2 David Franklin Head Coach Tenth Season the david franklin file Born: Sept. 15, 1962 Hometown: Haynesville, LA Wife: Jennifer Children: Trent, Erin, and Toby College: Louisiana Tech, 1992 Coaching Expierence Asst. Coach Haynesville 2002-Present Head Coach Haynesville david franklin notables When David Franklin took over as head coach after the retirement of his father and long time Haynesville coach Red Franklin, he knew what it would take to keep up the tradition of the storied Tornado program. He has not disappointed many. Franklin has lead the Golden Tornado to 83 wins, 9 playoff appearances, 5 district championships and a state championship in Franklin has also lead the Golden Tornado to victories over storied programs such as Oak Grove, Kentwood, and South Plaquemines. Franklin was selected as the 2009 Class 1-A Coach of the Year by the LSWA. But, Frankllin does not flaunt his accomplishments to others. Instead, he credits his success to his staff and players. That is what makes Franklin a successful coach. Not that he constantly puts out great teams every year but that he teaches those great teams that there are more important things in life such as getting an education and becoming a man. Franklin started his coaching career when he became an assistant coach at Haynesville in He has been part of 5 state championship teams as an assistant coach at Haynesville. Franklin held the duty of offensive coordinator on the 2000 state championship team that defeated Southern Lab in New Orleans. Winning did not come easy for Franklin. His first two seasons were marred by learning curves for both he and his team. However, Franklin has never failed to reach the playoffs during his stint as head coach. On average, Franklin has reached the third round of the playoffs during his head coaching career. Not much has changed at Haynesville since Franklin took over. He once told a reporter that they like to keep things old school and that is exactly what he has done. He has managed to take a team that was ruled by his legendary father and make it his own, but without much change Overall Record at Haynesville 46-5 Record vs. district opponents Record in Memorial Stadium Record in road games 23-2 Record in District home games 23-3 Record in district road games 16-8 Record in state playoffs 11-3 Record in home playoff games 9 Playoff Appearances 5 Number of wins over coaches who have won a state championship* 5 District 1-1A championships wins seasons 1 State Championship The david franklin record Year School Overall Record District Record 2002 Haynesville Haynesville Haynesville Haynesville Haynesville Haynesville Haynesville * Haynesville Haynesville Haynesville TOTALS (10th year) * - State Champions * - Came against David Currier (twice), Vic Dalrymple, Cyril Crtuchfield and Ferrante Dominique

Notebook The Oldest Series in the State The Haynesville-Homer series is the oldest prep football series in the state of Louisiana. The Golden Tornado and the Pelicans have played since 1907 with Homer winning the first game The two teams have played some great games in the past including the 1971 Class 2-A State Championship game played in Homer. The score was tied 7-7 at the end of the game but Haynesville was declared the winner with the most first downs (11-9). Haynesville also pulled off an upset in 2008 as Dextrell French caught a touchdown pass from Lance Reeves with just under 30 seconds left in the game to lead the Golden Tornado to a victory. A Carriage Ride to Homer When Haynesville traveled to Homer for the first game in 1907, it was recorded that the team rode by horse carriages and it took almost all day to get to Homer. Haynesville Brings Record in Road Games under Franklin to Homer Haynesville travels to Homer with a record in road games under David Franklin. The last time that Haynesville lost on the road was on October 1, 2010 when North DeSoto defeated the Golden Tornado Franklin has 83 wins at Haynesville; He s Averaging 8 Wins Per Season Haynesville coach David Franklin recorded his 83rd victory last Friday night in the win over Magnolia. Now in his tenth year at Haynesville, Franklin is in his 115 games with the Golden Tornado. Only one coach in Haynesville history has won more games than the current head coach and his name happens to be Franklin also. Alton Red Franklin, father of David, currently holds a record which also ranks him second in the Louisiana High School 200 Wins Category. Field Position Plays Another Role in Haynesville s Win Haynesville s field position averaged on the Haynesville 49-yard line last Friday night, giving the Tornado a huge advantage on the start of each drive. Magnolia only crossed into Haynesville twice last Friday as the Panthers average drive start was at the Magnolia 28-yardline. Haynesville-Homer Ties Homer athletic director and former head coach Wayne Volentine was an assistant coach at Haynesville. Volentine coached under legendary Haynesville coach Alton Red Franklin. Current Haynesville assistant coach Tony Gantt played at Homer and was an assistant coach for the Pelicans up until last year.
