Levine began 2011 in his second season as assistant head coach, to which he was elevated to in the spring of Levine, who holds two master s degrees, has brought a wide array of experience to Houston, having coached at the high school, college and NFL levels during his 16-year coaching career. At Houston, he currently serves as special teams coordinator and inside receivers/tight ends coach. During Levine s tenure at UH, the special teams units have reached unprecedented heights, highlighted by 16 blocked kicks, eight kickoff returns for touchdowns and six forced turnovers. Those groups also have tied/broken seven NCAA records and set 11 school marks. Additionally, the eight kickoff returns for touchdowns are the most by any FBS school over the past four years, while the 16 blocked kicks rank as the fourth-most in the nation during that same period. Houston has been explosive as a return unit during Levine s tenure and has three returns for scores in 2011, including Tyron Carrier s seventh career kickoff return for a score (tied an NCAA record) and two punt return scores by two different returners in the road win at Tulane. Junior place kicker Matt Hogan also broke the NCAA record with 78 consecutive extra points made in a season. The 2010 season saw the Cougars return a punt, kickoff and a blocked field goal for touchdowns. Punt returner Patrick Edwards finished seventh in the nation and first in C-USA with a 15.4 yard per return average, while Houston finished ninth nationally with a 14.3 yard per return mark. Senior Wesley Scourten finished the 2010 season with five blocked kicks and eight for his career both school records while Carrier brought his career kickoff return touchdown total to six before adding No. 7 in Offensively in 2010, the Cougars finished 11th in the nation in total offense (480.5 ypg), fifth in passing offense (327.3 ypg) and 13th in scoring offense (37.7 ppg). In 2009, inside receivers Cleveland (1,214 yards) and Carrier (1,029 yards) each surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving mark, while tight end Fendi Onobun became a sixth-round draft pick of the NFL s St. Louis Rams. Onobun also tied an NCAA single-game record with two blocked PATs against C-USA foe Southern Miss, one of which led to a key defensive conversion in a win. Offensively, the Cougars ranked first nationally in total offense (563.4 ypg), passing offense (433.7 ypg) and scoring offense (42.2 ppg). Levine tutored kicker Matt Hogan, who was named a Freshman All-American by Sporting News and was a C-USA All-Freshman Special Teams selection. The Cougars also tied an NCAA record by returning five kickoffs for touchdowns and tied a school single-season mark with six blocked kicks. In 2008, Levine coached tight end Mark Hafner to an All-Conference USA Second Team selection and career highs in catches (86), receiving yards (907) and touchdowns (11). Carrier was also named to the All-C-USA Second Team after catching 80 passes for 1,026 yards and nine touchdowns. Statistically, the Cougar offense finished second in the country in both total offense (562.8 ypg) and passing (401.6 ypg) and 10th in scoring (40.6 ppg). Also under Levine, junior punter Chase Turner earned a spot on the All-C-USA Honorable Mention list after averaging 45.5 yards per punt. Turner s mark was a single-season school record, while the team s net punting average of 36.5 yards was also the highest in school history. The Cougars finished the season ranked 34th in the country in net punting, up from 114th (31.2) in 2007, prior to Levine s arrival. Houston s kickoff coverage defense ranked 22nd nationally, yielding a mere yards per return on 92 kickoffs, while the Cougars blocked five kicks (three field goals, two punts). Before coming to Houston, Levine spent two seasons with the NFL s Carolina Panthers, serving as the assistant special teams and assistant strength and conditioning coach. While at Carolina, Levine coached one of the best specialist units in the NFL in kicker John Kasay, punter Jason Baker and long snapper Jason Kyle. In 2006, the Panthers led the NFC with a net punting average of 38.8 yards while Baker s 39.0 net punting average set a Panthers team record. Baker s 31 punts inside the 20 were also tops in the NFC, and he ranked second overall with a 45.7-yard gross average. Kasay produced his most accurate season as well in 2006, converting a career-best 88.9 percent of his field goals (24-of-27). Prior to Carolina, Levine coached at the University of Louisville, where he played an integral role in the Cardinals success for three seasons. During his stay in Louisville, the Cardinals posted an impressive 29-8 overall record, including an 11-1 record and a No. 6 national ranking in Levine began as director of football operations at Louisville in 2003, where he was responsible for the overall day-to-day operation of the school s football program in coach Bobby Petrino s first year as head 2012 TICKETCITY BOWL coach. In 2004 he was named special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach and made an immediate impact on the field. Under Levine s tutelage, the Cardinals ranked near the top in Conference USA in almost all special teams statistics, while Louisville s defense finished 15th nationally in total defense, 18th in rush defense, 24th in scoring defense and 30th in pass defense. Superlatives from his two seasons as special teams coach at Louisville included seven blocked kicks, three punt returns for touchdowns and an NCAA single-season record of 77 consecutive extra points by kicker Art Carmody. Carmody, a former walk-on, was also named First-Team All-Big East under Levine and went on to win the 2006 Lou Groza Award as the nation s top collegiate kicker. Carmody finished his playing career as the NCAA s all-time leading scorer for a kicker with 433 points. As special teams coordinator at Louisiana Tech in 2002, Levine coached Josh Scobee, who earned All-WAC Second Team honors and was selected by Jacksonville in the 2004 NFL draft. Offensively, Louisiana Tech ranked 19th nationally in total offense (417.9 ypg) and 10th in passing (302.8 ypg). Levine spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons working as the offensive graduate assistant at Auburn, where he coached the tight ends and worked closely with special teams. During those two seasons, the Tigers compiled a 16-9 overall record while winning back-to-back SEC West Division titles. Robert Johnson, Lorenzo Diamond and Cooper Wallace, three of the tight ends Levine worked with, went on to earn roster spots in the NFL. Prior to Auburn, Levine worked as an assistant coach at Texas State, assisting with the wide receivers in 1997 before coaching the tight ends in 1998 and In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Levine served as co-recruiting coordinator at the end of the 1999 season. 20 HOUSTON FOOTBALL SCHOOL-RECORD 12 VICTORIES IN 2011 COACHING STAFF quarterbacks. KLIFF KINGSBURY Co-Offensive Coordinator Quarterbacks Texas Tech 01 Fourth Season at Houston Kliff Kingsbury continues his second season as a full-time assistant coach and his fourth with the Houston Cougar program. Kingsbury serves as the co-offensive coordinator and coaches the Houston One of the country s top up-and-coming offensive minds, Kingsbury has enjoyed a variety of succes during his four-year tenure at UH, coaching Case Keenum to NCAA records for passing yardage, touchdown passes, total offense, completions and 300-yard games this year, while calling the plays for the country s top-ranked offense. In fact this 2011 Cougar offense is No. 2 all-time for offense and point production in NCAA history. Kingsbury s quarterbacks in 2011 have accounted for 5,769 passing yards this season and while5,099 of those yards have come from Keenum, he has also helped senior Cotton Turner throw for 652 yards, six touchdowns, just one INT and complete 65 percent of his throws. He also continued the development of sophomore David Piland, who redshirted in 2011 after starting as a true freshman last season and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining in In his first season as quarterbacks coach, Kingsbury prepped Piland to an average of yards passing per game, which ranked No. 3 nationally. He was named to the Sporting News Freshman All-American team. Kingsbury entered the coaching ranks at Houston in the spring of 2008 and served two seasons as the offensive quality control assistant prior to his promotion. A four-year letterman at Texas Tech, Kingsbury received multiple honors including Associated Press Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year as a quarterback for the Red Raiders. In addition, he set 39 school records, 16 Big 12 marks and 17 NCAA records during his career. Entering the 2011 season, Kingsbury continues to hold eight NCAA career records, including most plays in a season (814 in 2002), most plays in a two-year and a three-year span, most career plays per game (50.1 ppg), most passes completed during a four-game stretch (176 in 2002) and highest completion percentage (83.1, vs. Texas A&M, 49-of-59, 2002). At Texas Tech, Kingsbury recorded more than 12,000 passing yards and total offense including over 1,000 pass completions making him only the third player in NCAA history to accomplish all three. Kingsbury also excelled in the classroom as he was one of 14 collegiate football players to receive a post-graduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame as he also garnered Verizon Academic Player of the Year honors in As a senior he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy, annually presented to the nation s best college quarterback. He was also selected Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-American as a senior. Prior to joining the Cougar staff, Kingsbury spent the 2007 season in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after spending four years in the NFL. A 2003 sixth-round NFL draft pick of the New England Patriots, Kingsbury also played for New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos and New York Jets. Kingsbury graduated from Texas Tech in 2001 with a bachelor s degree in management. Houston has been the country s most explosive offense in 2011, leading the nation in total offense, scoring offense and passing offense. A huge reason for that production has been the play of Houston s wide receivers, which is the country s most productive group. Houston has a number of record setters on this year s team, including Patrick Edwards, who leads the country with 18 touchdown catches. He also ranks No. 3 nationally with 1,524 yards and is the school and Conference USA all-time leader with 4,279 career receiving yards. Tyron Carrier ranks among national leaders in receptions per game and is both the Houston and C-USA all-time leader with 311 career catches. Couple their play with the breakout season of senior Justin Johnson (75 catches, 1,018 yards and 11 TDs) and UH boasts one of the most diverse receiving collections in the country. Phillips is a star on the rise in the coaching world, having been selected to participate in the 2008 NCAA Coaches Academy Program and the 2010 NCAA Champions Forum, both of which were designed to identify and nurture minority future head coaching candidates. During his tenure at UH, Phillips has worked with stellar wide receivers such as Brandon Middleton, Vincent Marshall, Jeron Harvey, Biren Ealy, and Donnie Avery, the first wide receiver taken in the 2008 NFL Draft. In the past four seasons at UH, Phillips has produced six 1,000-yard receiving seasons from three different players. Last year, Patrick Edwards posted his second straight 1,000-yard season and was named first-team All-Conference USA for his efforts, feats he duplicated in In 2009, Phillips tutored the trio of James Cleveland, Edwards and Carrier to All-Conference USA accolades. Cleveland was named the Newcomer of the Year, Edwards was selected to the C-USA Second Team, while Carrier was an Honorable Mention. All three posted 1,000-yard receiving seasons, becoming only the fourth trio in NCAA history to accomplish that feat. In 2008, Phillips guided Carrier to an All-C-USA Second Team selection and a spot on the C-USA All-Freshman Team. All starred under the tutelage of Phillips, himself a consensus All-America wide receiver during 40 University of Houston Football

21 most improved team in college football COACHING STAFF his playing days at the University of Houston. Phillips has clearly shown that he has the ability to communicate his ideas and pass on the benefit of his experiences to young players. In 2003, Middleton was a first-team All-C-USA pick and All-America Honorable Mention after setting a conference record with his 1,250 receiving yards. Middleton, one of the greatest deep threats in school history, amassed that yardage total on only 55 catches and averaged 23.4 yards per reception for his career (103 catches, 2,410 yards). Marshall finished his career as the Cougars all-time leader in receptions (272) and yards (3,770). Avery, a First-Team All-C-USA pick in 2007, holds UH single-game records for receiving yards (346) and all-purpose yards (427). Phillips has also proven that he can make a quick impact, mentoring two C-USA All-Freshman receivers in Avery and Leonard Gibson. A native Houstonian who played at Ross Sterling High School, Phillips first made his mark at the University of Houston by hauling in passes from Heisman Trophy quarterback Andre Ware during the Cougars high-flying, high-scoring Run `N Shoot heyday. Phillips led the nation in receiving yards in 1987 (875 yards) and 1988 (1,444), the first player since Tulsa s Howard Twilley accomplished that feat 23 years earlier. In 1987 Phillips not only was an All-Southwest Conference pick and the SWC Newcomer of the Year, but was also selected to the UPI All-America team. The following year Phillips was named to the All-SWC First Team, was the SWC Co-Offensive Player of the Year and a Consensus First-Team All-America pick. He was also selected to the SWC s All-Decade Team for the 80s and in 2006 Phillips spectacular contributions to the program were recognized when he was inducted into the Houston Hall of Honor. With his offensive numbers, he continues to rank among the NCAA all-time leaders. Entering the 2011 season, Phillips ranked fourth with 9.4 receptions per game during his career. He joined with James Dixon in 1988 as the first teammates to record 1,000-yard receiving seasons in the same year. That electrifying combo remains the only unit to rank 1-2 in catches per game in the NCAA in the same season. Phillips was drafted by Detroit in 1989, where he set a rookie record with a 10-catch, 155-yard performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Phillips enjoyed an eight-year professional career, playing six seasons in the NFL and two in the CFL before moving into the coaching ranks. In 2001 he coached as an offensive intern for the Minnesota Vikings, working under head coach Dennis Green and offensive coordinator Sherman Lewis. In that capacity Phillips worked closely with wide receivers Randy Moss, Chris Carter, Jake Reed and Chris Walsh. The following season Phillips served in a similar capacity with the Atlanta Falcons, where he worked under head coach Dan Reeves. Phillips began his college coaching career in 2001, when he served as an offensive assistant at Houston under head coach Dana Dimel. As the leader of the Cougars 3-4 defense, Stewart also works closely with the cornerbacks, one of C-USA s most improved units, led by C-USA Newcomer of the Year D.J. Hayden and sophomore starter Zach McMillian. Familiarity with a new scheme and fit-based recruiting allowed Houston to see one of the country s top jumps in scoring defense this year. UH annually ranked from No in the three seasons before 2011, allowing more than 30 points a game. In just Stewart s second season, however, UH is allowing just 23.1 points a contest and ranking among the national leaders in turnover margin. Tackles for loss have also been a huge key for Houston. The defense also created 28 turnovers and totalled 29.0 sacks and tackles for loss. Stewart came to Houston after spending the 2009 season as a defensive special assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he coached the NFL s top cornerback interception tandem of Asante Samuel (9) and Sheldon Brown (5). 30 HOUSTON FOOTBALL SCHOOL-RECORD 12 VICTORIES IN 2011 COACHING STAFF MACK RHOADES Director of Athletics Arizona 93 Third Season at Houston Mack Rhoades became the 11th director of athletics in University of Houston history with his hiring in June 2009 after an award-winning career at the University of Akron. In a short time, Rhoades has electrified the Athletics Department and the city of Houston with his bold plans and vision of Cougar Athletics for the future, including the program s move to the BIG EAST Conference for the academic year. In two seasons at the helm, he led the Athletics Department to unprecedented heights. Under his watch, the football program ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation during the 2009 season, the men s track and field teams has swept the indoor and outdoor titles in both 09 and 10 and the men s basketball team won the 2010 Conference USA Tournament crown. Houston became the first Conference USA school to win championships in football, men s basketball, women s basketball and baseball. In 2011, the Cougar softball team came within one win of the College World Series. Those accolades also extended into the classroom. Houston s student-athletes have posted the best cumulative GPAs in school history in each of the past years. During Rhoades tenure, UH has averaged 130 student-athletes on the C-USA Commissioner s Honor Roll with a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.0 or higher. Rhoades continued to push his bold plans for faciities development. The Athletics Department unveiled plans for a new football stadium on the current Robertson Stadium site and an extensive renovation of Hofheinz Pavilion. At $160 million, those plans are the most ambitious in the Department s history. Rhoades also has been a leader in the development of the Cougar Pride Leadership Academy, which just completed its first full-year of implementation. As one of just a handful across the nation, the program brings student-athletes together as freshmen through to graduation with activities that promote the complete person. The athletic department also saw the largest increase in football season ticket numbers in the nation with an 82 percent bump from just 6,300 to 11,400 in just one year. AT AKRON This kind of leadership is nothing new for Rhoades during his professional career. Sweeping changes, a $61.6 million on-campus football stadium, the creation of a women s golf program and unprecedented success within an athletics department recognized three times for its diversity strategy were only a small part of Rhoades signature on the Akron program. During his tenure, the numbers alone spoke for themselves: 765 total Dean s List honors, 213 All-Conference honors, 83 student-athletes named Academic All-Conference, 20 team championships won, 14 Conference Players of the Year and 12 All-Americans to name a few. All the on-field success was matched off the field as well. In 2006, Akron s federal graduation rate was 60 percent, exceeding the general student body by 25 percent. In 2008, UA s studentathlete federal graduation rate stood at 75 percent. Also, Akron s overall student-athlete GPA increased from to Not to be lost in the excellence on the field and in the classroom is the fact that UA studentathletes completed more than 1,600 hours of community service during his last three years. Most impressively, Rhoades led Akron to success while balancing the budget each of his last three years. In , he implemented a zero-based budget, where coaches and unit heads pre-planned spending in order to present a need-based budget proposal to the University Board of Trustees. With a proven track record of budget management and proactive steps, Rhoades gained support from University officials, allowing the department s budget to grow from $13.5 million to $19.2 million during his tenure. His drive for perfection and expectation of excellence quickly put his name on the map nationally. Rhoades served as a member of the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet also serving on the Administrative Committee of that cabinet as well as leading the communications committee for the MAC. On the business end of the spectrum, Rhoades played a key role and was chairperson on the steering committee in the Zips new on-campus football and multi-use facility InfoCision Stadium/Summa Field which opened in September He also oversaw vast improvements to all facilities. James A. Rhodes Arena enjoyed new office space for all programs and units, expansion and renovation of academic services, a volleyball office suite, an academic advising suite, a media work room and locker room upgrades for all basketball programs. Lee Jackson Field Complex saw the creation of a new softball facility allowing the program to play on campus, resurfacing the baseball field and enhancing the dugouts, renovation to the soccer field and renovation of the track & field complex, refurbishing the track surface, adding 1,500 permanent seats and ornamental fencing. The field house also welcomed a new program under Rhoades watch with the creation of the women s golf program, which shared the state-of-the-art indoor practice facility with the UA men. Financial success was not limited to just dollars from the University. UA football went from reporting an average of approximately 5,000 fans per game to going beyond the NCAA-required 15,000 in each of his three years. With the addition of InfoCision Stadium, revenue and season ticket sales for 2009 already were at an all-time high. Also, men s basketball season ticket sales increased each year, while the success of the men s soccer team brought on the demand for season-ticket packages for the first time in Rhoades increased staffing levels across the department, adding 10 full-time assistant coaches and creating more than 30 full-time and graduate assistants positions within the department. AT UTEP Rhoades came to Akron after a seven-year stint at UTEP, where he most recently served as the executive senior associate athletics director. He worked his way up the ranks with the Miners after joining the staff as assistant AD for development. In his final role with UTEP, Rhoades oversaw all fundraising, the marketing and media relations offices as well as football external operations, men s basketball, men s golf, licensing, Miner Athletic Club and the athletics ticket office. While at UTEP, Rhoades administered the Athletic Major Gift Program, through which $9.1 million was raised. He also was instrumental in increasing marketing revenue from $800,000 to $1.33 million in just four years. In addition, he guided UTEP to being among the conference leaders in attendance for football and men s basketball. Rhoades was heavily involved in athletics facility upgrades at UTEP, including the construction of the $11 million Larry K. Durham Sports Center which houses state-of-the-art football coaches offices and locker rooms, as well as a training room and strength and conditioning center for all sports. EARLY CAREER Prior to his stint at UTEP, he worked at Marquette, where he was the athletics advancement officer. In that role, Rhoades oversaw all external operations for the Office of Athletic Advancement and the Blue & Gold Athletic Scholarship Fund. Rhoades worked for one year as an athletics marketing assistant for Yale, where he developed marketing plans for football, men s basketball, men s ice hockey and the NCAA Fencing Championships. Additionally, he obtained sponsorship agreements for Yale Athletics. PERSONAL A graduate of the University of Arizona with a bachelor s degree in physical education, Rhoades later attended Indiana University where he earned his master s degree in sports management and marketing. He and his wife, Amy, have three daughters Nicolette, Natalie and Noelle. 50 University of Houston Football
