The Hawks battled back from a double-digit deficit but couldn t close the deal at American University, falling to the Eagles on Monday afternoon. OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE MEN S BASKETBALL QUICK FACTS SUSTAINED SUCCESS: After finishing the season before at its best season in two decades - Maryland Eastern Shore basketball followed up with a run through the season. The Hawks won double-digit games in consecutive seasons for the first time since doing it four years in a row from through Eastern Shore s 28 wins over two seasons are its most since the and seasons when the Hawks won 29 games. COPELAND S COURT: Senior forward Bakari Copeland was the Hawks top returning scorer from last season (10.5 PPG) and has stepped it up in the early portion of this year. Copeland ranks inside the top 15 in the MEAC with 13.4 PPG, shooting.403 from the floor. Copeland has scored in double figures in nine of 12 games thus far, including a season-high 21 in the opener at George Washington. DEADLY DINO: Junior guard Ryan Andino is coming into his own as Eastern Shore s top sharpshooter. The MEAC Rookie of the Year leads the team with 13.7 PPG, good for top-15 MEAC, and his.430 shooting percentage beyond the arc puts him inside the top 10 in the league. Andino has eclipsed the 20-point threshold three times this season, including a career-high 27 points (8-10 3PT) at Wichita State on Nov. 20. POINT MEN: The Hawks have one of the top point guard tandems in the MEAC between Logan McIntosh and Thomas Rivera. Junior transfer McIntosh is top-five in the league with 3.8 assists per game, while senior Rivera ranks top-10 with 3.1 helpers per contest. Thanks to McIntosh and Rivera, Eastern Shore finds itself ranked in the top half of the MEAC at 12.4 assists per game. The Hawks will play just three home games against 12 on the road before beginning MEAC play. The longest trip came at the end of November when the Hawks began at Boston College, then after a pitstop in Princess Anne spent 11 days out west at Wichita State, Colorado State, Louisiana Tech, and Southeastern Louisiana. Eastern Shore caps the 2016 calendar year on a six-game road trip having already played at Virginia Tech, Central Florida, Michigan, and Amerian, finishing at the two-game Sun Bowl Invitational at UTEP. This is Eastern Shore s first trip to Texas since visiting Rice on Nov. 20, 2011 (L 81-49). MINE COLLAPSE: After starting the season 2-1, UTEP has lost its last six games dating back to Nov. 20. December has been especially cruel to the Miners as they have lost four games by a combined 24 points. UTEP last played on Saturday, falling at home to Northern Arizona. The Miners are 1-4 at home and looking for their first Haskins Center win since the season opener against Division III Louisiana College. THE ONE TO WATCH: Senior guard Dominic Artis has been Mr. Everything for the Miners in the first two months, leading the team in rebounds (6.3), assists (8.4, 1st in C-USA), and steals (2.7, 1st in C-USA), while ranking second in points (14.8). The former Oregon standout earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors on Nov. 21 after averaging 19.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in three games at the Gildan Charleston Classic. THE LONG WAY AROUND: Tim Floyd s first full-time assistant coaching job came at UTEP in the 1980s, and his coaching journey came full circle when he was hired as head coach in Floyd has led the Miners to a pair of NIT appearances in six-plus seasons at the helm. The Hattesburg, Miss. native has accumulated over 450 wins as a collegiate coach, making stops at Idaho, New Orleans, Iowa State, and Southern Cal along the way. 4 Winston-Salem State ( ): Collins took over the Rams program for eight seasons, leading the team to consistent success in the CIAA in his last four years. In that time, Collins went with the Rams, including two trips to the Division II Regional First Round. Overall, Collins posted a record at WSSU. Hampton [HC] ( ): Collins was promoted to head coach of the Pirates for four seasons, winning MEAC Coach of the Year in 2005 and earning an NCAA tournament berth in Collins lost to Monmouth in the Opening Round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing his career at Hampton with a overall record. Hampton [AC] ( ): Collins spent seven seasons as an assistant coach for the Pirates. In 2001, Hampton upset the 2-seed Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA tournament, only the 4th victory for a 15-seed in NCAA history. Bobby Collins is entering his third season as the head coach at Maryland Eastern Shore. He was named the 19th head coach of the Hawks on April 8, In his first season, the Hawks concluded their year with an overall record, the most wins by a UMES men s basketball team in 41 years. Though they suffered through a first-round exit in the College Insider Tournament (CIT), the Hawks still managed to earn a postseason berth for the first time since The winning mark was the first above.500 record for a UMES team since the season, while the thirdplace finish in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is the best since that same year. The incredible turnaround year also saw widespread recognition of the accomplishments in Princess Anne with Collins winning MEAC Coach of the Year, as well as freshman Ryan Andino winning MEAC Rookie of the Year. Michael Myers also earned numerous awards, including Riley Wallace Player of the Year. Collins was named 2015 Ben Jobe Coach of the Year. Head Coach Bobby Collins Hometown: Southern Pines, N.C. College: Eastern Kentucky, 91 Experience: 3rd Season at Eastern Shore 15th overall as collegiate head coach In his second season at the helm of the Hawks, he again won double-digit games and produced a First-Team All-MEAC player in Dominique Elliott who was named to two All- American lists. His recruit, Dontae Caldwell, earned All-Rookie honors from the conference as well. Collins has a career record of as a head coach over 14 season at NCAA Division I & II programs. A 1991 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Collins was a four-year starter on the men s basketball team where he was named to the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) All-Freshman Team and Honorable Mention All-OVC as a senior. Following his graduation from EKU, Collins played professional basketball in Finland, where he earned MVP honors overseas in the Helsinki Classic Tournament in The son of two non-denominational ministers, Collins is the youngest of 10 siblings. He graduated from Pinecrest High School and guided his men s basketball squad to a 38-9 record over his junior and senior seasons. OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE MEN S BASKETBALL ASSISTANT COACHES Associate Head Coach Clifford Reed enters his 3rd season as the Associate Head Coach at Eastern Shore. Reed came to Eastern Shore with considerable experience in the MEAC, having previously served as the head coach at his alma mater, Bethune- Cookman, for over ten years from 2001 to During his tenure with the Wildcats, Reed won 125 games, including winning seasons in each of his last three years. In , Reed won the MEAC Coach of the Year award as the Wildcats set a program record with 21 wins. Most recently, Reed has been an assistant coach with Savannah State and Georgia Southern for the past two seasons. Reed played two seasons at Bethune-Cookman before graduating in Reed was named to the All- MEAC Second Team after his senior season. Adrian Ace Custis begins his 3rd season as an assistant coach at Eastern Shore. This year will mark the third season for Custis as an assistant at the collegiate level. Custis joined Eastern Shore after having spent the previous season as an assistant coach at Virginia State. Assistant Coach Custis enjoyed a long playing career in professional basketball. Custis began with the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA, before playing overseas. The Eastville, Va. native racked up over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in four years at Virginia Tech. Assistant Coach Ed Huckaby enters his 1st season as an assistant coach at Eastern Shore after stops as a Division I assistant coach and head coach at the high school and postgraduate levels. Huckaby was head postraduate coach at Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Va. for six seasons. During his tenure, 72 players signed Division I scholarships, including current Hawks Ryan Andino and Ahmad Frost. Last year Huckaby was head coach at Woodside High School (Newport News, Va.). He has also been an assistant at Bethel High School (Hampton, Va.), Wright State, Hampton (with and under Bobby Collins), and Owens C.C. (Findlay, Ohio). Huckaby served four years in the U.S. Air Force ( ).
