josh Herrin s Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike built by team owner Richard Stanboli never made it to Road Atlanta. So Herrin turned his personal Yamaha YZF-R1S from a streetbike into a racebike with whatever parts he could borrow in the Road Atlanta paddock. By Saturday morning, Herrin s bike was fitted with racing bodywork; fork internals and a shock from Öhlins; a slipon exhaust pipe from Graves; a quick-shifter; a reflashed ECU; 46 Roadracing World, June 2018 Attack Performance rearsets and clip-ons; racing brake lines; and Dunlop racing tires. Herrin netted 16 points toward the Moto America Superbike Championship. I ve lost Championships by five points or less. Now we re ahead of Roger [Hayden], Bobby [Fong], and Jake [Lewis] in the points. We accomplished what we set out to do. A few riders left Road Atlanta without any points. Michael Gilbert suffered a concussion, a sprained right ankle, a broken nose, and lacerations and bruising to his face when he highsided his RiderzLaw Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 early in Supersport Race One. Cameron Petersen suffered a concussion when he crashed on the first lap of Superbike Race One. Petersen was treated and released at a local hospital, but was not cleared to race on Sunday. Brad Perdiew crashed his Altus Motorsports/AP MotoArts Yamaha FZ-07 due to an engine problem during Twins Cup Qualifying Session Two and suffered a broken pelvis. Perdiew, the fastest rider in the Twins Cup class during the official pre-season test at Barber, had surgery to plate the fractures. The new Junior Cup faced controversy as riders on the popular Yamaha YZF-R3 were outgunned by riders on the new Kawasaki Ninja 400 and the KTM RC390R homologation special. The highest qualifying Yamaha rider, Cory Ventura, was fifth. Ventura was also the highest-finishing Yamaha rider in Race One with fifth, and Jay Newton was fourth and very close to second place in wet Race Two. In trap speeds during qualifying, Race One winner Alex Dumas was the fastest KTM rider at mph, Dallas Daniels was the fastest Ninja 400 rider at mph, and the highest speed recorded by a Yamaha YZF-R3 rider was Ryan Deutschlander s mph. Junior Cup racer Jamie Astudillo, age 17, made history by finishing third in Race Two and becoming the first woman in history to finish on the podium at a MotoAmerica event. And that came after she rode her Kawasaki Ninja 400 to fourth in Race One. Considering she placed 18th in the 2017 Moto American KTM RC Cup Championship with an average race finish of 13th, Astudillo was asked about her results. The progression is huge, said Astudillo, who is also a Pro motocross racer. Last year, everyone knows I was in the far end of the pack. All winter long, I just put my head down... I said, 'I have to try harder. I have to be up front. I have to be on the podium to keep racing. So... we went to a bunch of track days. We were on the asphalt all the time." 11 First Person/Opinion: BY JOSH HAYES After the test in Alabama, I went to Utah Motorsports Campus to help with the Yamaha R World press event. It was being held in conjunction with a Bridgestone tire launch, and Yamaha asked me to come out and lend a hand. Unfortunately, I wasn t able to stick around for the whole thing. I just helped them do some prep work and spent the evening having dinner with the journalists. I flew home Tuesday morning because on Wednesday Mellie and I were flying to Atlanta, and it was going to be our first time flying with our baby, Hawk. So I was going to be in pretty hot water if I wasn t there to help take part in all of that. The flight actually went pretty well. We were lucky and we got upgraded to First Class, so Melissa and I had some big seats to work with and we had the opportunity to stand up and walk around with Hawk a little bit. And we managed to do the whole flight without too many tears, mine or Hawk s! Once I got to Road Atlanta, it was a different scene for me. There was no reason for me to hang around the race truck and talk with the crew about the bike and stuff, so instead, I walked the track with Sebastiao Ferreira, Bobby Fong and quite a few of the Junior Cup guys. We just kind of talked shop. I shared some of the things I ve learned in all my years Josh Hayes (right) watched Yamaha riders from trackside during the MotoAmerica round at Road Atlanta, with past World Champions Jason Pridmore (left) and Scott Russell (center). Photo by Brian J. Nelson. of racing at Road Atlanta, and I reminded everyone that I would be around the whole weekend if they wanted to talk after they had seen the track at speed. This was my first race weekend to take the scooter and go watch from the side of the racetrack, and I m having to learn this new skill because I never really paid attention to watching from different parts of the racetrack. Usually, my point of view has been from the motorcycle. So I m going to need some time to figure out exactly what to look for. It ended up being crazy because I was out on the track so much I was scrambling in between sessions to chat with the guys about what I had seen. Before I knew it, the day was over, it was dark outside, and I was still trying to make sure everyone had everything they needed. Overall, I felt it was a bit of an anticlimactic weekend as far as the racing went. There were a few exciting parts of the races, especially the wet race, but it was not the weekend we had hoped to have for the spectators. We then flew directly to Austin on Monday so that we could spend some time with my parents and let them hang out with Hawk for a couple of days. On Wednesday we went down to the Alamo and mixed things up a little bit with some fun, but it was a little bit rough because Hawk doesn t like his car seat. Where most kids like being in a car, mine screams! Yamaha had a very busy schedule for me at COTA. On top of making sure I was out on track for the Superbike guys, Yamaha had quite a few things lined up, including autograph sessions and riding the Yamaha NIKEN three-wheeler on the parade lap on Friday. I did quite a few interviews over the weekend, and I also ended up giving VIP tours of our race transporter, something I ve done before. Then I ended up doing some P.A. announcing with Jonathan Green for Superbike Race One. It wasn t looking like an exciting race for a while, but then Mathew Scholtz started charging from the back. I was pretty impressed with what Mat did. I love to see a hard-charger like that. I ended up going back to the announcer s booth for Superbike Race Two, and it ended up being a less-than-exciting race. The racing just hasn t materialized liked we had hoped, so far. I m hoping that Cameron [Beaubier] and the boys can come up with the goods and start showing what they ve got! RW 54 Roadracing World, June 2018

12 After what was my busiest off-season ever (something about having a baby sort of sucks all your time, you know?), we finally have run the first Moto- America round. I knew going into the weekend that things would be challenging. Between running Cory Ventura's program in the Junior Cup, my own racing in the Stock 1000 class and now the added working mom title, it was more important than ever to manage my time. One thing I have always struggled with is trying to do everything myself, which isn t an option anymore. I was SO thankful to have Cory s parents Chris and Julie around to help almost as thankful as I was that we were able to have great childcare for Hawk with our nanny Morgan. Speaking of Morgan, it was a trial by fire as with in five hours of arriving in the paddock she had an encounter with a slightly intoxicated mechanic from another team who wandered into our RV and created a scene late at night! Morgan gets full marks for not quitting on the spot! The all-new Junior Cup definitely didn t start out how we had hoped. The class is based on the performance of the various machines balanced through the use of weight and rpm limits. That concept was put to the test with both Kawasaki and KTM coming up with new machines this year. I hate to be a whiner, but the performance advantage was painfully obvious and it was a bummer to see all the kids First Person/Opinion: on Yamahas suffer as a result. Despite this I was really proud of the way that Cory rode. He managed a fifth place (first Yamaha rider) in Race One and after an amazing save on the back straight in Race Two he finished ninth. I m confident MotoAmerica will straighten out the rules to make for some better racing! On the upside, it was great to see MP13 Racing alumni Jamie Astudillo on the podium! Friday my mechanic/pal Josh Alverson showed up and started getting my YZF-R1 ready for Stock This class only runs on Saturday and Sunday, so I was really glad for the extra day to make sure we had everything together. Saturday morning our first 25-minute session was challenging for me. I felt rusty and awkward and it seemed like my bike wanted me off. Afterwards I realized I d basically turned off all traction control and wheelie control accidentally. Oops! I ended up seventh out of 11 people, which is definitely not where I felt like I should ve been! That evening we had our first qualifying session and even though I dropped a bunch of time I actually lost another position. I was sure I could ve gone faster, but I made the mistake of running off the last turn and basically lost my last two laps. Sunday morning we faced LOTS of rain. I was pretty nervous about racing the Yamaha R1 in the rain, but it wasn t so bad. I was surprised to find that it was actually friendlier than some 600s I ve ridden! We finally gridded up at 4:00 p.m. on a very wet track. My race was pretty lonely, I ended up sixth. So, while it wasn t the most impressive first race back, it wasn t a full disaster, either. The first race weekend of the year is always challenging and this year with a fourmonth-old baby in tow it was even harder. The next round I ll be at is Road America, one of my favorites. I feel pretty sure that I ll have a lot of the kinks worked out and be ready to do better! 13 X An EX The lead up to the start of the 2018 MotoAmerica race season was rough for me. It all started at Auto Club Speedway a few days before I was scheduled to get on a plane for a Yamaha and Bridgestone media event at UMC before going to Road Atlanta and COTA for the first two rounds of the series. I was following a coaching client during a Fastrack day, making sure I was being courteous in traffic, which usually isn't a problem. I got through a few guys entering the infield at Turn Three, then lined up the next lapper to execute a pass on the outside in Turn Four a long, fast, sweeping left turn taken in fourth gear. I usually short-shift from second to fourth gear and pin the throttle, then manage the slide by slowly reducing lean angle as the corner opens up. Which means you have to choose your trajectory very early. So, I see the guy ahead is staying shallow, which opens up the outside for me, then I go about my business while making sure I had enough margin in case the guy ahead made a mistake. But apparently I didn't leave enough margin. The rider I was passing missed a shift in the lefthand corner, stood the bike up, and turned right, into my path just as I got to his rear wheel. I saw it happening and quickly changed my line, but could not completely avoid clipping him. The impact ripped the left handlebar out of my hand and sent me off the highside of the bike and onto the ground at around 100 mph; the rider was able to continue without crashing. I landed on my left side, with most of the impact taken on my left knee and forearm. I slid, then tumbled, and eventually came to a stop in the grass on the outside of the track. I got up and limped to the side of the track and sat on the Armco barrier, taking inventory of the damage. The left forearm of my leathers had split wide open where a seam failed, and I had a lot of pain in my forearm and elbow. My knee was also really painful, but not nearly as bad as my arm. I was thinking, "I quit racing so I didn't have to crash anymore." But there 74 Roadracing World, June 2018 I was on the side of the track, holding my seriously torn-up left arm! Making it worse, I was scheduled to give one of my childhood heroes, skateboard icon Tony Hawk, a two-seat Superbike ride the next week at Road Atlanta. The session was red-flagged so the EMTs could get to me. My arm was on fire by then, and they hauled me over to the infield care center where I was evaluated and told to go to the hospital for X-rays and wound care. Ademar Nunes from Fastrack Riders took me to the hospital and hung out with me until my sister Natalie showed up after fetching my van and bike from the track. The folks at the Kaiser Permanente ER in Fontana got me into X-ray and placed in a room pretty quickly. I didn't have a fracture, but I had ground my arm down deep enough that I had an abrasion on the capsule around my elbow joint. It was not entertaining when the orthopedic surgeon stuck his index finger in my arm to examine the outside of joint! I was numb and loaded on Norco at that point, but it still hurt like hell! With the exam done and the wound flushed out, they put 10 stitches in my arm, shot me up with an antibiotic, gave me prescriptions for antibiotics and pain meds along with a referral, and sent me on my way. The first night was horrible, but things started to improve the next day. I was really motivated to be able to ride at Atlanta, so I went into full racer recovery mode. First was the follow-up with a doctor on Monday, then I went to my physical therapist for treatment on my arm. I bailed on the Yamaha/Bridgestone media event (we recruited Adam Waheed to substitute for me instead), and changed my flights so I could consult with racing doctor Tom Bryan and get more treatment (Left and Left, Top) When a seam fails and leathers explode upon impact. (Above) Eight days after Chris Ulrich's ugly crash at Fontana, Tony Hawk (right) thanks him for an exciting two-seat Superbike ride at Road Atlanta. before heading to Atlanta. I kind of felt like a motorcycle racer again. The moment of truth came on Friday morning at Road Atlanta. I had five two-up rides scheduled for the day and I was determined to make it happen. But, as always with two-seat rides, I made safety a priority. So I had Dave Anthony on standby in case I didn't feel I could safely complete the rides. The hardest part of the process was getting my arm into my leathers, but it was all good once that was done. My plan for Friday was to roll out on my sighting lap and see how I felt. Everything was fine, so we loaded the first passenger and off I went. I completed the five rides, which included a timed lap with race car driver Katherine Legge. The activity actually helped push a lot of the swelling out of my hand and forearm. My arm felt better after the rides than before! So that leads us to the main event for me, on Saturday Tony Hawk's ride on the back of the two-seat Superbike with me at the controls. I've given over 1,100 rides to media reps, athletes, celebrities, and a ton of fans since taking over the program in 2004, and I enjoyed being able to share our sport with all of them, but this ride was different. I skated when I was kid and grew up watching all of the early Bones Brigade videos with my older brother. I have a lot of fun memories that involve skateboarding. So maybe it was a bit of nostalgia. Whatever it was, I was babbling about my skateboarding past when Tony and I met in the pit. I managed to get it together after a few minutes and we got him signed in and suited up. As expected, Tony Hawk's presence attracted a lot of attention around the pit, so we had to hide him in the rider's lounge of the truck to give him a break. The MotoAmerica series and bein Sports were filming a spot, so Tony was the first passenger on and we did a full, timed lap at 1:45; it's tough to rip a fast time with a 6-foot-something guy on the back of the bike, but being an athlete, he picked everything up really quickly and turned out to be a great passenger. I was really proud to be able to share our sport with one of my favorite athletes of all time, and I'm really thankful for the opportunity. I gave four more rides to great passengers that day, including X-Games Skateboarding Gold Medalist Elliot Sloan, who I think I have convinced to attend a track day with me. I also gave a ride to Brooke Martin, the wife of M4 Performance Exhaust V.P. Kyle Martin. We had to talk her into the ride, but she had fun! Tony Hawk and Elliot Sloan going for rides is part of a bigger effort by MotoAmerica to expose motorcycle road racing to different demographics. They were there doing demonstrations on a vert half-pipe in the Fan Zone, which also had all sorts of other cool stuff to engage fans. I think it's really great. Anyway, Saturday at Road Atlanta was the end of eight gnarly, stressful days that started good, went completely wonky, but then ended really great. I'm glad and relieved that it all worked out. There were also a bunch of races that went on that weekend, but I'm out of room, so you'll have to turn to pages 42 and 48 to read how my riders did at Road Atlanta and COTA. I'll have an update about my adventures in my next column. Until next time, I hope to see you at the track! RW
