About the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic: The Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic will feature collegiate crews from twenty colleges across the nation in Henley-style lightweight women s, open women s and men s rowing events. More than 130 individual races will take place between 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 on Sunday (see schedule below for details). In addition to the collegiate events on the slate, local high school and junior rowing clubs will also compete. All race events are free and open to the public, who are welcome to view racing from the shoreline and surrounding areas. Regatta Director and Stanford University Director of Rowing Craig Amerkhanian: This is the finest field that we ve had in the three years since the inception of the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic back in 2003, said Craig Amerkhanian, Stanford director of rowing and men s head coach. With the spectator-friendly venue at Redwood Shores, we look forward to giving the Bay Area the opportunity to see the collegiate racing up close. Without the ongoing support of Windermere Real Estate, which takes the event beyond collegiate racing and down to the community level, this event would not be possible. Live Results and Multimedia Content: Live race day audio and timing for all collegiate events at the 2005 Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic will be available from JAMCO at In addition, coaches interviews and other multimedia features will be made available on an ongoing basis throughout the event.
2 About the Competitors: The men s and women s collegiate fields for the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic are arguably the best collection of national collegiate rowing teams in any single regatta outside of conference and national championship events. In the men s varsity event, four of eight squads are ranked in the USRowing s Collegiate Top 10 and all eight teams are ranked among the nations 17 best crews in the Preseason Poll released March 30, On the women s side of the equation, seven of eight institutions can be found in the Top 20 of the Collegiate Rowing Association/USRowing poll released March 30, The lightweight women s poll has yet to be released. What is Henley-Style Racing? Henley-Style is a one-on-one or a two-boat race. Also referred to as a dual race, this format for competition is used at the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England. About Rowing Leagues and Championships: The Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta (IRA) is the oldest collegiate rowing championship in the country and remains the premier event for national rowing honors for collegiate men. The Cincinnati Regatta, raced on Harsha Lake, was recognized as the sport's heavyweight national championship from 1982 until 1996, but the winner of the Varsity Challenge Cup at IRA has since regained the recognition of national champion. The first women s collegiate championship was held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1980, but it was not until 1997 that women s rowing became an NCAA sport. Since then, the team title along with first varsity eights, second varsity eights and varsity fours titles have been contested at the NCAA Women s Rowing Women s lightweight rowing is not an NCAA sport and its national championship is contested at the IRA. Windermere Real Estate and Rowing: Windermere's heritage of supporting collegiate crew racing began 19 years ago when the company sponsored the first annual Windermere Cup regatta in Seattle. Held in partnership with the University of Washington, the Windermere Cup has become one of the largest community events in Seattle, welcoming national and international crew teams for exciting competition while commencing the official opening day of boating season for the waters of the Puget Sound. In 2003, Windermere expanded its involvement with the sport and launched, in conjunction with Stanford University, the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic at Redwood Shores.
