The teams haven t played since 2001, part of a home-andhome series in which the Cardinal won both games. The only other meeting between the programs came in 1988, when Stanford grabbed an win in Long Beach State s second NIT appearance. Deishuan Booker had outstanding passing numbers at the Advocare Invitational, tying the tournament record with 27 assists over three games. Booker became just the sixth player in the nation this season to record two straight double-doubles with assists in the process, finishing with 12 each against Oregon State and Nebraska. Booker is the first player since Long Beach State great Ed Ratleff to have 11 or more assists in back-to-back games, and is the first player since Billy Walker to have two games with 12 or more assists in his career. Walker is second behind Casper Ware in career assists at the Beach, graduating in Senior Gabe Levin continued his habit of performing at his best against ranked opponents. Levin picked up his first double-double of the year at No. 23 West Virginia, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, and then had a monster game against Nebraska, finishing with 22 points and a career high 16 rebounds. Levin has eight double-doubles in his career, and is averaging 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season, leading the team in both. Long Beach State s win over Oregon State was the program s 10th win over a major conference opponent in Dan Monson s tenure, and marked the second time in three tries that the Beach has defeated the Beavers BIG WEST STANDINGS - Nov. 27 Big West Overall W L Pct. THE PLAYERS Two players for Long Beach State earned preseason honors, as both Temidayo Yussuf and Gabe Levin were selected for the six-player Preseason All-Big West team, selected by the media covering the conference. Both have previously earned All-Big West honors, and look to anchor the team this season as both begin their fourth year at the Beach. Yussuf went on to earn second-team All-Big West honors last season, joining Levin as returners who have earned the honor, as Levin won in Despite this being the fourth year in the program for both players, the two have yet to play a Big West game together. Yussuf made his debut for the Beach in against Missouri, and played a big part in the November 24th win over Oregon State, scoring nine points with seven rebounds, while playing a role in limiting Drew Eubanks to six points after the Beaver big man scored 26 in the team s first meeting. Bryan Alberts topped his career high in scoring in three straight games, adding one point each time, culminating in his first 20-point game Monday against West Virginia. Now averaging 11.6 points per game, the Gonzaga graduate transfer is second on the Beach in scoring this season. In his third season in Spokane last year, Alberts played in 24 games and reached the National Championship game, which is the furthest any player to wear an LBSU uniform has gone in the postseason. Senior Barry Ogalue has been one of the main scorers for the team in , averaging 8.6 points per game. Ogalue is also averaging 2.8 rebounds as he plays a key role that began in a second-half turnaround last season for the senior that saw the Yuba CC transfer go from limited minutes to starting both games of the Big West Tournament and beginning this season in the starting five. Mason Riggins has started the first seven games of the season for Long Beach State, and has now started 35 games in his career. Overall, the junior from Whitewright, Texas leads the team in shooting percentage at 65.8 percent, and is averaging 7.0 points per game. Jordan Griffin began the season with a hot hand, starting the season 9-for-14 from behind the arc and is averaging 7.8 points per game. Griffin is part of a trio of sophomores who will be counted on to continue to contribute this season, joining LaRond Williams and Javonntie Jackson. Deishuan Booker has anchored the point guard position, starting all but one game for the Beach. Hitting a late three against Oregon State helped push the Beach over the top against the Beavers, and the junior transfer is averaging 8.2 points and 5.7 assists per game. Edon Maxhuni has also contributed at the point guard position, as the true freshman scored in double-figures in two straight games, including scoring 16 at Oregon State, and was one of the surprises of the preseason. Maxhuni has extensive international experience, playing for the Finland Youth National Team in multiple competitions. KJ Byers got off to a quick start, showcasing his athleticism in the season opener against the Dons. Byers had the most complete stat line of the night, scoring eight points with six rebounds while adding two assists, two blocks and two steals while making just one turnover and shooting 6-for-6 from the line. On the year, Byers is averaging 4.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while leading the team with 10 blocks. A slightly delayed start didn t slow down freshman Jordan Roberts in his first action with the team on Tuesday. The CIF Division II Player of the Year out of Ridgeview High School in Bakersfield, Roberts scored eight points in his debut for the Beach against San Francisco State after missing the opener against San Francisco. Senior Quentin Shropshire continues to contribute in a bench role, as the former track and field athlete at the Beach continues his two-sport story after ending the campaign in the rotation. Others rounding out the roster include his high school teammate Breamon Richard, and two expected redshirts in Milos Apic and Jaice Gardner. THIS AND THAT Through 67 seasons of Long Beach State Men s Basketball, the program has recorded 989 wins, leaving the team needing 11 more wins to record the 1,000th victory in program history. For the last four years, Long Beach State has had over 20 games broadcast nationally through its TV partners, and set a record last season with 27 of the team s 34 games being available on national television. In , Long Beach State may have as many as 16 games televised in the regular season, and will have every other game available to view via live stream. Long Beach State is continuing its partnership with 22 West Media (formerly KBEACH) to provide online and HD radio broadcasts of every single game this season. In addition, LBSU has also entered into an agreement with AM 830 to broadcast 12 games this season over-the-air, the first time in over ten years that Beach Basketball has regularly been on AM radio in Southern California.

He is also one of just active coaches nationally to begin the year as his program s wins leader. Now with 105 conference wins in 10 seasons, Monson is the 7th coach in Big West history to record 100 conference wins. Under Monson, Long Beach State has also made the postseason in four out of the last six seasons. Over the past eight seasons, Long Beach State has ranked no lower than sixth in the nation in non-conference strength of schedule, and the Beach has ranked in the top four in each of the last six years, including leading the nation both in and in LBSU Non-Conference SOS Per Ken Pomeroy Long Beach State will once again play a tremendous non-conference slate, facing three teams that began the season in the Top 10 in Michigan State, Arizona and West Virginia all on the road. The Beach also faced Missouri to open the Advocare Invitational, played Oregon State twice, and ended their time in Orlando against Nebraska. LBSU currently ranks sixth in the nation in non-conference strength of schedule. While the schedule is still tough, the travel is very different. Last season, Long Beach State traveled over 23,000 miles in the preseason, and the team s nine-game road swing totaled over 15,000 miles. LBSU s total travel in the non-conference in is less than that trip alone, with its longest travel swing just under 7,000 miles as part of the Advocare Invitational in Orlando. Long Beach State s win over San Francisco was the team s first road win to open the season since the season. Under Dan Monson, however, the team has generally opened the season at home, as the opener was just the third time in 11 years the 49ers have started away from the Walter Pyramid.

4 Fresno State 106, Long Beach State 70 LONG BEACH, Calif. An ice cold start for Long Beach State ruined the chances for victory in the team s return to the Walter Pyramid, as Fresno State won on Saturday afternoon. Last Time Out Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Fresno State vs Long Beach State 12/2/17 4:00 p.m. at Long Beach, Calif. (Walter Pyramid) Long Beach State (3-6) went 1-for-4 in two trips to the foul line in the team s two first possessions, and Fresno State (6-2) would open up a 21-1 lead in just over the first six minutes. The Beach started the game 1-for-11 from the field, with a Temidayo Yussuf three-point play finally giving LBSU the team s first field goal of the game. The lead would increase to as many as 29 points in the first half. While Long Beach State was able to keep the lead from increasing until the late going of the contest, the Beach would never pull within 20 points on the way to the loss. Well that wasn t just disappointing, it was embarrassing, said head coach Dan Monson following the game. I really felt like when we came back today, we would have some good energy, with a good crowd and it being exciting to be home, but unfortunately, we didn t have any. It s humbling. We ve got to bounce back in less than 24 hours. Yussuf led the team with 13 points off of the bench, while Jordan Griffin had 11 points with a pair of steals. Jaron Hopkins led five Bulldogs in double-figures with 26 points. Long Beach State will have a quick turnaround, hosting Stanford at 2 p.m. on Sunday, also in the Walter Pyramid. Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear for this year s Teddy Bear Toss at halftime, benefitting Spark of Love. 12 Dan Monson has rebuilt the Long Beach State basketball program in his ten seasons with the Beach. The winningest coach in LBSU history, Monson has piled up 170 wins at LBSU and led Long Beach State to three Big West Championships, six top three finishes, three NIT appearances as well as a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Monson s success at Long Beach State has been rewarded with three Big West Coach of the Year awards, as well as back-to-back NABC All-District Coach recognition from and The conference coaching award following the season marked the fourth time that Monson has been recognized as a league s top coach, previously winning the honor as the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 1998 following his first season at Gonzaga. Success at the collegiate level hasn t been the only measure of what Monson has accomplished at Long Beach State. Two-time Big West Player of the Year Casper Ware reached the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers, becoming the first 49er to enter the NBA since Big West Player of the Year James Ennis also became the first LBSU player picked in the NBA Draft since 1992, a second-round selection of the Atlanta Hawks. Ennis has gone on to play for three NBA teams, most recently with the Memphis Grizzlies. Playing the nation s toughest non-conference schedule, the Beach went 7-9 against Top 100 teams, and picked up signature wins over Seton Hall and BYU. Let by Big West Newcomer of the Year Nick Faust the Beach went on to face Washington in the first round of the NIT. In , Monson recorded his 300th win as a head coach when the 49ers defeated Cal State Fullerton on the road, winning With that milestone win, Monson became the second skipper in the league to reach 300 victories. His 105 wins in conference play at the Beach rank seventh in the history of the Big West, dating back to In , Monson directed a squad that lost four starters from the NCAA Tournament team, and guided them to a another Big West championship, a third-consecutive regular season championship, the first time in over 40 years The Beach had won three straight conference titles. LBSU s championship season in came on the heels of a four-year run based on a nucleus of solid recruiting in his first few years on campus. His first recruiting class featured Greg Plater, the second-leading all-time 3-point shooter at the school, while his second recruiting class of Larry Anderson, Eugene Phelps, T.J. Robinson and Casper Ware may go down in school history as the best recruiting class of all-time at Long Beach State. Anderson, Phelps, Robinson and Ware all rank among the all-time leaders in school history in at least two categories and all four have earned all-league honors at least twice. Three of the four own a school record. Ware is the school s all-time assist leader, Anderson has more steals than anybody in 49er history, and Robinson is not only the all-time leading rebounder at Long Beach State, but the leading rebounder in the history of the Big West Conference. Ware established himself as not only one of the top players in the conference, but one of the best players in the nation. Named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, honoring the top point guard in Division I, as both a junior and a senior, Ware won Big West Conference Player of the Year awards and was named an honorable mention Associated Press All-American in 2011 and 2012, while also being named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District IX Player of the Year as a senior. In , Ware became the first player in Big West history to be named both the league s player of the year and its defensive player of the year. His first-team all-league selection made him the third Monson recruit at LBSU to be named first-team all-league. Ware also was named first-team All-District 9 by the NABC and first-team All-District IX by the USBWA as both a junior and senior. Monson s team also picked up two wins over nationally-ranked teams in , handing No. 9 Pittsburgh an defeat on the road before knocking off No. 14 Xavier at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. The two wins over ranked teams marked the first time a LBSU team had beaten multiple top 25 teams since the season. Monson was tabbed as the Coaching Record By Victories Coach Years Record 1. 13 16th head coach in Long Beach State men s basketball history on April 7, He inherited a depleted roster but still managed to be competitive in his first season at LBSU. Monson has been a Division I head coach for 20 years, during which he has compiled a career record of (.546), with 11 trips to postseason play, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 1999 with Gonzaga University. Monson was the head coach at the University of Minnesota for seven-plus years, compiling a mark and reaching postseason play in five of his seven seasons. In he led the Gophers to a memorable year. He engineered the second-best Big Ten turnaround in the previous 20 seasons, finishing with a 10-6 conference mark after posting just three league wins the previous campaign. Minnesota reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since and Monson led the Golden Gophers to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since In the Gophers advanced to their fifth postseason appearance in six years. Senior guard Vincent Grier was named All-Big Ten and All-District for the second straight year. In Minnesota went and earned the program s first trip to the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden. Monson reached two personal coaching milestones in With a victory over Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, he earned his 100th victory at Minnesota. When he defeated Purdue on February 26, 2005 he picked up his 150th career head-coaching victory. With 100 victories in his first six years at Minnesota, Monson ranks second all-time at the school behind Jim Dutcher ( ) in wins during his first six years as head coach. Monson stepped into the Minnesota job on the heels of NCAA sanctions against the school. Those NCAA violations during the mid-1990 s severely limited scholarships and put strict recruiting sanctions on the program since the summer of 1999, coinciding with Monson s arrival at Minnesota. The summer of 2005 was the first Monson and his staff could recruit on par with every other college basketball program and that season concluded with a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the programs first year off probation. Prior to accepting the Minnesota job on July 24, 1999, Monson was the head coach at Gonzaga for two years. In he led the Bulldogs to within a breath of the Final Four. Gonzaga, which went 28-7 on the year and won the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships, defeated such notable NCAA powers as Minnesota (75-63), Stanford (82-74) and Florida (73-72) before bowing out to eventual national-champion Connecticut (67-62) in the Elite Eight. His first year as head coach at Gonzaga resulted in a mark, as the Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the NIT. Monson had a sparkling (.754) record in his two seasons as the head coach of the Bulldogs. Monson spent 11 years helping build the Gonzaga program. He also assisted Oliver Purnell at the 1999 Men s World University Games in Mallorca, Spain where the U.S. won the gold medal. With Team USA, Monson had the opportunity to coach future NBA players Sean May, Brendan Haywood, Bracey Wright, Chris Paul, Michael Redd, Mark Madsen, Kenyon Martin and Charlie Villanueva. Monson grew up around basketball as his father, Don, was a well-respected collegiate coach.
