For Immediate Release September 12, 2006 The San Diego Chargers, fresh off of a 27-0 shutout against the Oakland Raiders on ESPN s Monday Night Football, return to QUALCOMM Stadium for their 2006 home opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is set for 1:15 p.m. PDT. The Chargers win over the Raiders was the Bolts first-ever opening day win against the Raiders, snapping an 0-5 mark against their arch-rivals on the NFL s Kickoff Weekend. It was also Marty Schottenheimer s second opening day win in two tries against the Raiders and he improved his career mark against Oakland to Schottenheimer will now look to continue his coaching success against the Titans. In 21 career games against the Houston Oilers-turned-Tennessee Titans, Schottenheimer is 14-7 against the franchise and he s won three in a row. Last Monday night in Oakland, Schottenheimer earned his 187 th career regular-season victory, giving him sole possession of seventh place on the NFL s all-time wins list. He s now just three wins away from tying Dan Reeves (190 wins) for sixth all-time. LaDainian Tomlinson is another player who is looking to continue his success against the Titans. The last time these two teams met in 2004, Tomlinson rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, and it was during that game that Tomlinson passed Paul Lowe to become the Chargers all-time leading rusher. His 8.6 yards per carry average in the last meeting against the Titans was his 04 season high. CBS Sports will televise Sunday s game with Bill Macatee (play by play) and Richard Baldinger (color commentary) calling the action. More than 3,000 tickets are still available for Sunday s game. If it becomes a sellout by 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, KFMB-TV (Channel 8) will carry the game live in San Diego.

3 DEFENSE DOMINATES San Diego s defense stole the show as the Chargers went in to Oakland and dominated the Raiders on their way to a 27-0 victory. The Bolts racked up nine sacks and two tackles for loss and were led by the reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, Shawne Merriman, who led the team with three sacks and six tackles, including a tackle for loss. An impressive statistic from the game was that the Chargers collected the nine sacks in 28 total pass plays, giving the team nearly one sack for every three pass plays run from scrimmage. Six different players collected sacks in the game, including Merriman s three, Luis Castillo (1.5), Shaun Phillips (1.5), Donnie Edwards (1.0), Stephen Cooper (1.0) and Jamal Williams (1.0). It s only the second time (since 1982) that the Chargers had six different defenders record at least one sack in a game. The only other time it happened was on Oct. 25, 1987 against Kansas City. The Chargers nine sacks tied for the third-most in a game in team history and they were the most since a nine-sack game against Houston on Sept. 15, For those who saw Monday night s game against the Raiders, the Chargers paid tribute to fallen linebacker Steve Foley with his signature celebration following each of their sacks. Coincidentally, Foley was the last Charger to record three sacks in a game, doing so against the Indianapolis Colts on Dec. 26, The team record for sacks in a game is 11, set by the 1986 team against Dallas on Nov. 16. The Chargers finished the game by holding Oakland to 129 total net yards, the 10 th -best single-game effort in team history and the fewest yards allowed since Sept. 15, 2002 when the Bolts held the Texans to just 118 yards. THE BIG 0 The Chargers 27-0 blanking of the Raiders on Monday night was the team s first-ever shutout on opening day. It was only the second time the Chargers had shut out the Raiders in 94 games. To find the last time the Chargers shut out the Raiders, you ve got to go all the way back to Sept. 17, 1961 when the Bolts routed Oakland, All-time, Monday night s game was the Chargers 15 th defensive shutout and their first since Dec. 19, 2004 in Cleveland in a game that allowed the Bolts to clinch the 2004 AFC West regular-season title. O-LINE GETS NASTY The Chargers offensive line, featuring Shane Olivea (RT), Mike Goff (RG), Nick Hardwick (C), Kris Dielman (LG) and rookie Marcus McNeill (RT) was just downright nasty in Week 1 against Oakland. The Bolts front five paved the way for a 194-yard rushing day and didn t allow a sack. In fact, quarterback Philip Rivers was only hit one time the entire night, but it was on a play in which he completed a game-long 38-yard pass to Eric Parker. The Chargers 194-yard rushing effort on opening day was their most in an opener in five years since opening the 2002 season with 241 yards on the ground at Cincinnati on Sept. 8. HOME COOKING The Chargers come into Sunday s game (.630) in home openers. They ve won eight of their last 13, but dropped three straight, a streak they would like to put to an end on Sunday. The Bolts are also eager to get off to a good start at home after winning just four games at QUALCOMM Stadium in THE AFC WEST Team W L T PF PA HM AY AFC NFC DIV Chargers Denver Kansas City Oakland LAST WEEK THIS WEEK NEXT WEEK Chargers 27 at Oakland 0 Chargers vs. Tennessee Chargers, Kansas City & Oakland - Byes at St. Louis 18 Denver 10 Kansas City at Denver Denver at New England (Sun. night) Cincinnati 23 at Kansas City 10 Oakland at Baltimore 3

6 LT GOES LONG DISTANCE One of the biggest plays of the night in Monday s 27-0 win over the Raiders was LaDainian Tomlinson s 58-yard run in the first quarter that four plays later led to his one-yard touchdown run that gave the Bolts a 10-0 lead. That run tied for his fifth-longest run from scrimmage and coincidentally it bounced his 42-yard run against Tennessee on Oct. 3, 2004 out of his Top 10 for career longest runs. Here s an updated look at LT s 10 longest runs from scrimmage vs. Denver, Dec. 1, t... vs. Minnesota, Nov. 9, t... at Cleveland, Oct. 19, vs. New York Giants, Sept. 25, at Oakland, Sept. 11, t... vs. New England, Sept. 29, vs. Kansas City, Nov. 30, vs. Minnesota, Nov. 9, t... at Oakland, Sept. 28, at Cleveland, Oct. 7, 2001 LT GOES FOR BACK-TO-BACK 100-YARD GAMES LT is coming off a season-opening 131 yard performance at Oakland. It was the fourth time in six NFL seasons that the three-time Pro Bowler has opened the season with a 100-yard effort. Should he go for 100 this Sunday against Tennessee, it would mark the first time he s ever opened a season with consecutive 100-yard games. His longest careerstreak of 100-yard games is three, a run he put together late in the 2004 season. LT JUST ANOTHER RAIDER WEEK LT has made quite a name for himself in the Chargers-Raiders series. Including Monday night s victory, Tomlinson now has six 100-yard games in 11 career starts against the Raiders. In fact six of his 29-career 100-yard games have been against Oakland, more than any other team he s faced. LT really enjoys playing at the McAfee Coliseum in front of the Black Hole, where five of his six 100-yard games against the Raiders have taken place. In 11 career games against the Raiders, LT has rushed 298 times for 1,346 yards and 10 touchdowns; he s caught 45 passes for 225 yards and two scores and he s thrown two touchdown passes. LT IN PURSUIT OF TEAM TOUCHDOWNS RECORD Tomlinson has scored 81 career touchdowns heading into Sunday s game against the Titans. He is ranked second in team history in touchdowns, trailing only Lance Alworth, who scored 83 times during his Hall of Fame career in San Diego. In 2006 when LT Rushes for more than 100 yards: 1-0 Rushes for less than 100 yards: 0-0 Carries 20 or more times in a game: 1-0 Carries less than 20 times in a game: 0-0 Scores a touchdown: 1-0 Scores no touchdowns: 0-0 Throws a touchdown pass: 0-0 Scores two or more touchdowns: 0-0 Makes a play of 70 yards or longer: 0-0 Rushes for more than 200 yards: 0-0 Records 200 combined yards: 0-0 THE CHARGERS RECORD Dating back to his rookie season in 2001 when LT Rushes for more than 100 yards: 21-8 Rushes for less than 100 yards: Carries 20 or more times in a game: Carries less than 20 times in a game: 9-25 Scores a touchdown: Scores no touchdowns: 8-18 Throws a touchdown pass: 3-1 Scores two or more touchdowns: 17-4 Makes a play of 70 yards or longer: 4-1 Rushes for more than 200 yards: 4-0 Records 200 combined yards: 9-0 6

Tomlinson s jersey was the second-most popular in sales recorded from April 1 July 15, The New Orleans Saints top pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, Helix High School (San Diego) alum Reggie Bush had the league s top-selling jersey. THE McCARDELL WATCH Keenan McCardell comes into Sunday s game against Tennessee with 826 career catches, just one shy of the NFL s ninth all-time leading receiver, Larry Centers (827). The only active player with more catches than Keenan is Indianapolis Marvin Harrison with 936.
