6 Meet The Lady Vols Judi Pavon- Head Coach As the coach with the most team championships in Tennessee Lady Vol golf history, Judi Pavon brings a great deal of energy and enthusiasm into her fifth full season at the helm of the UT women s golf program. This marks Pavon s eighth year as a member of the Women s Athletics Department after serving as the team s assistant coach from Her extensive golf background also includes a professional career spanning from with two years on the LPGA Tour, where she was the Tour s second-ever left-handed player. In Pavon guided the Lady Vols back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2000 campaign. At the NCAA East Regional UT shot a team total of 918 to finish in seventh-place and advance to the national tournament. The appearance was the 12th straight-appearance in regional action for the Lady Vols. At the championships, the squad finished in 11th place with a four-day school-record total of 1193, topping the previous best of 1197 set in She also eclipsed the 400- win mark for head-to-head victories and ended the season with her total standing at 468, trailing only Lori Brock s mark of 533. Other highlights on the year included a second-place finish at the Las Vegas Founders Women s Collegiate Showdown, a final national ranking of 17th and fourth-place finish at the SEC Championships, only one shot behind Auburn and LSU for second place. Individuals continue to thrive under Pavon s tutelage, as captain Jessica Shepley earned honorable mention National Golf Coaches Association All-America laurels. Shepley paced UT at the NCAA Championships with the program s best mark in championship history, a 286 effort ( ) en route to a fifth-place finish. Shepley also had two other top ten finishes on the year. She tied for fifth-place at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational with a 220 and finished in a fourth-place tie with a 218 at the SEC Championships. Violeta Retamoza proved her freshman campaign was no fluke, as she finished in a tie for first place at the SEC Championships. In addition, Retamoza finished tied for eighth at the Las Vegas Shootout with a total of 220 and took a sixth-place tie at the Sun Trust Lady Gator Invitational with a 223. For her efforts all season, Retamoza was named to the first team All-SEC squad. Teesha Ash did very well in the Vegas Shootout as well, leading the Lady Vols with a sixth-place finish 219. The East Tennessee native also became the third golfer in UT history to notch a hole-in-one. Ash accomplished that feat by knocking in her drive on the 145-yard No. 17 hole at the NCAA Championships. The team also had a very strong year academically. The squad posted a 3.3 grade point average for the year. Ash, Golda Johansson, Retamoza and Shepley all were named to the SEC Academic honor role. On a national level, Ash and Retamoza earned NGCA Academic All-America laurels During the third season under Pavon s tenure, UT completed the school year ranked 12th in the nation in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll. The squad broke numerous program records, including lowest first-round score with matching 289s at the Lady Gator Invitational and Auburn Tiger Derby; lowest third-round score with a 285 at the Derby; and most titles in a campaign by tying the squad s record three crowns (Lady Kat Invitational, Derby and Lady Boilermaker). Pavon also eclipsed Lori Brock s coaching record of five career team championships with her sixth win at the Lady Boilermaker Invitational. Several Lady Vols were also successful individually during the season. Retamoza took the college scene by storm, becoming UT s initial rookie to achieve second-team All-America status and was the Big Orange s third SEC Freshman of the Year recipient. The Aguascalientes, Mexico, native took runner-up status at the conference championships with a oneover 217 to finish one shot off the lead and claim first-team All-SEC honors. Shepley joined Retamoza as a first-team member with a string of nine-straight top-15 finishes that fell just one tourney shy of former Lady Vol Abby Pearson s UT standard of 10. In her second year as head coach, Pavon maintained UT s national prominence, leading her golfers to an eighth-place Golfweek/Sagarin final ranking. The squad captured a tournament title for the second-straight season, as the Lady Vols won the Alabama Capstone Intercollegiate. The Big Orange also finished in the top five six times and placed in the top 10 in nine out of the 10 tournaments played. Additionally, UT set new squad standards at the SEC Championships when it fired its best 18-hole (282), 36-hole (577) and 54-hole (866) totals in school history, which signified the second-straight year the Lady Vols broke those records. Individually, the Lady Vols lit up the program s record books under Pavon s tutelage in UT recorded the second-, fourth- and ninth-lowest rounds in school history with the following scores: Mary Jan Fernandez s second-round 66 at the 2002 SEC Championships, Young-A Yang s first-round 68 at the 2002 Auburn Derby, Yang s first-round 69 at the 2002 SECs and Tina Schneeberger s first- and third-round 69s at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational. The squad also registered four top hole marks throughout the season. Schneeberger and Yang scored 212s at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational and SEC Championships, respectively. Fernandez and Schneeberger each fired 215s at the SEC Championships. Yang also became the initial Lady Vol to earn All-America status all four years of her career. Schneeberger captured second-team All- SEC honors, while Shepley achieved All-SEC honorable mention as a freshman. During her first year as head coach, Pavon enjoyed remarkable success. Her team achieved a final ranking of eighth in the MasterCard Coaches poll and 10th in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll. The Lady Vols finished outside the top five only three times during the season and claimed back-to-back events in the spring. The victories at the Green Wave Women s Golf Classic and the Betsy Rawls Intercollegiate were the program s first titles since Pavon s team recorded a season stroke average of 301, the best in Tennessee history by nearly five shots. Her peers acknowledged her efforts with a nomination for NGCA East Region Coach of the Year alongside Duke s Dan Brooks (NGCA Coach of the Year) and Auburn s Kim Evans (Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year). Tennessee golfers also enjoyed great individual success during the season under Pavon.
