1 Carleton College athletics for immediate release contact Dave Pape, Sports Information Director ( ) CARLETON FOOTBALL REPORT - WEEK TWO >>TODAY'S GAME It's homecoming at Bethel University and the Carleton Knights are looking to upset the party and defeat the nationally ranked Royals for the second time in three seasons (Carleton def. Bethel in 2006). Bethel slipped to No. 13 in the d3football Top 25 following a 10-7 loss at No. 17 Wheaton College last weekend. The Royals put their 14-game MIAC winning streak on the line, while Kurt Ramler's squad is looking to go 2-0 for the third straight season. This afternoon's tilt matches the top offense in the conference (Carleton, 579 yds/g) against the league's toughest defense (Bethel, yds/g). The passing game will be key for both sides as Carleton accumulated 374 yards through the air last week, and Bethel is limiting opponents to only 40.5 passing yards/game. >>THE KNIGHTS LAST WEEK: Carleton 38, Cornell 14 Senior quarterback Shane Henfling was 19-of-30 for 374 yards and five touchdowns in Carleton's season-opening, come-from-behind win at Cornell. Not to be out-done, the Carleton running game totaled 205 yards, the highest figure the Knights have recorded since Oct. 8, 2005 versus St. Olaf. Junior Phil Blue carried the ball 24 times and ran for a career-best 101 yards and a touchdown. Trailing for the first time in the contest, midway through the third quarter, Carleton reached the end zone on its next four possessions. >>THE ROYALS LAST WEEK: #17 Wheaton 10, #5 Bethel 7 A steady downpour carried through the contest, making the football incredibly tough to hang onto, as the two teams fumbled the ball a combined 11 times. The Thunder then scored what proved to be the game winning touchdown on a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown midway through the second quarter. Bethel s Logan Flannery had 142 yards on the ground for the Royals to lead all players. QB Reid Velo was 7-for-16 on the day with 84 yards, a TD, and an INT. 2 >>RAMLER AT THE HELM Kurt Ramler enters his third year as Carleton College s head football coach. He guided the Knights to a 7-13 mark in his first two seasons, the program s highest two-season victory total since the mid 1990s. Ramler is the 16th head coach in the football program s history, which stretches more than 120 years. Since taking over the program in February of 2006, he has led Carleton to strong performances against nationally ranked opponents. The Knights posted an upset victory over eventual conference champion Bethel, 17-14, on Sept. 23, 2006, Carleton s first victory over a ranked opponent in 17 seasons. That feat was almost repeated last fall when the Knights nearly defeated national No. 3 Saint John s. In addition to several seasons as a coach at the Division III level, Ramler also spent one year at NCAA Division I-AA Wagner College and coached two summers overseas in the European Federation of American Football (EFAF). >>HENFLING & THE RECORD BOOK Shane Henfling took over the starting quarterback role last year as a junior and proceeded to help re-write the Carleton record book with one of the best seasons ever by a Knights quarterback, accumulating 1,903 yards and 20 touchdown passes in His stats would have been even more impressive had he not missed nearly two games due to injury. Among the many records he broke or challenged, he owns the career completion percentage mark (171-of-299, 57.2%), equaled the single-season mark (56.3% in 2007), is second in career passing efficiency (134.6), accumulated the second-best single-season TD pass total (20 in 2007), and broke the single-game record for completions (33 in 2007). Henfling's five touchdowns last week matched his career high and are one shy of the school record. He had scoring tosses of 5, 70, 66, 69 and 9 yards. His 374 passing yards tied for the sixth-highest single-game total in program history. He now has 26 career touchdown passes, moving him up to eighth all-time. 3 >>MATT FRANK & CHRIS GARDNER: A DYNAMIC DUO Matt Frank's career totals (136 receptions, 1880 yards, 17 TDs) Chris Gardner's career totals (112 receptions, 1994 yards, 21 TDs) Carleton's tandem of senior wide receivers Matt Frank and Chris Gardner will present difficult matchups for opposing defenses all season. The pair has been writing their names all over the Carleton record book during their career. Last week versus Cornell, Gardner had 8 catches for 223 yards and 2 touchdowns. The 223 yards is the second-highest single-game total in Carleton history and was Gardner s school-record third career 200-yard receiving game. He was selected to D3FOOTBALL.COM's Team of the Week for games Sept Frank added 6 receptions for 104 yards. He corralled 3 touchdown passes, matching his career best and becoming the lone player in school history with a trio of games with at least three touchdown receptions. Gardner is now fourth in school history and is only six yards shy of reaching the 2,000-yard milestone. He has 112 receptions, moving him up to seventh on the program s career list. He is also third in the record book with 21 career touchdown receptions. Frank jumps to fourth with 17 career TDs and fifth with 1,880 yards. In 2007, Gardner recorded 56 catches for 1,054 yards, the 12th-best total in Division III. He hauled in 13 touchdown passes, equaling the school mark, and averaged 18.8 yards per reception, easily tops among the leading receivers in the conference. Gardner averaged receiving yards a game, fifth in the MIAC and 14th in the nation. Frank, an All-American in 2006 as he hauled in a school-record 74 passes, missed the first five games of the 2007 campaign with an injury sustained during training camp. He still finished second on the team with 35 receptions for 394 yards (11.3 avg) and five touchdowns. While Frank has crossed the 100-yard mark six times in his career, Gardner has a total of seven 100-yard games, including a trio of 200-yard explosions, giving him three of the top five receiving games (yardage) in school history. 4 >>O-LINE STEPS UP IN WEEK ONE The Knights' offensive line may be the youngest in the MIAC but the group had a solid opening week. LT Brett Amick/Ted Longabaugh, LG Jon Nelson, C Tanner Martin, RG Will Taylor, and RT Brad Eckelmann did not allow a sack in 30 attempts, the first time Carleton has done that in nearly two seasons. Just as importantly, the O-line opened holes for the running game, which totaled 205 yards, the highest figure the Knights have recorded since Oct. 8, 2005 versus St. Olaf. >>ZILLER LIVING UP TO PRE-SEASON HYPE Senior Safety Drew Ziller had six tackles in last week's win, including five solo stops and one tackle for loss. He also forced two fumbles by two-time All-Iowa Conference running back Travion Hardman in Carleton territory. Ziller was named to Lindy s 2008 pre-season Division III All-America second team. He paced the MIAC in tackles during conference play last year. >>LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET: Sept. 22, 2007 Safety Drew Ziller blocked a punt, had an interception and recorded 12 tackles, but Carleton dropped its MIAC opener at Bethel. The Royals out-gained the Knights on the afternoon, including a advantage in the running game. Leading 14-7 at the break, Bethel took advantage of good field position after halftime, finding the end zone on five of six possessions. Ben Wetzell was 20-for-28 for 236 yards and three touchdowns. He would go on to win the conference MVP award. Carleton's Shane Henfling finished the afternoon 15-for-32 for 178 yards with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. >>SCOUTING THE ROYALS Expectations for the Royals are high in 2008 after their 12-2 season that saw them repeat as MIAC champions and make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III national semifinals. The Royals return 12 starters, but the biggest holes Bethel has to fill will be at quarterback and safety with the loss of seniors in MIAC MVP Ben Wetzell and All-American Brandon Carr. Sophomore running back Logan Flannery is back after leading the MIAC in rushing yards last season. All-MIAC tackle John Scrabeck and 3-year starting guard Mike Ervin also return to anchor the offensive line. On defense, D3football.com Preseason All-American Second Team member Tim Cornish looks to step up and make big plays in the secondary. Bethel is coming off of a 10-7 loss to now No. 10 Wheaton College. The contest was played in a steady rain, causing both teams' offenses to bog down and have trouble holding onto the football. Despite the loss, the Royals defense did not allow an offensive touchdown, which means in eight quarters of play, they have allowed just one touchdown and only 13 points. >>NEXT WEEK: VS. MACALESTER......the battle for the Book of Knowledge The two highest-ranked academic institutions in Minnesota (according to US News & World Report) will battle for gridiron bragging rights when Carleton and Macalester take the field next week. The two teams will be battling for the Book of Knowledge for the 11th time, symbolizing the rivalry between the top two liberal arts colleges in the state. The game has informally been dubbed the "Brain Bowl" for many years as well. New Macalester head coach Tony Jennison was previously the program's defensive coordinator and is the 28th head coach in the 122-year history of the Macalester football program. The Scots are 1-1 entering Saturday's action, falling to former coach Glenn Caruso and the University of St. Thomas. The Scots defeated Crown 17-7 last week.
