7 2004 Season Preview OFFENSE Justin Vincent LSU's offensive philosophy is pretty simple, get the ball in the best players hands and let them make plays. With a host of skill players returning for the Tigers, the offense, despite the loss of quarterback Matt Mauck to the NFL, should be in good hands. The Tigers return six starters from an offense that sets school records for points (475), first downs (298) and touchdowns scored (54). Heading the list of returning starters is 2003 Freshman All-America running back Justin Vincent, second-team All-America center Ben Wilkerson and 2004 preseason All-America tackle Andrew Whitworth. As a unit, the Tigers return 2,439 yards rushing and 23 of the teams' 24 rushing TDs from a year ago. On the other hand, the Tigers lose two of their top two receivers in Michael Clayton (78 rec., 1,079 yards, 10 TDs) and Devery Henderson (53 rec., 861 yards, 11 TDs). Doing the bulk of the passing last year for the Tigers was Mauck, a second-team All-SEC pick in 2003, who threw a school-record 28 touchdowns after completing 229 of 358 passes for 2,825 yards. QUARTERBACKS Senior Marcus Randall enters fall camp as the only quarterback on the roster to have a snap at the collegiate level to his credit. Randall has played in 22 during his career with six starts, which includes the Cotton Bowl game against Texas to cap the 2002 season. In 22 games, Randall has completed 114 of 223 passes for 1,583 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. Highlyregarded redshirt freshmen JaMarcus Russell and Matt Flynn both showed promise during the spring and enter fall camp in a battle for playing time for the Tigers. Both Russell and Flynn continue to learn the Tiger offense, while still getting a grasp for the speed of the college game. In Russell, the Tigers have a big-bodied quarterback with a big-time arm, who can throw the ball down the field as well as anyone in the game, while Flynn can run and throw with equal effectiveness. RUNNING BACKS Justin Vincent returns for his sophomore season in 2004 after setting an LSU freshman rushing record with 1,001 yards in Vincent, who was named MVP of both the SEC Championship Game and the Sugar Bowl, rushed for 201 yards and a pair of scores against Georgia in the SEC title game and then followed that with 117 yards and a TD against Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. Vincent will be joined in the backfield by junior Joseph Addai (520 yards, 2 TDs in 2003), sophomore Alley Broussard (389 yards, 4 TDs), senior Shyrone Carey (338 yards, 6 TDs) and sophomore Barrington Edwards (169 yards). Addai, who is considered the best of LSU's back in third-down situations, will likely split time at receiver for the Tigers in Broussard, who has trimmed 15 pounds from his frame from 2003, is a bruiser, who can get the tough yards between the tackles, while Carey is a speedster who has game-breaking ability. FULLBACKS Kevin Steltz returns as LSU's starter at fullback, while Shawn Jordan is expected to see plenty of action at the position after redshirting in 2003 as a true freshman. Steltz is a pure blocking fullback, while Jordan gives the Tigers a back that can be a threat both as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield. RETURNING STATISTICAL 2003 RUSHING: ATT. YARDS AVG. TD Justin Vincent 154 1, Joseph Addai Alley Broussard Shyrone Carey Barrington Edwards LEADERS PASSING: ATT. COMP INT. TD YARDS PCT. Marcus Randall RECEIVING: REC. YARDS AVG. AVG/GAME TD Skyler Green Joseph Addai David Jones Dwayne Bowe TACKLES: TOTAL SOLO ASST. INT. SACKS TFL (YDS) LaRon Landry Lionel Turner Travis Daniels "I won't make comparisons between this year's team and last year's team. We are not going to compete to the bar of what last year's team accomplished. We have to compete with the players we have now and get them to understand what they have to do every day." -- LSU coach Nick Saban WIDE RECEIVERS The loss of Michael Clayton and Devery Henderson leaves junior Skyler Green as the Tigers' top returning wide receiver. Last year, Green ranked third on the squad with 48 catches for 519 yards and five TDs, including the gamewinner against Georgia in September. Joining Green as a wideout for the Tigers will be sophomores Dwayne Bowe (9 rec., 106 yards in 2003) and Craig Davis (7 rec., 63 yards) and redshirt freshman Amp Hill. The groups of Tiger wideouts, while young, can be considered one of the offensive strengths for LSU. Bolstering the receiving corps will be a trio of talented true freshmen wideouts in Early Doucet, Xavier Carter and Lavelle Hawkins, all considered among the best in the nation at their position in high school. TIGHT END The Tigers return a pair of experienced players at tight end in senior Demetri Robinson and junior David Jones to go along with sophomore Keith Zinger. Last year, Jones caught 13 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown, while Zinger had three receptions for 31 yards. OFFENSIVE LINE Perhaps the strength of the Tiger offense will be that of the line, which will be led by senior center Ben Wilkerson, junior tackle Andrew Whitworth and junior guard Nate Livings. As a unit in 2003, the Tigers allowed only 22 sacks all season and they held their opponent without a sack in five of the final six regularseason games. Last year, Wilkerson earned second-team All-America honors from the Associated Press after starting all 14 games for the Tigers. In two years with the Tigers, Whitworth has started 27 games at tackle and has given up only five sacks, while being whistled for just 13 penalties. Whitworth, along with Wilkerson, have both been listed as preseason All-America selections for the Tigers entering the 2004 season. Livings started 10 games for the Tigers in 2003, missing four games midway through the year with a knee injury. Junior Rudy Niswanger and junior Terrell McGill both return as parttime starters for the Tigers and will be looked at to fill in for the departed Rodney Reed and Stephen Peterman on the line. The Tigers also received a boost when Brandon Washington was shifted from defensive line to offensive tackle during the spring. Washington showed a great deal of promise during the spring and will be counted on for added depth to the Tiger front L S U F O O T B A L L M E D I A G U I D E

8 DEFENSE The trademark of Saban-coached defenses has been one that puts constant pressure on the quarterback, while attempting to confuse the offense with disguised coverages and fronts. With the return of preseason All-America defensive end Marcus Spears to go along with six other starters, the Tigers should once again be among the best in the country. A year ago, the Tigers rode the nation's best defense all the way to the national title as the Tigers ranked first in the country in scoring (11.0 points per game) and total defense (252.0 yards per game). The Tigers also ranked among the national leaders in rushing defense (67.0 yards per game), pass defense efficiency (89.8 rating) and pass defense (185.0 yards per game). Joining Spears as starters for the Tigers include what some have considered the best cornerback tandem in the country in Corey Webster and Travis Daniels along with defensive tackle Kyle Williams, linebackers Lionel Turner and Cameron Vaughn and safety LaRon Landry. DEFENSIVE LINE Gone from last year's team is all-everything defensive tackle Chad Lavalais along with defensive end Marquise Hill, both of which were selected in the NFL Draft last April. Back in the trenches for the Tigers however will be firstteam All-SEC pick and a preseason All-America Marcus Spears along with Kyle Williams, an honorable all-conference selection. Junior Melvin Oliver and sophomore Kirston Pittman both played valuable minutes last year and could be counted on to step in to fill the void left by the departure of Lavalais and Hill. In addition, junior college transfer Claude Wroten joined the Tigers for bowl practice and emerged from spring practice as a player who will be counted on for a starting spot when the season opens. LINEBACKER The return of starters Lionel Turner and Cameron Vaughn makes the linebacker position one of the strengths of the Tiger defense heading into Turner, a senior, finished second on the team with 78 tackles a year ago and he capped his junior campaign with nine tackles and two sacks against Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.Vaughn had 55 tackles in 14 games for the Tigers in Kenneth Hollis, a junior college transfer, redshirted last year for the Tigers and should make an impact this year as will redshirt freshmen Darius Ingram and Dominic Cooper along with true freshman Ali Highsmith. DEFENSIVE BACKS With the return of three of four defensive backs, including first-team All- America Corey Webster and Freshman All-America LaRon Landry, the Tigers should once again be difficult to throw against in Webster, who ranks second in school history with 14 career interceptions, will start for the third straight year at cornerback with second-year starter Travis Daniels holding down the other cornerback spot. Landry will be in charge of the deep part of the field after starting most of last season as a free safety. Other players expected to step in and contribute this year are senior Ronnie Prude, sophomores Jesse Daniels, Daniel Francis and newcomer Mario Stevenson, who was considered one of the top defensive backs in the juco ranks a year ago SQUAD BREAKDOWN Team Information Base Offense: Multiple Base Defense: 4-3 LETTERWINNERS RETURNING: Offense:...23 Defense:...15 Specialty:...3 TOTAL:...41 LETTERWINNERS LOST: Offense:...13 Defense:...11 Specialty:...2 TOTAL:...26 Marcus Spears Season Preview STARTERS RETURNING: Offense:...6 Defense:...7 Specialty:...2 TOTAL:...15 STARTERS LOST: Offense:...6 Defense:...4 Specialty:...1 TOTAL:...11 STARTERS RETURNING Offense RB Justin Vincent (5-10, 208, So.) Last year, the Tigers ranked first in the SEC in net punting, kickoff coverage, while also featuring the nation's top punt returner in Skyler Green. Sophomores Chris Jackson and Ryan Gaudet return to handle the kicking duties for the Tigers as the duo split the responsibilities last year with Jackson handling the kickoffs and Gaudet doing most of the placekicking. The departure of Donnie Jones leaves the punter position up for grabs with Jackson, along with redshirt freshman Patrick Fisher, battling for that spot. Green, who led the nation in punt return average in 2003 with an 18.5 average, returns as LSU's return specialist, while Gant Petty will continue to serve as the snapper on both punts and placekicks.
