2 CAA SIX-YEAR OPPONENT SCHEDULE Beginning with the season, The Colonial Athletic Association will compete under a six-year plan of 18 league games per year and nine non-conference games per year to reach the 27-game schedule. This season is year two of this plan. The CAA formula will be based on these factors: 1. Five (5) permanent rivals to play home and away every year of the six years to account for 10 games on the annual schedule. 2. Three pairs of teams that will rotate every two years among home and away or EITHER just home or away. For example, Georgia State will play William & Mary both home and away the first two years and then just once each the following two years (one home, one away). Those six games per year work out to playing two teams twice and four teams once (two home, two away). Georgia State s five permanent rivals for this six-year plan include: Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. North Carolina Wilmington in Wilmington, N.C. Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. Towson University in Baltimore, Md. Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. CAA NCAA TOURNEY HISTORY NOTEBOOK The CAA, since its 1981 beginnings in the ECAC South and then the CAA in has been known as a Bracket Buster in NCAA postseason tournaments. Twelve times, the CAA team entered as a lower seed and busted up brackets by beating a higher seed: One of the most surprising was the 1991 team with Michael Perry on the staff that went in as a No. 15 seed and defeated No. 2 seed Syracuse (No. 7 in nation), Richmond had a history of giant-slaying that included a 1998 win as No. 14 seed over No. 3 South Carolina, plus a pair of wins in 1988 as a No. 13 seed over No. 4 seed and defending national champion Indiana (72-69) and then No. 5 seed Georgia Tech, 59-55, to adavance to the Sweet 16. When David Robinson of Navy was setting league records, the Midshipmen advanced to the Elite 8 in 1986 as they started out a No. 7 seed with a win over No. 2 seed Syracuse. Navy also beat Tulsa and Cleveland State in that tournament. A year earlier, Navy served notice as a No. 13 seed with a win over No. 4 seed LSU. The first teams to make headlines was James Madison in for three straight years, , with wins over No. 7 Georgetown, No. 8 Ohio State, and No. 7 West Virginia in three straight first rounds. In 2002, UNC Wilmington went in as No. 13 and defeated No. 4 Southern Cal. In , George Mason, an at large entry, was the story of the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Final Four with wins over North Carolina, Michigan State, Wichita State, and Connecticut. 106

11 Commissioner Tom Yeager Coming off one of the most successful seasons in its 21-year history, the Colonial Athletic Association continues to enhance its reputation as one of the nation s top collegiate conferences. With a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta, the CAA encompasses five of the nation s nine largest metropolitan areas. On the playing field, the conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 11 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Even more impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 19 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In , the CAA had 11 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans and more than 1,500 of our 4,000 student-athletes posted at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport and received the CAA Commissioner s Academic Award. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation s top 25 media markets New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (5), Washington, D.C. (8), Atlanta (9) and Baltimore (23). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 19 million. The CAA conducts championships in 21 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. The CAA will also begin sponsorship of a 12-team Division I-AA football league in the fall of The conference made its presence known nationally in in men s basketball with four teams, George Mason, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion and Hofstra, earning post-season bids. Mason became the first midmajor program since 1979 to reach the Final Four and the Patriots were ranked #8 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ever for a CAA team. ODU made the final four the NIT. Drexel was the first CAA squad to make the final four of the NIT Pre-Season Tip-Off Tournament. The CAA was ranked eighth out of 31 conferences in the final RPI with six teams among the top 88 in the country. In women s basketball, the CAA had a league-record four teams earn post-season berths and was ranked #8 in the final RPI, as Old Dominion made the NCAAs and James Madison, Delaware and Hofstra competed in the WNIT. The conference also excels in many other sports. In baseball, the league had 28 players chosen in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft. The CAA is annually ranked among the nation s top 10 conferences in men s and women s soccer, and traditionally sends multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament. In , 21 league teams earned NCAA Tournament berths in 16 sports. There were 37 CAA student-athletes who earned All-America honors. The Colonial Academic Alliance CAA RPIs Baseball 11 Men s Basketball 8 Women s Basketball 8 Men s Soccer 16 Women s Soccer 11 Softball 22 Volleyball 18 Colonial Athletic Association was created in 2002 by the league s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to studentathletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia s most coveted distinction the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. 14 Back-to-Back All-America Players Georgia State s success in and (49-16) translated into a pair of players being nationally recognized with Honorable Mention All-America honors. Approximately 50 players are honored as All-Americans nationally among the thousands who play. And, Georgia State can proudly claim two of those in the back-to-back seasons. Shernard Long became the first to be honored right before the Panthers NCAA appearance in March, 2001, and then Thomas Terrell was given the honor in March, Shernard Long (No. 15) was the Conference Most Valuable Player and leading scorer in the season (18 points per game). The 6-4, 200-pounder led the Panthers to a school record 29-5 season and berth in the NCAA Final 32. Long is an Atlanta native from Tucker High. Thomas Terrell (No. 5) was the Conference Most Valuable Player and leading scorer in the season (20.5 points per game). The 6-7, 240-pounder led the Panthers to a 20-win and NIT season. Terrell was drafted No.8 overall in the USBL and his scoring average ranked in the top 35 in the nation. His outside shooting touch produced 177 three-point baskets in two years, second most in school history. His 635 points in a season are a school record. 118

15 New Video New Board for for Arena This season, Georgia State will unveil its new video board on the north end of the Sports Arena. The large board will provide multiple uses and options for the enjoyment of fans attending any event in the Sports Arena. The photo at right is not the exact board, but a drawing from the first proposal. New CAA for Legends The Colonial Athletic Association honors some of its former stars by naming one former player from each school as A Legend at the annual CAA Championship Banquet. In Georgia State s first year at the event, the school honored the first 1,000-point scorer in school history, Jim Jacobs. The guard was a four-year letterman from and set a school free throw shooting record (.857) and a single game best (37 points) that stood for multiple years. He was also a pitcher on the baseball team with a win over the SEC s Vanderbilt. He graduated with his degree in journalism and has spent the past 17 years as Editor for the Georgia Sportsman Magazine, a group of 30 hunting and fishing magazines, and travels extensively throughout the southeast with his job. 119
