Thursday also, coincidentally, is the 49ers Green game, focusing on renewable energy and limiting waste as part of a larger campus initiative. With 18 points February 15 against Cal Poly, junior Mike Caffey blew past the 1,000 point milestone at Long Beach State, becoming the 23rd player to reach the pleteau. Caffey also passed up two NBA players in Bryon Russell and George Trapp, and is now the No. 21 all-time scorer at Long Beach State. With double-figures Thursday against Hawai i, Caffey can pass four other players, becoming the No. 17 scorer in school history. Caffey received Preseason All-Big West honors, one of six players picked one season after earning First-Team All-Big West honors as a sophomore. Caffey is leading the 49ers in scoring with 16.4 points per game, ranking sixth in the Big West and has scored over 20 points nine times on the year. Caffey is also leading the team with 112 assists, and is third in rebounding with 4.6 boards per game. His minutes per game average is also second in the Big West this season. Since the arrival of Travis Hammonds and Tyler Lamb, the 49ers have turned things around after a 1-9 start. Defensively, the team has been competitive, making the team s offensive output the key to victory. The key number is shooting 35%; Since Dec. 19, the team is 11-1 when passing that number while going 0-4 when shooting under that mark. The only loss when shooting over that mark came against UCSB on a buzzer-beater. BROADCAST INFORMATION Rob Brender returns for his fifth season of play-by-play for Long Beach State. His audio call can be found at kbeach.org and on HD Radio or via the KBEACH Radio App. Fox Sports One s Jason Schwartz will be making his first appearance on the call Thursday as a temporary replacement for Brender, who remains in Florida for Spring Training. - Probable Starters - POS # Player Ht Wt Yr. Lamb scored 20 points off of the bench against USC, helping the 49ers earn their first win over a Pac-12 opponent at home since 1999 in a win. Lamb has scored in double-figures in 13 of the 16 games he s played with the 49ers, and is averaging 15.3 points per game. Senior Dan Jennings continues to put up big numbers for the 49ers in his final season. Jennings ranks fourth in the Big West in rebounding with 8.1 rebounds per game, and is third on the 49ers with 10.0 points per game. Four times Jennings has led the 49ers in scoring, and has topped the team in rebounding 17 times in , including recording his fifth double-double of the year against CSUN with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jennings also became the first 49er in two years to have a perfect day from the field, shooting 6-for-6 against the Matadors. After scoring 12 points against Loyola Marymount, junior A.J. Spencer has secured a spot in the starting lineup, scoring in double-figures in 12 times. The junior college transfer recently helped lift the 49ers over Hawai i scoring a career-high 24 points, and is fourth on the team with an 9.3 ppg average. Junior college transfer David Samuels picked up his second double-double of the year against UC Davis, putting up 10 points and 10 rebounds against the Aggies. Samuels finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds at NC State while recording his first double-double earlier in the season. His 5.3 rebounds per game rank 14th in the Big West, and second on the team behind Jennings. Originally serving as a backup to Mike Caffey, Branford Jones forced his way into the starting lineup as an extra ball-handler against VCU, and responded with a breakout game, scoring 19 points in 37 minutes with just one turnover against VCU s havoc defense. The redshirt freshman is continuing to showcase much of the promise the guard showed before going down with an ankle injury in the first game of the year last season. Jones currently ranks seventh on the team in scoring, averaging 5.5 points per game and is second on the team with 48 assists. The 49ers also bring in freshman Travis Hammonds, who joined Long Beach State after enrolling for the spring semester. Hammonds is a 6-6 guard who hails from Columbia, S.C., and had an outstanding game against UCI, leading The Beach with 12 points. His true breakout came against UC Davis however, scoring 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting with six rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead the 49ers over the Aggies. The true freshman picked up his first double-double at UC Irvine with 10 points and 10 rebounds, the third 49er of the year to record a double-double. Hammonds ranks sixth on the team in scoring, averaging 6.0 points per game with 3.0 boards per game. Charles Lockett remains on a redshirt year, and senior forward Edgar Garibay is out for the year with an ACL tear. THIS AND THAT Long Beach State will finish the season with 19 games broadcast on either national television or on the ESPN networks. That marks the most regular season total television appearances ever for Long Beach State, and the most national appearances since the campaign, equalling that season with 14. Long Beach State once again faced a grueling non-conference schedule. The 49ers faced No. 5 Arizona in their first road test on November 11, and continued to play two more Top 15 opponents in No. 14 Michigan and No. 10 VCU at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The 49ers also faced a Big East opponent into the Walter Pyramid when Creighton arrived December 3. The 49ers have also played Kansas State twice, beat USC at home, travelled to Washington and NC State, and closed out non-conference play with a trip to No. 25 Missouri. Long Beach State s strength of schedule is also objectively among the highest - the 49ers closed out non-conference rank as having the No. 3 Non-Conference SOS as ranked by kenpom.com. The LBSU schedule was also ranked No. 2 by WarrenNolan.com at the conclusion of non-conference play. With Long Beach State s win Dec. 19 against USC, Dan Monson moved into second-place in coaching wins at Long Beach State with 106, passing Seth Greenberg. Monson currently has 116 wins at Long Beach State. The top spot is held by Jerry Tarkanian, who won 122 games as the coach of the 49ers from 1968 to Following Saturday s nine-point win over Cal Poly, Long Beach State moved into the conference lead in scoring margin through 11 games, averaging a +7.7 margin, besting both UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine. The 49ers also rank second in both steals and turnover margin, playing strong defense through 12 games of conference play.

4 ABOUT HAWAI I Hawaii is the top scoring team in the conference, averaging 79.1 points per game in league play throughout the season, and shooting a Big West best 46.6 percent, led by center Issac Fotu, who individually leads the league, shotting 61.7 percent on the year, scoring 18.1 points per game in league action. It was Long Beach State that put on an offensive show in the first meting between the teams in 2014, though, as the 49ers shot a season-high 60-percent from the field in a victory. Mike Caffey scored 29 points and A.J. Spencer put up 24, both career highs as the 49ers picked up a big road win. That win extended the LBSU lead in a tight series between the teams, as the 49ers now lead the all-time record 8-6. The teams split last season in the Rainbow Warriors first season in the Big West. The Rainbow Warriors have one preseason All-Big West selection, Christian Standhardinger, who is living up to his billing, leading Hawai i this season. Standhardinger leads Hawaii in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 17.8 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game. Averaging 80.6 points per game as a team, three other Hawai i players are averaging double-figures on the year. Fotu is next with 15.7 points per game, while Garrett Nevels is averaging 13.9 points per game and Brandon Spearman is putting up 11.3 per game. UP NEXT The 49ers will head to Cal State Fullerton for a rivalry game at Titan Gym on Saturday. 5 Long Beach State 79, UC Davis 57 DAVIS, Calif. A 14-2 second half run extended an already healthy lead for Long Beach State, helping the 49ers improve to 8-4 in Big West play as LBSU won Thursday on the road at UC Davis. A.J. Spencer led the 49ers with 14 points. In all, however, it was a balanced effort for Long Beach State (12-14, 8-4 Big West) that carried the 49ers over UC Davis (8-18, 3-8 Big West). Spencer led the way in scoring, but Mike Caffey added 13 points with six rebounds and six assists. Dan Jennings neared a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds while Tyler Lamb also finished with 11, all scored in the second half. In all, the 49ers shot 55.4 percent from the field, passing 50 percent for the second straight game, and were actually better from beyond the arc, shooting 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from three. Neither team started the game particularly well, and UC Davis held a lead at the 10-minute mark of the first half. Long Beach State answered back, and took the lead back on a free throw from Spencer with 8:56 left in the first half. Leading by four with 1:38 to go, the 49ers pushed out to a big halftime edge with back-to-back 3-pointers from Branford Jones and Spencer to end the half, going into the locker room ahead Long Beach State scored the first two buckets of the second half, and after a Brynton Lemar field goal, The 49ers would score 10 points unanswered, opening the half on a 14-2 run and building the lead to 22 at on a Caffey 3-pointer. The 49er lead would grow as large as 28 points on a Jennings alley-oop with just over seven minutes to play, and Dan Monson began to phase out the starters, as the bench held the final gap over 20 points while playing out most of the clock following the final media timeout of the game. Long Beach State has Saturday off as the other eight teams in the Big West face off. The 49ers are back in action Thursday in the Walter Pyramid, hosting Hawai i at 7:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Prime Ticket. Last Time Out Long Beach State vs UC Davis 02/20/14 7 p.m. at Davis, Calif. 12 Dan Monson has rebuilt the Long Beach State basketball program in his six seasons with the 49ers. Monson has taken a program that won just six games in his first season at LBSU to three straight Big West Conference championships, two NIT appearances and an appearance in the 2012 NCAA Tournament in the last three seasons. The 49ers have won 66 games over the last three seasons, with two victories over nationally-ranked teams. Those 66 wins have come despite Monson s 49ers playing the nation s toughest ranked non-conference schedule each of the last four seasons. Monson s success in the past three seasons has been rewarded with three Big West Coach of the Year awards, as well as back-to-back NABC All-District Coach recognition from and The conference coaching award following the season marked the fourth time that Monson has been recognized as a league s top coach, previously winning the honor as the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 1998 following his first season at Gonzaga. DAN MONSON (Mun-son) School Record: (7th Year) Overall Record: (17th Year) Education University of Idaho Bachelor of Science-Mathematics University of Alabama-Birmingham Masters-Education Coaching Experience Long Beach State Head Coach Minnesota Head Coach Gonzaga Head Coach Gonzaga Associate Head Coach Gonzaga Assistant Coach Alabama-Birmingham Graduate Assistant Honors 1998 WCC Coach of the Year 2011 NABC All-District 9 Coach Big West Coach of the Year 2012 NABC All-District 9 Coach Big West Coach of the Year 2013 Big West Coach of the Year His work with the squad was particularly impressive, working with a squad that had lost four starters from the NCAA Tournament Team, and integrated four Division I transfers during the season, including three that were eligible during the spring semester. Senior James Ennis helped that transition, earning Big West Player of the Year honors while helping the 49ers post a 14-4 league record, earning a third-straight regular season title, the first time that LBSU had won three straight conference titles in nearly 40 years. Ennis was joined by guard Mike Caffey as a first-team All-Big West selection following the campaign. In six seasons at Long Beach State, Monson has seen five of his recruits earn first-team all-conference honors. Monson s work with developing Ennis in his two seasons at Long Beach State paid off as the forward became the first 49er picked in the NBA Draft since 1992, a second-round selection of the Atlanta Hawks before being traded to the Miami Heat. Ennis became the fourth player to play under Monson selected in the NBA Draft, joining Joel Przybilla, Rick Rickert and Kris Humpries from his time at Minnesota. The 49ers championship season in came on the heels of a four-year run based on a nucleus of solid recruiting in his first few years on campus. His first recruiting class featured Greg Plater, the second-leading all-time 3-point shooter at the school, while his second recruiting class of Larry Anderson, Eugene Phelps, T.J. Robinson and Casper Ware may go down in school history as the best recruiting class of all-time at Long Beach State. Anderson, Phelps, Robinson and Ware all rank among the all-time leaders in school history in at least two categories and all four have earned all-league honors at least twice. Three of the four own a school record. Ware is the school s all-time assist leader, Anderson has more steals than anybody in 49er history, and Robinson is not only the all-time leading rebounder at Long Beach State, but the leading rebounder in the history of the Big West Conference. Ware established himself as not only one of the top players in the conference, but one of the best players in the nation. Named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, honoring the top point guard in Division I, as both a junior and a senior, Ware won Big West Conference Player of the Year awards and was named an honorable mention Associated Press All-American in 2011 and 2012, while also being named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District IX Player of the Year as a senior. In , Ware became the first player in Big West history to be named both the league s player of the year and its defensive player of the year. His first-team all-league selection made him the third Monson recruit at LBSU to be named first-team all-league. Ware also was named first-team All-District 9 by the NABC and first-team All-District IX by the USBWA as both a junior and senior. Monson s team also picked up two wins over nationally-ranked teams in , handing No. 9 Pittsburgh an defeat on the road before knocking off No. 14 Xavier at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. The two wins over ranked teams marked the first time a LBSU team had beaten multiple top 25 teams since the season. Monson notched his 250th career win during that same season, on the same night LBSU clinched its second consecutive Big West Conference title, when the 49ers beat UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 22. Monson s success during the last two seasons came after his team nearly broke through in After finishing the season tied for third place in the Big West, the 49ers jelled in the Big West Tournament and advanced to the title game, just missing a berth in the NCAA Tournament after a five-point loss in the championship. During the season, Monson led LBSU through the toughest schedule in school history and in the process picked up his 200th career win at Cal State Northridge on Jan. 28, The 49ers faced five teams ranked in the top 25, including the eventual National Champions, Duke, and a Final Four team, West Virginia. Monson also led the 49ers to their first win ever over national-power UCLA and a win over eventual WAC champion Utah State. Long Beach State played eight teams that eventually advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Monson was tabbed as the 16th head coach in Long Beach State men s basketball history on April 7, He inherited a depleted roster but still managed to be competitive in his first season at LBSU. Monson has been a Division I head coach for 16 years, during which he has compiled a career record of (.560), with nine trips to postseason play, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 1999 with Gonzaga University.

13 Monson was the head coach at the University of Minnesota for seven-plus years, compiling a mark and reaching postseason play in five of his seven seasons. In he led the Gophers to a memorable year. He engineered the second-best Big Ten turnaround in the previous 20 seasons, finishing with a 10-6 conference mark after posting just three league wins the previous campaign. Minnesota reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since and Monson led the Golden Gophers to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since In the Gophers advanced to their fifth postseason appearance in six years. Senior guard Vincent Grier was named All-Big Ten and All-District for the second straight year. In Minnesota went and earned the program s first trip to the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden. Monson reached two personal coaching milestones in With a victory over Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, he earned his 100th victory at Minnesota. When he defeated Purdue on February 26, 2005 he picked up his 150th career head-coaching victory. With 100 victories in his first six years at Minnesota, Monson ranks second all-time at the school behind Jim Dutcher ( ) in wins during his first six years as head coach. Monson stepped into the Minnesota job on the heels of NCAA sanctions against the school. Those NCAA violations during the mid-1990 s severely limited scholarships and put strict recruiting sanctions on the program since the summer of 1999, coinciding with Monson s arrival at Minnesota. The summer of 2005 was the first Monson and his staff could recruit on par with every other college basketball program and that season concluded with a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the programs first year off probation. Prior to accepting the Minnesota job on July 24, 1999, Monson was the head coach at Gonzaga for two years. In he led the Bulldogs to within a breath of the Final Four. Gonzaga, which went 28-7 on the year and won the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships, defeated such notable NCAA powers as Minnesota (75-63), Stanford (82-74) and Florida (73-72) before bowing out to eventual national-champion Connecticut (67-62) in the Elite Eight. His first year as head coach at Gonzaga resulted in a mark, as the Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the NIT. Monson had a sparkling (.754) record in his two seasons as the head coach of the Bulldogs. Monson spent 11 years helping build the Gonzaga program. He began at GU as an assistant coach in 1988 and spent six years laying the groundwork. In he was elevated to associate head coach under head coach Dan Fitzgerald. Three years later he took over full control of the Gonzaga program. He led Gonzaga to a West Coast Conference title in 1998 and was named the WCC Coach of the Year. The squad set a school-record with its 24 wins and Monson was also named the National Rookie Coach of the Year by Basketball Times. Monson was a key figure in the Bulldogs turnaround in the 1990 s. Gonzaga had a record of over 10 seasons and he was responsible for recruiting many of the key players in Gonzaga s NCAA Sweet 16 appearances from From the time Monson was named associate head coach in 1995, Gonzaga averaged 22 wins per season and reached postseason play every year but one. Prior to joining the Bulldogs staff, Monson spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach under Gene Bartow at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Monson played one year of football at Idaho, but turned his attention to coaching when a knee injury cut short his gridiron career. He coached the boys basketball team at Oregon City (Ore.) High School for one year prior to taking the UAB graduate assistant post. A 1985 graduate of the University of Idaho with a bachelor degree in mathematics, Monson earned his master s degree in education with a concentration on athletic administration from UAB in In addition to his 20-plus seasons coaching Division I basketball, as either a head or assistant coach, Monson has served on two coaching staffs for USA Basketball representing the United States in international competition. Monson gained valuable experience by coaching on the international level with USA Basketball. He was an assistant coach for Kelvin Sampson on the gold medal winning 20-and-Under World Championships for Young Men Qualifying Tournament squad in the summer of 2004 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He also assisted Oliver Purnell at the 1999 Men s World University Games in Mallorca, Spain where the U.S. won the gold medal. With Team USA, Monson had the opportunity to coach future NBA players Sean May, Brendan Haywood, Bracey Wright, Chris Paul, Michael Redd, Mark Madsen, Kenyon Martin and Charlie Villanueva. Monson grew up around basketball as his father, Don, was a well-respected collegiate coach. Don was the head coach at Idaho and Oregon and was an assistant coach under Jud Heathcote at Michigan State ( ) for two years. Monson and his wife Darci have four children, a son, MicGuire, a daughter, Mollie, a son, Maddox and a daughter, McKenna.
