The all-time series is tied 1-1, with ULM winning the first meeting in 1979, 21-20, and the Tigers posting a shutout in 2000, In its 66-year football history, Louisiana Monroe is (.439) in season openers, including a 3-2 record (.600) in its last five games. Second-year Louisiana Monroe head coach Matt Viator has compiled a 7-3 record (.700) in 10 seasonopening games. Viator is 1-0 in season-opening games at ULM, posting a win over Southern in his Warhawk debut in. Louisiana Monroe s 2017 roster features two players from Greater Memphis, including sophomore linebacker Cortez Sisco Jr. (Southhaven, Miss./DeSoto Central) and junior wide receiver D Marius Gillespie (Olive Branch, Miss./Center Hill). Sisco and Gillespie will join junior wide receiver Marcus Green (Pontotoc, Miss./North Pontotoc) and junior defensive lineman Derion Ford (Starkville, Miss.) as Thursday s game captains at Memphis. With only eight seniors on its preseason roster, there s no question Louisiana Monroe features one of the youngest teams in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision. Thursday s projected starting lineup lists just four seniors, two on each side of the football (offense: left guard Frank Sutton Jr. and tailback Derrick Gore; defense: defensive end Caleb Tucker and field corner Juwan Offray). Louisiana Monroe s 2017 recruiting class was ranked No. 1 in the Sun Belt, according to Rivals.com. The Warhawks signed four 3-star prospects, including cornerbacks JJ Dallas and Corey Straughter, running back Jakyle Holmes and offensive lineman Joquarius Savage. Dallas, a transfer from Southwestern College, won the starting assignment at boundary corner during preseason camp, and Straughter enters the season opener listed No. 2 on the depth chart at field corner. All-Sun Belt selections (linebacker) David Griffith and (defensive end) Caleb Tucker, who combined for 128 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss including seven sacks, anchor the Warhawk defense in The 6-foot- 1, 209-pound Griffith led ULM in tackles (78), tackles for loss (12 for 55 yards) and sacks (4 for 34 yards). Griffith recorded double-figure tackles in three games: 10 vs. South Alabama, 11 at Georgia Southern and a career-best 14 stops in the season opener vs. Southern. The 6-2, 230-pound Tucker recorded 50 tackles in and ranked second on the team in sacks (3 for 15 yards) and third in tackles for loss (6.5 for 28 yards). He posted a career-best nine tackles at Appalachian State. Following ULM s second preseason scrimmage, head coach Matt Viator made it clear that both junior Garrett Smith and sophomore Caleb Evans will be seeing playing time at quarterback early in the season. In, Smith and Evans combined to complete 179-of-323 passes (.554) for 2,071 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. This season, ULM s unforgettable Team of Destiny celebrates the 30th anniversary of its 1987 National Championship. Head coach Pat Collins led the former Northeast Louisiana University football team to a 13-2 record overall and capped that memorable season with a win over Marshall in the I-AA title game. The team won its last three playoff games by a combined total of five points. Quarterback Stan Humphries threw for 4,019 yards and 33 touchdowns during the 15-game schedule. The defense was the best in the Southland Conference during the regular season, allowing yards and 19.9 points per game. ULM will honor the 1987 National Championship team the last weekend in September and the current team will wear a tribute uniform. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound Smith started the first six games of the season before suffering a seasonending lower-body injury in the first half against Texas State. He connected on 103-of-179 throws (.575) for 1,237 yards, nine TDs and seven interceptions. Smith recorded four 200-yard passing games in his first five starts, including a career-best 302 yards against Idaho. He accounted for 358 total yards (208 passing and 150 rushing) and three scores in the season opener against Southern. The 6-2, 210-pound Evans appeared in seven games a year ago and started the last four games. He hit 76- of-144 passes (.528) for 834 yards, four TDs and six interceptions. Evans set career highs for completions (26), attempts (38), passing yards (279) and TD passes (3) against South Alabama.
