The two teams met in the 2011 season opener, and EJ Manuel threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns to lead the No. 6 Seminoles to a 34-0 victory over the Warhawks. The Warhawks have compiled a 4-4 record (.500) against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (0-1 vs. Clemson, 0-1 vs. Florida State, 2-2 vs. Louisville and 2-0 vs. Wake Forest). ULM s last win over an ACC opponent came against Wake Forest, 17-10, in the 2014 season and home opener. ULM assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Mike Collins and Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher worked together for two years on Nick Saban s staff at LSU. Collins spent the 2003 season as a staff assistant before being promoted to linebackers coach in 2004 while Fisher served as LSU s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. As expected, sophomore Caleb Evans and junior Garrett Smith shared snaps at quarerback in the 2017 season opener at Memphis. Smith completed 10-of-17 throws for 171 yards with one score and one interception, while Evans connected on 11-of-20 passes for 108 yards and one TD. Smith accounted for 219 yards total offense, including 12 rushes for a team-best 48 yards. The duo completed throws to nine different receivers. The Warhawks produced 17 first downs and 246 total yards in the second half at Memphis. ULM outgained the Tigers in total yards, , while converting 7-of-10 on third downs and going a perfect 2-for-2 on fourth downs. The Warhawks possessed the ball for 21:02 in the second half. The ULM defense responded well in sudden-change situations in the season opener at Memphis, going a perfect 4-for-4, as the Tigers failed to score any points off four Warhawk miscues (three lost fumbles and an interception). The Warhawk defense also played a key role in the second-half comeback, limiting the Tigers to just six first downs and 72 rushing yards. With only eight seniors on its preseason roster, there s no question Louisiana Monroe features one of the youngest teams in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision. Saturday s probable starting lineup lists just four seniors, two on each side of the football (offense: left guard Frank Sutton Jr. and wide receiver Brian Williams; defense: defensive end Caleb Tucker and field corner Juwan Offray). The Warhawks signed four 3-star prospects, including cornerbacks JJ Dallas and Corey Straughter, running back Jakyle Holmes and offensive lineman Joquarius Savage. Dallas, a transfer from Southwestern College, won the starting assignment at boundary corner during preseason camp, and Straughter enters the season opener listed No. 2 on the depth chart at field corner. Louisiana Monroe s 2017 opponents had a combined record of (.568) last season, and nine of those 12 opponents played in postseason bowl games. This season, ULM s unforgettable Team of Destiny celebrates the 30th anniversary of its 1987 National Championship. Head coach Pat Collins led the former Northeast Louisiana University football team to a 13-2 record overall and capped that memorable season with a win over Marshall in the I-AA title game. The team won its last three playoff games by a combined total of five points. Quarterback Stan Humphries threw for 4,019 yards and 33 touchdowns during the 15-game schedule. The defense was the best in the Southland Conference during the regular season, allowing yards and 19.9 points per game. ULM will honor the 1987 National Championship team the last weekend in September and the current team will wear a tribute uniform.
