7 2003 Season Preview R E T U R N I N G S T A T I ST I CA L L E A D E R S 2002 RUSHING: ATT. YARDS AVG. TD Joseph Addai Marcus Randall Matt Mauck PASSING: ATT. COMP INT. TD YARDS PCT. Marcus Randall , Matt Mauck RECEIVING: REC. YARDS AVG. AVG/GAME TD Michael Clayton Devery Henderson Skyler Green Offense A year ago, the Tigers went into the season with a pair of proven running backs to go with a couple of talented, but inexperienced quarterbacks.this year, the table is turned as LSU heads into 2003 with a pair of quarterbacks in Matt Mauck and Marcus Randall, who combined to start all but one game a year ago.gone from the backfield, however, are LaBrandon Toefield and Domanick Davis, both of whom were drafted in the fourth round of the NFL Draft last spring.stepping in to the fill those shoes are talented, yet inexperienced runners in Joseph Addai and Shyrone Carey. In Addai, the Tigers have a player who can run both inside and outside as well as having good pass-catching ability. Carey, who will also double as a kickoff and punt returner, is a shifty runner who has explosive speed on the outside.both Addai and Carey will have to become accustomed to being every-down backs for the Tigers after seeing spot duty for LSU in Addai, a Freshman All-SEC pick in 2002,rushed for 438 yards and four TDs a year ago, while Carey had 97 yards on 17 attempts. Brandon Hurley will be LSU's fullback. Skyler Green Andrew Whitworth Joseph Addai Mauck returns for his junior season after leading LSU to a 5-1 start last year before suffering a season-ending foot injury against Florida. Mauck connected on 63-of-130 passes for 782 yards, nine TDs and only two interceptions before going down with the injury. Mauck, a natural runner at the quarterback position, used the spring to become a better pocket passer. Randall, also a dangerous scrambler at quarterback, stepped in and guided the Tigers to an 8-5 overall mark and a berth in the Cotton Bowl. Randall threw for 1,173 ya rds and seven TDs by completing 87-of-181 passes. Randall, who improved his field vision as well as his passing ability during the spring, rushed for 348 yards and two TDs. TACKLES: TOTAL SOLO ASST. SACKS TFL (YDS) Lionel Turner Chad Lavalais Randall Gay "I think both Matt and Marcus need to understand the concepts of what we are trying at the quarterback position," LSU coach Nick Saban said. " You put a guy through a lot of changes when he tries to learn an offensive system.you start with terminology then expand into game management, being able to execute, and being able to let the people around you play effectively. All of those are important things in the pro g ression of these young quarterbacks. How well t h ey can do that is going to be a real key to having success." The lack of experience in the backfield will be offset with yet another talented group of receivers, highlighted by the versatile Michael Clayton, who earned Second-Team All-SEC honors after catching 57 passes for 749 yards and five TDs in Joining Clayton will be speedsters Devery Henderson and Bennie Brazell to go along with Skyler Green. Last year, Henderson led the Tigers with eight TD receptions despite missing the final two games of the season with a broken arm.the loss of Henderson last year opened the door for Green, as he stepped in and caught seven passes for 123 yards and a TD as Henderson's replacement. With a good mix of experience and youth at the skill positions on offense, saban expects a balanced offense for the Tigers in "We try to be balanced," Saban said. "We became more of a passing team in We ended up having one of the most prolific passing teams in the history of LSU football. We had good skill guys and a good quarterback. Last year, we tried to take pressure off of the quarterback so they wouldn't lose games because of their inexperience. "It is our goal offensively to have balance,to be able to run the ball when we need to but under no circumstances be conservative. This year, I think we have the best balance we have had. We don't have an established runner this year and if they start laying the ball all over the ground they will quit getting it." Whether it's a run or a pass, the play will take place behind one of the most dominating and physical offensive lines that LSU has put on the field.the Tigers return four of five starters on the offensive line, including First-Team All-SEC guard Stephen Peterman and F reshman All-America A n d rew Whitwo rt h. Joining Peterman and Whitworth as starters will be junior center Ben Wilkerson and senior tackle Rodney Reed, a First-Team Academic All-America in 2002.The left guard position could go to a pair of sophomores in Terrell McGill or Rudy Niswanger. The final spot on the line will be held by senior tight end Eric Edwards, a pla yer who gives the Tigers the combination of a good blocking and pass catching L S U F O O T B A L L M E D I A G U I D E

8 2003 Season Preview S Q U A D B R E A K D O W N Team Information Base Offense: Multiple Base Defense: 4-3 LETTERWINNERS RETURNING: Offense: 19 Defense: 18 Specialty: 1 TOTAL: 38 STARTERS RETURNING: Offense: 8 Defense: 7 Specialty: 1 TOTAL: 16 Defense Marquise Hiil (94) If one thing came out of spring practice it's that the LSU defense must develop the toughness and intensity that has become a trademark of Saban-coached teams.with seven returning starters on defense, the talent and experience is there for the Tigers to be able to have another outstanding season on the defensive side of the ball. Last year, LSU ranked among the best in the nation by allowing only 286 yards and 18 points per game. Heading the defense will be the front four, which is led by senior tackle Chad Lava l a i s and junior ends in Marquise Hill and M a rc u s S p e a r s. L avalais is considered to be as talented a player to play on defense for LSU, and he's entering his fourth season as a starter for the Ti g e r s. Spears and Hill both started last year as sophomores and a re both expected to have breakout years for LSU in S p e a r s, a c o nverted tight end, gives the Tigers an athletic and physical linem a n, while Hill is rangy and possesses extremely long arms with good technique. Kyle Williams and Melvin Olive r a re two players who will be in a playing rotation among the defensive front for the Ti g e r s. Over the past four years, the linebacker spot has been on the most experienced positions on the field for the Tigers. That won't be the case this season as junior Lionel Turner is the lone holdover for LSU from Turner, a fierce hitter, will make the calls for the defense this year after starting 12 games and finishing with 71 tackles, including 9.5 for losses, for the Tigers in Senior Jason LeDoux along with sophomore Cameron Vaughn and senior Eric Alexander will combine to play the other two linebacker positions.ledoux is an aggressive and knowledgeable player who will play inside along with Turner, while Vaughn and Alexander will share outside linebacker duties. The secondary will be led by All-America candidate Corey Webster, who led the SEC with seven interceptions in Webster will start at one cornerback spot with senior Randall Gay playing the other side of the field. Jack Hunt enters his second season as a starter at safety after being converted from wide receiver prior to the 2002 season.hunt started six games last year and finished with 58 tackles and a pair of sacks. "Jack has assumed a role of leadership," Saban said. "He has developed a lot of confidence in making checks and calls for the defense. I think the other players are responding to that because that gives them a certain security." Joining Hunt at safety will be senior Adrian Mayes and junior Travis Daniels. Ronnie Prude, a junior, is coming off an outstanding spring and will be LSU's fifth defensive back in nickel situations, while also giving the Tigers a quality backup at cornerback in the base defense. "We need to add depth on defense," Saban said. " We need a safety on defense and some depth at safety and we need a linebacker or two to add some depth to that position. A Second Team All-SEC selection in 2002, Jones has a career punting average of nearly 42 yards a punt. The placekicking duties are wide open entering fall camp as walk-ons Chad Gaudet and Andre Boagni will battle freshman Chris Jackson for the job. Gaudet and Boagni both went through spring practice last year after redshirting in 2002, while Jackson will be a true freshman for the Tigers this season.
