2 24 Chuck Priore Head Coach Al b a n y, 82 Set to begin his third season at Stony Brook, Chuck Priore has been the guiding force behind football s growth to a full-scholarship Football Championship Subdivision program and is quickly developing the Seawolves into one of the top FCS programs in the Northeast. In just his second season and against the toughest schedule Stony Brook has ever had, he led the team to a 6-5 record in In 2008 he will take the program on its next step as he prepares to lead Stony Brook through its first season as a member of the Big South Conference. In his first season at the helm of the Stony Brook football program, Priore guided the Seawolves to a 5-6 overall record, including a 5-2 mark in their final season in the Northeast Conference. Two of his athletes garnered all-nec honors, one was Defensive Rookie of the Year, and one, quarterback Josh Dudash, was named the Stony Brook University Male Athlete of the Year. Under Priore s guidance, the Seawolves gained over 1,300 yards on the ground and nearly 2,500 yards in the air. In addition, the Seawolves led the conference in passing offense and red zone offense, putting points on the board on 24 out of 27 red zone visits. Priore was named the second head football coach in Stony Brook Football history on December 10, He came to Stony Brook after compiling an impressive 39-9 record in six seasons at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut where he led the Bantams to four consecutive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) titles and a 30-game winning streak, the longest active winning streak in the country at the time. The three-time NESCAC Coach of the Year, Priore guided Trinity to a No. 1 ranking in New England, four straight conference titles and three consecutive undefeated seasons, going 31-1 during that four-year stretch. For two straight years ( ) he was named the America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III Region I Coach of the Year. During his six years at Trinity, he elevated the program to new heights, implementing a new, exciting, and prolific offensive system that produced some of the top performances in the region. The Bantams boasted five All-America selections on the offensive line in as many seasons and sent players to the AFCA Senior Aztec Bowl in Mexico against a Mexican All-Star team four times. In 2005, Trinity s defensive unit led the nation in total defense and boasted the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year while three members of the team landed NESCAC All-Academic honors. The Bantams winning streak was the subject of a one-hour documentary, which was broadcast nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV). The program focused on the Trinity football game against Williams College, which the Bantams won, 34-6, to break the New England Division III win streak record of 23 victories. Prior to Trinity, Priore served as the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Pennsylvania from 1992 to During Priore s tenure at Penn, the Quakers compiled an impressive record of 52-27, including three Ivy League titles and a 24-game winning streak. In 1998, the Penn offense set a school record for points in a season with 297. Penn also produced two NFL players on the offensive side of the ball under Priore; wide receiver Miles Macik who played for the Detroit Lions, and tailback Jim Finn has seen action for the Indianapolis Colts, the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants.

3 Before arriving at Penn, Priore was the offensive coordinator and strength coach at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. While at Union, the Dutchmen posted three undefeated seasons, three NCAA playoff appearances and a trip to the NCAA Division III Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Bowl game in Before joining Union s staff in 1987, Priore was the running backs and strength coach at the University at Albany, his alma mater, from 1983 to He also served as the head lacrosse coach at both Union and Albany. In his playing days at Albany, Priore was the starting fullback for three seasons and the team captain as a senior. In 1982, Priore was presented the Spud Kruzan Award as Albany s Outstanding Athlete. Priore earned his undergraduate degree in 1982 and his master s in business education from Albany in Priore is a native of Long Beach, N.Y. and graduated from Maria Regina High School. 8 Stony Brook Football Philosophy Our football program exists for our players. As coaches, we are responsible for preparing each individual to become the best football player he can be. Football is a microcosm of life. The most successful people in life exhibit discipline, a strong work ethic, loyalty, and teamwork. We demand that our players exhibit these characteristics. In our program, we teach our players to set goals, and they learn how to keep these goals in focus and achieve them. The ultimate purpose of our program is to have each student-athlete leave with a superior education and a feeling that his four years at Stony Brook, and our football program, have been the best four years of his life. The top priority of the student-athletes is to enhance their education. The academic success of our players is, therefore, our primary focus. The support we give to student-athletes can contribute greatly to their accomplishments in the classroom. One way that our program seeks to nurture our players academic success is through regular study halls for all freshmen. In recruiting student-athletes, our coaching staff looks for well-rounded individuals. In addition to athletic ability, maturity is of paramount importance to us. Great players are more than just superior athletes. They understand what it takes to excel in the classroom, to be active in the campus community, and to perform on the football field. OFFENSE Offensively, we will employ a multiple attack that will utilize different combinations of players. A good offense appears more complicated than it is to the defense and creates confusion in the minds of defenders. And while the balance between run and pass is partially based on game situations, a quality team must be able to run the football when it needs to, and a championship team also must be able to throw the ball effectively. Our running game will be based on our ability to stretch a defense and create running lanes. Our passing attack will be based on our ability to overload zones by releasing the maximum number of receivers into patterns. DEFENSE Great defensive teams must be able to stop the run and force an offense to pass the football. Keeping this in mind, our defense will be attack-oriented and will utilize multiple looks and simple schematics. We will defend the pass with a number of zone and man-to-man schemes. We want to be a big-play defense that minimizes the big plays generated by the opponent s offense. KICKING The kicking game is critical to our success. Special teams are just as important as our offense and defense. A starter on special teams is a starter in our program. Consistency on these teams will allow us to maintain field position and control the tempo of a game. It is less important to win games with special teams than it is to avoid losing games with them. 30
