The cancelation marked the second time in four years the Bearkats have lost their Parents Weekend game due to a hurricane. The 2005 contest with Missouri State was canceled due to Hurricane Rita. The Bearkats have won twice against BCS teams, defeating LA-Lafayette in 2000 and LA-Monroe 20-9 in With Kansas ranked #19 in the polls, the contest also will mark the fourth time the Bearkats have faced a nationally ranked BCS opponent. Sam Houston has played Big 12 teams four times (Baylor in 2003, Texas Tech in 2005, Texas in 2006, and Oklahoma State last year). The Bearkats also played Baylor in 1990 when the Bears were a member of the Southwest Conference. Austin Texas State-San Marcos Nicholls State SAM HOUSTON STATE BEARKATS Sam Houston competes as a member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision in the Southland Conference. The Bearkats won the SLC title in 1991, 2001 and Each of those championship years, Sam Houston earned NCAA Division I playoff berths. The Bearkats reached the national quarterfi nals in 2001 and the semifi nals in Bearkats playing in the National Football League include quarterback Josh McCown (Panthers) and Keith Davis (Cowboys).

2 SHSU Football - Page 2 FOURTH YEAR UNDER COACH WHITTEN Todd Whitten and his staff begin their fourth season at Sam Houston State, seeking to build on back-to-back winning seasons and Southland Conference runner-up fi nishes. Thirty-eight lettermen return from last year s 7-4 squad including six starters on offense and and six on defense. THE BEARKAT OFFENSE Quarterback Rhett Bomar led the Southland and ranked No. 8 nationally in total offense (290.6 yards per game) last year. In his fi rst game of 2008, the 6-2 senior directed the offense to seven TDs and a fi eld goal in its eight fi rst half possessions in a victory over East Central Oklahoma. Bomar passed for 198 yards and four TDs and rushed for another 30. Senior wide receiver Catron Houston had fi ve receptions for 72 yards including TD catches of 7 and 24 yards. Junior college transfer Jason Madkins caught three passes for 39 yards including an 11-yard score. Houston is one of three returning starters at wide receiver for the Kats. Houston caught 46 passes for 597 yards last year. Also returning are Justin Wells (42 catches for 660 yards) and Trey Payne (12 catches for 136 yards). Two areas of concern for the SHSU are the offensive line and running back. The Bearkats lost three All-Southland Conference offensive linemen (Brandon Hale, Ryan Dretke and Brennan Williams) and All-American tight end Blake Martin to graduation. This year s offensive line two-deep consists of four seniors, two juniors and four freshmen. Transfer James Aston rushed eight times for 115 yards and two touchdowns and had a long gain of 49 yards as the starting running back in the East Central victory THE BEARKAT DEFENSE Defensive end Chris Brown, who accounted for fi ve of the Bearkats 13 sacks in 2007 and Eric Mikolajchak return in the front line. Both earned All-Southland Conference honors last year. Nolan Bucek led the Southland in tackles (88) in 2007 and Luke McCall added 72 stops as linebackers last year. Cornerbacks Wonseleh Brewer and Stanley Garrett return as starters in the secondary. The Bearkats must replace three All-Southland Conference players. David Branch was a two-time All-SLC selection at defensive end and safeties Byran Richmond and Carlton Cobey each earned All-SLC honors as seniors last year. The defense forced six turnovers in the East Central victory. SPECIAL TEAMS Kicker Taylor Wilkins was 33-for-33 on extra points and hit 14-of- 18 fi eld goals last season, The junior kicking specialist produced a career long 45 yard field goal against East Central and was successful on seven extra point attempts. Derrick Raymer punted four times for a 31.8 average. ALL-SOUTHLAND RETURNEES Six All-Southland Conference Bearkats return. Defensive end Chris Brown was a fi rst team selection. Kicker Taylor Wilkins and linebacker Nolan Bucek were named to the second team. Quarterback Rhett Bomar, offensive lineman Hunter Schmidt and defensive lineman Eric Mikolajchak were honorable mention All- Southland. BEARKAT OFFENSIVE SUCCESS In the past nine seasons, Sam Houston has led the Southland Conference in passing four times and total offense three seasons. Three Bearkat quarterbacks have earned Southland Player of the Year honors and been fi nalists for the Walter Payton Award as NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision offensive player of the year. SAM HOUSTON HEAD COACH TODD WHITTEN Todd Whitten, a record-setting quarterback in the mid-1980s in the Southland Conference and the coach who set in motion the Bearkats current trend of offensive success, is in his fourth season as Sam Houston State University head football coach. Whitten is in his fi rst three years at the helm of the Kat program. That includes back-to-back Southland Conference runner-up fi nishes in 2006 and In nine years as a head coach he stands He directed Tarleton State to a record in his six seasons as head coach of the Texans. He earned Coach of the Year honors four times, directing an offense that led the Lone Star Conference in total offense and passing yardage. He produced 80 All-Lone Star Conference plyaers and led the Texans to the NCAA Division II post-season playoffs twice. Whitten served as as Sam Houston s offensive coordinator in 1999 and was an assistant at UTEP, New Mexico State and Texas Tech. He earned his Bachelor s degree from Stephen F. Austin in 1987 and his Master s degree from Texas Tech in He was an All-Gulf Star Conference quarterback for SFA. SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY Sam Houston State University was founded in 1879 and stands today as the third oldest public university in Texas. Created to train school teachers, today SHSU offers a broad range of programs leading to bachelor s, master s and doctoral degrees. The University is named for General Sam Houston, the only man in U.S. history to be governor of two states (Tennessee and Texas). He led Texas to independence with the victory over Santa Anna at San Jacinto. He was the fi rst president of the Republic of Texas and served as a senator and governor for the state of Texas. He died in 1863 and is buried in Huntsville not far from the campus named in his honor. Perhaps Sam Houston State s most famous alum is former CBS News Anchor Dan Rather.

3 SHSU Football - Page 8 Feature Articles Bearkat Offense Sharp In Opener From The Huntsville Item / By Cody Stark Assistant Sports Editor Anybody who had questions as to whether Sam Houston State quarterback Rhett Bomar was fully recovered from last year s season-ending knee surgery got the answers they were looking for Thursday night. Making his fi rst start since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last November, Bomar was sharp in the Bearkats dismantling of East Central Oklahoma. He led Sam Houston to scoring drives on all eight of its fi rst-half possessions, completing 14-of-22 passes for 198 yards and four touchdowns before being pulled at halftime. About the only concern was how Bomar would react after getting hit for the fi rst time, and it didn t take long to squash those thoughts. With the Bearkats driving deep in Tiger territory on the game s opening possession, Bomar took off and picked up six yards on an option keeper before being tackled at the ECU 7-yard line. He bounced up, ran back to the huddle and two plays later hit wide receiver Catron Houston for a 7-yard score. No worries, no problems. I thought maybe (getting hit) would (worry me) and I would think about it until I got hit fi rst, said Bomar, who also added a 30-yard run in the second quarter. But I ran an option and I cut it up and the guy actually dove at my knee. But after that, I really didn t think about it, and when I got hit, it was normal. I didn t even think about my knee at all, and it felt good out there. With Bomar s health concerns laid to rest, another question was answered just how much had the wide receiving corps improved from a year ago? The Bearkats had an awful lot of drops during the 2007 season, but that wasn t the case Thursday night. Houston, who steadily progressed in spring drills, had a solid outing against the Tigers. Aside from a fumbled punt, he caught fi ve passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns, which equaled his 07 total of visits to the end zone. Houston s best catch came with 9:44 to go in the second quarter when he leaped up and snagged a high pass from Bomar to haul in a 24-yard score to help put the Kats up The much-anticipated debut of 6-5 transfer Jason Madkins went well. After he dropped a wide-open pass over the middle on Sam Houston s fi rst drive of the game, the former Mart High School standout caught three passes for 39 yards. Madkins also showed why the Bearkats covet his size so much, especially around the goal line, catching an 11-yard fade route in the right corner of the end zone that put SHSU up Senior Justin Wells showed steady hands as usual and sophomore Chris Lucas made a solid catch over the middle and held on to the ball despite getting blasted from behind by an ECU defender. Some of them like Catron and Justin Wells, they were playing as sophomores and now they are seniors, SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said Thursday night. Lucas had a fabulous camp. He didn t hardly drop a pass all fall. Madkins brings a big target for us. Trey Payne we just have fi ve guys that are older and can do a good job for us. I think it is really one of the strengths of our team right now. If the Sam Houston State offense is going to continue to be this explosive, the Bearkats are going to need more performances like the one they got from junior running back James Aston to keep opposing defenses honest. With the loss of Chris Poullard, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season, and sophomore TyMagic Robinson nursing a hamstring injury, Aston got the start in the backfi eld for Sam Houston on Thursday. Katy High School s all-time leading rusher didn t disappoint. Aston bulled his way to 115 yards on eight carries and scored two touchdowns on the ground against the Tigers. Like Bomar, all of Aston s production came in the fi rst half. Aston also gives the Kats another receiving threat out of the backfi eld. He caught three passes for 41 yards Thursday. He also reeled in a pass from Bomar, raced down the sideline and jumped over an ECU defender for a 21-yard touchdown. With Robinson s ability to score every time he touches the ball when he gets back to full strength (he had two carries for 18 yards Thursday), the Bearkats should have one of the most dangerous backfi elds in Southland Conference this season. (Aston) had a good camp as well, Whitten added. We had thought through camp that he is a good ball carrier and a good back. He cramped up a little bit today, but he has good vision and is really strong. He has great balance and we are going to continue to work with him. I think he has a chance to do a lot of good stuff for us. Bearkat Defense Adjusting To Strengths From The Huntsville Item / By Cody Stark Assistant Sports Editor All it took was 19 seconds to change the course of the 2007 football season for Sam Houston State. That doesn t seem like a lot of time, but on Sept. 15, 2007, 19 seconds felt like an eternity. The Bearkats had scored with 26 seconds left to go up and put themselves on the verge of an upset of No. 4 North Dakota State in front of a packed house at the Fargodome. The Bison had 26 seconds left to pull off a comeback. They didn t need that much time. It just took 19 seconds. Three plays, 54 yards capped by a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Steve Walker to Kole Heckondorf made the fi nal score North Dakota State. It was a heartbreaking loss for Sam Houston State and the nightmare still lingers. That was defi nitely a turning point in our season, SHSU cornerback Stanley Garrett said. If we would have won that game, it could have changed the whole year. We defi nitely would have built something off that. We got our heads down after that. And it s still in the back of my head. The loss began a four-game losing streak for Sam Houston including the Kats fi rst two Southland Conference contests to Central Arkansas and McNeese State. By the time the Bearkats got things back in order, closing the season with a fi ve-game winning streak to fi nish 5-2 in league play, it was too late for post-season playoff hopes. But the way the Bearkats stepped up down the stretch in 2007, and with a new defensive scheme, switching from the to the 4-3 which utilizes the team s strengths, things look promising for Sam Houston in I think the way we closed out the season really helped boost us heading into the offseason, Kat head coach Todd Whitten said. We had a record number show up in the weight room and hang around during the summer. By winning fi ve games to fi nish last season, they know what it takes. We have a chance to be a good football team. With the potential to be explosive on offense, the Bearkats title hopes rest on how quickly the defense can adjust to the new scheme. Sam Houston State has a talented and deep linebacking crew featuring starters Nolan Bucek (an All-Southland selection in 2007), Luke McCall and Derrick Raymer and backups Patrick Robinson, Frank Simon and Brandon Bruce. With three linebackers now in the starting lineup as opposed to two in the past, those guys are going to be counted upon to make more plays this season. I think the 4-3 really fi ts us well as far as the linebacking corps because we have a lot of aggressive linebackers, McCall said. With the 4-3, it puts a lot more responsibility on us and that frees us up to do more. Overall I really like it more, I think everybody else does too. The Kats should also be strong on the defensive line with two All-SLC returning starters in tackle Eric Mikolajchak and end Chris Brown. Brown s backup in 2007, Ryan Gloston, and tackle Kevin Smith will hold down the other two starting spots. They combined to make 31 tackles last season. Things won t change much for the Bearkats up front, but the extra linebacker should help stopping the run and putting more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. I think the new defense is really going to help us with the run, Mikolajchak said. We have a lot more experience now with Raymer stepping in at bandit. He has been playing well. We are playing well as a defense. I think we have had a great preseason camp and are adjusting to the 4-3. With Garrett and fellow cornerback Wonseleh Brewer having a year of starting experience under their belts, Sam Houston will be able to run more coverage packages this season. We understand more what is going on up front and that allows us to read the ball better, Garrett said. We just feel a lot more comfortable this season and have a better understanding of what we need to do.

East Central-Charles Huffman 7-50 PASSING: Sam Houston St.-Rhett Bomar ; Jeff Welch ; Bryan Randolph East Central-Marcus Johnson HUNTSVILLE Senior quarterback Rhett Bomar completed 14 of 22 passes for 198 yards and four touchdowns playing only the fi rst half as Sam Houston State opened its 2008 football season with a nonconference victory over East Central University of Oklahoma. Bomar led a Bearkat offense that scored every possession it touched the ball in the fi rst half, putting up seven touchdowns and a fi eld goal. Sam Houston State (1-0) built a 52-0 lead. The 52 points were the most ever by a Bearkat football team in the fi rst half of a game. East Central (0-1), a member of the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference, scored 14 points in the second half. Quarterback Marcus Johnson completed 31 of 53 attempts for 296 yards. Running back James Aston carried eight times on the ground for 115 yards and two touchdowns including a 49 yard scamper. Aston also caught three passes for 41 yards and a tally. Catron Houston led Bearkat receivers with fi ve catches for 72 yards and two scores. Bomar led scoring drives of 53, 82, 61, 6, 43, 61, 44, and 48 yards. His touchdown passes include a 7-yards to Houston at 12:28 in the fi rst quarter, 11 yards to Jason Madkins with 4:08 left in the period, 21 yards to Aston with 12:45 to go in the second quarter and 24 yards to Houston with 9:44 remaining in the half. The Bearkat defense forced four turnovers, two on fumbles and two on interceptions. Luke McCall and D. J. Emerson accounted for the interceptions. Nolen Bucek and Jeff Sparks recovered the fumbles. Will Henry led the Bearkat defense with eight stops. Frank Simon, Justin Rock and Brandon Bruce each totaled seven tackles. Taylor Wilkins kicked seven extra points and blasted a 45-yard fi eld goal, a career long for the junior specialist.
