1 Many and Moss Bluff claim junior high state softball titles By: Jimmy Touchet The Many Junior High Tigers defeated the LaSalle Junior High Tigers 5-2 for the small school division junior high softball state championship while the Moss Bluff Broncos knocked off S.J. Welsh Colts 11-3 in route to claiming the large school junior high softball state championship at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) University Complex Intramural Fields on Saturday, March 24. Twenty four schools from across the state of Louisiana participated in the two day tournament with ten schools competed in the small school division while fourteen schools competed in the large school division of the 2018 Louisiana State Game s Junior High State Softball Tournament. Small School Division Bracket play recap The Many Tigers defeated the Woodlawn Middle School Warriors 4-3 using the international tie-breaker rule in the game s final inning in the semifinal round while LaSalle knocked off Bayou Chicot Demons 6-5 the other small school semifinal round game. In the quarterfinal round, Many defeated the Church Point Middle School Cubs 11-3, Woodlawn claimed a 4-2 win over the Iota Middle School Bulldogs, LaSalle beat the Claiborne Christian Lady Crusaders 7-1 and Bayou Chicot bested Caldwell Parish Junior High 9-5. In the opening round, Bayou Chicot defeated Richland Lady Reds 4-2 while Iota claimed a 20-3 victory over Vidalia Middle School Vikings. Caldwell Parish, Claiborne Christian, Many, LaSalle, Woodlawn and Church Point earned first round byes. Large School Division Bracket play recap The Moss Bluff Broncos defeated the Pineville Junior High Vols 4-3 in the semifinal round while S.J. Welsh Colts claimed a 3-2 victory over the S.B. Martin Cougars in the other large school semifinal round game. In the quarterfinal round, Moss Bluff defeated the Haughton Middle School Buccaneers 10-2, Pineville handed the West Ridge Middle School Patriots their first loss of the season 2-1, S.J. Welsh claimed a 2-1 win over the Sterlington Middle School Panthers and S.B. Martin knocked off the North DeSoto Middle School Griffins 6-0. In the opening round, Haughton defeated the Lee Junior High Tigers 12-7; Pineville claimed a 4-0 victory over the Good Hope Middle School Colonels; West Ridge eliminated the Ruston Junior High Bearcats 15-0; Sterlington bested Brame Middle School Gators 5-4; J.B. Martin defeated the Fountainbleau Middle School Hurricanes 9-0 and North DeSoto knocked off the Calhoun Middle School Chieftains Moss Bluff and S.J. Welsh earned first round byes by finishing in first place in the respective pools.
