Heart of Texas Bowl WHEN: DECEMBER 1, 2012 WHERE: COPPERAS COVE, BULLDAWG STADIUM KICKOFF: 7:00 P.M. VS. Saturday s game will be the inaugural NCAA Division II Heart of Texas Bowl, pitting Southern Arkansas against McMurry at 7 p.m. in Copperas Cove, Texas, at Copperas Cove High School s Bulldawg Stadium. The Heart of Texas Bowl has existed for a number of years as a junior college game and is adding the Division II game this year, which will be played in conjunction with the 12th annual junior college bowl that features the Navarro Bulldogs and the Georgia Military Bulldogs at 11 a.m. The bowl is sponsored by C.H.A.M.P.S., Communities Helping Americans Mature Progress and Succeed, a school-based program aimed at educating students about the dangers of the abuse of illicit drugs and alcohol, and was founded by Copperas Cove Head Coach and Athletic Director Jack Welch. The Coaches Hired as the 19th head coach at Southern Arkansas in December 2008, Bill Keopple (Central Arkansas, 1982) is in his fourth season with the Muleriders, where he is now overall. He previously had spent six years as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, compiling a record, five consecutive state playoff appearances, two 6A South Conference titles, and 6A state championships in 2006 and In 1996 he served as athletic director and head coach at Newport High School, guiding the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of in his seven years at the high school level. Keopple has 18 years of experience as an assistant in the collegiate ranks. He spent the 2002 season on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burn s staff at Tulsa, coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator. He served two years under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. Keopple was an honorable mention All-District and All-AIC selection for Central Arkansas and got his start there as a graduate assistant in He spent 14 years with the Bears coaching the offensive line and was offensive coordinator from McMurry s Hal Mumme (Tarleton State, 1973) is currently in his fourth year as head coach of the War Hawks, and has compiled an overall mark of in 22 years as a head coach on the collegiate level. Mumme has turned McMurry s fortunes around, guiding the school to its first-ever NCAA Division III playoff appearance in 2011, a final season ranking of 15th, and being named the South Region coach of the year. Prior to coaching the War Hawks, Mumme spent four seasons ( ) as head coach at New Mexico State. He got his start in coaching in 1976 as an assistant at Moody (Texas) High School, before spending a year in 1979 as head coach at Aransas Pass (Texas) High School. He then moved to the collegiate ranks as an assistant at West Texas State in , before serving as offensive coordinator at Texas-El Paso for four years ( ). From there, he took the head coach s position at Copperas Cove (Texas) High School from Mumme entered the collegiate ranks for good the following year, becoming head coach at Iowa Wesleyan College. He left after three seasons to take the head job at Valdosta State (Ga.), compiling a record over five years ( ) and leading the Blazers to the 1996 Gulf South Conference championship. Mumme then entered the Division I ranks, serving as head coach at Kentucky from , leading the Wildcats to back-to-back bowl appearances in 1999 (Outback Bowl) and 2000 (Music City Bowl). After a break from coaching, he accepted the head position at Southeastern Louisiana, starting the program from scratch and staying there in 2003 and 2004 before heading to New Mexico State. Internet: Exclusive web TV at Mulerider Football History Southern Arkansas has had a football program since 1911, but will have to wait until the 2017 season to truly commemorate 100 years of Mulerider football. SAU didn t field a team from and , a total of seven years, making 2012 the 95th football season. SAU was founded in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School, with G.R. Turrentine serving as the inaugural head coach in The team played only two games that first year, losing both in Magnolia by shutouts, 19-0 to Texarkana (Texas) High School and 9-0 to Camden High School. The team was commonly called the Magnolia Aggies until the early 1920 s, but Turrentine, who went on to coach for a total of seven years, is credited with providing the moniker of Muleriders following the team s final game of the 1912 season, a Thanksgiving date at Fordyce High School. A few days after that game, members of the team rode mules to Coach Turrentine s home to discuss their final game and he greeted them with My Mule Riders. That was the first known time the term was used, and the name eventually stuck, changing from two words to the compound Muleriders. SAU is now in its 95th year of football since the first season of play in 1911, and is currently 9-6 all-time in Great American Conference games and against teams currently in the GAC. The Series (1-0, McMurry) Saturday s inaugural NCAA Division II C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl will be only the second meeting between Southern Arkansas and McMurry, coming 56 years after their only previous engagement in The Muleriders traveled to Abiliene, Texas, for their next to last game of that season, dropping a decision to the War Hawks. 3 Bill Keopple enters his fourth season as head football coach at Southern Arkansas, hired in December 2008 as the 19th coach to lead the Muleriders. Keopple has accumulated 28 years of coaching experience, including his first stint as a head coach on the collegiate level at SAU. He served 18 years as an assistant in the college ranks with stops at Tulsa, Arkansas, Boise State and Central Arkansas. Prior to coming to Southern Arkansas, Keopple served six years ( ) as head coach at Arkansas High School in Texarkana. His teams were during his six seasons, advancing to the state playoffs the last five and winning consecutive state championships in 2006 and Keopple s 2005 and 2006 Razorback teams were 6A South Conference champions. He was honored in 2006 as the 6A State Farm Coach of the Year, as well as 6A Outstanding Coach by the National Football Foundation in both 2006 and 2007, and was selected to serve on the Arkansas high school football All- Star coaching staffs in 2004 and Before taking over the reins at Texarkana, Keopple was at the University of Tulsa in 2002 on former Arkansas defensive coordinator Keith Burns staff. He spent that season coaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordinator for the Golden Hurricane. Keopple served as an assistant under Houston Nutt at Arkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise State in 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. The Razorbacks were 1998 SEC Western Division champions, finishing 9-3 and playing Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Arkansas had the fifth-ranked rushing defense in the nation that season and was ranked seventh in total defense. The 1999 Razorbacks went 8-4 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl, finishing the season 12th in rushing defense and 17th in total defense. Keopple went to Boise State from Newport High School where he was head coach and athletic director in He guided the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 season, giving him an overall mark of in his seven years as a head coach on the high school level. A native of Little Rock, Keopple is the son of Hall of Fame high school coach C.W. Keopple. A 1976 graduate of Parkview High School, he played on the 1974 and 1976 state championship teams and was an all-state and super team selection his senior season. During his playing days at Central Arkansas, Keopple was a member of two conference championship teams and was an honorable mention selection on both the All-NAIA District 17 and All-AIC teams. He served as a team captain his senior season in which the Bears were ranked first in the nation with an undefeated record and advanced to the national playoffs. Keopple has been associated with 18 championship teams as a player and coach, and has recruited extensively on the collegiate level in 13 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. Keopple, 53, has been married 30 years to the former Marsha Lee Belew of Beebe, and they have a son, Landon, who currently serves as an assistant on the Mulerider staff, and a daughter, Brittany. 13

4 Record Watch 1 Southern Arkansas junior quarterback Tyler Sykora shattered the Mulerider record book this year, setting five career school marks, six season records, including five of his own, and tying one of his own single-game records. Depending on his passing performance Saturday, he s also on pace to set the new season record for completion percentage, which he currently holds (.605) from last year. The southpaw currently owns 15 school records, including five career, seven season, and three single-game records. Sykora currently holds the SAU career marks in passing attempts (769), completions (456), yards (6,052) and touchdowns (54), and yards of total offense (5,956). He has season passing records in attempts (356), completions (221), yards (3,081), completion percentage (.605) and touchdowns (30), and in total offense - plays (385) and yards (3,065). His single-game records include passing yards (520) and touchdowns (5), and total yards of offense (482). Record Watch 2 Mulerider junior running back Mark Johnson s nine rushing touchdowns this season allowed him to set the school career record in that category with 28. He accomplished that despite missing two games this year due to an injury, and has amassed 860 yards on the ground this season after rushing for 1,009 yards and 13 touchdowns a year ago.
