2 2008 SEASON OUTLOOK On the first day of training for the 2008 season, the Cal men s gymnastics team posted a sign in the training gym. Winning the NC Championship starts today. The next day, they amended it. Winning the NC Championship started yesterday. This attitude characterizes both the drive as well as the talent of the 2008 Cal men s gymnastics team. We would like nothing more than to win the NC Championship on the floor in Maples Pavilion at Stanford, California head coach Barry Weiner said. Other than winning it at home, I can t think of any other scenario that would please me more. We re going for it. With 12 experienced lettermen and five outstanding additions, the 2008 men s gymnastics team will rely on experience and depth on every event for success this season. In years past, the Golden Bears relied on a select few to produce perfect results and lost championships because they did not have the necessary depth. According to Weiner, that is not the case this year. The 2008 squad has multiple athletes capable of giving meet-winning performances on any given day. To have such depth where you can count on anybody and still have the desired results, that s a huge advantage, Weiner said. This is the first time in a long time, maybe 10 years, that we ve been this deep. All of our guys are potential NC finalists on any given day. A veteran core of nine seniors, many of whom have three years of varsity experience, provide Cal with a solid base from which to build. Key among the returners is three-time NC individual champion Tim McNeill. Last season, McNeill won titles on pommel horse and parallel bars, which made him the second Golden Bear men s gymnast ever to win two NC championships in the same year and the first to repeat as a national champion on a particular event (pommel horse). McNeill, who has been plagued by injuries in the past, had shoulder surgery over the summer and has been rehabbing rigorously to prepare for the season. A healthy Tim McNeill is a force to be reckoned with, Weiner said. By the time he finishes his career here, I believe he ll walk away with more national championships than anyone in the history of our storied program. Senior Colin Christ also gave a great performance in the individual competition at NCs and tied for Senior Tim McNeill is tied for the most individual NC titles (three) in Cal men s gymnastics history after winning parallel bars and repeating as pommel horse national champion last season. second on the parallel bars. Christ, a three-time All-American, set new career best last season on rings (8.900) and parallel bars (9.475). Lost in Tim s great NC meet last year was the great meet that Colin had, Weiner said. He actually had the lead until the last guy went up and pushed him into second place. Senior Tyler Block is expected to return with a vengeance after injury last season and be strong on rings, parallel bars and high bar. Seniors Kyle Brady and Sean Brady will also join Block on rings. Other members of the talented senior Winning the NC Championship started yesterday. class include Mark Freeman, Aaron Moy, Kyle Litow and Hiroki Yokoyama. Moy, who is preparing a new vault of the highest difficulty, and Freeman will both be key contributors on vault. Kyle Litow specializes on floor exercises and vault, and Weiner expects him to contribute on other events. Yokoyama is co-captain with McNeill for the second year, and was a finalist on rings at the MPSF Championships. Cal has just two juniors this season Kyson Bunthuwong and Justin Franklin. Bunthuwong took eighth place on parallel bars at the NC Championships and earned his third All-America honor on the event. Franklin has potential to become a great all-around competitor and is a very talented gymnast, according to the coaches. The Golden Bears have a skilled sophomore class with Bryan del Castillo, Daniel Geri and Evan Roth. Weiner notes that Roth has the potential to be an NC champion on vault, and hopes that del Castillo will compete in the all-around for the Bears. Geri was last season s most improved gymnast and fit in seamlessly with Cal s top-notch parallel bars unit. Weiner has added three promising recruits in freshmen Kyle Bunthuwong, Eric Haeussler and Michael del Junco. Kyle, Kyson s younger brother, is a U.S. junior national team member, and Weiner calls him an explosive and dynamic gymnast. Haeussler chose Cal over several other schools and is expected to contribute immediately on floor and vault CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS Men's Gymnastics Media Guide

3 Weiner has termed del Junco the sleeper of this year s freshman class but reports that he has impressed the team on pommel horse and parallel bars. Despite the incredible depth on every event, one of the season s biggest challenges will be keeping the team healthy during the long and rigorous season. Cal begins in mid-january and continues until NC Championships in mid-april. It s all about being healthy in April and we re going to do everything we can to make sure that s what happens, Weiner said. We want to be competing on the last day of the year and give ourselves a chance to win because on that last day, anything can happen. FLOOR EXERCISE Cal has eight choices for the floor. Del Castillo led the Bears last season on floor, scoring above a in five of seven meets, including a team season high of Kyle Bunthuwong, Moy, Roth and Freeman will also add depth on floor. HIGH BAR Christ, the NC runner-up and twotime all-american on high bar, will anchor Cal s group on high bar. Weiner expects Block and del Castillo, both of whom set new career highs of last year, to perform exceptionally well for the Golden Bears. Kyson Bunthuwong, Brady and Freeman will round out the line-up. PARALLEL BARS Parallel bars was Cal s strongest event last season and the Bears return three All- Americans in that event McNeill, Kyson Bunthuwong and Christ. The trio occupied three of eight spots in the NC individual finals with McNeill earning the NC crown, Christ tying for second and Bunthuwong finishing in eighth. Kyle Bunthuwong has won multiple junior national championships and will add to the rotation. POMMEL HORSE The horse cost the Golden Bears a place in the top six last year, but Weiner does not foresee that happening again. McNeill, a two-time NC champion on pommel, leads Cal s line-up and looks to earn a third individual title on the event. Kyson Bunthuwong also excels on pommel horse and notched a new careerhigh of last season in the NC individual championships. STILL RINGS Cal boasts a large group of strong athletes for rings this season. Tyler [Block] and Tim [McNeill] are potential NC finalists, no doubt, Weiner said. I expect to see them in the NC finals. Block finished third at the MPSF Championships with a season-high last season and promises to improve upon last year s performances. Bryan, Roth, Brady and Yokoyama will also see time on rings. VAULT Last season, the Golden Bears had few vaults with high start values, which lowered their scores on this event, but the expectations are higher this year. Cal has increased the difficulty of its vaults and assembled a competitive squad for this event. Additionally, Weiner will select from a strong pool of nine different athletes. SCHEDULE The Golden Bears will face some of the nation s top gymnastics programs well before they travel to the conference championships and the NC Championships in the spring. Cal will face rival Stanford three times, including two competitions on the Cardinal s home turf. The Golden Bears host two dual meets this season Stanford on Jan. 18 to open the season and reigning national champion Penn State on March 15. We meet Stanford early, and we want to let them know that we re for real, Weiner said. Towards the end of the year, we have Penn State at home, and that s going to be a big meet. We want to give them a hard time in our gym. The Golden Bears will participate in the competitive Pacific Coast Classic again this year, where they took third place last year and defeated three teams ranked higher than them, including No. 1 Michigan. The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament will be no easy feat for any of the teams involved, four of which were ranked in the top 10 all of last season. Senior Colin Christ, a threetime All- American on high bar, looks to end his senior year with a national championship. Christ tied for second on parallel bars last season at NCs CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS Men's Gymnastics Media Guide 3

4 2008 CALIFORNIA COACHING STAFF Barry WEINER Head Coach, 17th Year at Cal Largely credited with developing the University of California men s gymnastics program into one of the nation s finest, Barry Weiner led the Golden Bears to n a t i o n a l championships in 1997 and He has had a total of eight Top 5 national finishes, including a fifth place finish in 2006, and 11 NC individual championships in his fifteen seasons at Cal. The ninth-eleventh individual championships during Weiner s regime were Tim McNeill, who earned two NC titles on pommel horse and one on parallel bars. The results of Weiner s hard work and dedication first paid dividends in 97 when he was named National Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to a perfect 17-0 regular season and the team s first NC team title since Weiner then outdid himself the next year, as Cal swept through the entire 98 season without a loss en route to its second-consecutive team championship. Following that season, Weiner was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year for the third time (he won the award for the fourth time in 2004) and National Coach of the Year for the second straight campaign. Including the 16-1 overall record of 2004, Weiner s career record stands at an impressive (.769) spanning over the last fifteen years. Weiner took the reins of the men s gymnastics program in 1992 after Cal s worst-ever 1-18 season in 91. Under his guidance, Cal rebounded to post a dual meet record, placing third in the conference and reaching the NC Regionals, where the team managed a seventh-place finish. Six individuals from that squad qualified for the NC Championships that year, including All- American Jason Bertram. Before arriving at Cal in September 1991, Weiner maintained a lengthy association with the United States Junior National Gymnastics Program. Over an 11-year period, he has coached 15 Junior National Team members, including two Junior National all-around champions.
