That number eclipsed the previous mark of 1,868 fans who made it out to the LSU Soccer Complex on Aug. 31 to see the Tigers dominate the Southern Miss Golden Eagles by the score of 3-0 in the season opener. LSU is on pace for a record-setting season in attendance as it is averaging 1,641 fans in three home matches this season. The Tigers finished No. 24 in the country in average attendance a year ago as an average of 817 fans packed the stands in 10 home matches in Tigers Benefit from Quick Strike Offense The Tigers have certainly shown the ability to score goals this season as they currently lead the Southeastern Conference with 21 through five games. But they have also shown the ability to build momentum by scoring quickly as they have scored two goals less than one minute apart four times so far this season. Against Memphis on Sept. 6, Rachel Yepez (16:09) and Malorie Rutledge (16:53) scored just 44 seconds apart in the first half. Later in the first half against Memphis, Roslyn Jones (30:21) and Yepez (30:35) actually tied a team record of the fastest two goals scored by scoring just 14 seconds apart. The Tigers struck quick again against McNeese State on Friday night as Yepez (22:23, 23:04) scored a pair of goals just 41 seconds apart in the first half, while Veronica Godbolt (74:02) and Jones (74:27) added goals 25 seconds apart in the second half. Rutledge, Boudreau Among SEC Assist Leaders Not only do the Tigers lead the Southeastern Conference in goals scored on the season with 21, but they also lead the league in assists as they have been credited with 20 through five games. Leading the way for the Tigers is sophomore midfielder Malorie Rutledge, who is tops in the SEC with a whopping seven assists on the young season. Rutledge, who is LSU s leading scorer with 13 points thus far, has already tied the team high from a year ago when fellow sophomore Michelle Makasini was credited with seven assists as a freshman. Rutledge tied an LSU single-game record by recording three assists in a 7-2 win over Memphis on Sept. 6. But Rutledge is not alone as freshman standout Taryne Boudreau has displayed an uncanny ability to distribute the ball as she follows closely behind with six assists on the year. Boudreau also tied the LSU single-game record as she was credited with three assists against McNeese State on Friday night. Tigers Earn Highest Ranking in Program History The LSU soccer team followed a pair of dominating wins over regionally-ranked opponents this weekend by earning its highest ranking in the program s 13-year history in this week s regional polls released Tuesday. The Tigers have earned a No. 7 ranking in the Central Region according to the latest poll released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, while they move up two spots to No. 8 in the latest Soccer Buzz Central Region Top 15. LSU (4-0-0) is off to its best start since 2004 and is riding a current six-game unbeaten streak after a pair of convincing wins over Memphis (7-2) on Sept. 6 and Miami (4-1) on Sept. 8. The Tigers are also receiving votes in two of the national polls as they are currently ranked No. 35 in the country with four points in this week s Soccer Times Top 25 and No. 36 nationally with two points in the latest NSCAA Top 25. Yepez Receives National Honors Following MVP Performance After being named the Most Valuable Player at the 2007 Long s Electronics Samford Bulldog Classic in Birmingham, Ala., this past weekend, LSU forward Rachel Yepez has been named to two National Teams of the Week released Tuesday. Yepez has been named to both the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week and the Top Drawer Soccer Women s College Team of the Week for her outstanding performance. She scored an SEC leading four goals on the weekend against a pair of regionally-ranked foes, recording her first career hat trick in LSU s 7-2 win over Memphis on Sept. 6 while scoring the first goal of the match in its 4-1 win over Miami on Saturday. She was also voted the LSU Female Athlete of the Week by a panel of local media.

5 Four Tigers Named to Samford Classic All-Tournament Team LSU benefitted from an offensive explosion as it blew out the Memphis Tigers and Miami Hurricanes by a combined score of 11-3 at the 2007 Long s Electronics Samford Classic in Birmingham, Ala., this past weekend. For their effort, four Tigers were named to the Samford Classic All-Tournament Team led by sophomore forward Rachel Yepez, who scored a team-high four goals en route to being named the Most Valuable Player. Joining Yepez on the All-Tournament Team was sophomore midfielder Malorie Rutledge, junior forward Roslyn Jones and freshman midfielder Taryne Boudreau. Rutledge combined for one goal and four assists in two games while tying an LSU single-game record with three assists against Memphis. Jones scored two goals and added two assists, while Boudreau scored her first career goal and was credited with three assists on the weekend. The Tigers are tops in the Southeastern Conference and rank fourth nationally after four games with 16 goals on the young season. LSU Shatters Attendance Record in Season Opener The Tigers kicked off the 2007 season on Aug. 31 with a bang as it dominated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles by the score of 3-0 in front of a new record crowd of 1,828 at the LSU Soccer Complex. The Tigers shattered the previous all-time attendance record by 139 as 1,689 fans witnessed a classic SEC Western Division showdown with Ole Miss on Sept. 30, LSU has attracted a number of large crowds in the Brian Lee era, establishing seven of the top 10 attendances in the 12-year history of the LSU Soccer Complex. The squad expects to play in front similar crowds throughout the season as it hopes to crack the 1,000 mark in average attendance with seven home games remaining in LSU Enjoys Record-Setting Weekend for Attendance LSU opened its season in front of the largest weekend crowd in the history of the LSU Soccer Complex as a total of 2,763 fans packed the stadium to see a pair of dominating performances by the Tigers on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2. The Tigers shut out Southern Miss on Aug. 31 by the score of 3-0 in front of a new record crowd of 1,828 and followed with a 2-0 blanking of Louisiana Tech on Sept. 2 in front of the fifth-largest crowd in stadium history at 935. The Tigers continue their home schedule against in-state rival McNeese State on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear white to the game in an effort to White Out the Cowgirls, and the first 250 fans wearning white will receive a free LSU visor. It is also the first of two Student Point Games of Clarke Leads Offensive Attack on Opening Weekend Sophomore all-conference midfielder Melissa Clarke has shown no ill effects of a season-ending knee injury suffered a year ago as she scored a pair of goals in the season opening weekend en route to being named the LSU Classic Offensive MVP. She scored her first goal of the season in LSU s 3-0 shutout of Southern Miss on Aug. 31 and followed with the game-winner in the Tigers 2-0 defeat of Louisiana Tech on Sept. 2. The Norcross, Ga., native received a medical redshirt after missing the final 14 games of last season with a torn lateral collateral ligament in her right knee. Clarke, who was named a Second-Team All-SEC selection and member of the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2005, went down in the second half against Villanova on Sept. 10 Vogler Keeping Opponents Off the Scoreboard Senior goalkeeper Valerie Vogler continues to climb LSU s all-time list for shutouts after keeping both the Southern Miss Golden Eagles and Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters off the scoreboard to open the season. Vogler only needed to save two shots on the weekend as she now sits in sole possession of third place on the school s all-time list with nine shutouts in her LSU career. She trails only former Tigers Bonnie Otillio (15) and Robyn DesOrmeaux (13.5), while teammate Jackie Moseley is ranked fifth all-time with six shutouts to her credit. Vogler has been in goal in each of the last six matches in the Tigers current six-game unbeaten streak dating back to last season. LSU ended the 2007 season at home by battling 12th-ranked and SEC champion Florida to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 22 and shutting out division rival Arkansas in the season finale by the score of 1-0 on Oct. 27.
