This will be the first basketball meeting between the two schools. EIU does have a 1-1 record against the Aztecs in football winning the last match-up with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo at the helm in August of On the hardwood, EIU won its home opener on Friday night beating IUPUI to improve to 1-2 on the season. LEWIS SCORES A CAREER HIGH Terrell Lewis scored a career high 25 points on Friday night as the Panthers beat IUPUI, Lewis was 7-of-9 from 3-point range but his two biggest shots came from the free throw line with six seconds remaining that gave EIU the lead. Lewis moved into fifth place on the EIU career 3-pointers made list as he now has 202. He needs seven more to tie Mark Polite for fourth at EIU. Lewis added five assists as he moved his EIU career leading assists mark to 474. He now has 978 career points and would become the 37th member of the EIU 1,000 point club. PANTHERS BENCH PRODUCTION Eastern Illinois finished Friday night s win with a 20-4 bench scoring advantage as the Panthers had five different players score off the bench led by Ray Crossland s eight points. EIU has finished all three games this season with a scoring advantage in bench production. For the season EIU is averaging seven points more per game off the bench than its opponents. This season EIU is averaging 17.6 points and 12.4 rebounds per game off the bench. He was a long time assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level and served as the interim head coach at UNLV to complete the 2004 season posting a 6-4 record and taking the team to the finals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament along with an NIT appearance. In 2001 Spoonhour was named the National Junior College Coach of the Year leading Wabash Valley College to the NJCAA National Championship with a 36-1 record. He is the son of the late legendary coach Charlie Spoonhour. Spoonhour played basketball at Pittsburg State earning his degree in He was an honorable mention All-Conference selection. He has assistant coaching stops at Central Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Missouri and Texas San Antonio. Spoonhour s career mark is ; at the NCAA Division I level. His EIU record is with an OVC mark of Spoonhour led the program to its first NCAA Division I postseason win on March 17, 2015 with a win at Oakland in the CIT. LAST TIME OUT Terrell Lewis scored a career high 25 points including a pair of free throws in the final six seconds as EIU won its home opener, 80-79, over IUPUI. Lewis was 7-of- 9 from 3-point range in the game as the Panthers shot 51 percent from the field. Jajuan Starks and D Angelo Jackson both finished in double figures. Starks pulled down a game high eight rebounds. SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE Brian Dutcher is in his first season as the head coach at San Diego State. The Aztecs are off to a 2-1 start following a Friday night win over McNeese State. Malik Pope, Trey Kell and Devin Watson all average in double figures for an Aztecs team that went last season. SDSU returns three starters from last season. SERIES INFORMATION This will be the first meeting between Eastern Illinois and San Diego State in men s basketball. The Panthers are 5-6 all-time against current members of the Mountain West Conference, however EIU has never played a team that was in the Mountain West Conference at the time of the game. The Panthers wins are over Boise State (1979, 2002), Colorado State (1987), Hawaii (1998) and San Jose State (1949). Starks finished in double figures for the third straight game as he scored 16 points in the win over IUPUI. He added a game high eight rebounds as he currently leads the Panthers in both scoring (14.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg). D Angelo Jackson scored 11 points against IUPUI giving the junior college transfer his second straight game with 11 points. Jackson once again was able to do some damage getting to the foul line where he went 5-of-6 from the stripe. This season Jackson has scored 13 of his 31 points from the foul line. Ray Crossland scored eight points off the bench against IUPUI on Friday night going 3-of-4 from the field. Crossland had scored eight points in the opener at Nebraska before being held out of the scoring column at Western Illinois. In addition to his scoring Crossland added two steals against IUPUI. Last season he was the team leader with 44 steals which ranked 3rd in the OVC. EIU had its first positive assist-to-turnover ratio in a game this season finishing the IUPUI contest with 12 assists and ten turnovers. Last season EIU was one of the best in the OVC in assist-to-turnover ratio finishing with a plus 1.2 ratio averaging 15.3 assists per game and only 12.8 turnovers per game. This season EIU has 11 assists, 16 turnovers at Nebraska and 12 assists, 19 turnovers at Western Illinois. EIU senior forward Muusa Dama recorded his first blocked shot of the season on Friday against IUPUI. Last season Dama was the OVC leader in blocked shots setting the EIU single season record with 61 blocks. A junior college transfer last season, Dama needs two blocks to move into a tie for ninth on the EIU career list with Todd Bergmann and Ousmane Cisse. Eastern Illinois finished with eight team steals on Friday against IUPUI as the Panthers are averaging 8.3 steals per game to rank third in the Ohio Valley Conference. EIU had a season high ten steals in the opener at Nebraska. Eastern Illinois shot 51.1 percent in the home opening win over IUPUI. It marked the first time in over a year that the Panthers had shot 50 percent or better in a game. The last time was Nov. 11, 2016 in last year s season opening home win over Saint Francis (Ill.). On Friday against IUPUI, the Panthers were 24-of-47.
